Attosecond control of electronic processes by intense light fields

Electron-Nuclear Coupling through Autoionizing States after Strong-Field Excitation of H_{2} Molecules

Channel-selective electron emission from strong-field photoionization of H_{2} molecules is experimentally investigated by using ultrashort laser pulses and a reaction microscope. The electron momenta and energy spectra in coincidence with bound and dissociative ionization channels are compared. Surprisingly, we observed an enhancement of the photoelectron yield in the low-energy region for the bound ionization channel. By further investigation of asymmetrical electron emission using two-color laser pulses, this enhancement is understood as the population of the autoionizing states of H_{2} molecules in which vibrational energy is transferred to electronic energy. This general mechanism provides access to the vibrational-state distribution of molecular ions produced in a strong-field interaction.

Attosecond physics at the nanoscale

Recently two emerging areas of research, attosecond and nanoscale physics, have started to come together. Attosecond physics deals with phenomena occurring when ultrashort laser pulses, with duration on the femto- and sub-femtosecond time scales, interact with atoms, molecules or solids. The laser-induced electron dynamics occurs natively on a timescale down to a few hundred or even tens of attoseconds (1 attosecond  =  1 as  =  10^-18 s), which is comparable with the optical field. For comparison, the revolution of an electron on a 1s orbital of a hydrogen atom is  ∼152 as. On the other hand, the second branch involves the manipulation and engineering of mesoscopic systems, such as solids, metals and dielectrics, with nanometric precision. Although nano-engineering is a vast and well-established research field on its own, the merger with intense laser physics is relatively recent. In this report on progress we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical overview of physics that takes place when short and intense laser pulses interact with nanosystems, such as metallic and dielectric nanostructures. In particular we elucidate how the spatially inhomogeneous laser induced fields at a nanometer scale modify the laser-driven electron dynamics. Consequently, this has important impact on pivotal processes such as above-threshold ionization and high-order harmonic generation. The deep understanding of the coupled dynamics between these spatially inhomogeneous fields and matter configures a promising way to new avenues of research and applications. Thanks to the maturity that attosecond physics has reached, together with the tremendous advance in material engineering and manipulation techniques, the age of atto-nanophysics has begun, but it is in the initial stage. We present thus some of the open questions, challenges and prospects for experimental confirmation of theoretical predictions, as well as experiments aimed at characterizing the induced fields and the unique electron dynamics initiated by them with high temporal and spatial resolution.

Symmetry-controlled time structure of high-harmonic carrier fields from a solid

High-harmonic (HH) generation in crystalline solids1-6 marks an exciting development, with potential applications in high-efficiency attosecond sources7, all-optical bandstructure reconstruction8,9, and quasiparticle collisions10,11. Although the spectral1-4 and temporal shape5 of the HH intensity has been described microscopically1-6,12, the properties of the underlying HH carrier wave have remained elusive. Here we analyse the train of HH waveforms generated in a crystalline solid by consecutive half cycles of the same driving pulse. Extending the concept of frequency combs13-15 to optical clock rates, we show how the polarization and carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of HH pulses can be controlled by crystal symmetry. For some crystal directions, we can separate two orthogonally polarized HH combs mutually offset by the driving frequency to form a comb of even and odd harmonic orders. The corresponding CEP of successive pulses is constant or offset by π, depending on the polarization. In the context of a quantum description of solids, we identify novel capabilities for polarization- and phase-shaping of HH waveforms that cannot be accessed with gaseous sources.

Frequency domain tailoring for intra-pulse frequency mixing

Generating mid infrared (MIR) pulses by difference frequency generation (DFG) is often a trade-off between the maximum stability given by all-inline intra-pulse arrangements and the independent control of pulse parameters with inter-pulse pump-probe like scenarios. We propose a coalescence between both opposing approaches by realizing an all-inline inter-pulse DFG scheme employing a 4-f setup. This allows independent manipulation of the amplitude, delay and polarization of the two corresponding spectral side bands of a supercontinuum source while maintaining 20 attoseconds jitter without any feedback stabilization. After filamentation in air, the broadened Ti:Sa spectrum is tailored in a 4-f setup to generate tunable MIR pulses. In this manner, 2 µm, 4.8 µJ, 26.5 fs and carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilized pulses are generated in a single DFG stage.

The optical frequency comb fibre spectrometer

Optical frequency comb sources provide thousands of precise and accurate optical lines in a single device enabling the broadband and high-speed detection required in many applications. A main challenge is to parallelize the detection over the widest possible band while bringing the resolution to the single comb-line level. Here we propose a solution based on the combination of a frequency comb source and a fibre spectrometer, exploiting all-fibre technology. Our system allows for simultaneous measurement of 500 isolated comb lines over a span of 0.12 THz in a single acquisition; arbitrarily larger span are demonstrated (3,500 comb lines over 0.85 THz) by doing sequential acquisitions. The potential for precision measurements is proved by spectroscopy of acetylene at 1.53 μm. Being based on all-fibre technology, our system is inherently low-cost, lightweight and may lead to the development of a new class of broadband high-resolution spectrometers.

An ideal optical frequency-comb system should combine both single-line spectral resolution and a bandwidth broad enough to cover as many lines as possible. Here, the authors incorporate a fibre spectrometer to detect approximately 500 comb-lines with an instrument resolution of 120 megahertz.

The interaction of excited atoms and few-cycle laser pulses

This work describes the first observations of the ionisation of neon in a metastable atomic state utilising a strong-field, few-cycle light pulse. We compare the observations to theoretical predictions based on the Ammosov-Delone-Krainov (ADK) theory and a solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). The TDSE provides better agreement with the experimental data than the ADK theory. We optically pump the target atomic species and measure the ionisation rate as the a function of different steady-state populations in the fine structure of the target state which shows significant ionisation rate dependence on populations of spin-polarised states. The physical mechanism for this effect is unknown.

Sub-10-fs control of dissociation pathways in the hydrogen molecular ion with a few-pulse attosecond pulse train

The control of the electronic states of a hydrogen molecular ion by photoexcitation is considerably difficult because it requires multiple sub-10 fs light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) wavelength region with a sufficiently high intensity. Here, we demonstrate the control of the dissociation pathway originating from the 2pσu electronic state against that originating from the 2pπu electronic state in a hydrogen molecular ion by using a pair of attosecond pulse trains in the XUV wavelength region with a train-envelope duration of ∼4 fs. The switching time from the peak to the valley in the oscillation caused by the vibrational wavepacket motion in the 1sσg ground electronic state is only 8 fs. This result can be classified as the fastest control, to the best of our knowledge, of a molecular reaction in the simplest molecule on the basis of the XUV-pump and XUV-probe scheme.

Attosecond photoelectron streaking with enhanced energy resolution for small-bandgap materials

Attosecond photoelectron streaking spectroscopy allows time-resolved electron dynamics with a temporal resolution approaching the atomic unit of time. Studies have been performed in numerous systems, including atoms, molecules, and surfaces, and the quest for ever higher temporal resolution called for ever wider spectral extent of the attosecond pulses. For typical experiments relying on attosecond pulses with a duration of 200 as, the time-bandwidth limitation for a Gaussian pulse implies a minimal spectral bandwidth larger than 9 eV translating to a corresponding spread of the detected photoelectron kinetic energies. Here, by utilizing a specially tailored narrowband reflective XUV multilayer mirror, we explore experimentally the minimal spectral width compatible with attosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy while obtaining the highest possible spectral resolution. The validity of the concept is proven by recording attosecond electron streaking traces from the direct semiconductor gallium arsenide (GaAs), with a nominal bandgap of 1.42 eV at room temperature, proving the potential of the approach for tracking charge dynamics also in these technologically highly relevant materials that previously have been inaccessible to attosecond science.

Frequency modulation of high-order harmonic generation in an orthogonally polarized two-color laser field

We have experimentally investigated the frequency modulation of high-order harmonics in an orthogonally polarized two-color laser field consisting of a mid-infrared 1800nm fundamental pulse and its second harmonic pulse. It is demonstrated that the high harmonic spectra can be fine-tuned as we slightly change the relative delay of the two-color laser pulses. By analyzing the relative frequency shift of each harmonic at different two-color delays, the nonadiabatic spectral shift induced by the rapid variation of the intensity-dependent intrinsic dipole phase can be distinguished from the blueshift induced by the change of the refractive index during self-phase modulation (SPM). Our comprehensive analysis shows that the frequency modulation pattern is a reflection of the average emission time of high-order harmonic generation (HHG), thus offering a simple method to fine-tune the spectra of the harmonics on a sub-cycle time scale.

Carrier-Envelope-Phase Characterization for an Isolated Attosecond Pulse by Angular Streaking

The carrier envelope phase (CEP) is a crucial parameter for a few-cycle laser pulse since it substantially determines the laser waveform. Stepping forward from infrared to extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pulses, we propose a strategy to directly characterize the CEP of an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) by numerically simulating the tunneling ionization of a hydrogen atom in a combined IAP and phase-stabilized circularly polarized IR laser pulse. The fine modulations of the combined laser fields, due to the variation of the CEP of the IAP, are exponentially enlarged onto the distinct time-dependent tunneling ionization rate. Electrons released at different time with distinct tunneling ionization rates are angularly streaked to different directions. By measuring the resulting photoelectron momentum distribution, the CEP of the IAP can be retrieved. The characterization of the CEP of an IAP will open the possibility of capturing sub-EUV-cycle dynamics.

Quantum Nuclear Dynamics Pumped and Probed by Ultrafast Polarization Controlled Steering of a Coherent Electronic State in LiH

The quantum wave packet dynamics following a coherent electronic excitation of LiH by an ultrashort, polarized, strong one-cycle infrared optical pulse is computed on several electronic states using a grid method. The coupling to the strong field of the pump and the probe pulses is included in the Hamiltonian used to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The polarization of the pump pulse allows us to control the localization in time and in space of the nonequilibrium coherent electronic motion and the subsequent nuclear dynamics. We show that transient absorption, resulting from the interaction of the total molecular dipole with the electric fields of the pump and the probe, is a very versatile probe of the different time scales of the vibronic dynamics. It allows probing both the ultrashort, femtosecond time scale of the electronic coherences as well as the longer dozens of femtoseconds time scales of the nuclear motion on the excited electronic states. The ultrafast beatings of the electronic coherences in space and in time are shown to be modulated by the different periods of the nuclear motion.

Steering Proton Migration in Hydrocarbons Using Intense Few-Cycle Laser Fields

Proton migration is a ubiquitous process in chemical reactions related to biology, combustion, and catalysis. Thus, the ability to manipulate the movement of nuclei with tailored light within a hydrocarbon molecule holds promise for far-reaching applications. Here, we demonstrate the steering of hydrogen migration in simple hydrocarbons, namely, acetylene and allene, using waveform-controlled, few-cycle laser pulses. The rearrangement dynamics is monitored using coincident 3D momentum imaging spectroscopy and described with a widely applicable quantum-dynamical model. Our observations reveal that the underlying control mechanism is due to the manipulation of the phases in a vibrational wave packet by the intense off-resonant laser field.

0.5-keV Soft X-ray attosecond continua

Attosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet have drawn a great deal of attention due to their ability to interrogate electronic dynamics in real time. Nevertheless, to follow charge dynamics and excitations in materials, element selectivity is a prerequisite, which demands such pulses in the soft X-ray region, above 200 eV, to simultaneously cover several fundamental absorption edges of the constituents of the materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the exploitation of a transient phase matching regime to generate carrier envelope controlled soft X-ray supercontinua with pulse energies up to 2.9±0.1 pJ and a flux of (7.3±0.1) × 10⁷ photons per second across the entire water window and attosecond pulses with 13 as transform limit. Our results herald attosecond science at the fundamental absorption edges of matter by bridging the gap between ultrafast temporal resolution and element specific probing.

Attosecond soft X-ray pulses hold promise for probing electronic dynamics in real time, but it is challenging to achieve element sensitivity while maintaining temporal resolution. Teichmann et al. report the cover of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen absorption edges with an isolated pulse supporting 13 as duration.

Strong Field Molecular Ionization in the Impulsive Limit: Freezing Vibrations with Short Pulses

We study strong-field molecular ionization as a function of pulse duration. Experimental measurements of the photoelectron yield for a number of molecules reveal competition between different ionization continua (cationic states) which depends strongly on pulse duration. Surprisingly, in the limit of short pulse duration, we find that a single ionic continuum dominates the yield, whereas multiple continua are produced for longer pulses. Using calculations which take vibrational dynamics into account, we interpret our results in terms of nuclear motion and nonadiabatic dynamics during the ionization process.

Frequency-noise measurements of optical frequency combs by multiple fringe-side discriminator

The frequency noise of an optical frequency comb is routinely measured through the hetherodyne beat of one comb tooth against a stable continuous-wave laser. After frequency-to-voltage conversion, the beatnote is sent to a spectrum analyzer to retrive the power spectral density of the frequency noise. Because narrow-linewidth continuous-wave lasers are available only at certain wavelengths, heterodyning the comb tooth can be challenging. We present a new technique for direct characterization of the frequency noise of an optical frequency comb, requiring no supplementary reference lasers and easily applicable in all spectral regions from the terahertz to the ultraviolet. The technique is based on the combination of a low finesse Fabry-Perot resonator and the so-called “fringe-side locking” method, usually adopted to characterize the spectral purity of single-frequency lasers, here generalized to optical frequency combs. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated with an Er-fiber comb source across the wavelength range from 1 to 2 μm.

Carrier-envelope-phase insensitivity in high-order harmonic generation driven by few-cycle laser pulses

We present evidence for self-stabilization of the relative spectral phase of high-order harmonic emission against intensity variations of the driving field. Our results demonstrate that, near the laser focus, phase matching of the harmonic field from a macroscopic target can compensate for the intensity dependence of the intrinsic phase of the harmonics emitted by a single radiator. As a consequence, we show experimentally and theoretically the insensitivity of the harmonic spectra produced at the laser focus against variations of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a sub-two-cycle driving field. In addition, the associated attosecond pulse trains exhibit phase locking against CEP changes of the few-cycle driver.

Static polarization of the supramolecular dyads of fullerene C60 with porphyrin derivatives

The nonlinear optical properties of four supramolecular dyads consisting of fullerene C 60 non-covalently bonded to porphyrin, porphyrazine, tetrabenzoporphyrin and phthalocyanine were investigated by calculating their electronic polarizability and first- and second-order hyperpolarizabilities using the finite field method and the density functional theory with the Grimme dispersion correction. Large first- and second-order hyperpolarizabilities result in nonlinear dependence of the polarization of dyads on the strength of external electric field. The increase in the size of the π-conjugated electron system of the porphyrin analogs leads to the increase of the polarizability and first- and second-order hyperpolarizabilities of the dyads. The absence of the covalent bonds between the components of the dyads prevents the field-induced electron transfer from porphyrin analogs to fullerene. The main reason for the nonlinear behavior of the polarization of dyads is the mutual polarization of fullerene and porphyrin analogs amplified by the external electric field.

Accurate determination of absolute carrier-envelope phase dependence using photo-ionization

The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) dependence of few-cycle above-threshold ionization (ATI) of Xe is calibrated for use as a reference measurement for determining and controlling the absolute CEP in other interactions. This is achieved by referencing the CEP-dependent ATI measurements of Xe to measurements of atomic H, which are in turn referenced to ab initio calculations for atomic H. This allows for the accurate determination of the absolute CEP dependence of Xe ATI, which enables relatively easy determination of the offset between the relative CEP measured and/or controlled by typical devices and the absolute CEP in the interaction.

Chromium/scandium multilayer mirrors for isolated attosecond pulses at 145 eV

Recent advances in the development of attosecond soft x-ray sources toward photon wavelengths below 10 nm are also driving the development of suited broadband multilayer optics for steering and shaping attosecond pulses. We demonstrate that current attosecond experiments in the sub-200-eV range benefit from these improved optics. We present our achievements in utilizing ion-beam-deposited chromium/scandium (Cr/Sc) multilayer mirrors, optimized by tailored material dependent deposition and interface polishing, for the generation of single attosecond pulses from a high-harmonic cut-off spectrum at a central energy of 145 eV. Isolated attosecond pulses have been measured by soft x-ray-pump/NIR-probe electron streaking experiments and characterized using frequency-resolved optical gating for complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts (FROG/CRAB). The results demonstrate that Cr/Sc multilayer mirrors can be used as efficient attosecond optics for reflecting 600-attosecond pulses at a photon energy of 145 eV, which is a prerequisite for present and future attosecond experiments in this energy range.

Carrier-envelope phase-dependent high harmonic generation in the water window using few-cycle infrared pulses

High harmonic generation (HHG) using waveform-controlled, few-cycle pulses from Ti:sapphire lasers has opened emerging researches in strong-field and attosecond physics. However, the maximum photon energy of attosecond pulses via HHG remains limited to the extreme ultraviolet region. Long-wavelength light sources with carrier-envelope phase stabilization are promising to extend the photon energy of attosecond pulses into the soft X-ray region. Here we demonstrate carrier-envelope phase-dependent HHG in the water window using sub-two-cycle optical pulses at 1,600 nm. Experimental and simulated results indicate the confinement of soft X-ray emission in a single recombination event with a bandwidth of 75 eV around the carbon K edge. Control of high harmonics by the waveform of few-cycle infrared pulses is a key milestone to generate soft X-ray attosecond pulses. We measure a dependence of half-cycle bursts on the gas pressure, which indicates subcycle deformation of the waveform of the infrared drive pulses in the HHG process.

The higher-harmonic generation of laser pulses is used to achieve short-wavelength attosecond pulses for ultrashort experiments, but has been limited in the achievable energy. Here, Ishii et al. develop a scheme to break this barrier and to achieve photon energies higher than the carbon K edge of about 284 eV.

Control of spectral interference patterns in broad Rabi sidebands toward quasi-comb structures

The pattern of spectral interference fringes in broad dynamic Rabi sidebands allows for a considerable degree of control by shaping the picosecond driving pulse. We demonstrate experimental evidence of such control and report an analytic and numerical investigation of possibilities to control the fringe pattern to produce a comb-like optical structure. The temporal phase and amplitude shaping of a picosecond driving pulse influence the spectrum envelope, fringe contrast, and fringe spacing variation in the sideband spectra. The sideband spectrum envelope depends on the sharpness of the driving pulse, that is, on the rate at which the temporal distance between the leading and trailing edges grows away from the pulse maximum. Increasing this parameter reduces the variation of the envelope amplitude across the sideband. The fringe contrast, defined by the maximum-to-minimum difference, depends strongly on the asymmetry of the driving pulse. The imbalance between the leading and trailing edges leads to a decrease of the contrast. The variation of interpeak distance within a sideband was controlled using the temporal shape of the driving pulse. In the particular case of a blue-shifted sideband emitted by excited oxygen atoms driven by a picosecond pulse of 800 nm carrier wavelength and ∼5×10¹⁰ W cm⁻² intensity, a Gaussian pulse shape results in an interpeak distance increasing almost five times over the interval from 1.60 to 1.66 eV, whereas a super-Gaussian shape leads to almost equidistant fringes producing a comb-like spectrum.

Enhanced attosecond bursts of relativistic high-order harmonics driven by two-color fields

We study the generation of attosecond x-ray and ultraviolet pulses from relativistically driven overdense plasma targets with two-color incident light. Particle-in-cell simulations show that significant improvement in pulse intensity and isolation is achievable with appropriate laser and plasma parameters. Conversion of 5% of incident laser energy to its second harmonic can enhance the intensity of generated attosecond pulses by an order of magnitude. This approach allows the generation of higher attosecond pulse intensities with existing experimental laser technology and offers a powerful tool for the analysis of the dynamics of relativistic laser-plasma interaction.

Electron acceleration and kinetic energy tailoring via ultrafast terahertz fields

We propose a mechanism for tuning the kinetic energy of surface plasmon generated electron pulses through control of the time delay between a pair of externally applied terahertz pulses. Varying the time delay results in translation, compression, and broadening of the kinetic energy spectrum of the generated electron pulse. We also observe that the electrons' kinetic energy dependence on the carrier envelope phase of the surface plasmon is preserved under the influence of a terahertz electric field.

Proposal for carrier-envelope-phase stable single-cycle attosecond pulse generation in the extreme-ultraviolet range

A robust method for producing half-cycle-few-cycle attosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range is proposed. It is based on coherent undulator radiation of relativistic ultrathin electron layers (nanobunches), which are produced by nanobunching of ultrashort electron bunches by a 10-TW power laser in a modulator undulator. Our numerical calculations predict the generation of nanobunches shorter than 10 nm. By using these electron nanobunches the production of carrier-envelope-phase stable attosecond pulses with up to a few tens of nJ energy and down to 10 nm wavelength and 35 as duration is predicted.

Carrier-envelope phase effects on the spatial coherence of high-order harmonics

In this work, we report the Carrier-Envelope Phase Effects on the Spatial Coherence of High-order Harmonics driven by phase-stabilized few-cycle mid-infrared laser pulses. The degree of coherence varies with carrier-envelope phase periodically with a period of π. At the same time, as the harmonic orders increase, the extreme points on the curve of coherence degree vs. carrier-envelope phase shift toward the direction of carrier-envelope phase increasing. Through theoretical analysis, we find that the ionization induced frequency chirp plays an important role in the Carrier-Envelope Phase Effects on the Spatial Coherence. This effect suggests a possible method to optimize the spatial coherence of harmonics by tuning the carrier-envelope phase of the driving field.

Short pulse carrier-envelope phase absolute single-shot measurement by photoionization of gases with a guided laser beam

We present an all optical approach to measure the value of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a short intense laser pulse. This method relies on photo-ionization of gases with a guided laser beam. This approach that provides the absolute value of the CEP, is compatible with single shot characterization, is scalable in wavelength, does not suffer from bandwidth limitation and is largely intensity independent. It has also the potential to provide a full characterization of the pulse profile via high order autocorrelation on a single shot basis.

Phase stabilization of a frequency comb using multipulse quantum interferometry

From the interaction between a frequency comb and an atomic qubit, we derive quantum protocols for the determination of the carrier-envelope offset phase, using the qubit coherence as a reference, and without the need of frequency doubling or an octave spanning comb. Compared with a trivial interference protocol, the multipulse protocol results in a polynomial enhancement of the sensitivity O(N-2) with the number N of laser pulses involved. We specialize the protocols using optical or hyperfine qubits, Λ schemes, and Raman transitions, and introduce methods where the reference is another phase-stable cw laser or frequency comb.

Energy-phase coupling inside sapphire-based f-2f nonlinear interferometers from 800 to 1940 nm

Energy-phase coupling inside f-2f nonlinear interferometers poses stringent limits on the tolerable pulse-to-pulse energy fluctuations of phase stable laser systems. Here we report a coupling coefficient of -220±20  mrad per 1% energy increase at 800 nm. We also report coefficients from +320 to +820  mrad per 1% energy increase in the 1140-1550 nm (signal) range. Finally, we report coefficients from -180 to +30  mrad per 1% energy variation in the 1636-1940 nm range.

Acoustic frequency combs for carrier-envelope phase stabilization

A method for improved performance of feed-forward carrier-envelope phase stabilization in amplified laser sources is presented and experimentally demonstrated. The phase stabilization scheme is applicable for a broad range of repetition rates spanning from subhertz to 100 kHz. The method relies on driving an acousto-optic frequency shifter by few-cycle transients. The phase of these transients suitably controls the grating phase of the generated index grating inside the shifter material. This approach removes beam pointing as well as amplitude noise issues observed in continuously driven feed-forward schemes. The synthesis of these gratings can be understood as the acoustic equivalent of mode-locking or acoustic frequency combs.

Complete analog control of the carrier-envelope-phase of a high-power laser amplifier

In this work we demonstrate the development of a complete analog feedback loop for the control of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a high-average power (20 W) laser operating at 10 kHz repetition rate. The proposed method combines a detection scheme working on a single-shot basis at the full-repetition-rate of the laser system with a fast actuator based either on an acousto-optic or on an electro-optic crystal. The feedback loop is used to correct the CEP fluctuations introduced by the amplification process demonstrating a CEP residual noise of 320 mrad measured on a single-shot basis. The comparison with a feedback loop operating at a lower sampling rate indicates an improvement up to 45% in the residual noise. The measurement of the CEP drift for different integration times clearly evidences the importance of the single-shot characterization of the residual CEP drift. The demonstrated scheme could be efficiently applied for systems approaching the 100 kHz repetition rate regime.

Zeptosecond high harmonic keV x-ray waveforms driven by midinfrared laser pulses

We demonstrate theoretically that the temporal structure of high harmonic x-ray pulses generated with midinfrared lasers differs substantially from those generated with near-infrared pulses, especially at high photon energies. In particular, we show that, although the total width of the x-ray bursts spans femtosecond time scales, the pulse exhibits a zeptosecond structure due to the interference of high harmonic emission from multiple reencounters of the electron wave packet with the ion. Properly filtered and without any compensation of the chirp, regular subattosecond keV waveforms can be produced.

Plasmon-enhanced-attosecond-extreme ultraviolet source

A compact high repetition rate attosecond light source based on a standard laser oscillator combined with plasmonic enhancement is analyzed. At repetition rates of tens of MHz, we predict focusable pulses with durations of ≲300 as and a spherical wave front at collimation angles ≲5°. Plasmonic mode and guiding of the attosecond radiation determine the beam parameters. The beam is robust with respect to variations of driver pulse focus and duration.

Multi-delay, phase coherent pulse pair generation for precision Ramsey-frequency comb spectroscopy

We demonstrate the generation of phase-stable mJ-pulse pairs at programmable inter-pulse delays up to hundreds of nanoseconds. A detailed investigation of potential sources for phase shifts during the parametric amplification of the selected pulses from a Ti:Sapphire frequency comb is presented, both numerically and experimentally. It is shown that within the statistical error of the phase measurement of 10 mrad, there is no dependence of the differential phase shift over the investigated inter-pulse delay range of more than 300 ns. In combination with nonlinear upconversion of the amplified pulses, the presented system will potentially enable short wavelength (<100 nm), multi-transition Ramsey-frequency comb spectroscopy at the kHz-level.

QUANTUM WAVE-PACKET EXPLORATION OF ISOLATED ULTRA-SHORT ATTOSECOND PULSE GENERATION BY A MODIFIED THREE-COLOR LASER FIELD SCHEME

By numerically solving the three dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we explore the high-order harmonic and attosecond pulse generation of He atoms exposed to a special three-color field. An ultrabroad supercontinuum with a bandwidth of 887 eV has been attained, supporting an isolated 4 as pulse straightforwardly by Fourier transforming. Utilizing available intense infrared femtosecond laser resource within the nonrelativistic regime, the produced laser pulse is near to zeptosecond region. Remarkably, the harmonic conversion efficiency is enhanced in terms of the double-plateau structure of the harmonic spectra, yielding high-intensity attosecond pulses with alternative plateau.

High-harmonic and single attosecond pulse generation using plasmonic field enhancement in ordered arrays of gold nanoparticles with chirped laser pulses

Coherent XUV sources, which may operate at MHz repetition rate, could find applications in high-precision spectroscopy and for spatio-time-resolved measurements of collective electron dynamics on nanostructured surfaces. We theoretically investigate utilizing the enhanced plasmonic fields in an ordered array of gold nanoparticles for the generation of high-harmonic, extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation. By optimization of the chirp of ultrashort laser pulses incident on the array, our simulations indicate a potential route towards the temporal shaping of the plasmonic near-field and, in turn, the generation of single attosecond pulses. The inherent effects of inhomogeneity of the local fields on the high-harmonic generation are analyzed and discussed. While taking the inhomogeneity into account does not affect the optimal chirp for the generation of a single attosecond pulse, the cut-off energy of the high-harmonic spectrum is enhanced by about a factor of two.

Capturing Ultrafast Quantum Dynamics with Femtosecond and Attosecond X-ray Core-Level Absorption Spectroscopy

Recent technical advances in ultrafast laser sources enable the generation of femtosecond and attosecond soft X-ray pulses in tabletop laser setups as well as accelerator-based synchrotron and free-electron laser sources. These new light sources can be harnessed via pump-probe spectroscopy to elucidate ultrafast quantum dynamics in atoms, molecules, and condensed matter with unprecedented time resolution and chemical sensitivity. Employing such ultrashort pulses in transient X-ray absorption spectroscopy combines the unique advantages of core-level absorption probing of chemical environments and oxidation states with the ability to obtain ultimately freeze-frame snapshots of electronic and nuclear dynamics. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the progress in applying the recently developed technique of femtosecond to attosecond time-resolved soft X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy to the study of ultrafast phenomena, including some of our own efforts to elucidate the interaction of intense laser pulses with atoms and molecules in the strong-field, nonperturbative limit. Possible avenues for future work are outlined.
