Abstract
Nano-sized toroidal copper(II)-hydroxide/pyrazolate assemblies, lined by H-bond donors on the inside and hydrophobic on the outside, selectively extract sulfate from mixtures with nitrate or perchlorate. Tetrabutylammonium "lids" seal the "nano-jars" and render the encapsulated sulfate anion completely buried and inaccessible, so that it is not precipitated by Ba(2+) ions.

Abstract
A series of metallo-macrocyclic based coordination polymers has been prepared from flexible amide ligands N-6-[(3-pyridylmethylamino)carbonyl]-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (L1-CH(3)) and N-6-[(4-pyridylmethylamino)carbonyl]-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (L2-CH(3)). In all but one case, self-assembled dinuclear metallo-macrocyclic units form the basis of the polymeric structures, whereby discrete metal centres, and dinuclear or trinuclear clusters, are linked by the self-assembled macrocycles to give 1D and 2D coordination polymers. In one instance, a 1D coordination polymer is formed in a reaction carried out under ambient conditions; when the same reaction is conducted under solvothermal conditions a 2D structure is formed. In all but two of these structures, the polymeric chains and nets are close-packed within the crystals. In the case of a 6,3-connected 2D coordination polymer {[Cd(3)(L2-CH(3))(3)(NO(3))(L2)(CH(3)OH)](NO(3))(2)·12½H(2)O}(n) (9), small oval channels percolate down the a-axis of the unit cell.

Abstract
Readily synthesised and functionalised di-1,2,3-triazole "click" ligands are shown to self-assemble into coordinatively saturated, quadruply stranded helical [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cages with Pd(II) ions. The cages have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, HR-ESMS, IR, (1)H, (13)C and DOSY NMR, DFT calculations, and in one case by X-ray crystallography. By exploiting the CuAAC "click" reaction we were able to rapidly generate a small family of di-1,2,3-triazole ligands with different core spacer units and peripheral substituents and examine how these structural modifications affected the formation of the [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cages. The use of both flexible (1,3-propyl) and rigid (1,3-phenyl) core spacer units led to the formation of discrete [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cage complexes. However, when the spacer unit of the di-1,2,3-triazole ligand was a 1,4-substituted-phenyl group steric interactions led to the formation of an oligomeric/polymeric species. By keeping the 1,3-phenyl core spacer constant the effect of altering the "click" ligands' peripheral substituents was also examined. It was shown that ligands with alkyl, phenyl, electron-rich and electron-poor benzyl substituents all quantitatively formed [Pd(2)L(4)](BF(4))(4) cage complexes. The results suggest that a wide range of functionalised palladium(II) "click" cages could be rapidly generated. These novel molecules may potentially find uses in catalysis, molecular recognition and drug delivery.

Abstract
The synthesis of the new cofacial binuclear zinc complex [Zn(2)(L)] of a Schiff-base pyrrole macrocycle is reported. It was discovered that the binuclear microenvironment between the two metals of [Zn(2)(L)] is suited for the encapsulation of anions, leading to the formation of [K(THF)(6)][Zn(2)(μ-Cl)(L)]·2THF and [Bu(n)(4)N][Zn(2)(μ-OH)(L)] which were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Unusually obtuse Zn-X-Zn angles (X = Cl: 150.54(9)° and OH: 157.4(3)°) illustrate the weak character of these interactions and the importance of the cleft preorganization to stabilize the host. In the absence of added anion, aggregation of [Zn(2)(L)] was inferred and investigated by successive dilutions and by the addition of coordinating solvents to [Zn(2)(L)] solutions using NMR spectroscopy as well as isothermal microcalorimetry (ITC). On anion addition, evidence for deaggregation of [Zn(2)(L)], combined with the formation of the 1:1 host-guest complex, was observed by NMR spectroscopy and ITC titrations. Furthermore, [Zn(2)(L)] binds to Cl(-) selectively in THF as deduced from the ITC analyses, while other halides induce only deaggregation. These conclusions were reinforced by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which indicated that the binding energies of OH(-) and Cl(-) were significantly greater than for the other halides.

Abstract
This critical review is dedicated to the anion complexation chemistry of amide- and urea-functionalized (benzo)pyrroles, such as pyrroles, indoles, carbazoles, isoindoles, naphthalenodipyrroles and benzodipyrroles. It provides a comprehensive overview of these simple and neutral anion sensors from the first examples up to very recent studies. There is a discussion of a gradual progress made over time, often based on careful analysis of the properties of former generations that have subsequently led to obtaining excellent effectivities and selectivities. The influence of these species on other fields of chemistry and their applications there are also discussed (57 references).

Abstract
This critical review covers advances in anion complexation in the year 2008 and 2009. The review discusses anion receptors that employ hydrogen bond donors (both NH and CH), electrostatic interactions, Lewis acidic centres and combinations of these three types of binding interaction to complex anions. Additionally nanotechnological approaches to anion sensing in aqueous solution, lipid bilayer transporters and recent work on the use of anions to drive conformational change are highlighted (130 references).
