Abstract
Metal hydride catalyzed hydrocarbonation reactions of alkenes are an efficient approach to construct new carbon-carbon bonds from readily available alkenes. However, the regioselectivity of hydrocarbonation remains challenging to be controlled. In nickel hydride (NiH) catalyzed hydrocarbonation, linear selectivity is most often obtained because of the relative stability of the linear Ni-alkyl intermediate over its branched counterpart. Herein, we show that the boronic pinacol ester (Bpin) group directs a Ni-catalyzed hydrocarbonation to occur at its adjacent carbon center, resulting in formal branch selectivity. Both alkyl and aryl halides can be used as electrophiles in this hydrocarbonation, providing access to a wide range of secondary alkyl Bpin derivatives, which are valuable building blocks in synthetic chemistry. The utility of the method is demonstrated by the late-stage functionalization of natural products and drug molecules, the synthesis of an anticancer agent, and iterative syntheses.

Abstract
Chiral polyfluoroarene derivatives are an important scaffold in chemistry. An unprecedented enantioselective C-H alkylation of polyfluoroarenes with alkenes is described. The reaction employs bulky chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for nickel catalysts to enable exclusive activation of C-H bonds over C-F bonds and complete endo-selective C-H annulation and excellent enantioselectivity. A wide variety of chiral fluorotetralins, compounds otherwise difficultly accessed but serve as important bioisosteric analogs of both tetralin and heterocycle units for drug design, are expediently synthesized from easily available substrates. To our knowledge, this is the first example of catalytic enantioselective C-H functionalization of polyfluoroarenes.

Abstract
The direct and selective functionalization of relatively simple and readily accessible precursors to produce highly functionalized alkyl boronates is a synthetically useful process. Herein we report a NiH-catalyzed remote hydroarylation process that can, through a synergistic combination of chain walking and subsequent cross-coupling, introduce an aryl group at the adjacent carbon atom of alkyl boronates under mild conditions. By means of a preliminary experiment with moderate enantioselectivity, it was shown that an asymmetric version could also be realized.

Abstract
The alkylation of C-H bonds (hydroarylation) in aromatic amides with non-activated 1-alkenes using a rhodium catalyst and assisted by an 8-aminoquinoline directing group is reported. The addition of a carboxylic acid is crucial for the success of this reaction. The results of deuterium-labeling experiments indicate that one of deuterium atoms in the alkene is missing, suggesting that the reaction does not proceed through the commonly accepted mechanism for C-H alkylation reactions. Instead the reaction is proposed to proceed through a carbene mechanism. The carbene mechanism is also supported by preliminary DFT calculations.

Nickel-catalysed selective migratory hydrothiolation of alkenes and alkynes with thiols. Nat Commun 2019; 10:1752. Abstract
Direct (utilize easily available and abundant precursors) and selective (both chemo- and regio-) aliphatic C–H functionalization is an attractive mean with which to streamline chemical synthesis. With many possible sites of reaction, traditional methods often need an adjacent polar directing group nearby to achieve high regio- and chemoselectivity and are often restricted to a single site of functionalization. Here we report a remote aliphatic C–H thiolation process with predictable and switchable regioselectivity through NiH-catalysed migratory hydrothiolation of two feedstock chemicals (alkenes/alkynes and thiols). This mild reaction avoids the preparation of electrophilic thiolation reagents and is highly selective to thiols over other nucleophilic groups, such as alcohols, acids, amines, and amides. Mechanistic studies show that the reaction occurs through the formation of an RS-Bpin intermediate, and THF as the solvent plays an important role in the regeneration of NiH species. Construction of C–S bonds via C–H functionalization is an attractive route to organosulfur compounds. Here, the authors show the synergistic combination of NiH-catalysed alkene isomerization and subsequent thiolation to afford remote hydrothiolation products from alkenes (or alkynes) and thiols under mild conditions.

Abstract
The reaction of N-heteroaromatic compounds, such as 2-aryl-pyrrole, benzimidazole, imidazole, indole, and pyrazole derivatives, with alkynes in the presence of a catalytic amount of a nickel complex results in C-H/N-H oxidative annulation. The reaction shows a high functional group compatibility. While both Ni(0) and Ni(ii) complexes show a high catalytic activity, Ni(0) is proposed as a key catalytic species in the main catalytic cycle. In the case of the Ni(ii) system, the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong base, such as KOBu t , is required for the reaction to proceed. In sharp contrast, a base is not required in the case of the Ni(0) system. The proposed mechanism is supported by DFT studies.

Abstract
The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Abstract
Highly enantioselective nickel-catalyzed alkene endo-hydroarylations were accomplished with full selectivity by organometallic C-H activation. The asymmetric assembly of chiral six-membered scaffolds proved viable in the absence of pyrophoric organoaluminum reagents within an unprecedented nickel/JoSPOphos manifold.

Abstract
Reported here is a terminal-selective, remote asymmetric hydroalkylation of olefins with racemic α-bromo amides. The reaction proceeds by NiH-catalyzed alkene isomerization and subsequent alkylation reaction, and can enantioconvergently introduce an unsymmetrical secondary alkyl group from a racemic α-bromo amide onto a terminal C(sp3 )-H position along the hydrocarbon chain of the alkene. This mild process affords a range of structurally diverse chiral α-alkylalkanoic amides in excellent yields, and high regio- and enantioselectivities. In addition, the synthetic utility of this protocol is further highlighted by the regioconvergent conversion of industrial raw materials of isomeric olefin mixtures into enantioriched α-alkylalkanoic amides on large scale.

Abstract
C-H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C-H activation until summer 2018.

Abstract
A mild, chemo- and site-selective catalytic protocol that allows for incorporating an alkylboron fragment into unactivated olefins is described. The use of internal olefins enables C-C bond-formation at remote sp3 C-H sites, constituting a complementary and conceptually different approach to existing borylation techniques that are currently available at sp3 centers.

Abstract
Metal migration through a carbon chain is a versatile method for achieving remote functionalization. However, almost all known examples involve the overall net migration of alkylmetal species. Here, we report that allylrhodium species obtained from hydrorhodation of 1,3-dienes undergo chain walking toward esters, amides, or (hetero)arenes over distances of up to eight methylene units. The final, more highly conjugated allylrhodium species undergo nucleophilic allylation with aldehydes and with an imine to give Z-homoallylic alcohols and amines, respectively.
