Abstract
The chemical versatility of carbon imparts manifold properties to organic compounds, where magnetism remains one of the most desirable but elusive1. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, also referred to as nanographenes, show a critical dependence of electronic structure on the topologies of the edges and the π-electron network, which makes them model systems with which to engineer unconventional properties including magnetism. In 1972, Erich Clar envisioned a bow-tie-shaped nanographene, C38H18 (refs. 2,3), where topological frustration in the π-electron network renders it impossible to assign a classical Kekulé structure without leaving unpaired electrons, driving the system into a magnetically non-trivial ground state4. Here, we report the experimental realization and in-depth characterization of this emblematic nanographene, known as Clar's goblet. Scanning tunnelling microscopy and spin excitation spectroscopy of individual molecules on a gold surface reveal a robust antiferromagnetic order with an exchange-coupling strength of 23 meV, exceeding the Landauer limit of minimum energy dissipation at room temperature5. Through atomic manipulation, we realize switching of magnetic ground states in molecules with quenched spins. Our results provide direct evidence of carbon magnetism in a hitherto unrealized class of nanographenes6, and prove a long-predicted paradigm where topological frustration entails unconventional magnetism, with implications for room-temperature carbon-based spintronics7,8.

Abstract
How does edge modification affect spin distribution in open-shell graphene fragments? We investigated this effect by analyzing spin-delocalization in benzo[cd]-triangulene, a spin 1/2 graphene fragment composed of seven benzenoid rings fused in a hybrid zigzag/armchair fashion. Six rings of this system form the core of Clar's hydrocarbon triangulene, to which an additional ring is annulated in the zigzag region. The singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) of this hydrocarbon radical resembles both SOMOs of triangulene, but the spin density is distributed over the core in a nonuniform fashion. The uneven spin distribution is reflected in the reactivity-reaction with oxygen occurs selectively at a position with the highest spin density-and correlates nicely with relative stabilities of the corresponding Clar resonance structures. The spin distribution is different from that of a topologically similar compound composed of the same number of sp2 carbon atoms but featuring six rings only, illustrating the impact of subtle structural changes on spin-density distribution. This compound was characterized by means of UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Storing and transferring electrons for multi-electron reduction processes are considered to be the key steps in various important chemical and biological transformations. In this work, we accomplished multi-electron reduction of a carboxylic acid via a hydrosilylation pathway where a redox-active phenalenyl backbone in Co(PLY-O,O)2(THF)2, stores electrons and plays a preponderant role in the entire process. This reduction proceeds by single electron transfer (SET) from the mono-reduced ligand backbone leading to the cleavage of the Si-H bond. Several important intermediates along the catalytic reduction reaction have been isolated and well characterized to prove that the redox equivalent is stored in the form of a C-H bond in the PLY backbone via a ligand dearomatization process. The ligand's extensive participation in storing a hydride equivalent has been conclusively elucidated via a deuterium labelling experiment. This is a rare example where the ligand orchestrates the multielectron reduction process leaving only the metal to maintain the conformational requirements and fine tunes the electronics of the catalyst.

Abstract
The exceptional performance of oxobenzene-bridged bis-1,2,3-dithiazolyls 6 as single-component neutral radical conductors arises from the presence of a low-lying π-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, which reduces the potential barrier to charge transport and increases the kinetic stabilization energy of the metallic state. As part of ongoing efforts to modify the solid-state structures and transport properties of these so-called multiorbital materials, we report the preparation and characterization of the acetoxy, methoxy, and thiomethyl derivatives 6 (R = OAc, OMe, SMe). The crystal structures are based on ribbonlike arrays of radicals laced together by S···N' and S···O' secondary bonding interactions. The steric and electronic effects of the exocyclic ligands varies, affording one-dimensional (1D) π-stacked radicals for R = OAc, 1D cofacial dimer π-stacks for R = SMe, and a pseudo two-dimensional (2D) brick-wall arrangement for R = OMe. Variable-temperature magnetic and conductivity measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic interactions and Mott insulating behavior for the two radical-based structures (R = OAc, OMe), with lower room-temperature conductivities (σRT ≈ 1 × 10-4 and ∼1 × 10-3 S cm-1, respectively) and higher thermal activation energies ( Eact = 0.24 and 0.21 eV, respectively) than found for the ideal 2D brick-wall structure of 6 (R = F), where σRT ≈ 1 × 10-2 S cm-1 and Eact = 0.10 eV. The performance of R = OMe, OAc relative to that of R = F, is consistent with the results of density functional theory band electronic structure calculations, which indicate a lower kinetic stabilization energy of the putative metallic state arising from their reduced electronic dimensionality.

Abstract
Recently, long-lived, organic radical species have attracted much attention from chemists and material scientists because of their unique electronic properties derived from their magnetic spin and singly occupied molecular orbitals. Most stable and persistent organic radicals are heteroatom-centered radicals, whereas carbon-centered radicals are generally very reactive and therefore have had limited applications. Because the physical properties of carbon-centered radicals depend predominantly on the topology of the π-electron array, the development of new carbon-centered radicals is key to new basic molecular skeletons that promise novel and diverse applications of spin materials. This account summarizes our recent studies on the development of novel carbon-centered radicals, including phenalenyl, fluorenyl, and triarylmethyl radicals.

Abstract
Open-shell, π-conjugated molecules represent exciting next-generation materials due to their unique optoelectronic and magnetic properties and their potential to exploit unpaired spin densities to engineer exceptionally close π-π interactions. However, prior syntheses of ambient stable, open-shell molecules required lengthy routes and displayed intermolecular spin-spin coupling with limited dimensionality. Here we report a general fragment-coupling strategy with phenalenone that enables the rapid construction of both biradicaloid (Ph2- s-IDPL, 1) and radical [10(OTf)] bisphenalenyls in ≤7 steps from commercial starting materials. Significantly, we have discovered an electronically stabilized π-radical cation [10(OTf)] that shows multiple intermolecular closer-than-vdW contacts (<3.4 Å) in its X-ray crystal structure. DFT simulations reveal that each of these close π-π interactions allows for intermolecular spin-spin coupling to occur and suggests that 10(OTf) achieves electrostatically enhanced intermolecular covalent-bonding interactions in two dimensions. Single crystal devices were fabricated from 10(OTf) and demonstrate average electrical conductivities of 1.31 × 10-2 S/cm. Overall, these studies highlight the practical synthesis and device application of a new π-conjugated material, based on a design principle that promises to facilitate spin and charge transport.

Abstract
An efficient route towards a heterogeneous transition metal-free catalytic C-H functionalization using a covalently linked graphene oxide-phenalenyl conjugate is described herein (28 examples, which include a core of some biologically relevant biaryl and hetero-biaryls). It is an environmentally benign, economical and heterogeneous platform, whose catalytic activity can easily be regenerated through a simple washing-drying technique and the catalytic activity can be retained even after 10 cycles.

Abstract
From the analysis based on the broken-symmetry density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we in this study propose a strategy to enhance the open-shell characters and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of π-stacked dimers composed of antiaromatic molecules with weak open-shell characters. For this purpose, we here constructed cofacial π-stacked dimer models composed of aromatic and antiaromatic NiII porphyrins in order to examine the π-π stacking distance (R) dependence of the diradical characters (y) and static second hyperpolarizabilities (γ). The antiaromatic porphyrin dimers are found to have intermediate y around R∼3.3 Å, the result of which originates in the unique intermolecular interactions between the antiaromatic monomers. Static γ along the stacking direction of such antiaromatic porphyrin dimers with intermediate diradical characters are shown to be enhanced significantly as compared to those of the isolated monomers and the aromatic porphyrin dimers.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis and properties of 13,14-dimethylcethrene, a prototype of a chiral diradicaloid photochemical switch that can be transformed reversibly via conrotatory electrocyclization to its more stable closed form by light (630 nm) or heat and back to its open form by light (365 nm). This system illustrates how the chemical reactivity of a diradicaloid molecule can be translated into a switching function, which alters substantially all electronic parameters, namely, the HOMO-LUMO and the singlet-triplet (ST) energy gaps, and the degree of helical twist. As a result, distinct changes in the optical and chiroptical properties of this system were observed, which allowed us to monitor the switching process by a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including NMR, UV-vis, and CD. In comparison to the previously reported parent molecule cethrene, this system benefits from two methyl substituents installed in the fjord region, which account for the stability of the closed form against oxidation and racemization. The methyl substituents increase the ST energy gap of 13,14-dimethylcethrene by ∼4 kcal mol-1 in comparison to cethrene. Our DFT calculations reveal that the larger ST gap is a result of electronic and geometric effects of the methyl substituents and show the potential of related systems to act as magnetic switches at room temperature.

Abstract
One of the first steps in designing ferromagnetic (FM) molecular materials of p-block radicals is the suppression of covalent radical-radical interactions that stabilize a diamagnetic ground state. In this contribution, we demonstrate that FM coupling between p-block radicals can be achieved by constructing mixed dimers from different radicals with differing symmetries of their singly occupied molecular orbitals. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by studying magnetic interactions in organic radical dimers built from different derivatives of the well-known phenalenyl radical. The calculated enthalpies of dimerization for different homo- and heterodimers show that the formation of a mixed dimer with FM coupling is favored compared to the formation of homodimers with antiferromagenetic (AFM) coupling. We argue that cocrystallization of radicals with specifically tuned morphologies of their singly occupied molecular orbitals is a feasible and promising approach in designing new organic magnetic materials.

Abstract
1-Boraphenalenes have been synthesized by reaction of BBr3 with 1-(aryl-ethynyl)naphthalenes, 1-ethynylnaphthalene, and 1-(pent-1-yn-1-yl)naphthalene and they can be selectively functionalized at boron or carbon to form bench-stable products. All of these 1-boraphenalenes have LUMOs localized on the planar C12 B core that are closely comparable in character to isoelectronic phenalenyl cations. In contrast to the comparable LUMOs, the aromatic stabilization of the C5 B ring in 1-boraphenalenes is dramatically lower than the C6 rings in phenalenyl cations. This is due to the occupied orbitals of π symmetry being less delocalised in the 1-boraphenalenes.

Abstract
In recent years, merging different types of catalysis in a single pot has drawn considerable attention and these catalytic processes have mainly relied upon metals. However, development of a completely metal free approach integrating organic redox and organic Lewis acidic property into a single system has been missing in the current literature. This study establishes that a redox active phenalenyl cation can activate one of the substrates by single electron transfer process while the same can activate the other substrate by a donor-acceptor type interaction using its Lewis acidity. This approach has successfully achieved light and metal-free catalytic C-H functionalization of unactivated arenes at ambient temperature (39 entries, including core moiety of a top-selling molecule boscalid), an economically attractive alternative to the rare metal-based multicatalysts process. A tandem approach involving trapping of reaction intermediates, spectroscopy along with density functional theory calculations unravels the dual role of phenalenyl cation.

Abstract
The crystal structure of [4-damp])2 [Cl4 Q]3 (4-damp=4-dimethylamino-N-methylpyridinium, Cl4 Q=tetrachloroquinone) salt is built up from slipped columnar stacks of quinoid rings composed of closely bound trimers with the intra-trimer separation distance of 2.84 Å and total charge of -2 whereas the inter-trimer distance is 3.59 Å. The individual rings exhibit partial negative charges that are distributed unevenly among the three Cl4 Qs in the trimer. The strong interactions within a trimer (Cl4 Q)32- have a partially covalent character with two-electron/multicentered bonding, that is extended over three rings, plausibly termed as "pancake bonding". The electron pairing within this multicentre bond leads to the fact that the crystals are diamagnetic and act as insulators. The studies of the structure and nature of bonding are based on X-ray charge density analysis and density functional theory.

Abstract
Tunability of the open-shell character, charge asymmetry, and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of covalently linked (hetero)phenalenyl dimers are investigated by using the density functional theory method. By changing the molecular species X and substitution position (i, j) for the linker part, a variety of intermonomer distances R and relative alignments between the phenalenyl dimers can be realized from the geometry optimizations, resulting in a wide-range tuning of diradical character y and charge asymmetry. It is found that the static second hyperpolarizabilities along the stacking direction, γyyyy , are one-order enhanced for phenalenyl dimer systems exhibiting intermediate y, a feature that is in good agreement with the "y-γ correlation". By replacing the central carbon atoms of the phenalenyl rings with a boron or a nitrogen, we have also designed covalently linked heterophenalenyl dimers. The introduction of such a charge asymmetry to the open-shell systems, which leads to closed-shell ionic ground states, is found to further enhance the γyyyy values of the systems having longer intermonomer distance R with intermediate ionic character, that is, charge asymmetry. The present results demonstrate a promising potential of covalently linked NLO dimers with intermediate open-shell/ionic characters as a new building block of highly efficient NLO systems.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate that the dimerization behavior of amine-substituted dicyanomethyl radicals can be switched from σ- to π-dimerization simply by varying the electron-donating substituents. For dicyanomethyl radicals with a 4,4'-ditolylamine (DT. ) or a phenothiazine (PT. ) substituent, the monomeric radical form and the corresponding dimer connected by a reversible C-C bond (σ-dimer) are in equilibrium in solution. On the other hand, the radical with the julolidine skeleton (JD. ) does not undergo σ-dimerization and was isolated as a stable radical in spite of the absence of bulky protecting groups. X-ray single-crystal analysis revealed that JD. forms the π-dimer in the crystalline state, and variable-temperature spectroscopy showed that JD. is in equilibrium with the π-dimer in toluene solution. DFT calculations point to the importance of electrostatic interactions as a driving force for the π-dimerization of JD. because of its polarized structure.

Abstract
The radical-mediated transition metal-free approach for the direct C-H bond functionalization of arenes is considered as a cost effective alternative to transition metal-based catalysis. An organic ligand-based radical plays a key role by generating an aryl radical which undergoes a subsequent functionalization process. The design principle of the present study takes advantage of a relatively stable odd alternant hydrocarbon-based phenalenyl (PLY) radical. In this study, the first transition metal-free catalyzed direct C-H arylation of a variety of heteroarenes such as azoles, furan, thiophene and pyridine at room temperature has been reported using a phenalenyl-based radical without employing any photoactivation step. This protocol has been successfully applied to the gram scale synthesis of core moieties of bioactive molecules. The phenalenyl-based radical initiator has been characterized crystallographically by trapping it via the formation of a C-C σ-bond between the phenalenyl radical and solvent-based radical species.

Abstract
The odd alternant hydrocarbon phenalenyl (PLY) can exist in three different forms, a closed-shell cation, an open-shell radical, and a closed-shell anion, using its nonbonding molecular orbital (NBMO). The chemistry of PLY-based molecules began more than five decades ago, and so far, the progress has mainly involved the open-shell neutral radical state. Over the last two decades, we have witnessed the evolution of a range of PLY-based radicals generating an array of multifunctional materials. However, it has been admitted that the practical applications of PLY radicals are greatly challenged by the low stability of the open-shell (radical) state. Recently, we took a different route to establish the utility of these PLY molecules using the closed-shell cationic state. In such a design, the closed-shell unit of PLY can readily accept free electrons, stabilizing in its NBMO upon generation of the open-shell state of the molecule. Thus, one can synthetically avoid the unstable open-shell state but still take advantage of this state by in situ generating the radical through external electron transfer or spin injection into the empty NBMO. It is worth noting that such approaches using closed-shell phenalenyl have been missing in the literature. This Account focuses on our recent developments using the closed-shell cationic state of the PLY molecule and its application in broad multidisciplinary areas spanning from catalysis to spin electronics. We describe how this concept has been utilized to develop a variety of homogeneous catalysts. For example, this concept was used in designing an iron(III) PLY-based electrocatalyst for a single-compartment H2O2 fuel cell, which delivered the best electrocatalytic activity among previously reported iron complexes, organometallic catalysts for various homogeneous organic transformations (hydroamination and polymerization), an organic Lewis acid catalyst for the ring opening of epoxides, and transition-metal-free C-H functionalization catalysts. Moreover, this concept of using the empty NBMO present in the closed-shell cationic state of the PLY moiety to capture electron(s) was further extended to an entirely different area of spin electronics to design a PLY-based spin-memory device, which worked by a spin-filtration mechanism using an organozinc compound based on a PLY backbone deposited over a ferromagnetic substrate. In this Account, we summarize our recent efforts to understand how this unexplored closed-shell state of the phenalenyl molecule, which has been known for over five decades, can be utilized in devising an array of materials that not only are important from an organometallic chemistry or organic chemistry point of view but also provide new understanding for device physics.

Abstract
We report the first synthesis of a covalent expanded isophlorin dimer from two 24-π doubly S-confused sapphyrin-like pentathiaisophlorins. It exhibits marginal peripheral aromaticity rather than strong global diatropicity or paratropicity and weak intermacrocycle electronic communication. Quantum chemical methods discern that cross-conjugation is responsible for these unusual electronic features.
