Abstract
Doubly and triply bridged 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (ex-TTF) derivatives have been synthesized. Key steps are the generation and macrocyclization reactions of ex-TTF-dithiolate reagents. The X-ray crystal structures of the doubly bridged cyclophanes 15 and 16 and the triply bridged system 23 show that the saddle-like conformation of the ex-TTF framework is enhanced by the short bridges between the dithiole rings. Unlike all previous ex-TTF derivatives (which display a single quasi-reversible two-electron oxidation wave, D0 --> D2+), cyclic voltammetry of the cyclophanes reveals two reversible, one-electron oxidation steps (D0 --> D*+ --> D2+), with differences between the half-wave potentials (E2(1/2) - E1(1/2)) of 0.22-0.26 V. The conformational changes and gain in aromaticity which drive the second oxidation process in unrestricted ex-TTF systems (including singly bridged cyclophanes) have been prevented by multiple bridging. The radical cation species gives rise to a very broad, low-energy band (lambdamax = 2175 and 2040 nm for 15 and 21, respectively), assigned to an intramolecular interaction. The steric constraints imposed by multiple bridging have become so extreme that the pi-framework of 15, 16, 21, and 23 exhibits remarkable optical and redox behavior which is not characteristic of ex-TTF systems.

Abstract
A novel polythienylenevinylene (PTV) and two new polythiophenes (PTs), featuring fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units, have been prepared and characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroelectrochemistry. All polymers undergo two sequential, reversible oxidation processes in solution. Structures in which the TTF species is directly linked to the polymer backbone (2 and 4) display redox behavior which is dictated by the fulvalene system. Once the TTF is spatially removed from the polymer chain by a nonconjugated link (polymer 3), the electroactivity of both TTF and polythiophene moieties can be detected. Computational studies confirm the delocalization of charge over both electroactive centers (TTF and PT) and the existence of a triplet dication intermediate. PTV 4 has a low band gap (1.44 eV), is soluble in common organic solvents, and is stable under ambient conditions. Organic solar cells of polymer 4:[6,6]-phenyl-C(61) butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) have been fabricated. Under illumination, a photovoltaic effect is observed with a power conversion efficiency of 0.13% under AM1.5 solar simulated light. The onset of photocurrent at 850 nm is consistent with the onset of the pi-pi absorption band of the polymer. Remarkably, UV-vis spectroelectrochemistry of polymer 4 reveals that the conjugated polymer chain remains unchanged during the oxidation of the polymer.

Abstract
[structure: see text] We report the synthesis of a novel end-capped sexithiophene derivative bearing two pendent, fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units linked to the main chain through 1,4-dithiin heterocycles. Cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectroscopy are used to investigate the electronic properties of this hybrid electroactive material. The oligomer has a band gap of 2.1 eV, and the material can be oxidized through the sexithiophene and TTF units simultaneously.

Abstract
A new family of pi-extended TTF analogues (3a-c) and D-pi-A chromophores (5a-c), in which the electroactive units (1,3-dithiole rings and 2,2-dicyanovinyl groups) are connected through a pyridine bridge with a meta substitution pattern, is reported. The redox behavior of these compounds has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculations performed at the B3P86/6-31G** level. Unlike many pi-extended TTF derivatives, the 1,3-dithiole rings in compounds 3a-c do not behave independently and two oxidation processes are observed with an anodic separation ranging from 50 to 150 mV. Calculations show that electrons are equally extracted from both dithiole rings. A biradical structure is predicted for the dication state due to the near-degeneracy of the HOMO and HOMO - 1 orbitals. The presence of both donor (D) and acceptor (A) fragments in conjugates results in irreversible oxidation and reduction processes associated with the 1,3-dithiole ring and with the 2,2-dicyanovinyl moiety, respectively. An electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical (ECE) process takes place for all the compounds reported. The chemical process implies the dimerization of the radical cation for compounds 5 and the oligomerization of the biradical dication for compounds 3. The ECE process therefore generates new neutral dimeric (5) or oligomeric (3) species that incorporate the TTF vinylogue core.

Abstract
Fully conjugated giant macrocyclic oligothiophenes with 60pi, 90pi,120pi, 150pi, and 180pi frames (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) have been designed, and their butyl-substituted derivatives (1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, and 5a) have been synthesized using modified Sonogashira and McMurry coupling reactions as key steps. The 60-180pi systems 1-5 are circular with 1.8-6 nm inner cavities and 3.3-7.5 nm outside molecular diameters. Compound 1a containing ten 3,4-dibutyl-2,5-thienylene, eight ethynylene, and two vinylene units has been converted into macrocyclic oligo(3,4-dibutyl-2,5-thienylene-ethynylene) 6a using bromination/dehydrobromination procedure. Giant macrocycles 1a-6a exhibit a red shift of their absorption spectra and a fairly strong fluorescence with a large Stokes shift as compared to a linear conjugated counterpart having five thiophene rings. Compounds 1a-6a exhibit multistep reversible redox behaviors with fairly low first oxidation potentials, reflecting their cyclic conjugation. Furthermore, chemical oxidation of 1a-6a with FeCl3 shows drastic changes of spectroscopic properties due to intramolecular and intermolecular pi-pi interactions. Doping of 1a-3a with iodine forms semiconductor due to its pi-donor properties and pi-pi stacking ability. X-ray analysis of 1a confirmed a round, planar structure with nanoscale inner cavity, and revealed host ability for alkanes and unique packing structure. Interestingly, 2a and 3a self-aggregate in the solid state to form "molecular wires," which are about 200 nm thick and more than 1 mm long. The internal structures of fibrous aggregates have been investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
A comprehensive investigation of selenium chemical shift tensors is presented. Experimentally determined chemical shift tensors were obtained from solid-state 77Se NMR spectra for several organic, organometallic, or inorganic selenium-containing compounds. The first reported indirect spin-spin coupling between selenium and chlorine is observed for Ph(2)SeCl(2) where 1J(77Se,35Cl)iso is 110 Hz. Selenium magnetic shielding tensors were calculated for all of the molecules investigated using zeroth-order regular approximation density functional theory, ZORA DFT. The computations provide the orientations of the chemical shift tensors, as well as a test of the theory for calculating the magnetic shielding interaction for heavier elements. The ZORA DFT calculations were performed with nonrelativistic, scalar relativistic, and scalar with spin-orbit relativistic levels of theory. Relativistic contributions to the magnetic shielding tensor were found to be significant for (NH4)2WSe4 and of less importance for organoselenium, organophosphine selenide, and inorganic selenium compounds containing lighter elements.

Abstract
Electron transfer is the simplest reaction possible, yet it has a profound impact on the structure and reactivity of organic compounds. These changes allow a new look at some of the fundamental concepts that are used to explain organic chemistry, such as symmetry, aromaticity, and bonding. The results from high-level electronic structure calculations are used to analyze the mechanistic differences in the pericyclic reactions of simple hydrocarbons and their radical cation counterparts. The importance of state symmetry correlation, Jahn-Teller distortions, delocalization, and fractional bonding for the reaction pathways of hydrocarbon radical cations is discussed.

Abstract
Derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene (9) and 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) have been synthesised using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions of (1,3-dithiol-2-yl)phosphonate reagents with fluorenone and thioxanthen-9-one. X-ray crystallography, solution electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry and simultaneous electrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance (SEEPR), combined with theoretical calculations performed at the B3P86/6-31G** level, elucidate the interplay of the electronic and structural properties in these molecules. These compounds are strong two-electron donors, and the oxidation potentials depend on the electronic structure of the oxidised state. Two, single-electron oxidations (E(1)ox < E(1)ox) were observed for 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene systems (9). In contrast, derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) display the unusual phenomenon of inverted potentials (E(1)ox > E(1)ox) resulting in a single, two-electron oxidation process. The latter is due to the aromatic structure of the thioxanthenium cation (formed on the loss of a second electron), which stabilises the dication state (10(2+)) compared with the radical cation. This contrasts with the nonaromatic structure of the fluorenium cation of system 9. The two-electron oxidation wave in the thioxanthene derivatives is split into two separate one-electron waves in the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone derivatives 27-29 owing to destabilisation of the dication state.

Abstract
A new class of electroactive receptors has been synthesized, built by covalent association of five subunits: two calixarene platforms for spatial organization, two polyether 3D cavities for cation binding, and one electroactive TTF unit to probe the complexation event. Sodium complexation induces rigidification of the molecular assembly, as shown by 1H NMR titration and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies on free receptor 14 and a corresponding complex with two bound sodium atoms per receptor (15-(NaPF6)2). The calixarene units in these receptors change from a pinched cone conformation in the free ligand to a symmetrical cone in the complex. Cyclovoltammetric studies validated the electrochemical recognition concept of these five-member assemblies.

Abstract
By combining tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) and triarylamines, four TTF-triarylamine conjugates bridged by an annulated pyrrole ring were designed and synthesized by an N-arylation reaction. Electrochemical and photophysical investigations suggest that these novel conjugates possess very strong electron-donating ability with very high HOMO energy levels of around -4.70 eV; the HOMOs are mainly located on the TTF moiety. We observed significant electronic coupling between the TTF moieties and the triarylamine groups. However, no evidence for such electronic communication between end-capping TTF units (conjugates 5 and 7) or between two terminal triarylamine groups (conjugate 9) could be found. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements together with PM3-optimized geometries suggest that conjugates 5 and 7, which adopt three-dimensional propeller-shaped structures, may easily pack and crystallize in the solid state because of the large rigid planar blades consisting of TTF and one of the phenyl rings of the triarylamine moiety. However, conjugate 9, with two bulky end-capping triarylamine groups, forms an amorphous material with a glass transition at 74.5 degrees C.

Abstract
Syntheses of the first bis-calixarenes systems bridged by a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) framework 5a,b have been carried out in good yields through triethyl phosphite-mediated dechalcogenation-dimerizations of the corresponding 1,3-dithiole-2-(thi)ones 3 or 4. X-ray structures of the calix[4]arene-TTF-calix[4]arene assembly 5b and of the calix[4]arene-thione intermediate 3b are analyzed and confirm the cone conformations adopted by the calix[4]arene parts, as it is also observed by (1)H NMR analysis of these systems. The solid-state organization in 5b leads to alternate layers of calixarene and TTF units. The cyclic voltammograms of 5a,b show as expected a two-step redox behavior but display a CV deformation for the second redox process.
