Photoinduced Ferrimagnetic Systems in Prussian Blue Analogues CIxCo4[Fe(CN)6]y (CI = Alkali Cation). 2. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of the Metastable State

Magnetic and Mössbauer Investigation of the Photomagnetic Prussian Blue Analogue Na0.32Co[Fe(CN)6]0.74·3.4H2O: Cooperative Relaxation of the Thermally Quenched State

Thanks to thermal quenching we investigated the relaxation of the metastable state of Na(0.32)Co[Fe(CN)6](0.74).3.4H2O at low temperature. A self-accelerated process has been observed in agreement with the cooperative character of the system, responsible for the large thermal hysteresis of the charge-transfer-induced spin transition. The mean-field analysis of the relaxation is discussed with respect to the equilibrium properties. A sizable deviation from mean-field behavior is observed at the beginning of the relaxation process, which might be attributed to a preliminary structural relaxation of the quenched state.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of cyanide- and phenolate-bridged [MIIINiII]2tetranuclear complexes (M = Fe and Cr)

The binuclear complex NiII2L(H2O)2(ClO4)2(1) and the neutral tetranuclear bimetallic compounds [{M(III)(phen)(CN)4}2{NiII2L(H2O)2}].2CH3CN with M=Fe (2) and Cr (3)[H2L=11,23-dimethyl-3,7,15,19-tetraazatricyclo[19.3.1.1(9,13)]hexacosa-2,7,9,11,13(26),14,19,21(25),22,24-decaene-25,26-diol] have been synthesized and the structures of and determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. and are isostructural compounds whose structure is made up of centrosymmetric binuclear cations [Ni2(L)(H2O)2]2+ and two peripheral [M(phen)(CN)4]- anions [M=Fe (2) and Cr (3)] acting as monodentate ligands towards the nickel atoms through one of their four cyanide nitrogen atoms. The environment of the metal atoms in 2 and 3 is six-coordinated: two phen-nitrogen and four cyanide-carbon atoms at the iron and chromium atoms and a water molecule, one cyanide-nitrogen and two phenolate-oxygens and two imine-nitrogens from the binucleating ligand L2- at the nickel atom build distorted octahedral surroundings. The values of the FeNi and CrNi separations through the single cyanide bridge are 5.058(1) and 5.174(2)A respectively, whereas the Ni-Ni distances across the double phenolate bridge are 3.098(2)(2) and 3.101(1) A (3). The magnetic properties of have been investigated in the temperature range 1.9-290 K. The magnetic behaviour of corresponds to that of an antiferromagnetically coupled nickel(II) dimer with J=-61.0(1) cm-1, the Hamiltonian being defined as H=-J S(A).S(B). An overall antiferromagnetic behaviour is observed for and with a low-lying singlet spin state. The values of the intramolecular magnetic couplings are J(Fe-Ni)=+17.4(1) cm-1 and J(Ni-Ni(a))=-44.4(1) cm-1 for and J(Cr-Ni)=+11.8(1) cm-1 and J(Ni-Ni(a))=-44.6(1) cm-1 for [H=-J(M-Ni)(S(M).S(Ni)+S(Ma).S(Nia))-J(Ni-Nia)S(Ni)S(Nia)]. Theoretical calculations using methods based on density functional theory (DFT) have been employed on in order to analyze the efficiency of the exchange pathways involved and also to substantiate the exchange coupling parameters.

Nuclearity Controlled Cyanide-Bridged Bimetallic CrIII-MnIICompounds: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Magnetic Properties and Theoretical Calculations

The preparation, X-ray crystallography and magnetic investigation of the compounds PPh4[Cr(bipy)(CN)4].2 CH3CN.H2O (1) (mononuclear), [[Cr(bipy)(CN)4]2Mn-(H2O)4].4H2O (2) (trinuclear), [[Cr(bipy)(CN)4]2Mn(H2O)2] (3) (chain) and [[Cr(bipy)(CN)4]2Mn(H2O)].H2O.CH3CN (4) (double chain) [bipy=2,2'-bipyridine; PPh4 (+)=tetraphenylphosphonium] are described herein. The [Cr(bipy)(CN)4]- unit act either as a monodentate (2) or bis-monodentate (3) ligand toward the manganese atom through one (2) or two (3) of its four cyanide groups. The manganese atom is six-coordinate with two (2) or four (3) cyanide nitrogens and four (2) or two (3) water molecules building a distorted octahedral environment. In 4, two chains of 3 are pillared through interchain Mn-N-C-Cr links which replace one of the two trans-coordinated water molecules at the manganese atom to afford a double chain structure where bis- and tris-monodenate coordination modes of [Cr(bipy)(CN)4]- coexist. The magnetic properties of 1-4 were investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K. A Curie law behaviour for a magnetically isolated spin quartet is observed for 1. A significant antiferromagnetic interaction between CrIII and MnII through the single cyanide bridge [J=-6.2 cm(-1), the Hamiltonian being defined as H=-J(SCr1.SMn+SCr2.SMn] occurs in 2 leading to a low-lying spin doublet which is fully populated at T <5 K. A metamagnetic behaviour is observed for 3 and 4 [the values of the critical field Hc being ca. 3000 (3) and 1500 Oe (4)] which is associated to the occurrence of weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions between ferrimagnetic Cr2III MnII chains. The analysis of the exchange pathways in 2-4 through DFT type calculations together with the magnetic bevaviour simulation using the quantum Monte Carlo methodology provided a good understanding of their magnetic properties.

Photoinduced Magnetization of the Cyano-Bridged 3d−4f Heterobimetallic Assembly Nd(DMF)4(H2O)3(μ-CN)Fe(CN)5·H2O (DMF = N,N-Dimethylformamide)

Photoinduced magnetization of the cyano-bridged 3d-4f heterobimetallic assembly Nd(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Fe(CN)5.H2O (1) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) is described in this paper. The chiMT values are enhanced by about 45% after UV light illumination in the temperature range of 5-50 K. We propose that UV light illumination induces a structural distortion in 1. This small structural change is propagated by molecular interactions in the inorganic network. Furthermore, the cooperativity resulting from the molecular interaction functions to increase the activation energy of the relaxation processes, which makes observation of the photoexcited state possible. The flexible network structure through the hydrogen bonds in 1 plays an essential role for the photoinduced phenomenon. This finding may open up a new domain for developing the molecule-based magnetic materials.

Ferromagnetic coupling between low- and high-spin iron(III) ions in the tetranuclear complex fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]* 6H2O ([HB(pz)3]- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate)

The novel mononuclear PPh4-fac-[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)3]*H2O (1) [PPh4+= tetraphenylphosphonium cation; (HB(pz)3)- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate] and tetranuclear fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]*6H2O (2) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for compound 1: monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 9.575(3) A, b = 21.984(4) A, c = 16.863(3) A, beta = 100.34(2) degrees, U = 3486(1) A3, Z = 4. Crystal data for compound 2: orthorhombic, space group Pnam, a = 14.084(3) A, b = 14.799(4) A, c = 25.725(5) A, U = 5362(2) A3, Z = 4. Compound 1 is a low-spin iron(III) compound with three cyanide ligands in fac arrangement and a tridentate pyrazolylborate ligand building a distorted octahedral environment around the iron atom. Compound 2 is the first example of a molecular species containing three peripheral low-spin iron(III) ions linked to a central high-spin iron(III) cation by single cyanide bridges, the anion of 1 acting as a monodentate ligand in 2. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 2 reveal the occurrence of a significant ferromagnetic coupling between the three peripheral low-spin iron(III) centers and the central high-spin iron(III) ion cations leading to a low-lying nonet spin state.

Control of charge-transfer-induced spin transition temperature on cobalt-iron Prussian blue analogues

The electronic and spin states of a series of Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues containing Na(+) ion in the lattice, Na(x)()Co(y)()Fe(CN)(6) x zH(2)O, strongly depended on the atomic composition ratio of Co to Fe (Co/Fe) and temperature. Compounds of Co/Fe = 1.5 and 1.15 consisted mostly of the Fe(III)(t(2g)(5)e(g)(0), LS, S = 1/2)-CN-Co(II)(t(2g)(5)e(g)(2), HS, S = 3/2) site and the Fe(II)(t(2g)(6)e(g)(0), LS, S = 0)-CN-Co(III)(t(2g)(6)e(g)(0), LS, S = 0) site, respectively, over the entire temperature region from 5 to 350 K. Conversely, compounds of Co/Fe = 1.37, 1.32, and 1.26 showed a change in their electronic and spin states depending on the temperature. These compounds consisted mainly of the Fe(III)-CN-Co(II) site (HT phase) around room temperature but turned to the state consisting mainly of the Fe(II)-CN-Co(III) site (LT phase) at low temperatures. This charge-transfer-induced spin transition (CTIST) phenomenon occurred reversibly with a large thermal hysteresis of about 40 K. The CTIST temperature (T(1/2) = (T(1/2) descending + T(1/2) ascending)/2) increased from 200 to 280 K with decreasing Co/Fe from 1.37 to 1.26. Furthermore, by light illumination at 5 K, the LT phase of compounds of Co/Fe = 1.37, 1.32, and 1.26 was converted to the HT phase, and the relaxation temperature from this photoproduced HT phase also strongly depended on the Co/Fe ratio; 145 K for Co/Fe = 1.37, 125 K for Co/Fe = 1.32, and 110 K for Co/Fe = 1.26. All these phenomena are explained by a simple model using potential energy curves of the LT and HT phases. The energy difference of two phases is determined by the ligand field strength around Co(II) ions, which can be controlled by Co/Fe.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of Novel Complex [μ-(NC)-Fe(CN)3(NO)-μ-(CN)-Cu(ept)]n·4nH2O (ept = N-(2-Aminoethyl)propane-1,3-diamine)

The novel complex [μ-(NC)-Fe(CN)3(NO)-μ-(CN)-Cu(ept)]n·4nH2O (ept = N-(2-aminoethyl)- propane-1,3-diamine) was obtained by the reaction of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with N-(2-amino- ethyl)propane-1,3-diamine and Na2[Fe(CN)5NO]·2H2O in water. This compound was characterized by IR, UV-VIS and EPR spectroscopies and magnetic measurement. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that the title complex has a one-dimensional polymeric structure containing hexacoordinate iron(II) with five cyanide ligands (two of them, in trans position, bridging) and one nitrosyl group, and pentacoordinate copper(II) with N-(2-aminoethyl)propane-1,3-diamine and two sites occupied by bridging cyanide ligands. Magnetic investigation revealed a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the copper atoms (superexchange interaction parameter J = -1.7(1) cm-1; H = -JSiSi+1) within the chain through the diamagnetic [Fe(CN)5NO]2- ions.
