Abstract
The present article describes the solvatochromic effect including solvent system selection, time study and a detailed complexation study along with exploration of extraction properties of 5,11,17,23-tetrakis[(diethylamino)methyl]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene (4) that bears nitrogen atom as a donor group available for chelating metal ions. Complexation properties of 4 toward selected transition metal ions have been investigated by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The% efficiency of 4 toward selected transition metal ions was found in order Cu(2+)>Ni(2+)>Hg(2+)>Zn(2+)>Co(2+)>Cd(2+)>Pb(2+). It has been noticed that 4 is not only proved to be an efficient Cu(2+) selective chromoionophore but also possesses an effective extraction property for transferring Cu(2+) ions from an aqueous to dichloromethane layer. The FT-IR spectroscopic method has also been applied for further confirmation of the complexation phenomenon of 4 with Cu(2+) ion and found adequate.

Abstract
The synthesis of asymmetrically bridged calix[4]arene and tetrathiacalix[4]arene amido crown derivatives has been achieved by the aminolysis of distal diester derivatives of calix[4]arene and tetrathiacalix[4]arene with 1,2-diamino-propane or 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (stereoisomeric mixture, mainly trans). The title compounds have been characterised by detailed analysis of their NMR spectra. The assignment of NMR signals and stereo differentiation in the amido crown ring formation has been studied using a chiral shift reagent.

Abstract
In this study, 5,17-bis-[(N-methylglucamine)methyl]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy-calix[4]arene (3) was synthesized by the treatment of calix[4]arene with a secondary amine N-methylglucamine and formaldehyde. The calixarene derivative (3) was characterized by a combination of FTIR, (1)H NMR and elemental analyses. Followingly, using the macrocyclic building block, the compound 3 was immobilized by [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane-modified Fe(3)O(4) magnetite nanoparticles (EPPTMS-MN). The prepared calix[4]arene immobilized material was characterized by a combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Moreover, the studies regarding the removal of arsenate and dichromate ions from the aqueous solutions were also carried out by using the compound in solid-liquid extraction experiments. It was found that the calix[4]arene-based magnetic material has high extraction ability towards dichromate and arsenate anions in 66% (at pH 1.5) and in 86% (at pH 3.5), respectively.

Abstract
The reactions [Ru(NH3)5pz]2++S2O8(2-) and [Ru(NH3)5pz]2++[Co(C2O4)3]3- have been studied in solutions of 4-sulfocalix[4]arene sodium salt. Results show a binding of the ruthenium complex to the calixarene with a 2:1 stoichiometry; that is, a ruthenium molecule binds to two calixarene molecules. This stoichiometry changes when NaCl is added to the medium. Thus, a mixture of 1:1 and 2:1 adducts is found in the presence of 0.1 mol dm(-3) NaCl and only 1:1 adducts when the salt concentration is increased up to 0.3 mol dm(-3). Results show that the binding of the ruthenium complex to the calixarene is due to electrostatic and nonelectrostatic interactions. Kinetic data are interpreted by using the pseudophase model and taking into account the stoichiometry of the ruthenium binding to calixarene. The presence of a supporting electrolyte in the medium produces ion pair formation which exerts an influence on the kinetic rate constants.

Abstract
A new p-tert-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-1,3-bisglyciyl-calix[4]arene functionalized aminopropylpolysiloxane resin (APPS-CA) has been prepared and investigated for selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) of trace Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) prior to their determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The characterization of the surface modification was performed on the basis of FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. The separation/preconcentration conditions of analytes were investigated, including effect of pH, the shaking time, the sample flow rate and volume, the elution condition, the interfering ions and stability test. At pH 4.0, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) were 47.2, 34.3, 52.8, 29.8 and 36.4 mg g(-1), respectively. The adsorbed metal ions were quantitatively eluted by 2.0 mL of 0.5 mol L(-1) HCl. Common coexisting ions did not interfere with the separation. According to the definition of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the detection limits (3 sigma) of this method were found to be 0.58, 0.33, 0.47, 0.61 and 0.14 ng mL(-1) for Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II), respectively. The relative standard deviation under optimum conditions is less than 4.0%. The application of this new adsorbent to preconcentration trace Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) of two water samples gave high accurate and precise results.

Abstract
The process *Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) + S(2)O(8)(2-) in two different reaction media, the SB4.5G dendrimer and DNA solutions, was studied. In both media, the receptors have anionic characteristics. This fact will produce a binding of the ruthenium complex to the two receptors by attractive electrostatic interactions. On the contrary, the peroxodisulfate ions will be preferentially located in the aqueous solution due to electrostatic repulsions with the receptors. Despite the similarities of the receptors, some differences are observed in these two reaction media. These differences arise from the fact that the binding of the *Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) complex to DNA shows a negative cooperativity, whereas the binding to the dendrimer is noncooperative in character. The anticooperative character of the binding that happens in DNA solutions becomes noncooperative when an electrolyte, NaNO(3), is added to the medium. This is related to a condensation of the salt's counterions on the surface of the DNA which produces a decrease of the equilibrium constant corresponding to the binding of the complex to the receptor. Therefore, it is shown that the ionic strength of the reaction medium exerts a great influence on the cooperative nature of the ligand/receptor binding. This also explains the different behavior observed in DNA and dendrimer solutions.

Abstract
A Mannich base derivative of 5,11,17,23-tetrakis-[(1,4-dioxa-8-azaspiro-[4.5]decanyl)methyl]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy calix[4]arene 3 was synthesized by the treatment of calix[4]arene with a cyclic secondary amine (1,4-dioxa-8-azaspiro-[4.5]decane) and formaldehyde. The compound 3 was treated with dibromoxylene to obtain a calix[4]arene-based copolymer 4. In batch sorption experiments of selected carcinogenic azo dyes and aromatic amines, the compounds 3 and 4 were found to be a better sorbent for azo dyes than for the aromatic amines. It was observed that the percentage of azo dye removal was 95-99% for compound 3 and 83-97% for 4 when the pH of the dye solution was in the range of 2.0-8.0. The sorption of azo dyes and aromatic amines by calix[4]arenes-based compounds indicates that amino groups play the major role for the formation of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
QM GIAO calculations of (13)C and (1)H chemical shift values of the ArCH(2)Ar group in N-, O-, and S-substituted calixarene systems were performed with a hybrid DFT functional MPW1PW91 and 6-31G(d,p) basis set. A good reproduction of experimental data was obtained for some representative calixarenes and for a series of simplified calixarene models. This allowed the derivation of chemical shift surfaces versus phi and chi dihedral angles. The applicability of chemical shift surfaces in the study of calixarene conformational features is illustrated.

Abstract
The reaction [Ru(NH3)5pz]2+ + Co(C2O4)33- has been studied in aqueous solutions of p-sulfonatocalix[n]arene (n = 4, 6, and 8). The results are interpreted by using the pseudophase model. Results show that the rigidity and/or flexibility of the assembled rings have a great effect on the thermodynamics of inclusion of the guest into the host and, therefore, on the kinetics of the electron transfer processes that take place in these media. The obtained results are discussed from the viewpoint of two types of interactions: electrostatic and nonelectrostatic. From surface potential measurements, the guest-host interactions have been demonstrated to be mainly due to nonelectrostatic interactions, although the species are charged. So, the nonelectrostatic contribution to the equilibrium constant in all the calixarenes studied is 1 order of magnitude higher than the electrostatic one (Knel = 144 and 884 mol-1 dm3 for p-sulfonatocalix[n]arene (n = 4 and 6, respectively) and Kel approximately 10 mol-1 dm3). Electrostatic interactions also affect the kinetic results.

Abstract
The antibacterial activities of the para-guanidinoethylphenol and of its cyclic tetramer, the tetra-para-guanidinoethyl-calix[4]arene, have been evaluated on reference gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Antibiotic disk diffusion assays completed by micromethod technique were employed to determine if a synergistic effect could be expected from the spatial organisation of the monomer into its cyclic tetrameric analogue. Disk diffusion assays and microdilution experiments revealed better properties for the calixarene species, with a real and important gain of activity with regards to the monomer.

Abstract
The biochemistry of the para-sulfonato-calix[n]arenes has shown rapid development during the past ten years, the highly diverse biomedical applications of these molecules now include anti-viral, anti-thrombotic activities, enzyme blocking and protein complexation. The future is even more promising as para-sulfonato-calix[n]arenes have, now, been shown to have potential in the diagnosis of prion-based diseases. Their innocuous nature, as far as is known at present, may open up their future use in medications.
