Exchange coupling and magnetic blocking in bipyrimidyl radical-bridged dilanthanide complexes

Terbium Triangle Bridged by a Triazole Nitronyl Nitroxide Radical with Single-Molecule-Magnet Behavior

An unprecedented cyclic Tb^III-radical cluster, [Tb₃(hfac)₆(4-Me-3-NITtrz)₂(OH)₃] (1), has been self-assembled from Tb(hfac)₃·2H₂O and 4-Me-3-NITtrz in the presence of Cu(hfac)₂·2H₂O. Alternating-current magnetic studies show that the Tb₃ cluster displays a dual slow relaxation of magnetization behavior under a zero direct-current (dc) field and a single relaxation process under an induced dc field with an effective energy barrier of 14 K, representing the first triangle 2p-4f cluster with a slow magnetic relaxation property.

Single-Electron Lanthanide-Lanthanide Bonds Inside Fullerenes toward Robust Redox-Active Molecular Magnets

A characteristic phenomenon of lanthanide-fullerene interactions is the transfer of metal valence electrons to the carbon cage. With early lanthanides such as La, a complete transfer of six valence electrons takes place for the metal dimers encapsulated in the fullerene cage. However, the low energy of the σ-type Ln-Ln bonding orbital in the second half of the lanthanide row limits the Ln₂ → fullerene transfer to only five electrons. One electron remains in the Ln-Ln bonding orbital, whereas the fullerene cage with a formal charge of -5 is left electron-deficient. Such Ln₂@C₈₀ molecules are unstable in the neutral form but can be stabilized by substitution of one carbon atom by nitrogen to give azafullerenes Ln₂@C₇₉N or by quenching the unpaired electron on the fullerene cage by reacting it with a chemical such as benzyl bromide, transforming one sp² carbon into an sp³ carbon and yielding the monoadduct Ln₂@C₈₀(CH₂Ph). Because of the presence of the Ln-Ln bonding molecular orbital with one electron, the Ln₂@C₇₉N and Ln₂@C₈₀(R) molecules feature a unique single-electron Ln-Ln bond and an unconventional +2.5 oxidation state of the lanthanides. In this Account, which brings together metallofullerenes, molecular magnets, and lanthanides in unconventional valence states, we review the progress in the studies of dimetallofullerenes with single-electron Ln-Ln bonds and highlight the consequences of the unpaired electron residing in the Ln-Ln bonding orbital for the magnetic interactions between Ln ions. Usually, Ln···Ln exchange coupling in polynuclear lanthanide compounds is weak because of the core nature of 4f electrons. However, when interactions between Ln centers are mediated by a radical bridge, stronger coupling may be achieved because of the diffuse nature of radical-based orbitals. Ultimately, when the role of a radical bridge is played by a single unpaired electron in the Ln-Ln bonding orbital, the strength of the exchange coupling is increased dramatically. Giant exchange coupling in endohedral Ln₂ dimers is combined with a rather strong axial ligand field exerted on the lanthanide ions by the fullerene cage and the excess electron density localized between two Ln ions. As a result, Ln₂@C₇₉N and Ln₂@C₈₀(CH₂Ph) compounds exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization and exceptionally high blocking temperatures for Ln = Dy and Tb. At low temperatures, the [Ln³⁺-e-Ln³⁺] fragment behaves as a single giant spin. Furthermore, the Ln-Ln bonding orbital in dimetallofullerenes is redox-active, which allows its population to be changed by electrochemical reactions, thus changing the magnetic properties because the change in the number of electrons residing in the Ln-Ln orbital affects the magnetic structure of the molecule.

Single-ion anisotropy and exchange coupling in cobalt(ii)-radical complexes: insights from magnetic and ab initio studies

The concurrent effects of single-ion anisotropy and exchange interactions on the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics have been analyzed for a cobalt(ii)-semiquinonate complex. Analogs containing diamagnetic catecholate and tropolonate ligands were employed for comparison of the magnetic behavior and zinc congeners assisted with the spectroscopic characterization and assessment of intermolecular interactions in the cobalt(ii) compounds. Low temperature X-band (ν ≈ 9.4 GHz) and W-Band (ν ≈ 94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and static and dynamic magnetic measurements have been used to elucidate the electronic structure of the high spin cobalt(ii) ion in [Co(Me3tpa)(Br4cat)] (1; Me3tpa = tris[(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)methyl]amine, Br4cat2- = tetrabromocatecholate) and [Co(Me3tpa)(trop)](PF6) (2(PF6); trop- = tropolonate), which show slow relaxation of the magnetization in applied field. The cobalt(ii)-semiquinonate exchange interaction in [Co(Me3tpa)(dbsq)](PF6)·tol (3(PF6)·tol; dbsq- = 3,5-di-tert-butylsemiquinonate, tol = toluene) has been determined using an anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian in conjunction with multistate restricted active space self-consistent field ab initio modeling and wavefunction analysis, with comparison to magnetic and inelastic neutron scattering data. Our results demonstrate dominant ferromagnetic exchange for 3+ that is of similar magnitude to the anisotropy parameters of the cobalt(ii) ion and contains a significant contribution from spin-orbit coupling. The nature of the exchange coupling between octahedral high spin cobalt(ii) and semiquinonate ligands is a longstanding question; answering this question for the specific case of 3+ has confirmed the considerable sensitivity of the exchange to the molecular structure. The methodology employed will be generally applicable for elucidating exchange coupling between orbitally-degenerate metal ions and radical ligands and relevant to the development of bistable molecules and their integration into devices.

Tetraoxolene-bridged rare-earth complexes: a radical-bridged dinuclear Dy single-molecule magnet

Two families of neutral tetraoxolene-bridged dinuclear rare earth complexes of general formula [((HBpz₃)₂RE)₂(μ-tetraoxolene)] (RE = Y and Dy; HBpz₃^- = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate; tetraoxolene = fluoranilate (fa^2-; 1-RE) or bromanilate (ba^2-; 2-RE)) have been synthesised and characterised. In each case, the bridging tetraoxolene ligand is in the diamagnetic dianionic form and each rare earth metal centre has two HBpz₃^- ligands completing the coordination. Electrochemical studies on the soluble 2-RE family reveal a tetraoxolene-based reversible one-electron reduction. Bulk chemical reduction with cobaltocene affords the cobaltocenium (CoCp⁺) salt of the 1e-reduced analogue: [CoCp][((HBpz₃)₂RE)₂(μ-ba˙)] (3-RE) that incorporates a radical trianionic form of the bromanilate bridging ligand. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies of 2-Dy reveal slow magnetic relaxation only in the presence of an applied magnetic field, but reduction to radical-bridged 3-Dy affords frequency-dependent peaks in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility in zero applied field. Exchange coupling between the Dy(iii) ions and the radical bridging ligand thus reduces zero-field magnetisation quantum tunnelling and confers single-molecule magnet status on the complex. Comprehensive analysis of the magnetic relaxation data indicates that a combination of Orbach, Raman and direct relaxation processes are required to fit the data for both dysprosium bromanilate complexes.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a series of Ln(iii) complexes with radical-anionic iminopyridine ligands: effect of lanthanide ions on the slow relaxation of the magnetization

We report the investigation of synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a series of homoleptic Ln(iii) complexes coordinated by radical-anionic iminopyridine ligands of general formula [Ln(IPy)₃]·solv (IPy = iminopyridine; Ln = Tb, Dy, Er, Y, Gd). The dysprosium analogue exhibits a zero-field Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

A Luminescent Thermometer Exhibiting Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization: Toward Self-Monitored Building Blocks for Next-Generation Optomagnetic Devices

The development and integration of Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) into molecular electronic devices continue to be an exciting challenge. In such potential devices, heat generation due to the electric current is a critical issue that has to be considered upon device fabrication. To read out accurately the temperature at the submicrometer spatial range, new multifunctional SMMs need to be developed. Herein, we present the first self-calibrated molecular thermometer with SMM properties, which provides an elegant avenue to address these issues. The employment of 2,2'-bipyrimidine and 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetonate ligands results in a dinuclear compound, [Dy₂(bpm)(tfaa)₆], which exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization along with remarkable photoluminescent properties. This combination allows the gaining of fundamental insight in the electronic properties of the compound and investigation of optomagnetic cross-effects (Zeeman effect). Importantly, spectral variations stemming from two distinct thermal-dependent mechanisms taking place at the molecular level are used to perform luminescence thermometry over the 5-398 K temperature range. Overall, these properties make the proposed system a unique molecular luminescent thermometer bearing SMM properties, which preserves its temperature self-monitoring capability even under applied magnetic fields.

A family of lanthanide complexes with a bis-tridentate nitronyl nitroxide radical: syntheses, structures and magnetic properties

Eleven new lanthanide complexes based on a bis-tridentate nitronyl nitroxide radical NIT-Pm2Py (2-(4,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide), namely (NIT-Pm2Py)Ln(hfac)₃ (Ln = Gd (1_Gd), Tb (2_Tb), Dy (3_Dy), Ho (4_Ho), Er (5_Er), Yb (6_Yb)), [(NIT-Pm2Py)Ln₂(hfac)₆]·xH₂O (Ln = Gd (7_Gd), Tb (8_Tb), Ho (10_Ho), x = 0.5 for 7_Gd and 1 for 8_Tb and 10_Ho) and (NIT-Pm2Py)Ln₂(hfac)₆ (Ln = Dy (9_Dy), Er (11_Er)) were prepared and characterized. These complexes can be selectively prepared by controlling the reaction ratio of Ln(hfac)₃·2H₂O to the radical ligand NIT-Pm2Py. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses confirmed that 1_Gd-6_Yb are isostructural 2p-4f Ln^III-radical complexes, in which the NIT-Pm2Py radical acts as a terminal tridentate ligand chelating to one Ln^III ion. On the other hand, 7_Gd-11_Er are isostructural 4f-2p-4f Ln^III-radical-Ln^III complexes with the NIT-Pm2Py acting as a bridging ligand between two Ln^III ions. 7_Gd-11_Er represent a rare family of complexes showing the NIT bridged 4f-2p-4f three-spin motif. Alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed that complex 6_Yb exhibits field-induced frequency dependence, suggesting a possible field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior. Ab initio calculations were performed on all these complexes. The fitting of the magnetic susceptibilities of these complexes indicates weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the Ln^III and NIT radical.

Dysprosium complexes bearing unsupported DyIII-GeII/SnII metal-metal bonds as single-ion magnets

Two dysprosium complexes bearing unsupported Dy-Ge/Sn metal-metal bonds are reported here, wherein the Dy-Ge and Dy-Sn bonds both contain relatively large covalency. The complexes exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization at zero field with energy barriers of 485 and 620 K, respectively, and the blocking temperature of 6 K.

A New Class of Lanthanide Complexes with Three Ligand Centered Radicals: NMR Evaluation of Ligand Field Energy Splitting and Magnetic Coupling

Combination of three radical anionic Ph-BIAN ligands (Ph-BIAN=bis-(phenylimino)-acenaphthenequinone) with lanthanoid ions leads to a series of homoleptic, six-coordinate complexes of the type Ln(Ph-BIAN)₃ . Magnetic coupling data were measured by paramagnetic solution NMR spectroscopy. Combining ¹ H NMR with ² H NMR of partially deuterated compounds allowed a detailed study of the magnetic susceptibility anisotropies over a large temperature range. The observed chemical shifts were separated into ligand- and metal-centered contributions by comparison with the Y analogue (diamagnetic at the metal). The metal-centered contributions of the complexes with the paramagnetic ions could then be separated into pseudocontact and Fermi contact shifts. The latter is large within the Ph-BIAN scaffold, which shows that magnetic coupling is significant between the lanthanide ion and the radical ligand. Pseudocontact shifts were further correlated to structural data obtained from X-ray diffraction experiments. Ligand-field parameters were determined by fitting the temperature dependence of the observed magnetic susceptibility anisotropies. The electronic structure determined by this approach shows, that the Er and Tm analogues are candidates for single molecule magnets (SMM). These results demonstrate the possibilities for the application of NMR spectroscopy in investigations of paramagnetic systems in general and single molecule magnets in particular.

Synthesis of a series of hetero-multi-spin Ln2Cu3 complexes based on a methyl-pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical with slow magnetic relaxation behaviors

Multinuclear hetero-tri-spin complexes based on a methyl-pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical, namely, [Ln2Cu3(hfac)12(4-NIT-MePyz)4] (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; 4-NIT-MePyz = 2-{4-(1-methyl)-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) have been successfully obtained through a one-pot reaction of the radical ligand (4-NIT-MePyz) with Cu(hfac)2 and Ln(hfac)3. These 2p-3d-4f complexes exhibit five-nuclear structures with the sequence [Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu], in which each 4-NIT-MePyz radical acting as a bidentate bridging ligand is coordinated to one Ln(hfac)3 unit through one oxygen atom of the NO groups and to one Cu(hfac)2 unit with one nitrogen atom from the pyrazole ring. For complex 1, based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations and MAGPACK program, it is concluded that there exist ferromagnetic couplings between GdIII and NIT radicals, as well as between CuII and free radicals with J1 = 6.8(1) and J3 = 1.3(2) cm-1, respectively, and antiferromagnetic interactions between radical and radical with J2 = -2.8(5) cm-1. Complex 2 shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals under a zero or 2000 Oe dc field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior.

Synthesis, Structures, and Single-Molecule Magnetic Properties of Three Dy2 Complexes

To explore the influences of the subtle structural variations in the ligand backbones on the single-molecule magnetic properties of dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, three ligands-H₂ L₁ (H₂ L₁ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(salicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine), H₂ L₂ (H₂ L₂ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), and H₂ L₃ (H₂ L₃ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(5-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine)-were synthesized and employed to prepare the expected dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes. The three ligands differ in terms of the substituents at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde moieties. The reactions of Dy(NO₃ )₃ ⋅6 H₂ O, pivalic acid, and the ligands H₂ L₁ , H₂ L₂ , and H₂ L₃ generated complexes with the formulae [Dy₂ (L₁ )₂ (piv)₂ ] (1), [Dy₂ (L₂ )₂ (piv)₂ ] (2), and [Dy₂ (L₃ )₂ (piv)₂ ]⋅ 2 MeCN (3), respectively. The purposeful attachment of the functional groups with varied sizes at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde backbones resulted in slight differences in the Dy-O-Dy bond angles and the Dy⋅⋅⋅Dy bond lengths in 1-3; consequently, the three complexes exhibited distinct magnetic properties. They all showed slow magnetization relaxation with energy barriers of 40.32 (1), 31.67 (2), and 33.53 K (3). Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on complexes 1-3 to rationalize the slight discrepancy observed in the magnetic behavior. The calculated results satisfactorily explained the experimental outcomes.

Europium and ytterbium complexes with o-iminoquinonato ligands: synthesis, structure, and magnetic behavior

Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.

Determination of the electronic structure of a dinuclear dysprosium single molecule magnet without symmetry idealization

We present the in-depth determination of the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the luminescent and volatile dysprosium-based single molecule magnet [Dy2(bpm)(fod)6] (Hfod = 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione, bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine). Ab initio calculations were used to obtain a global picture of the electronic structure and to predict possible single molecule magnet behaviour, confirmed by experiments. The orientation of the susceptibility tensor was determined by means of cantilever torque magnetometry. An experimental determination of the electronic structure of the lanthanide ion was obtained combining Luminescence, Far Infrared and Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectroscopies. Fitting these energies to the full single ion plus crystal field Hamiltonian allowed determination of the eigenstates and crystal field parameters of a lanthanide complex without symmetry idealization. We then discuss the impact of a stepwise symmetry idealization on the modelling of the experimental data. This result is particularly important in view of the misleading outcomes that are often obtained when the symmetry of lanthanide complexes is idealized.

Spectroscopic Determination of the Electronic Structure of a Uranium Single-Ion Magnet

Early actinide ions have large spin-orbit couplings and crystal field interactions, leading to large anisotropies. The success in using actinides as single-molecule magnets has so far been modest, underlining the need for rational strategies. Indeed, the electronic structure of actinide single-molecule magnets and its relation to their magnetic properties remains largely unexplored. A uranium(III) single-molecule magnet, [U^III {SiMe₂ NPh}₃ -tacn)(OPPh₃ )] (tacn=1,4,7-triazacyclononane), has been investigated by means of a combination of magnetic, spectroscopic and theoretical methods to elucidate the origin of its static and dynamic magnetic properties.

Slow relaxation of the magnetization observed in mononuclear Ln-radical compounds with D4d geometry configurations

The combination of LnIII ions (GdIII, TbIII or DyIII) and a pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical results in three isomorphous complexes, namely, [Ln(hfac)3(NIT-Pyz)]2 (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; NIT-Pyz = 2-{3-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that all of them are composed of two crystallographically independent mononuclear systems, in which the central LnIII ions are coordinated by three hfac and one bidentate chelating NIT-Pyz radical. The central LnIII ions are all in square antiprism geometry (D4d) polyhedron configurations. Based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations, there exist antiferromagnetic couplings in the GdIII-NIT radical system in complex 1. Complexes 2 and 3 show frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals in a zero field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior. Moreover, Tb's complex (2) shows a single thermal relaxation process with an energy barrier of 26 K. For Dy's complex (3), the Orbach and Raman processes both contribute to the magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Magnetic investigations over reversibly switched chiral (phthalocyaninato)(porphyrinato) dysprosium double-decker compounds

The present work represents one example of reversibly tuning the molecular magnetic properties of Ln-based compounds and elucidates an abnormal f-radical effect.

A tetradentate 8-hydroxyquinoline-based acyl hydrazine ligand was used to construct a series of mono/di-nuclear dysprosium single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with nearly ideal pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry (D_5h).

Magnetic on-off switching in redox non-innocent ligand bridged binuclear cobalt complexes

The redox non-innocent ligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym) reacted with two molar equivalents of LCo(tol) (L = CH(MeC[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)₂, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) to afford the binuclear Co^II complex (LCo)₂(μ-bpym) (1), in which the bpym moiety accepts two electrons from the metal centers and in the dianion state. Complex 1 readily underwent one-electron oxidation when treated with [Cp₂Fe]⁺[BPh₄]^- affording the cation salt [(LCo)₂(μ-bpym)][BPh₄] (2) with the bpym moiety in the radical anion state. Meanwhile, complex 2 could be converted back to 1 with elemental potassium. The magnetic studies revealed that complex 2 is a single molecular magnet (SMM) under a small external field, while 1 has no SMM activity. This represents a new example of a SMM exhibiting a fully reversible 'on/off' switching ability in anodic and neutral states.

High-temperature magnetic blocking and magneto-structural correlations in a series of dysprosium(iii) metallocenium single-molecule magnets

A series of dysprosium(iii) metallocenium salts, [Dy(CpiPr4R)2][B(C6F5)4] (R = H (1), Me (2), Et (3), iPr (4)), was synthesized by reaction of DyI3 with the corresponding known NaCpiPr4R (R = H, iPr) and novel NaCpiPr4R (R = Me, Et) salts at high temperature, followed by iodide abstraction with [H(SiEt3)2][B(C6F5)4]. Variation of the substituents in this series results in substantial changes in molecular structure, with more sterically-encumbering cyclopentadienyl ligands promoting longer Dy-C distances and larger Cp-Dy-Cp angles. Dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal that these structural changes have a considerable impact on the magnetic relaxation behavior and operating temperature of each compound. In particular, the magnetic relaxation barrier increases as the Dy-C distance decreases and the Cp-Dy-Cp angle increases. An overall 45 K increase in the magnetic blocking temperature is observed across the series, with compounds 2-4 exhibiting the highest 100 s blocking temperatures yet reported for a single-molecule magnet. Compound 2 possesses the highest operating temperature of the series with a 100 s blocking temperature of 62 K. Concomitant increases in the effective relaxation barrier and the maximum magnetic hysteresis temperature are observed, with 2 displaying a barrier of 1468 cm-1 and open magnetic hysteresis as high as 72 K at a sweep rate of 3.1 mT s-1. Magneto-structural correlations are discussed with the goal of guiding the synthesis of future high operating temperature DyIII metallocenium single-molecule magnets.

Heterometallic MIILnIII (M = Co/Zn; Ln = Dy/Y) Complexes with Pentagonal Bipyramidal 3d Centers: Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

We herein reported the syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of three dinuclear heterometallic M^IILn^III complexes, namely, [M^IILn^III(H₂L)(CH₃OH)₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)·S (M = Co, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH (1_CoDy); M = Zn, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH (2_ZnDy); M = Co, Ln = Y, S = MeNO₂ (3_CoY), H₄L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis[2-(semicarbazono) propionylhydrazone]. Synthesized from the predesigned multidentate ligand H₄L, which has two different coordination pockets (smaller N₃O₂ and larger N₂O₄ pockets) suitable for either a 3d or a 4f metal center, all these complexes have very similar structures, where the M^II centers possess a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry and the Ln^III sites have a tetradecahedron geometry. Magnetic measurements on these compounds revealed the existence of weak ferromagnetic coupling between the Co²⁺ and Dy³⁺ centers and the field-induced slow magnetic relaxation of all three complexes. Furthermore, theoretical calculation on all these complexes indicates that although the change of the diamagnetic Zn²⁺ ion to the paramagnetic Co²⁺ ion only slightly modifies the local magnetic anisotropy of the Dy³⁺ ion, the weak Co-Dy magnetic interaction decreases the energy barrier. These compounds are the first systematic results of a heterometallic 3d-4f single-molecule magnet containing predesigned PBP 3d metal ions.

A New {Dy5} Single-Molecule Magnet Bearing the Schiff Base Ligand N-Naphthalidene-2-amino-5-chlorophenol

A new {Dy5} cluster compound has been synthesized and structurally characterized from the initial use of the Schiff base ligand N-naphthalidene-2-amino-5-chlorophenol (nacpH2) in coordination chemistry. The 1:1 reaction between Dy(hpd)3∙2H2O and nacpH2, in a solvent mixture comprising CH2Cl2 and MeOH, afforded orange crystals of [Dy5(OH)2(hpd)3(nacp)5(MeOH)5] (1) in 70% yield, where hpd− is the anion of 3,5-heptadione. The {Dy5} complex can be described as two vertical {Dy3(μ3-OH)}8+ triangles sharing a common vertex; such a metal topology is unprecedented in 4f-metal cluster chemistry. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of some weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the five DyIII ions at low temperatures. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements at zero applied dc field showed that complex 1∙3MeOH∙CH2Cl2 exhibits temperature- and frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals below ~20 K, characteristics of a single-molecule magnet (SMM). The resulting relaxation times were used to construct an Arrhenius-type plot and determine an effective energy barrier, Ueff, of 100 K for the magnetization reversal. The application of a small dc field of 200 Oe resulted in the surpassing of the quantum tunneling process and subsequently the increase of the Ueff to a value of 170 K. The reported results are part of a long-term program aiming at the preparation of structurally and magnetically interesting lanthanide complexes bearing various Schiff base chelating/bridging ligands.

A soft phosphorus atom to "harden" an erbium(iii) single-ion magnet

Beyond the lanthanide organometallic single-ion magnet (SIM) (Cp*)Er(COT)1 ([Cp*]- = pentamethylcyclopentadienide; COT2- = cyclooctatetraenide) that has a good performance, we managed to replace one coordinated carbon atom on the [Cp*]- ring by a soft phosphorus atom and obtained (Dsp)Er(COT) (CCDC No. ; 1835955; Dsp- = 3,4-dimethyl-2,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)phospholyl) whose sandwich structure is reported here for the first time. This substitution results in a remarkable change of magnetic dynamics. It exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under a zero applied direct current (DC) magnetic field with an energy barrier (Δ/k B) of 358 K and magnetic hysteresis up to 9 K, both of which are higher than those of (Cp*)Er(COT). With the descended local symmetry of (Dsp)Er(COT), the energy barrier and blocking temperature (T B) both improve unexpectedly and are among the highest ones in Er(iii)-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs).

Lanthanide(III)-Based Single-Ion Magnets

Mononuclear lanthanide-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) are known since 2003 with the discovery of SIM properties in a bis-(phthalocyaninato)lanthanide complex. A recent report on [Dy(Cp^ttt)₂][BC₆F₅] indicating that it exhibits the highest known blocking temperature (60 K) has spurred fresh interest in this area. In this article, we discuss about the various requirements of lanthanide-based SIMs along with representative examples. Specifically, we describe the complexes whose coordination numbers vary from 2 to 8. We also discuss the representative examples of organometallic lanthanide complexes that can function as molecular magnets.

Dinuclear Dy2 Single-Molecule Magnets: Functional Modulation on the Bridging Ligand and Different Relaxation Performances within the Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal System

Crystal structures, single-molecule magnetic behavior, and ab initio calculations of four new phenoxo-bridged dinuclear dysprosium complexes and their gadolinium(III) analogues are explored. Complexes [Dy₂ (DMOMP)₂ (DBM)₄ ]₂ ⋅CHCl₃ (1; DMOMP=1-methyl-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxybenzene, DBM=1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione); [Dy₂ (DMOAP)₂ (DBM)₄ ]₂ ⋅CHCl₃ (2; DMOAP=syringaldehyde); Dy₂ (DMOEP)₂ (DBM)₄ (3; DMOEP=methyl syringate); and solvent-free Dy₂ (DMOMP)₂ (DBM)₄ (4), which is obtained by the transformation of single crystal into single crystal from 1, have nearly identical core structures and only differ in the substituents at the para position of the phenol moieties of the bridging ligand. In this system, the electronic effects are efficiently implemented to significantly modify the ligand field strength and exchange coupling by modulating the substituents on the phenol backbone. The effective energy barrier (U_eff ) of magnetization reversal is improved significantly to fivefold magnitude, at most, and the hysteresis temperature up to 3.5 K by deliberately using the electron-withdrawing substituent to replace the electron-donating one. The origin of the two relaxation processes in 1 is mostly attributed to the existence of two molecules in one unit, which is illuminated by means of the transformation of single crystal into single crystal.

Enriching lanthanide single-ion magnetism through symmetry and axiality

Rapidly growing modern information technology demands energy and cost efficient tools that can efficiently store and process a large amount of data. However, the miniaturization technology that was being used to boost the performance of the electronic devices, keeping up with the pace as estimated by Moore's law, is reaching its limit. To overcome these challenges, several alternative routes that can eventually mimic the modern electronics fabrication using silicon have been proposed. Single molecule magnets (SMMs), being considered as one of the potential alternatives, have gone through significant progress and the focus has shifted from the use of polynuclear clusters to mononuclear complexes in the last few years. The recent frenzy in the field of SMMs is driven by a better understanding of the effects of crystal field (CF) and molecular symmetry on the magnetic properties, especially in the case of mononuclear paramagnetic complexes, apart from other controlling factors. This has led to the advent of highly anisotropic single-ion magnets (SIMs) with magnetic blocking temperatures as high as 60 K and anisotropic energy barriers over 1800 K. This article overviews our recent research in the light of the emergence of the importance of CF and symmetry in 4f ion based single-ion magnets (SIMs), especially in the context of SIMs with D5h symmetry, apart from commenting on the synthetic efforts adopted to place these metal ions in unusual coordination geometries.

Giant exchange coupling and field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization in Gd2@C79N with a single-electron Gd-Gd bond

Magnetic properties of the azafullerene Gd2@C79N are studied by SQUID magnetometry. The effective exchange coupling constant jGd,e between the Gd spins and the spin of unpaired electron residing on the single-electron Gd-Gd bond is determined to be 170 ± 10 cm-1. Low temperature AC measurements revealed field-induced millisecond-long relaxation of magnetization.

Activation of C-H bonds by rare-earth metallocene-butyl complexes

The stable metallocene-butyl complexes [(Cp^Me)₂M(ⁿBu)]₂ (M = Y, Dy) were synthesized and their reactivity towards to ferrocene and bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes investigated. Selective mono-deprotonation of ferrocene and a benzylic methyl group of IMes were observed, whereas a control reaction of (Cp^Me)₃M with IMes resulted in a normal-to-abnormal NHC rearrangement.

Geometry and magnetic interaction modulations in dinuclear Dy2 single-molecule magnets

Geometry and magnetic interaction modulations in a series of dinuclear dysprosium compounds, [Dy₂Lz₂(OAc)₆]·2CH₃OH (1), [Dy₂Lz₂(C₆H₅CO₂)₆]·2CH₃CN (2), and [Dy₂L₂(SO₃CF₃)₄THF₄] (3) (Lz = 6-pyridin-2-yl-[1,3,5]triazine-2,4-diamine; L = N-(2,3-dimethylbut-3-en-2-yl)-N-hydroxynitrous amide; THF = tetrahydrofuran), can effectively tune the relaxation dynamics of magnetization. The dysprosium centres of compounds 2 and 3 display a hula hoop-like geometry; however, those in 1 show the monocapped square antiprismatic geometries. Moreover, the Dy₂ cores of compounds 1 and 3 were linked by μ₂-η¹:η¹ and μ₂-η¹:η² bridging modes, thus generating shorter intramolecular DyDy distances as compared to those in compound 2. Consequently, these three compounds demonstrate distinct magnetic properties. Compounds 1 and 2 behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) under an appropriate static dc field; in addition, 2 displays field-induced multiple relaxation processes under a 1000 Oe dc field. Compound 3 shows a high relaxation energy barrier of 102 K in the zero dc field. These three interesting compounds with Dy₂ cores shed light on the coordination geometry and magnetic interactions for the modulation of the properties of SMMs.

Exchange coupling and single molecule magnetism in redox-active tetraoxolene-bridged dilanthanide complexes

Tetraoxolene radical-bridged lanthanide SMM systems were prepared for the first time by reduction of the respective neutral compounds. Magnetic measurements reveal the profound influence of the radical center on magnetic behavior. Strong magnetic couplings are revealed in the radical species, which switch on SMM behavior under zero applied field for DyIII and TbIII compounds. HFEPR spectra unravel the contributions of the magnetic coupling and the magnetic anisotropy. For GdIII this results in much more accurate magnetic coupling parameters with respect to bulk magnetic measurements.
