Co(II) PCP Pincer Complexes as Catalysts for the Alkylation of Aromatic Amines with Primary Alcohols

N-Monomethylation of Aromatic Amines with Methanol via PNHP-Pincer Ru Catalysts

The use of methanol for the selective methylation of aromatic amines with RuHCl(CO)(PN^HP) (PN^HP = bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)amine) is reported. Various aromatic amines were transformed into their corresponding monomethylated secondary amines in high yields at 150 °C with a very low catalyst loading (0.02-0.1 mol %) in the presence of KO ^tBu (20-60 mol %). The catalyst precursor, RuHCl(CO)(PN^HP), was converted to [RuH(CO)₂(PN^HP)]⁺ under the catalytic conditions and also serves as a highly effective catalyst. The robustness of this catalyst contributes to its outstanding catalytic activity, even under reaction conditions, in which CO is liberated from methanol.

Cobalt complex catalyzed atom-economical synthesis of quinoxaline, quinoline and 2-alkylaminoquinoline derivatives

A new phosphine-free Co(ii) complex-catalyzed synthesis of various quinoxalines via dehydrogenative coupling of vicinal diols with both o-phenylenediamines and 2-nitroanilines is reported. This complex was also effective for the synthesis of quinolines. The practical aspect of this catalytic system was revealed by the one-pot synthesis of 2-alkylaminoquinolines.

Nickel-Catalyzed Phosphine Free Direct N-Alkylation of Amides with Alcohols

Herein, we developed an operational simple, practical, and selective Ni-catalyzed synthesis of secondary amides. Application of renewable alcohols, earth-abundant and nonprecious nickel catalyst facilitates the transformations, releasing water as byproduct. The catalytic system is tolerant to a variety of functional groups including nitrile, allylic ether, and alkene and could be extended to the synthesis of bis-amide, antiemetic drug Tigan, and dopamine D2 receptor antagonist Itopride. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed the participation of a benzylic C-H bond in the rate-determining step.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Alkylation of Secondary Alcohols with Primary Alcohols via Borrowing Hydrogen/Hydrogen Autotransfer

Alcohols are promising sustainable starting materials because they can be obtained from abundant and indigestible biomass. The substitution of expensive noble metals in catalysis by earth abundant 3d metals, such as Mn, Fe, or Co, (nonprecious or base metals) is a related key concept with respect to sustainability. Here, we report on the first cobalt-catalyzed alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols. Easy-to-synthesize and easy-to-activate PN₅ P-pincer-ligand-stabilized Co complexes developed in our laboratory mediate the reaction most efficiently. The catalysis is applicable to a broad substrate scope and proceeds under relatively mild conditions. We have even demonstrated the coupling of a variety of purely aliphatic alcohols with a base or nonprecious metal catalyst. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction follows the borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer concept.

Cobalt-Catalyzed α-Alkylation of Ketones with Primary Alcohols

An ionic cobalt-PNP complex is developed for the efficient α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols for the first time. A broad range of ketone and alcohol substrates were employed, leading to the isolation of alkylated ketones with yields up to 98%. The method was successfully applied to the greener synthesis of quinoline derivatives while using 2-aminobenzyl alcohol as an alkylating reagent.
