Association between weight perception and psychological distress

Examination of weight control practices in a non-clinical sample of college women

The current study examined healthy weight control practices among a sample of college women enrolled at an urban university (N=715; age=19.87±1.16; 77.2% Caucasian; 13.4% African American, 7.2% Asian, 2.2% other races). Participants completed measures as part of an on-line study about health habits, behaviors, and attitudes. Items from the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire were selected and evaluated with exploratory factor analysis to create a healthy weight control practices scale. Results revealed that college women, regardless of weight status, used a comparable number (four of eight) of practices. Examination of racial differences between Caucasian and African American women revealed that normal weight African American women used significantly fewer strategies than Caucasian women. Of note, greater use of healthy weight control practices was associated with higher cognitive restraint, drive for thinness, minutes of physical activity, and more frequent use of compensatory strategies. Higher scores on measures of binge and disinhibited eating, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, and depressive symptoms were associated with greater use of healthy weight control practices by underweight/normal weight but not by overweight/obese college women. Results suggest that among a sample of college females, a combination of healthy and potentially unhealthy weight control practices occurs. Implications of the findings suggest the need for effective weight management and eating disorder prevention programs for this critical developmental life stage. Such programs should be designed to help students learn how to appropriately use healthy weight control practices, as motivations for use may vary by weight status.

Accuracy of self-reported weight and height and resulting body mass index among obese binge eaters in primary care: relationship with eating disorder and associated psychopathology

OBJECTIVE

This study assessed the accuracy of self-reported weight, height, and body mass index in obese patients with binge-eating disorder (DSM-IV-TR criteria) presenting at primary care clinics and tested whether the degree of inaccuracy was associated with demographic factors or eating disorder and depressive features.

METHOD

Sixty-six participants were interviewed using the Eating Disorder Examination interview, completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory, and had their height and weight measured between November 2007 and May 2009.

RESULTS

Self-reported and measured weight did not differ significantly, but participants significantly overestimated their height (P < .01), and this discrepancy resulted in a significantly lower self-reported than measured body mass index (P < .05). Discrepancy scores did not differ by eating disorder or depressive symptoms, sex, or ethnicity, although increasing age was associated with overestimation of height and underestimation of body mass index.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that obese patients with binge-eating disorder in primary care settings are reasonably accurate reporters of weight and height and that the degree of inaccuracy does not appear to be systematically related to eating disorder psychopathology or depressive features.

Changes in the prevalence of psychological distress and use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications associated with comorbid chronic diseases in the adult Australian population, 2001-2008

OBJECTIVE

To investigate changes in the prevalence of psychological distress and use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications associated with comorbid chronic diseases in the adult Australian population from 2001 to 2008.

METHODS

Participants were 48,359 adults aged ≥ 25 years from the 2001, 2004-05 or 2007-08 Australian National Health Surveys. Clinically significant psychological distress was determined with the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (using scores ≥ 30). Contemporaneous use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications and the presence of chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, asthma and arthritis were by self-report.

RESULTS

Overall, the prevalence of psychological distress was relatively stable (3.9 vs. 3.7%) between 2001 and 2008, but increased from 5.9 to 7.0% and 4.6 to 5.0% for people with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In contrast, the use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications decreased from 7.3 to 4.8% across all disease categories. On average, the odds of psychological distress and use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications was 1.15 to 1.59-fold and 1.10 to 1.64-fold higher, respectively, for all chronic diseases after adjustments for socio-demographic and lifestyle variables. After further adjustment for all chronic disease predictors fitted jointly, these associations decreased in strength (percentage change in the log odds ratio) by 14 to 98%. Each additional chronic disease increased the odds of both psychological distress (1.34-fold higher) and use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications (1.40-fold higher) in a dose-response manner.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the prevalence of psychological distress changed little for adult Australians between 2001 and 2008, it increased for people with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Conversely, the reported use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications progressively decreased for people with, and without, chronic diseases. Overall, there was a persistently higher psychopathology burden associated with each and increasing number of comorbid chronic diseases.

Workplace weight loss program: impact on quality of life

OBJECTIVE

To determine the effectiveness of a 12-week workplace intervention program (WIP) focused on weight loss and reduction of cardiovascular risk factors on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the effect of delivery method on outcomes.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis of data collected in a 12-week trial comparing in-person (IP) and Internet-based (IB) intervention to identify the impact on HRQOL by utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HRQOL-14 questionnaire.

RESULTS

Repeated-measure analysis of variance indicated no significant intervention effect for HRQOL by group assignment. Within subjects, significant main effect was noted for improvement in Summative Index of unhealthy days, sleeplessness, and vitality days at weeks 12 and 26. At week 26, significant main effect was found for improved mentally unhealthy and depression days.

CONCLUSIONS

Improvement in HRQOL following a 12-week university-based WIP can occur independent of method of delivery (IP vs IB).

Trends in health-related quality of life and health service use associated with body mass index and comorbid major depression in South Australia, 1998-2008

PURPOSE

To investigate 10-year trends in health-related quality of life and health service use associated with body mass index (BMI) and comorbid major depression in South Australia.

METHODS

Data were obtained from 9,059 people aged ≥ 15 years who participated in representative surveys of the South Australian population in 1998, 2004, and 2008. Major depression was determined using the mood module of the PRIME-MD. Health-related quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 and 15-item AQoL instruments.

RESULTS

Mean health-related quality-of-life scores were 8-55% lower (worse), and health service use was 58-85% higher in all unhealthy BMI groups (underweight, overweight, and obesity) with major depression than in the healthy weight group independent of all covariates (socio-demographic and chronic medical conditions), consistently over the 10-year period. In contrast, only some unhealthy BMI groups without major depression had worse SF-36 physical component scores (overweight/obesity), AQoL scores (underweight/obesity), and health service use outcomes (overweight/obesity), and by only 2-6%.

CONCLUSION

Comorbid major depression explained most of the excess health-related quality of life and health service use in people with unhealthy BMI, consistently from 1998 to 2008. Interventions and policies that can mitigate the persistent excess population health and economic burden of major depression are needed.

Specific medical conditions associated with clinically significant depressive symptoms in men

PURPOSE

To define specific medical conditions associated with clinically significant depressive symptoms in men.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in a community-based sample of Australian men (N = 1,195, aged 35-80 years; for 2002-2005). Depression was defined by: (1) symptomatic depression (current symptoms) or (2) current prescription for antidepressant(s) or (3) previously diagnosed depression. Logistic regression was used to determine prevalence odds ratios (OR) for depression independently associated with an extensive range of demographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors. Adjusted population attributable risk (PAR%) estimates were also computed.

RESULTS

Depression was significantly (ORs at P < 0.05) associated with previously diagnosed anxiety (12.0) and insomnia (4.4), not married (1.7), current smoker (1.7), low muscle strength tertile (1.7, P = 0.059), high triglycerides (1.6), high storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) tertile (1.8), past year general practitioner visits 5-9 (1.9), middle energy density tertile (0.4), and high systolic blood pressure (0.5). Significant PAR% estimates (at P < 0.05) were for previous anxiety (27.0%) and insomnia (16.1%), middle energy density tertile (-17.2%), high SBP (-23.5%), high triglycerides (15.2%), and high storage LUTS tertile (12.6%). Results strengthened when depression-related factors (previous anxiety and insomnia, psycholeptics, and cognition) were omitted, and became significant for CVD (OR 1.6; PAR 13.9%).

CONCLUSIONS

Medical conditions associated with depression in men include high triglycerides, low muscle strength, CVD, and LUTS. Depressed men are likely to use health services frequently, be current smokers, not be married, eat unhealthily, and report previous diagnosis of anxiety and insomnia; which has important implications for clinicians managing male patients.

Obesity and the risk of disability in a 12-year cohort study: the role of psychological distress

PURPOSE

Recent cross-sectional findings suggest that co-occurring obesity and psychological problems amplify the risk of disability, but longitudinal evidence is lacking. We assessed this effect in a longitudinal cohort of adults.

METHODS

Twelve years of data (1994/1995-2006/2007) were obtained from the Canadian National Population Health Survey. This study followed 8,062 adults that were interviewed every 2 years. Disability status was derived from the Health Utility Index Mark 3. Covariates of interest were repeated psychological distress (Kessler K6 scale) and obesity (body mass index ≥30). Incidence of disability was estimated from Cox proportional hazards models, adjusting for sociodemographic and health variables. Hazard rate of disability in those with either obesity (n = 955) or distress (n = 1,044), or both (n = 138) were compared to those without (n = 5,925).

RESULTS

Participants with both obesity and repeated distress had double the risk of disability compared to those with obesity or distress alone {adjusted hazard ratio of 2.8 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.8, 4.5] compared to 1.4 (CI 1.1, 1.8) and 1.8 (CI 1.4, 2.3), respectively}.

CONCLUSIONS

Recurrent psychological distress combined with obesity amplified the risk for disability normally associated with these conditions.

Perception of overweight is associated with poor academic performance in US adolescents

BACKGROUND

To improve understanding of the mechanisms affecting the relationship between adolescent obesity and poor academic performance, we examined the association of overweight or perceived weight status with academic achievement.

METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional study of 14-17-year-olds (N = 11,012) from the nationally representative 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The main outcome measure was self-reported grades (mostly A, B, C, D, or F). The primary independent variables were medically defined overweight (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 85th percentile), obesity (BMI ≥ 95th percentile), and participants' perception of their weight status.

RESULTS

Medically defined overweight youth were less likely to report higher grades in unadjusted analysis (OR 0.67, 95% CI: 0.60-0.76, p < .001) and after adjustment for demographics, depression, television and video game use, and physical activity (OR 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74-0.94, p = .003). Statistically significant results also were seen with medically defined obese participants. Youth who perceived themselves as overweight were less likely to report higher grades (OR 0.82, 95% CI: 0.73-0.92, p = .001) in unadjusted analysis and after adjustment for the same variables (OR 0.79, 95% CI: 0.68-0.91, p = .002). The perception of overweight was a more significant determinant of academic performance (OR 0.81, 95% CI: 0.69-0.95, p = .012) compared to medically defined obesity (OR 0.90, 95% CI: 0.77-1.05, p = .174).

CONCLUSIONS

Perceived overweight status is negatively associated with academic performance, regardless of actual weight status. These findings suggest that perception of overweight may be a mechanism for prior results indicating a negative association of obesity and academic achievements, and have implications for the academic health of these adolescents.

Associations of mood and anxiety disorders with obesity: comparisons by ethnicity

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to compare the associations of mood and anxiety disorders (12 months and past diagnosis) with obesity among ethnically diverse adults.

METHODS

Data from Caucasians, African American, and Latinos in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R), National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS), and National Study of American Life (NSAL) were analyzed (n=17,445). Multivariate logistic regression models tested the associations between 12 month and past diagnosis of mood and anxiety disorders with obesity (body mass index ≥ 30kg/m²).

RESULTS

Approximately 52% of the sample was female and 24% obese. Among Caucasians, 12-month mood disorder (OR=1.30, 95% CI=1.05, 1.62), past diagnosis of mood disorder (OR=1.37, 95% CI=1.11, 1.69) and 12-month anxiety disorder (OR=1.40, 95% CI=1.02, 1.68) were associated with greater likelihood of obesity. Among African Americans, past year anxiety disorder (OR=1.63, 95% CI=0.92, 1.67) was associated with greater likelihood of obesity, and a trend toward an association between 12 month mood disorder (OR=1.24, 95% CI=0.92, 1.67) and obesity was observed. Similarly among Latinos, past year anxiety disorder (OR=1.45, 95% CI=1.00, 1.99) was associated with greater likelihood of obesity, and a trend toward an association between 12-month mood disorder (OR=1.26, 95% CI=0.94, 2.01) was observed. Tests of statistical interaction to assess heterogeneity of the associations of mood and anxiety disorders with obesity, comparing African Americans and Latinos to Caucasians, suggest differences in the association of past diagnosis of mood disorder with obesity (P<.10 for both groups).

CONCLUSIONS

Results suggest similar associations between 12-month mood and anxiety disorders with obesity across groups.

Mental ill-health across the continuum of body mass index

BACKGROUND

Several studies have found a non-linear relationship between mental ill-health and BMI with higher rates in both the underweight and the obese. This study evaluated the shape of the relationship between BMI and distress, suicidal ideation and self-reported mental ill-health conditions in a large population sample.

METHODS

Data were drawn from the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System (SAMSS) for the years 2002 to 2009 (n = 46,704). SAMSS monitors population trends in state and national risk factors and chronic diseases. Samples are drawn from all households with a functioning number in the Australian White Pages. Computer assisted telephone interviews collected information on self-reported height and weight, demographic and health behaviours. Respondents completed the Kessler Distress and suicidal ideation scales and reported specific mental ill-health conditions. BMI was categorized into deciles to allow for assessment of the shape of any associations with other variables. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between each mental ill-health condition and BMI-decile controlling for age in the base model. This was followed by a full model that added SES and the health-adverse coping behaviours of smoking, alcohol and physical activity to test for changes from the base model.

RESULTS

Non-linear associations were observed between BMI-decile and mental ill-health but statistically significantly greater odds of mental ill-health were observed only in the obese and not in the underweight after controlling for age, health-adverse behaviours and socioeconomic status. The association between BMI and mental ill-health might best be described as 'threshold'. Elevated odds were apparent for middle-aged persons, whereas younger and older individuals had a significantly lower odds of having a mental ill-health condition.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, this study has provided no support for the hypothesis of increased mental ill-health problems in the underweight but it has demonstrated the non-linear relationships between BMI and mental ill-health and between BMI and health-adverse behaviours. Non-linear relationships with BMI need to be recognized and addressed during analysis.

Psychological and behavioral correlates of excess weight: misperception of obese status among persons with Class II obesity

OBJECTIVE

This study examined psychological and behavioral correlates of weight status perception in 173 Class II obese adult community volunteers.

METHOD

Participants completed the Eating Disorder Examination-Self-Report (EDE-Q), Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ), Beck Depression Inventory, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale online. Key items assessed dieting frequency, weight history, and perceived current weight status (normal weight, overweight, or obese). Actual weight status was determined using NIDDK/CDC classification schemes.

RESULTS

Among participants with Class II obesity, 50.9% incorrectly classified their weight as overweight versus obese, whereas 49.1% accurately perceived their weight status as obese. Inaccurate participants reported significantly less binge eating and less eating disorder psychopathology. Despite similar BMI, inaccurate participants reported less distress regarding overeating and loss of control over eating.

DISCUSSION

Our findings suggest that obesity status underestimation is associated with less eating disorder psychopathology. Underestimation of obesity status may exacerbate risk for negative health consequences because of a failure to recognize and respond to excess weight.

Diet-induced obesity causes ghrelin resistance in arcuate NPY/AgRP neurons

Circulating ghrelin is decreased in obesity, and peripheral ghrelin does not induce food intake in obese mice. We investigated whether ghrelin resistance was a centrally mediated phenomenon involving dysregulated neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) circuits. We show that diet-induced obesity (DIO) (12 wk) suppresses the neuroendocrine ghrelin system by decreasing acylated and total plasma ghrelin, decreasing ghrelin and Goat mRNA in the stomach, and decreasing expression of hypothalamic GHSR. Peripheral (ip) or central (intracerebroventricular) ghrelin injection was able to induce food intake and arcuate nucleus Fos immunoreactivity in chow-fed but not high-fat diet-fed mice. DIO decreased expression of Npy and Agrp mRNA, and central ghrelin was unable to promote expression of these genes. Ghrelin did not induce AgRP or NPY secretion in hypothalamic explants from DIO mice. Injection of NPY intracerebroventricularly increased food intake in both chow-fed and high-fat diet-fed mice, indicating that downstream NPY/AgRP neural targets are intact and that defective NPY/AgRP function is a primary cause of ghrelin resistance. Ghrelin resistance in DIO is not confined to the NPY/AgRP neurons, because ghrelin did not stimulate growth hormone secretion in DIO mice. Collectively, our data suggests that DIO causes ghrelin resistance by reducing NPY/AgRP responsiveness to plasma ghrelin and suppressing the neuroendocrine ghrelin axis to limit further food intake. Ghrelin has a number of functions in the brain aside from appetite control, including cognitive function, mood regulation, and protecting against neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, central ghrelin resistance may potentiate obesity-related cognitive decline, and restoring ghrelin sensitivity may provide therapeutic outcomes for maintaining healthy aging.

The interaction of obesity and psychological distress on disability

BACKGROUND

Prior research has shown that psychological problems interact with various chronic medical conditions to amplify disability, but no study has investigated this effect in obesity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the synergistic interaction of psychological distress and obesity on functional disability in an adult community sample.

METHODS

Cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey, a nationally representative sample of 53,416 respondents aged 18 years or older. Our outcome measures were self-reported disability days and self-rated health. Our covariates of interest were non-specific psychological distress (Kessler K10 scale) and body mass index (BMI). Odds ratios of disability measures were estimated by psychological distress and weight status from logistic regressions, adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical variables.

RESULTS

Disability status was more frequent in individuals with obesity and psychological distress than in those with either obesity or psychological distress alone. Adjusted odds ratios increased progressively across BMI and psychological distress categories. Significant interactions were found for (a) obesity class I (BMI between 30.0 and 34.9 kg m(-2)) and high psychological distress; and (b) obesity class II-III (BMI > 35 kg m(-2)) and moderate to high distress.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest a strong association between psychological distress, obesity and disability. Addressing psychological distress in obese individuals might reduce the public health burden of comorbid obesity and psychological distress by tackling disability.

Awareness of obesity and diabetes: a survey of a subset of British male drivers

Behavior modification necessary to tackle obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) requires individual awareness of the existing problem.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to assess body weight perception, awareness of the relation between adiposity and T2DM, and the relation between adiposity and weight loss attempts.

METHODS

Male drivers were recruited randomly from motorway service stations between May and July 2007, completed a questionnaire and had body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and body composition.

RESULTS

Participants included 266 men, median age 52 years, and BMI 28.25 kg/m2. Obesity prevalence was 46% based on BMI and 73% based on WC. Participants underestimated their WC (94.3 ± 10.2 vs. 102.9 ± 11.41 cm, estimated vs. actual, p < .001). Of participants with normal BMI, 18% thought they were overweight, whereas 26% of overweight thought they were "just right" and 19% of obese recognized their obesity. Based on WC, 30% of participants with normal WC thought they were obese and 9% of obese realized they were obese. Only 25% and 42% of participants recognized that T2DM is associated with large waist and obesity, respectively. A total of 81% of overweight and 62% of obese participants (based on BMI) believed that they were not at increased risk of T2DM. Self-perception of adiposity weakly predicted weight loss attempts (λ = 0.28, p = .008).

CONCLUSION

Male drivers significantly underestimate their adiposity and risk of T2DM. Further public education regarding obesity, its associated health risks, and the benefits of weight loss is needed.

Where perception meets reality: self-perception of weight in overweight adolescents

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study was to examine weight misperception among overweight adolescents in recent years and compare the demographic characteristics and weight-related behaviors of overweight adolescents who accurately and inaccurately perceive their weight status.

METHODS

We used data from the nationally representative Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, collected every 2 years from 1999 through 2007. On the basis of self-reported height and weight, BMI percentile for age and sex was calculated. Overweight and obese respondents (BMI > or = 85th percentile) were classified into 2 groups: (1) misperceivers (weight perception "about right" or "underweight") or (2) accurate perceivers (weight perception "overweight"). We examined the proportion of misperceivers at each time point. Using the 2007 data, we compared demographic characteristics and weight-related behaviors of accurate perceivers and misperceivers with bivariate and multivariate analyses.

RESULTS

Among overweight adolescents, the overall proportion of misperceivers ranged between 29% and 33% from 1999 through 2007. In 2007, 23% of overweight girls and 40% of overweight boys were misperceivers (P < .001). Both male and female accurate perceivers were significantly more likely than misperceivers to report trying to maintain or lose weight, exercising for weight control, and eating less for weight control. Adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, and BMI percentile, no significant differences in unhealthy weight-related behaviors were found between accurate perceivers and misperceivers in boys or girls. Male accurate perceivers were significantly less likely to report achieving recommended levels of fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Nearly 3 in 10 overweight adolescents do not consider themselves overweight. Those with an accurate weight perception reported some healthy weight-related behaviors but not higher levels of unhealthy weight-related behaviors. With the substantial prevalence of weight misperception, clinicians should consider their patients' perceived weight status when pursuing patient-centered counseling of overweight adolescents.

Prospective effects of weight perception and weight comments on psychological health among Chinese adolescents

AIM

To investigate the prospective effects of weight perception of self and weight comments by others on psychological health problems among Chinese adolescents.

METHODS

In the Hong Kong Student Obesity Surveillance project, 8716 adolescents (41.3% boys) aged 14.2 +/- 1.7 years were followed prospectively. Logistic regression yielded odds ratios (ORs) for psychological health problems at 1-year follow-up by weight comments received and weight perception at baseline (2006), adjusting for each other sociodemographic factors and body mass index.

RESULTS

Perceived fatness at baseline predicted subsequent headache and feeling stressful with adjusted ORs (95% confidence intervals) of 1.17 (1.03-1.33) and 1.20 (1.03-1.39), respectively. Perceived thinness at baseline did not predict any subsequent health problems. Receiving incorrect weight comments at baseline also predicted headache, feeling stressful and feeling depressed at follow-up, with adjusted ORs of 1.19 (1.08-1.31), 1.26 (1.04-1.53) and 1.38 (1.10-1.74) respectively. No gender difference was found in the effects of weight perception and weight comments on psychological outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

In adolescents, perceived fatness and incorrect weight comments predicted psychological health problems at 1-year follow-up. Family members, peers and other social contacts should realize the potential adverse effects of their weight comments, and adolescents should be taught how to correctly assess their weight status.

Relationships between body mass index, mental health, and suicidal ideation: population perspective using two methods

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), mental health, and suicidal ideation in a general population.

METHOD

Two random and representative samples were drawn from the South Australian population. The interview techniques differed, as did the measures of depression and suicidality. One involved 3034 people in face-to-face interviews, and the other involved 30 214 persons providing information via a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) system. BMI was classified according to World Health Organization criteria. In face-to-face interviews, major depression was defined by the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD) and suicidal ideation by direct enquiry. In the CATI data, psychological distress was assessed on the Kessler 10 instrument and suicidal ideation by four items on the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Data analysis controlled for demographic and physical health variables.

RESULTS

In the face-to-face interviews, the combined obese and morbidly obese men were significantly less likely to have major depression or suicidal ideation than those of a healthy weight. For the telephone interview-derived data, the only significant finding was for overweight women to report less psychological distress than those of a healthy weight.

CONCLUSIONS

It is no longer tenable to assume that increased BMI is necessarily associated with major depression, psychological distress, or suicidal ideation. Indeed, it appears protective for some people.

College student participants (N=1063; 77.8% response rate) completed a web-based survey assessing demographics, depression, anxiety, body image, cigarette smoking, and weight history. Among overweight participants, 42.6% of those who believed they were overweight admitted to binge eating, while only 30.1% who did not feel overweight did so (p<.05). Among non-overweight participants, 43.2% of those who believed they were overweight admitted to binge eating, while only 32.9% of those who did not feel overweight did so (p<.05). Weight Problem Perception (WPP) mediated the contribution of BMI on binge eating outcomes, and WPP contributed significantly to the prediction of binge eating, beyond the risk conferred by established correlates of binge eating (e.g., gender, mood, and cigarette smoking). Results suggest that when assessing risk for binge eating, a one-question assessment of whether or not an individual believes s/he is overweight has significant predictive power. Findings are consistent with literature on the importance of the "fat self-schema" [Stein, K.F., & Corte, C. (2007). Mood, Weight, and Physical Activity Among Obese Individuals Enrolled In a Long-term Weight-loss Program: Trajectories and Associations with Gender

OBJECTIVE: To examine the trajectories of mood, weight and physical activity, and associations between mood, weight, and gender, among 213 obese individuals. METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal design. Assessments at baseline and 6, 12, and 18 months of Profile of Mood States, Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire, and weight. RESULTS: Total mood disturbance decreased from baseline to 6 months, with no change thereafter. Weight decreased from baseline to 6 to 12 months, and increased from 12 to 18 months. Physical activity increased from baseline to 6 months, and 12 to 18 months. Increased physical activity predicted greater vigor and less fatigue over time. Females high in distress at 6 months lost less weight than females low in distress and at 18 months gained more weight than those low in distress. There were no such associations among males. CONCLUSION: The trajectories of mood, weight and physical activity were synchronous only in the short-term. Distress monitoring, targeted to females who relapse, may be warranted.
