Self-organized porphyrinic materials

The self-assembly and self-organization of porphyrins and related macrocycles enables the bottom-up fabrication of photonic materials for fundamental studies of the photophysics of these materials and for diverse applications. This rapidly developing field encompasses a broad range of disciplines including molecular design and synthesis, materials formation and characterization, and the design and evaluation of devices. Since the self-assembly of porphyrins by electrostatic interactions in the late 1980s to the present, there has been an ever increasing degree of sophistication in the design of porphyrins that self-assemble into discrete arrays or self-organize into polymeric systems. These strategies exploit ionic interactions, hydrogen bonding, coordination chemistry, and dispersion forces to form supramolecular systems with varying degrees of hierarchical order. This review concentrates on the methods to form supramolecular porphyrinic systems by intermolecular interactions other than coordination chemistry, the characterization and properties of these photonic materials, and the prospects for using these in devices. The review is heuristically organized by the predominant intermolecular interactions used and emphasizes how the organization affects properties and potential performance in devices.

Beta-substituted terthiophene [2]rotaxanes

Two kinds of beta-substituted terthiophene [2]rotaxanes were synthesized using the host-guest pairs of the electron-deficient cyclophane cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) and the electron-rich terthiophenes with diethyleneglycol chains at the beta-position. One is made from the alpha-position non-substituted terthiophene (3 T-beta-Rx) and the other is made from the alpha-dibromo-substituted terthiophene (3 TBr-beta-Rx). The binding constants of the beta-substituted terthiophene threads were confirmed to be smaller than that of the alpha-substituted terthiophene analogue. By UV/Vis absorption measurements, we confirmed the charge-transfer (CT) band in the visible region with an extinction coefficient of approximately 10(2) (M(-1) cm(-1)). Strong, but not quantitative, quenching of the terthiophene fluorescence was confirmed for the [2]rotaxanes. Although the beta-substituted terthiophene thread was electrochemically polymerizable, the [2]rotaxane 3 T-beta-Rx was not polymerizable. This result indicates that the interlocked CBPQT(4+) macrocycle effectively suppresses the electrochemical polymerization of the terthiophene unit because electrostatic repulsive and steric effects of CBPQT(4+) hinder the dimerization of the terthiophene radical cations. In the electrochemical measurement, we confirmed the shift of the first reduction peak towards less negative potential compared to free CBPQT(4+) and the splitting of the second reduction peak. These electrochemical behaviors are similar to those observed for the highly-constrained [2]rotaxanes. The beta-substituted terthiophene [2]rotaxanes reported herein are important key compounds to prepare polythiophene polyrotaxanes.

A reverse donor-acceptor bistable [2]catenane

A [2]catenane, composed of a pi-electron-rich bis-1,5-dioxynaphthalene[38]crown10 (BDNP38C10) ring, mechanically interlocked with a large macrocycle containing two disubstituted tetraarylmethane "speed bumps" and two different pi-electron-deficient units--namely, naphthalene dimide (NpI) and bipyridinium (BIPY(2+)) units--has been synthesized from a [2]rotaxane, containing the former recognition unit, after performing two sequential Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloadditions with a linker containing the latter recognition unit. The product, which exists as a single co-conformer, wherein the BDNP38C10 ring encircles the NpI unit, undergoes equilibration to give approximately equal amounts of the other co-conformer in which the BDNP38C10 ring encircles the BIPY(2+) unit.

Challenges and breakthroughs in recent research on self-assembly

The controlled fabrication of nanometer-scale objects is without doubt one of the central issues in current science and technology. However, existing fabrication techniques suffer from several disadvantages including size-restrictions and a general paucity of applicable materials. Because of this, the development of alternative approaches based on supramolecular self-assembly processes is anticipated as a breakthrough methodology. This review article aims to comprehensively summarize the salient aspects of self-assembly through the introduction of the recent challenges and breakthroughs in three categories: (i) types of self-assembly in bulk media; (ii) types of components for self-assembly in bulk media; and (iii) self-assembly at interfaces.

Photochemical conversion of solar energy

Energy is the most important issue of the 21st century. About 85% of our energy comes from fossil fuels, a finite resource unevenly distributed beneath the Earth's surface. Reserves of fossil fuels are progressively decreasing, and their continued use produces harmful effects such as pollution that threatens human health and greenhouse gases associated with global warming. Prompt global action to solve the energy crisis is therefore needed. To pursue such an action, we are urged to save energy and to use energy in more efficient ways, but we are also forced to find alternative energy sources, the most convenient of which is solar energy for several reasons. The sun continuously provides the Earth with a huge amount of energy, fairly distributed all over the world. Its enormous potential as a clean, abundant, and economical energy source, however, cannot be exploited unless it is converted into useful forms of energy. This Review starts with a brief description of the mechanism at the basis of the natural photosynthesis and, then, reports the results obtained so far in the field of photochemical conversion of solar energy. The "grand challenge" for chemists is to find a convenient means for artificial conversion of solar energy into fuels. If chemists succeed to create an artificial photosynthetic process, "... life and civilization will continue as long as the sun shines!", as the Italian scientist Giacomo Ciamician forecast almost one hundred years ago.
