Abstract
More multipurpose and convenient demand driven by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and intelligent packaging require flexible power sources. A VO2(B)/graphene (VO2(B)/GN) core-shell composite was successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment with V2O5 and graphite. The as-obtained sample was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and XPS measurements. In addition, the electrochemical properties of VO2(B)/GN were tested. Due to its great electrochemical performance and mechanical properties, graphene could increase the electrochemical performance and strengthen the structural stability of the material at the same time. With increasing loading amount of GN, the specific capacitance of VO2(B)/GN increased correspondingly. With 20% GN loading, the initial discharge specific capacity could reach 197 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, and 160 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, which is better than that of pure rod-like VO2(B). The capacitance of the VO2(B)/GN (20%) composite electrode retains 95.49% after 1000 cycles, which is higher than that of a pure VO2(B) electrode (85.43%), indicating that the VO2(B)/GN composite possesses better cycling stability. Moreover, a symmetrical solid-state supercapacitor (SCs) using VO2(B)/GN(20%) as the anode was assembled. Four printed SCs were connected in series to light up a 1.5 V red LED. This demonstrates its potential application in intelligent packaging to trace food safety.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin, with a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior, is often used to encapsulate a widest range of guest molecules based on host-guest inclusion interactions. Graphene, an emerging nanobuilding material, exhibits great potential for numerous applications because of its superior characteristics. Herein, we synthesized a novel graphene/β-cyclodextrin-based supramolecular nanocontainer with excellent inhibitor encapsulating capacity and high impermeable properties. The benzotriazole (BTA)-loaded nanocontainers were then used to endow coating system with excellent passive and active anticorrosion performance. Local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) was performed to characterize the self-healing behavior of composite coatings. Results indicated that the protective capability of the scratched coatings can be recovered through BTA release from containers. Furthermore, the long-term corrosion resistance of container-based coating was largely improved as observed from EIS. The effective healing process involves two conditions: (1) the release of BTA from containers and formation of adsorption layers on exposed metal surfaces and (2) the impermeable graphene nanosheets greatly impeded the electrolyte penetration and corrosion extension around the scratch. This novel graphene/β-cyclodextrin-based nanocontainer endows polymer coating with efficient self-healing functionality and durable anticorrosion property.

Abstract
The mechanochemical covalent functionalization of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (CEINs) is reported. Unprotected sugars (mannose, galactose, β-cyclodextrin) and amino sugars (glucosamine and chitosan) were successfully conjugated to the surface of CEINs. The developed grinding-induced methods employ (i) the 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of nitrile oxides or azomethine ylides and (ii) amidation-type reactions with the inclusion of carboxyl-functionalized CEINs and amino sugars. All the developed mechanochemical processes are fast (reaction time 10 min) and result in high degrees of coverage (7.3-31.5 wt%). The presented functionalization routes also constitute easy to perform and environmentally improved protocols. Moreover, the use of toxic organic solvents is not required. A comprehensive study on the colloidal stability of the sugar-functionalized CEINs is also included in this work. The results of the turbidimetric analyses reveal that both grinding-induced formation of amide bonds and the cycloadditions of sugar moieties to the surface of CEINs result in the significant improvement of their colloidal stability. The highest stability of the aqueous dispersion was found for CEINs functionalized with β-cyclodextrin. The comparative studies between the classical wet approach and the grinding-induced functionalization of CEINs show that the herein developed environmentally improved method increases the colloidal stability three times. The crucial role of the mechanochemical approach in the covalent functionalization of CEINs and the improvement of their colloidal stability is discussed in this work.

Abstract
Reactions applying amidation- or esterification-type processes and diazonium salts chemistry constitute the most commonly applied synthetic approaches for the modification of graphene-family materials. This work presents a critical assessment of the amidation and esterification methodologies reported in the recent literature, as well as a discussion of the reactions that apply diazonium salts. Common misunderstandings from the reported covalent functionalization methods are discussed, and a direct link between the reaction mechanisms and the basic principles of organic chemistry is taken into special consideration.

Abstract
A platform for the simultaneous determination of Cd(ii) and Pb(ii) in aqueous solution has been applied based on an aluminum silicon carbide-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (Al4SiC4-RGO) modified bismuth film glassy carbon electrode (GCE) using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) for the first time. The Al4SiC4-RGO nanocomposite electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with the Al4SiC4 modified GCE and bare GCE, the electrochemical performance of the Al4SiC4-RGO nanocomposite electrode is obviously enhanced resulting from the synergistic effects of Al4SiC4, RGO and bismuth film. The chemical and electrochemical parameters that exert an influence on the deposition and stripping of metal ions, such as supporting electrolytes, pH values, concentrations of Bi3+, deposition potentials and deposition times, were carefully studied. Under optimal conditions, a linear relationship exists between the currents and the concentrations of Cd(ii) and Pb(ii) in the range of 50 to 2700 μg L-1. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 1.30 μg L-1 for Pb(ii) and 2.15 μg L-1 for Cd(ii). Compared with the related work reported in the literature, the analytical performance in this work has a lower determination limit and a wider detection linear range. In addition, this electrode also exhibits good stability and reproducibility. These results imply that the Al4SiC4-RGO nanocomposite might be a promising candidate for practical applications in the electrochemical detection of metal ions.

Abstract
The environmental risk from antibiotics is an issue of increasing concern. So, carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin-functionalized montmorillonite nanosheets were for the first time successfully synthesized through a cheap, environmentally friendly and scalable approach and confirmed by FTIR, XRD and TGA. FE-SEM investigation showed that the resulting functional material could be further self-assembled into dense supramolecular organoclay networks (D-networks). The antibacterial properties of the D-networks loaded with natural berberine hydrochloride (BBH) were investigated toward E. coli and S. aureus by using colony growth on agar plates, bacterial growth curves based on optical densities, and confocal and fluorescence microscopy. Our studies demonstrated that the BBH loaded D-network antibacterial activity was concentration dependent and significantly exceeded that of free BBH. FE-SEM observation confirmed that E. coli and S. aureus can directly contact the D-networks and confocal and fluorescence microscopy showed that free BBH was only very poorly internalized, while the BBH released from the BBH-loaded D-network could be internalized efficiently into bacterial cells, resulting in an increment of the intracellular BBH level compared with the free BBH group. Time-dependent antibacterial activity was observed and it was found that the BBH-loaded D-network dispersion at the BBH dosage of 600 μg mL-1 almost completely suppressed the growth of E. coli, leading to a viability loss of up to 98.45 ± 1.22%, while the BBH-loaded D-network dispersion at the BBH concentration of 250 μg mL-1 exhibited a growth inhibition of 97.81 ± 0.83% toward S. aureus over three days. Our results suggest that supramolecular organoclay networks, in the future, may function as promising antibacterial drug carrier systems to promote BBH delivery in E. coli and S. aureus, which can reduce the environmental risk of antibiotics.

Abstract
The introduction of cyclodextrin species to graphene-family materials (GFMs) constitutes an important area of research, especially in terms of the development of applied nanoscience. The chemistry of cyclodextrins is the so-called host-guest chemistry, which has impacted on many fields of research, including catalysis, electrochemistry and nanomedicine. Cyclodextrins are water-soluble and biocompatible supramolecules, and therefore they may introduce new interesting properties to GFMs and may enhance the physicochemical/biological features of native GFMs. The reported methods for the conjugation of cyclodextrins to GFMs utilize either covalent or non-covalent approaches. The recent progress in the applications of GFMs functionalized with cyclodextrins, with the respect to the chemistry and features of these conjugates, is discussed. Special consideration is also given to the recent developments in (i) nanomedicine, (ii) electrochemistry, (iii) adsorption and (iv) catalysis. Examples of these materials are discussed in this work, together with the future outlook on the impact of GFM-cyclodextrin conjugates in the development of applied nanoscience.

Abstract
In the present work, a noncovalent and eco-friendly approach was proposed to prepare a carbon-black/β-cyclodextrin (CB/β-CD) nanocomposite. CB/β-CD-nanocomposite-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes were applied for the simultaneous determination of the anticancer drug flutamide (Flut) and the environmental pollutant 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The electrochemical performance of the proposed sensor relied on the conductivity of CB, the different binding strengths of the guests (Flut and 4-NP) to the host (β-CD), and the different reduction potentials of the nitroaromatic compounds. Fascinatingly, the proposed sensor exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance with high sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility. The obtained wide linear ranges were 0.05-158.3 and 0.125-225.8 μM for Flut and 4-NP. The low detection limits of 0.016 and 0.040 μM with the higher sensitivities of 5.476 and 9.168 μA μM-1 cm-2 were achieved for the determination of Flut and 4-NP, respectively. The practical feasibility of the proposed sensor was studied in tap-water and human-serum samples.

Abstract
Mutual interference is a severe issue that occurs during the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions. This limitation presents a notable drawback for its high sensitivity to specific targets. Here, we present a high electrochemical sensitivity of ∼237.1 μA cm-2 μM-1 toward copper(II) [Cu(II)] based on oxygen-deficient titanium dioxide (TiO2- x) nanosheets. We fully demonstrated an atomic-level relationship between electrochemical behaviors and the key factors, including the high-energy (001) facet percentage, oxygen vacancy concentration, surface -OH content, and charge carrier density, is fully demonstrated. These four factors were quantified using Raman, electron spin resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, and Mott-Schottky plots. In the mutual interference investigation, we selected cadmium(II) [Cd(II)] as the target ion because of the significant difference in its stripping potential (∼700 mV). The results show that the Cd(II) can enhance the sensitivity of TiO2- x nanosheets toward Cu(II), exhibiting an electron-induced mutual interference effect, as demonstrated by X-ray absorption fine structure spectra.

Abstract
Although various analytical methods have been established based on quantum dots (QDs), most were conducted in solution, which is inadequate for storage/transportation and rapid analysis. Moreover, the potential environmental problems caused by abandoned QDs cannot be ignored. In this paper, a reusable xerogel containing CdTe with strong emission is established by introducing host–guest interactions between QDs and polymer matrix. This xerogel shows high QDs loading capacity without decrease or redshift in fluorescence (the maximum of loading is 50 wt % of the final xerogel), which benefits from the steric hindrance of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) molecules. Host–guest interactions immobilize QDs firmly, resulting in the excellent fluorescence retention of the xerogel. The good detecting performance and reusability mean this xerogel could be employed as a versatile analysis platform (for quantitative and qualitative analyses). In addition, the xerogel can be self-healed by the aid of water.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising material for biomedical applications, particularly in drug delivery, due to its exceptional chemical and physical properties. In this work, an innovative GO-based carrier was developed by modifying GO with chitosan (CHI) to improve the biocompatibility, and followed by the conjugation of hyaluronic acid (HA), the target ligand for CD44, to realize the specific recognition of tumor cells and improve the efficiency of anti-tumor drug delivery. The resulting product GO-CHI-HA was loaded with an anti-cancer drug SNX-2112, which is the Hsp90 inhibitor. The total release amount and release rate of SNX-2112 were significantly higher in acidic condition than in physiological condition. GO-CHI-HA with a low concentration had little impact on the lysis of red blood cells (RBCs) and blood coagulation and showed low toxicity in A549 cells and NHBE cells. The GO-CHI-HA/SNX-2112 proved to be effective in inhibiting and killing A549 cells while having lower cytotoxicity against normal human bronchial epithelial cells (NHBE cells). Furthermore, in vivo toxicity of the materials towards vital organs in SD rats were also studied through histological examinations and blood property analyses, the results of which showed that although inflammatory response was developed in the short-term, GO-CHI-HA/SNX-2112 caused no severe long-term injury. Therefore, this drug delivery system showed great potential as an effective and safe drug delivery system with little adverse side effects for cancer therapy.

Abstract
In the present study, thiol β-cyclodextrin (SH-CD) and ethylenediamine β-cyclodextrin (NH2-β-CD) were simultaneously grafted on the same interface of an Au NP deposited carboxyl SiC (Au@CSiC) nanocomposite. An electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of nitrophenol isomers (o-nitrophenol, o-NP; p-nitrophenol, p-NP) using SH-CD and NH2-β-CD functionalized Au@SiC (Au@CSiC-SH/NH2-CD) nanocomposite was successfully constructed. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to quantify o-NP and p-NP within the concentration range of 0.01-150 μM under the optimal conditions. The detection limit (S/N = 3) of the sensor was 0.019 and 0.023 μM for o-NP and p-NP, respectively, indicating a low detection limit. Interference study results demonstrated that the sensor was not affected in the presence of similar aromatic compounds during the determination of NP isomers, showing high selectivity. The proposed electrochemical sensing platform was successfully used to determine NP isomers in tap water. The low detection limit and high selectivity of the proposed electrochemical sensor were caused by the high surface area, the excellent conductivity, and the more recognized (enriched) NP isomer molecules by SH-β-CD and NH2-β-CD of the Au@CSiC-SH/NH2-CD nanocomposite.

Abstract
To achieve high selectivity and sensitivity simultaneously in an electrochemical biosensing platform, cucurbituril and azide cofunctionalized graphene oxide, a new functional nanomaterial that acts as a go-between to connect the recognition element with amplified signal architecture, is developed in this work. The cucurbituril and azide cofunctionalized graphene oxide features a high specific surface area with abundant levels of the two types of functional groups. Specifically, it emerges as a powerful tool to link recognition elements with simplicity, high yield, rapidity, and highly selective reactivity through azide-alkynyl click chemistry. Moreover, it possesses many host molecules to interact with guest molecules (also signal molecules)-grafted branched ethylene imine polymer, through which the detection sensitivity can be greatly improved. Together with electro-click technology, a highly controllable, selective, and sensitive biosensing platform can be easily created. For VEGF165 protein detection, the electro-click assay has high selectivity and sensitivity; a dynamic detection range from 10 fg mL-1 to 1 ng mL-1 with a detection limit of 8 fg mL-1 was achieved. The electro-click biosensing strategy based on cucurbituril and azide cofunctionalized graphene oxide would have great promise for other target analytes with a broad range of applications.

Abstract
The diseases attributable to viruses remain a global burden. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is considered as the major viral pathogen of the lower respiratory tract of infants, has been implicated in severe lung disease. In this contribution, we developed a β-cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) composite, which displayed excellent antiviral activity and could load curcumin efficiently. RSV, a negative-sense single-stranded enveloped RNA virus, was employed as a model virus to investigate the antiviral activity of multifunctional GO. Proved by the tissue culture infectious dose assay and immunofluorescence assay, the curcumin loaded functional GO was confirmed with highly efficient inhibition for RSV infection and great biocompatibility to the host cells. The results showed that the composite could prevent RSV from infecting the host cells by directly inactivating the virus and inhibiting the viral attachment, and possessed prophylactic and therapeutic effects towards the virus. Our data indicate that the composite may provide new insights into antiviral therapy for RSV infection.

Abstract
A novel enzyme-free electrochemical sensing strategy was proposed for sensitive monitoring of DNA and miRNA by smart combination of the cyclic cleavage reaction of Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme and the host-guest inclusion between ferrocene-labeled hairpin probe (H-1) and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin polymer (NRGO/β-CDP) nanocomposites. The synthesized NRGO/β-CDP nanocomposites with high electrocatalytic activity and recognition capability were modified on the glassy carbon electrode to construct the sensing platform. Upon the hybridization reaction of subunit DNA in the loop region with target sequence, the active DNAzyme was liberated from the caged structure, which bound with H-1 to catalyze its cleavage in the presence of Mg2+ and triggered the target recycling amplification for the cleavage of a large number of H-1. Each cleaved H-1 was divided into two single-stranded oligonucleotides, leading to an obvious enhancement of peak current by the molecular recognition of β-CDP on the electrode. Thus, the constructed biosensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity for DNA and miRNA assays, with wide concentration ranges of 0.01-1000 and 0.05-500 pM and low detection limits of 3.2 and 18 fM, respectively. This developed sensing strategy may become a promising nucleic acid detection method in bioassays and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
An α-α corner mimetic self-assembles to form a rod-like supramolecular structure which bends and closes end-to-end like a cyclization reaction to form uniform toroids. Each peptide fragment containing l-leucine, α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) and l-tyrosine forms rigid 310 helical structures stabilized by multiple intramolecular N-HO hydrogen bonds. Two 310 helices are connected by the spacer 3-aminomethyl-benzylamine and maintain an angular distance of 120° and therefore mimic the α-α corner motif of a protein super secondary structure. The individual α-α corner subunits are themselves regularly interlinked through multiple water mediated intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions to form the rod-like supramolecular structure and toroids. The formation of the supramolecular structure has been proven with X-ray crystallography and other spectroscopic techniques. The cyclization of the supramolecular structure and toroid formation were studied by optical microscope, AFM and FE-SEM experiments. Despite other assignments such as exfoliation of graphene from graphite, the compound exhibits significant memory to finally produce the toroids.

A rapid electrochemical monitoring platform for sensitive determination of thiamethoxam based on β-cyclodextrin-graphene composite. ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY 2017; 36:1991-1997. Abstract
A rapid monitoring platform for sensitive voltammetric detection of thiamethoxam residues is reported in the present study. A β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide composite was used as a reinforcing material in electrochemical determination of thiamethoxam. Compared with bare glassy carbon electrodes, the reduction peak currents of thiamethoxam at reduced graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode and β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode were increased by 70- and 124-fold, respectively. The experimental conditions influencing voltammetric determination of thiamethoxam, such as the amount of β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide, solution pH, temperature, and accumulation time, were optimized. The reduction mechanism and binding affinity of this material is also discussed. Under optimal conditions, the reduction peak currents increased linearly between 0.5 µM and 16 µM concentration of thiamethoxam. The limit of detection was 0.27 µM on the basis of a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. When the proposed method was applied to brown rice in a recovery test, the recoveries were between 92.20% and 113.75%. The results were in good concordance with the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The proposed method therefore provides a promising and effective platform for sensitive and rapid determination of thiamethoxam. Environ Toxicol Chem 2017;36:1991-1997. © 2017 SETAC.
