Abstract
What do experimentally measured kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) tell us about H-abstraction reactions with multispin-state reactivity options? Using DFT calculations with tunneling corrections for experimentally studied H-abstraction reactions of porphyrin-Compound II species (Chem.-Eur. J. 2014, 20, 14437; Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 7321) with cyclohexane, dihydroanthracene (DHA), and xanthene (Xan), we show here that KIE is a selective probe that identifies the experimentally reactive spin state. At the same time, comparison of calculated and experimental KIE values permits us to determine the structural orientation of the transition states, as well as the presence/absence of an axial ligand, and the effect of porphyrin substituents. The studied compound II (Cpd II) species involve porphine, and porphyrin ligands with different meso-substituents, TPFPP (tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin dianion) and TMP (tetramesitylporphyrin dianion), with and without imidazole axial ligands. The DFT calculations reveal three potential pathways: quintet and triplet σ-pathways (5Hσ and 3Hσ) that possess linear transition state (TS) structures, and a triplet π -pathway (3Hπ) having a bent TS structure. Without an axial ligand, the 5Hσ pathways for these Cpd II complexes cross below the triplet states. The axial ligand raises the barriers for the quintet and triplet σ-pathways and quenches any chances for two-state reactivity, thus proceeding via the 3Hπ pathway. All of these pathways exhibit characteristic KIE values: very large for 3Hπ (48-200), small for 5Hσ (3-9), and intermediate for 3Hσ (23-51). The calculated KIEs for (TPFPP)FeIV═O without an axial ligand reveal that 3Hσ is the only pathway having a KIE that matches the experimental values, for the reactions with DHA and Xan (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 7321). Indeed, theory shows that tunneling significantly lowers the 3Hσ barrier rendering it the sole reactive state for the reaction. A prediction is made for the reactivity and KIE of (TMP)FeIV═O complex, and a comparison is made with the analogous nonheme complexes.

Abstract
Non-precious-metal-catalyzed reactions are of increasing importance in chemistry due to the outstanding ecological and economic properties of these metals. In the subfield of metal-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization reactions, recent years have shown an increasing number of publications dedicated to this topic. Nickel, cobalt, and last but not least iron, have started to enter a field which was long dominated by precious metals such as palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium. The present review article summarizes the development of iron-, nickel-, and cobalt-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions until the end of 2016, and discusses the scope and limitations of these transformations.

Abstract
Catalytic C-H bond activation, which was an elusive subject of chemical research until the 1990s, has now become a standard synthetic method for the formation of new C-C and C-heteroatom bonds. The synthetic potential of C-H activation was first described for ruthenium catalysis and is now widely exploited by the use of various precious metals. Driven by the increasing interest in chemical utilization of ubiquitous metals that are abundant and nontoxic, iron catalysis has become a rapidly growing area of research, and iron-catalyzed C-H activation has been most actively explored in recent years. In this review, we summarize the development of stoichiometric C-H activation, which has a long history, and catalytic C-H functionalization, which emerged about 10 years ago. We focus in this review on reactions that take place via reactive organoiron intermediates, and we excluded those that use iron as a Lewis acid or radical initiator. The contents of this review are categorized by the type of C-H bond cleaved and the type of bond formed thereafter, and it covers the reactions of simple substrates and substrates possessing a directing group that anchors the catalyst to the substrate, providing an overview of iron-mediated and iron-catalyzed C-H activation reported in the literature by October 2016.

Abstract
Ferrate(vi) is an efficient and environmentally friendly oxidant for the degradation of organic micropollutants. However, the related mechanism for the degradation is ambiguous and can hardly be elucidated empirically due to the rapid oxidation process and unstable intermediates for experimental trapping. Herein we performed density function theory (DFT) calculations to unveil the mechanism of ferrate(vi)-mediated degradation, taking sulfamethoxazole as a model compound. The results show that nucleophilic attack (rather than electrophilic attack) of HFeO4- on the isoxazole moiety of sulfamethoxazole initiates the subsequent degradations, and ferrate(vi) rather than the water molecule provides O atoms for the oxidation of the nitroso group and isoxazole moiety. Electron delocalization from the Fe atom to the isoxazole moiety is crucial for the ring-opening of isoxazole, and organometallic intermediates suggested previously are not the necessary ones in the oxidation of sulfamethoxazole by HFeO4-. Thus, this study has theoretically clarified the ferrate(vi) oxidation mechanisms for a representative sulfonamide, which were also partially corroborated by the intermediates and products observed in the previous experimental studies for phosphite and tryptophan. This study provides an exemplification on the application of quantum chemical calculations to clarify the degradation pathways of organic micropollutants, which is important for the prediction of degradation products needed in their engineering design.

Abstract
Catalytic transformation of ubiquitous C-H bonds into valuable C-N bonds offers an efficient synthetic approach to construct N-functionalized molecules. Over the last few decades, transition metal catalysis has been repeatedly proven to be a powerful tool for the direct conversion of cheap hydrocarbons to synthetically versatile amino-containing compounds. This Review comprehensively highlights recent advances in intra- and intermolecular C-H amination reactions utilizing late transition metal-based catalysts. Initial discovery, mechanistic study, and additional applications were categorized on the basis of the mechanistic scaffolds and types of reactions. Reactivity and selectivity of novel systems are discussed in three sections, with each being defined by a proposed working mode.

Abstract
We present the variable-pressure d-d luminescence spectra of crystalline bis-dimethyldithiocarbamate palladium(ii) and its deuterated analog. The energies and shifts of the band maxima provide evidence for intermolecular PdH-C interactions, with quantitative differences observed for the deuterated complex. Shifts show distinct interactions in three pressure ranges between 1 bar and 85 kbar.
