Abstract
Conformational analysis of highly substituted porphyrins has potential implications for modeling the behavior of macrocycles in tetrapyrrole-containing protein complexes and during catalytic reactions. In order to study the influence of different substituent patterns on the conformation of the porphyrin macrocycle, a series of metal free and nickel(II) decasubstituted porphyrins bearing aryl or ethyl groups at opposite meso positions and alkyl groups at the pyrrole positions have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Crystal structures of the free-base porphyrins with 5,15-diaryl substituents showed negligible out-of-plane distortion but a large amount of in-plane distortion along the 5,15-axis accompanied by large bond angle changes similar to those previously seen for related porphyrins with 5,15-dialkyl substituents. Nickel(II) complexes of the 5,15-diaryl-substituted porphyrins show planar or modestly nonplanar conformations, suggesting that these complexes are not intrinsically nonplanar, whereas a complex with 5,15-diethyl substituents has a very ruffled conformation similar to those observed for related complexes with other metals. The nickel(II) complexes are also elongated along the 5,15-axis in a qualitatively similar but less dramatic fashion than are the free-base porphyrins. Spectrosopic studies ((1)H NMR, optical, and resonance Raman spectroscopy) suggest that conformations similar to those determined by X-ray crystallography are present in solution for the 5,15-dialkyl- and 5,15-diaryl-substituted porphyrins. Several asymmetric nickel(II) and metal-free deca- and undecasubstituted porphyrins containing both aryl and alkyl meso-substituents were also investigated. Metal-free 5,15-disubstituted porphyrins with one aryl and one alkyl group showed considerably elongated porphyrin cores, whereas nickel(II) complexes of porphyrins with 5,10- or 5,10,15-substitution patterns showed very nonplanar structures consisting mainly of ruffle and saddle type distortions.

Abstract
The electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry of (TPPBr(x)())FeCl (TPPBr(x)() is the dianion of beta-brominated-pyrrole tetraphenylporphyrin and x = 0-8) were examined in PhCN containing tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) as supporting electrolyte. Each compound undergoes two reversible to quasireversible one-electron oxidations and either three or four reductions within the potential limits of the solvent. The two oxidations occur at the conjugated porphyrin pi ring system, and DeltaE(1/2) between these two electrode reactions increases as the molecule becomes more distorted. The overall reduction of each compound involves the stepwise electrogeneration omicronf an iron(II), iron(I), and iron(I) pi anion radical. An equilibrium between chloride-bound and chloride-free iron(II) forms of the porphyrin is observed with association of the anionic ligand being favored for compounds with x > 5. Singly reduced (TPPBr(x)())FeCl (x = 0 to x = 6) forms both mono- and bis-CO adducts in CH(2)Cl(2). Only the mono-CO adduct is observed for (TPPBr(7))FeCl, and there is no binding at all of CO to (TPPBr(8))FeCl. The nu(CO) of both the mono- and bis-adducts increases with increase in the number of Br groups, but in a nonlinear fashion which is explained in terms of two competing effects. One is the electron-withdrawing affinity of the Br substitutents and the other the nonplanarity of the macrocycle.

Abstract
The photochemical and photocatalytic properties of iron meso-tetraarylporphyrins bearing an OH(-) axial ligand and different substituents in the beta-positions of the porphyrin ring are reported. Irradiation (lambda = 365 nm) in the absence of dioxygen leads to the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) with the formation of OH(*) radicals. Substituents at the pyrrole beta-positions are found to markedly affect the photoreduction quantum yields. Under aerobic conditions, this photoreaction can induce the subsequent oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol by O(2) itself. The process occurs under mild conditions (22 degrees C; 760 Torr of O(2)) and without the consumption of a reducing agent. The polarity of the solvent and the nature of the porphyrin ring have a remarkable effect on the selectivity of the photooxidation process, likely controlling the cleavage of O-O bonds of possible iron peroxoalkyl intermediates. In particular, in pure cyclohexane, oxidation occurs with the selective formation of cyclohexanone; in contrast, in dichloromethane/cyclohexane mixed solvent, the main oxidation product is cyclohexanol. Phenyl-tert-butylnitrone (pbn) has been found to quench the radical chain autooxidation of the substrate thus increasing the yield of cyclohexanol. This becomes the only oxidation product when iron 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrin hydroxide (Fe(III)(TDCPP)(OH)) is used as photocatalyst.

Abstract
Halogenation of an iron porphyrin causes severe saddling of the macrocyclic structure and a large positive shift in the iron(III)/(II) redox couple. Although pre-halogenated iron(II) porphyrins such as Fe(TFPPBr8) [H2TFPPBr8, beta-octabromo-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-porphyrin] are relatively resistant to autoxidation, they rapidly reduce alkyl hydroperoxides. These and related reactivity studies suggest that catalysis of alkane oxygenation by Fe(TFPPBr8)Cl occurs through a radical-chain mechanism in which the radicals are generated by oxidation and reduction of alkyl hydroperoxides.
