The Fluoro Analogue of Wilkinson's Catalyst and Unexpected Ph−Cl Activation

Difluoro Complexes of Platinum(II) and -(IV) with Monodentate Phosphine Ligands: An Exceptional Stability of d6Octahedral Organometallic Fluorides

Complexes (R3P)2PtF2 were prepared by reaction of the corresponding diiodo precursors with AgF in dichloromethane. The intermediate formation of trans- and cis-(R3P)2Pt(I)F was also observed. All fluoro complexes demonstrate a strong preference for the cis-configuration (R = Ph or Et) unless a bulky phosphine ligand is used (R = i-Pr), in which case the trans complex was observed. The Pt(IV) difluoro compounds (R3P)2Ar2PtF2 were obtained by reacting the Pt(II) diaryl precursors with XeF2. The fluoro ligands are located in the trans-position relative to the aryl groups in the overall octahedral environment. The representative Pt(II) and Pt(IV) difluoro complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. All fluoro compounds react rapidly with chlorotrimethylsilane to give the corresponding chloro complexes. The Pt(IV) difluorides are remarkably stable in the C-C reductive elimination reaction, relative to their dichloro analogs which reductively eliminate diaryl within several hours at 45 degrees C in N-methylpyrrolidone. It was found that phosphine dissociation from the octahedral Pt(IV) complex is essential for the reductive elimination reaction to take place, the difluoro complex being kinetically stable even at 60 degrees C.

Routes to unique palladium A-frame complexes with a bridging fluoro-ligand

Treatment of a toluene solution of [PdMe(2)(Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2))](1) with pentafluoropyridine in the presence of traces of water affords the generation of the A-frame complexes [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][SiMeF(4)]() and [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][OC(5)NF(4)](2b). If the reaction is performed in an NMR tube equipped with a PFA inliner, complex 2b is produced, only. Treatment of 1 with pentafluoropyridine in the presence of an excess water yields the pyridyloxy complex [PdMe(OC(5)NF(4))(Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2))](3). Compound [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][FHF](2c) bearing a bifluoride anion instead of SiMeF(4)(-) or OC(5)NF(4)(-) can be generated by reaction of 1 with substoichiometric amounts of Et(3)N.3HF. The analogous complex [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2)}(2)(mu-F)][FHF] (5c) has been synthesized by addition of Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) to a solution of [PdMe(2)(Me(2)NCH(2)CH(2)NMe(2))](4) in THF and subsequent treatment of the reaction mixture with Et(3)N.3HF. The structure of the A-frame complex 5c has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Fluoro Complexes: Part 2.1 Rhodium(I) Fluoro Complexes with Alkene and Phosphine Ligands. Synthesis of the First Isolated Rhodium(I) Bifluoride Complexes. Structure of [Rh3(μ3-OH)2(COD)3](HF2) by X-ray Powder Diffraction

The reaction between [Rh(mu-OH)(COD)](2) (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and 73% HF in THF gives [Rh(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(COD)(3)](HF(2)) (1). Its crystal structure, determined by ab initio X-ray powder diffraction methods (from conventional laboratory data), contains complex trimetallic cations linked together in 1D chains by a mu(3)-OH...F-H-F...HO-mu(3) sequence of strong hydrogen bonds. The complex [Rh(mu-F)(COE)(2)](2) (COE = cyclooctene; 2), prepared by reacting [Rh(mu-OH)(COE)(2)](2) with NEt(3).3HF (3:2), has been characterized. Complex 1 reacts with PR(3) (1:3) to give [RhF(COD)(PR(3))] [R = Ph (3), C(6)H(4)OMe-4 (4), (i)Pr (5), Cy (6)] that can be prepared directly by reacting [Rh(mu-OH)(COD)](2) with 73% HF and PR(3) (1:2:2). The reactions of 1 with PPh(3) or Et(3)P have been studied by NMR spectroscopy at different molar ratios. Complexes [RhF(PEt(3))(3)] (7), [RhF(COD)(PEt(3))] (8), and [RhF(PPh(3))(3)] (9) have been detected. The complex [Rh(F)(NBD)(iPr(3)P)] (NBD = norbornadiene; 10) was prepared by the sequential treatment of [Rh(mu-OMe)(NBD)](2) with 1 equiv of NEt(3).3HF and (i)Pr(3)P. The first isolated bifluoride rhodium(I) complexes [Rh(FHF)(COD)(PR(3))] [R = Ph (11), (i)Pr (12), Cy (13)], obtained by reacting fluoro complexes 3, 5, and 6 with NEt(3).3HF (3:1), have been characterized. The crystal structures of 3 and 11 have been determined.

The first observation of the rhodium monofluoride molecule: Jet-cooled laser spectroscopic studies

Rhodium monofluoride has been observed and spectroscopically characterized. RhF molecules were produced under jet-cooled conditions in a laser vaporization molecular beam source by the reaction of a laser-vaporized rhodium plasma with SF(6) doped in helium, and studied with laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy under both medium and high resolution. More than 25 bands have been observed in laser-induced fluorescence between 18,500 and 24,500 cm(-1) and five of these have been recorded at 200 MHz resolution. All bands of appreciable intensity have been rotationally analyzed. The ground electronic levels has Omega=2, which is attributed to an inverted (3)Pi state from the 2 delta(4)6 pi(3)12 sigma(1) electron configuration. The ground level rotational constants are B=0.272 45 cm(-1), D=1.035 x 10(-7) cm(-1). Very small ground level Lambda doublings are evident in the spectrum. Excited states having Omega=1, 2, and 3 have been identified. Dispersed fluorescence spectroscopy from 11 excited levels has been used to locate a large number of low-lying vibronic states within the energy range up to 8,000 cm(-1). A ground state vibrational interval of approximately 575 cm(-1) is suggested.
