Abstract
We describe a systematic study of the scope and relationship between ligand structure and activity for a highly efficient and selective class of catalysts containing sterically hindered chelating alkylphosphines for the amination of heteroaryl and aryl chlorides, bromides, and iodides. In the presence of this catalyst, aryl and heteroaryl chlorides, bromides, and iodides react with many primary amines in high yields with part-per-million quantities of palladium precursor and ligand. Many reactions of primary amines with both heteroaryl and aryl chlorides, bromides, and iodides occur to completion with 0.0005-0.05 mol % catalyst. A comparison of the reactivity of this catalyst for the coupling of primary amines at these loadings is made with catalysts generated from hindered monophosphines and carbenes, and these data illustrate the benefits of chelation. Studies on structural variants of the most active catalyst indicate that a rigid backbone in the bidentate structure, strong electron donation, and severe hindrance all contribute to its high reactivity. Thus, these complexes constitute a fourth-generation catalyst for the amination of aryl halides, whose activity complements catalysts based on monophosphines and carbenes.

Abstract
A unique family of planar chiral symmetrical N-heterocyclic carbene precursors with restricted flexibility derived from [2.2]paracyclopane were obtained by a new synthetic route. The resolution of 4-amino-13-bromo[2.2]paracyclophane was achieved with relatively high efficiency. Starting from (4 S p,13 R p)-4-amino-13-bromo[2.2]paracyclophane, the planar chiral pseudogem-disubstituted [2.2]paracyclophanyl dihydroimidazoliums were prepared in a four-step sequence with good yields. The resulting dihydroimidazolium salts were fully characterized with a series of methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique.

Abstract
We have developed the first N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based transition metal catalysts for C-S coupling reactions. Ni-NHC catalysts showed good to excellent activities toward various aryl halides in C-S coupling reactions. The catalytic activities were greatly affected by the electronic and steric properties of the NHC ligands. The new catalysts were inexpensive, easy to synthesize, and environmentally friendly. They could be excellent candidates to replace Pd-organophosphanes for C-S coupling catalysis.

Abstract
A series of 2-dialkylphosphino-2'-alkoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl ligands (6a-c and 8a-c) have been prepared conveniently by a lithium-initiated ring-opening reaction of dinaphthofuran, followed by selective phosphorylation. These compounds displayed a remarkable air and moisture stability, both in solid form and in solution. Application of these phosphine ligands in palladium-catalyzed C-N bond forming reactions revealed the crucial roles of the steric bulk of the substituents on the phosphorus atom governing the catalytic activity. Specifically, 2-di-tert-butylphosphino-2'-isopropoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (8b) proved to be the most effective for the aminations of aryl halides with primary amines, while the less bulky 2-dicyclohexyl-2'-methoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (6a) was more effective for the aminations with secondary amines. The steric and electronic effects of the ligands were analyzed to account for these observations.

Abstract
The use of second-generation [(NHC)Pd(R-allyl)Cl] complexes for Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling reactions involving heteroaromatic halides at room temperature is reported. The first examples of room temperature Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of deactivated aryl chlorides with alkenyl boronic acids are also disclosed. Terminal substitution at the allyl moiety of the palladium complex facilitates its activation at room temperature leading to very active catalytic species enabling the present catalytic transformations to be performed rapidly using very mild reaction conditions. Catalyst loadings can be as low as 10 ppm for the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination and 50 ppm for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed C-C and C-N bond-forming reactions are among the most versatile and powerful synthetic methods. For the last 15 years, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have enjoyed increasing popularity as ligands in Pd-mediated cross-coupling and related transformations because of their superior performance compared to the more traditional tertiary phosphanes. The strong sigma-electron-donating ability of NHCs renders oxidative insertion even in challenging substrates facile, while their steric bulk and particular topology is responsible for fast reductive elimination. The strong Pd-NHC bonds contribute to the high stability of the active species, even at low ligand/Pd ratios and high temperatures. With a number of commercially available, stable, user-friendly, and powerful NHC-Pd precatalysts, the goal of a universal cross-coupling catalyst is within reach. This Review discusses the basics of Pd-NHC chemistry to understand the peculiarities of these catalysts and then gives a critical discussion on their application in C-C and C-N cross-coupling as well as carbopalladation reactions.

Abstract
1-Methyl-3-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)imidazolium chloride, [TMSPIM][Cl-], was synthesized as a precursor of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), which can be coordinated with palladium to give an organosilane-based bidentic NHC-Pd complex. The organosilane-based NHC-Pd complex was immobilized covalently on silica particles (NHC-Pd/silica) and then characterized by field emission/scanning electron microscopy (FE/SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS), and inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES). The Suzuki reaction was performed as a model reaction to examine the catalytic activity of NHC-Pd/silica. NHC-Pd/silica exhibited excellent performance in the Suzuki reaction of various aryl halide derivatives (except for aryl chloride derivatives) with phenylboronic acid under mild conditions (room temperature and short reaction time). Moreover, the catalyst was recycled several times without any significant loss of catalytic activity in the Suzuki reaction.

Abstract
We report a detailed study of the effects of anions on the rates of the amination of aryl halides catalyzed by palladium complexes of the hindered alkylmonophosphine PtBu3. These reactions occur by turnover-limiting oxidative addition. The extent of the dependence of the rates on the concentration and identity of bases was found to depend on the electronic properties of the haloarenes. The rates of reactions of electron-rich and electron-neutral chloroarenes were independent of the concentration of the bulky alkoxide base OCEt3-, but they were dependent on the concentrations of the less hindered OtBu- and the softer 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxide bases. The reactions were fastest when 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxide was used as base and slowest when NaOCEt3 was used as base. A concurrent reaction pathway involving simultaneous oxidative addition of chloroarenes to [Pd(PtBu3)] and [(PtBu3)Pd(OR)]- may explain the dependence of the rates of reactions of electron-rich and electron-neutral chloroarenes on the identity and concentration of bases. The rates of reactions of electron-poor chloroarenes and the reactions of bromoarenes were independent of the concentration of OCEt3-, OtBu-, or 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxide bases but were dependent on the identity of bases, even though an adduct of the base did not accumulate in any observable amounts. Further, long induction periods were observed for the reactions of electron-poor chloroarenes. These long induction periods suggest that the complex kinetic behavior could result from the generation of several catalytically active species.

Abstract
A mild, palladium-catalyzed coupling of aryl halides with ammonia or lithium amide to form primary arylamines as the major product is described. These reactions occurred with excellent selectivity for formation of the primary arylamine over formation of the diarylamine (9.5:1 to over 50:1 ratios of arylamine to diarylamine). In addition, the first organopalladium complex with a terminal -NH2 ligand has been isolated. This complex reductively eliminates to form arylamines.

Abstract
The synthesis of NHC-PdCl(2)-3-chloropyridine (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes from readily available starting materials in air is described. The 2,6-diisopropylphenyl derivative was found to be highly catalytically active in alkyl-alkyl Suzuki and Negishi cross-coupling reactions. The synthesis, ease-of-use, and activity of this complex are substantial improvements over in situ catalyst generation and all current Pd-NHC complexes. The utilization of complex 4 led to the development of a reliable, easily employed Suzuki-Miyama protocol. Employing various reaction conditions allowed a large array of hindered biaryl and drug-like heteroaromatic compounds to be synthesized without difficulty.
