Abstract
Various oxirane monomers including alkyl ether or allyl-substituted ones such as 1-butene oxide, 1-hexene oxide, 1-octene oxide, butyl glycidyl ether, allyl glycidyl ether, and 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether were anionically copolymerized with CO2 into polycarbonates using onium salts as initiator in the presence of triethylborane. All copolymerizations exhibited a "living" character, and the monomer consumption was monitored by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The various polycarbonate samples obtained were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, and differential scanning calorimetry. In a second step, all-polycarbonate triblock copolymers demonstrating elastomeric behavior were obtained in one pot by sequential copolymerization of CO2 with two different epoxides, using a difunctional initiator. 1-Octene oxide was first copolymerized with CO2 to form the central soft poly(octene carbonate) block which was flanked by two external rigid poly(cyclohexene carbonate) blocks obtained through subsequent copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide with CO2. Upon varying the ratio of 1-octene oxide to cyclohexene oxide and their respective ratios to the initiator, three all-polycarbonate triblock samples were prepared with molar masses of about 350 kg/mol and 22, 26, and 29 mol % hard block content, respectively. The resulting triblock copolymers were analyzed using 1H NMR, GPC, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and atomic force microscopy. All three samples demonstrated typical elastomeric behavior characterized by a high elongation at break and ultimate tensile strength in the same range as those of other natural and synthetic rubbers, in particular those used in applications such as tissue engineering.

Abstract
Bifunctional Al porphyrins worked as excellent catalysts for the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and CO2.
Bifunctional AlIII porphyrins with quaternary ammonium halides, 2-Cl and 2-Br, worked as excellent catalysts for the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and CO2 at 120 °C. Turnover frequency (TOF) and turnover number (TON) reached 10 000 h–1 and 55 000, respectively, and poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) with molecular weight of up to 281 000 was obtained with a catalyst loading of 0.001 mol%. In contrast, bifunctional MgII and ZnII counterparts, 3-Cl and 4-Cl, as well as a binary catalyst system, 1-Cl with bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride (PPNCl), showed poor catalytic performances. Kinetic studies revealed that the reaction rate was first-order in [CHO] and [2-Br] and zero-order in [CO2], and the activation parameters were determined: ΔH‡ = 12.4 kcal mol–1, ΔS‡ = –26.1 cal mol–1 K–1, and ΔG‡ = 21.6 kcal mol–1 at 80 °C. Comparative DFT calculations on two model catalysts, AlIII complex 2′ and MgII complex 3′, allowed us to extract key factors in the catalytic behavior of the bifunctional AlIII catalyst. The high polymerization activity and carbonate-linkage selectivity originate from the cooperative actions of the metal center and the quaternary ammonium cation, both of which facilitate the epoxide-ring opening by the carbonate anion to form the carbonate linkage in the key transition state such as TS3b (ΔH‡ = 13.3 kcal mol–1, ΔS‡ = –3.1 cal mol–1 K–1, and ΔG‡ = 14.4 kcal mol–1 at 80 °C).

Abstract
The ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides is a promising method for the synthesis of new polyesters with various polymer properties. Among previously reported metal catalysts for ROCOP, the Schiff-base complexes have gained significant attention because of their ease of synthesis and modification. In this work, zinc and magnesium complexes containing Schiff-base ligands with different alkoxy side arms [-(CH2)2O- and -(CH2)3O-] were synthesized and shown to have a cubane metal core by X-ray crystal structures. All complexes were studied in the ROCOP of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and succinic anhydride (SA) in toluene at 110 °C. The zinc complex having a shorter side arm is the most active catalyst for copolymerization, giving poly(CHO-alt-SA) with narrow dispersity and negligible ether linkage. On the other hand, magnesium complexes were not active because of the formation of stable carboxylate species. The detailed analysis of polyester obtained from zinc complexes unexpectedly revealed three different types of polymer structures occurring at different polymerization times. Cyclic polymer was generated at the beginning by intramolecular transesterification of the alkoxy side arm, giving a low-molecular-weight polyester. At higher conversion, cyclization diminished, giving just a linear polyester but with minor competitive formation of higher-molecular-weight polyester having cyclohexanediol as an end group. On the basis of a thorough understanding of the polymerization mechanism, the desired cyclic poly(CHO-alt-SA) was successfully synthesized using a low monomer/catalyst ratio.

Theoretical study on preference of open polymer vs. cyclic products in CO 2/epoxide copolymerization with cobalt(III)-salen bifunctional catalysts. J Mol Model 2020; 26:113. Abstract
The preference of open chain of growing macromolecule vs. possible cyclic form was examined for the bifunctional cobalt(III)-salen catalyst for the copolymerization of CO2 with epoxides. A variety of possible isomers was considered (resulting from trans/cis-β salen arrangement, different mutual orientation of quaternary ammonium-chains, and possible binding modes). To explore the conformational space, a combined approach was applied, utilizing semiempirical (PM7) MD and the DFT calculations. The preference of the open and cyclic macromolecules attached to the metal center was compared with the corresponding results for isolated model macromolecules, and the systems built of the macromolecule interacting with the tetra-butyl ammonium cation. Result shows that the cyclic structures are strongly preferred for isolated ions, with relatively low cyclization barriers. In the field of positive point charge, the open structures are strongly preferred. For the ions interacting with tetrabutyl ammonium cation, the cyclic structures are preferred, due to delocalization of the positive charge in the cation. For the complexes involving model and “real” Co(III)-salen catalysts, the open structures are strongly preferred. The possible cyclization by dissociation of alkoxide and its transfer to the neighborhood of quaternary ammonium cation is characterized by high activation barriers. Further, the transfer of alkoxide from the metal center to the cation is less likely than the transfer of carbonate, since the metal-alkoxide bond-energy energy is much stronger than energy of metal-carbonate bonding, as shown by ETS-NOCV results. The conclusions are in qualitative agreement with experimental data showing high selectivity towards copolymer formation in the copolymerization processes catalyzed by bifunctional Co(III) salen-complexes. Abstract
Aryl isocyanates are introduced as comonomers for ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) with epoxides. Informed by studies of reaction kinetics, we show that divergent sequence selectivity for AB- and ABB-type copolymers can be achieved with a single dimagnesium catalyst. The resulting materials respectively constitute a new class of polyurethanes (PUs) and a new class of materials featuring an unprecedented backbone structure, the polyallophanates (PAs). The successful use of isocyanate comonomers in this way marks a new direction for the field of ROCOP while providing distinct opportunities for expansion of PU structural diversity. Specifically, the methodology reported herein delivers PUs featuring fully substituted (tertiary) carbamyl nitrogen atoms, a structural motif that is almost inaccessible via extant polymerization strategies. Thus, in one step from commercially available comonomers, our methodology expands the scope of ROCOP and gives access to diverse materials featuring both privileged (PU) and unexplored (PA) microstructures.

Abstract
Copper-mediated reductive coupling between CO2 and an aldehyde to form α-hydroxycarboxylic acid was achieved using silylborane as a reductant. CO2 cleanly inserted into a copper-carbon bond that was formed by the reaction between a silylcopper-NHC complex and an aldehyde. A series of reactions that regenerate the silylcopper complex were developed for the synthesis of an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid. After repeating each step iteratively for two cycles, 0.62 equiv of α-hydroxycarboxylic acid based on the copper complex was obtained.

Abstract
Whatever the chemistry used for the synthesis of aliphatic polycarbonates, in particular, those of high molar mass, the adventitious presence of water leads to bimodal GPC traces and affords polycarbonate samples of uncontrolled and unpredictable molar masses. It appears that among all reagents used in the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides, CO2 is the most difficult one to dry. To address this issue, triisobutylaluminum (TiBA) was employed in this work to dry CO2 through a bubbling method; its drying capability was investigated in the context of the copolymerization of CO2 with epoxides initiated by onium chloride in the presence of triethylborane (TEB). It was then compared to the efficiency of other already reported drying agents such as phosphorus pentoxide, molecular sieves and commercially available CO2 purifiers. With TiBA-dried CO2, its copolymerizations respectively with propylene oxide (PO) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) could be successfully achieved in a wide range of degrees of polymerization (DP), with the value of DP as high as 16000. Diblock copolymers poly(propylene carbonate-b-cyclohexene carbonate) (PPC-b-PCHC) could also be prepared through sequential addition of epoxide monomers. The polycarbonates obtained under the conditions were all well-defined as characterized by NMR, GPC, triple detector-GPC, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract
The ring opening copolymerisation of CO2 and epoxides is a useful means to valorise waste emissions and to reduce pollution in polymer manufacturing. Heterodinuclear catalysts, particularly those of Zn(ii)/Mg(ii), have shown better performances than homodinuclear analogues in this reaction. As part of on-going efforts to better understand the catalytic synergy, this work describes a series of heterodinuclear complexes, combining Zn(ii) with a metal from Group 13 (M = Al(iii), Ga(iii) or In(iii)). The complexes are synthesised from a symmetrical macrocyclic ligand in high yields via sequential metalation steps and are the thermodynamic reaction products. The Zn(ii)/Group 13 complexes are effective homogeneous catalysts for the ring opening copolymerisation (ROCOP) of cyclohexene oxide at 1 bar pressure of carbon dioxide, but all show inferior performances compared to the di-zinc analogue. The CO2 uptake into the polymer increases in the order Al(iii) < Ga(iii) < In(iii) which is attributed to lower Lewis acidity heavier Group 13 homologues showing a reduced tendency to form ether linkages. Concurrently, polycarbonate activity increases down the Group 13 series consistent with weaker metal-oxygen bonds which show enhanced lability to insertion reactions.

Abstract
Based on the ligand H2dpPzda (1), a novel cobalt complex [Co(H2dpPzda)(NCS)2]·CH3OH(2) has been synthesized and characterized. The Complex 2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance for converting CO2 into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. For propylene oxide (PO) and CO2 synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC), the catalytic system showed a remarkable TOF as high as 29,200 h−1. The catalytic system also showed broad substrate scope of epoxide. Additionally, the catalyst could be recycled to maintain the integrity of the structure and remained equal to the level of its catalytic activity even after seven catalytic rounds. Additionally, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed due to the high catalytic activity which might be owing to the synergism of Lewis acidic metal centers and N group.

Abstract
Switchable polymerization provides the opportunity to regulate polymer sequence and structure in a one-pot process from mixtures of monomers. Herein we report the use of O2 as an external stimulus to switch the polymerization mechanism from the radical polymerization of vinyl monomers mediated by (Salen)CoIII -R [Salen=N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine; R=alkyl] to the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of CO2 /epoxides. Critical to this process is unprecedented monooxygen insertion into the Co-C bond, as rationalized by DFT calculations, leading to the formation of (Salen)CoIII -O-R as an active species to initiate ROCOP. Diblock poly(vinyl acetate)-b-polycarbonate could be obtained by ROCOP of CO2 /epoxides with preactivation of (Salen)Co end-capped poly(vinyl acetate). Furthermore, a poly(vinyl acetate)-b-poly(methyl acrylate)-b-polycarbonate triblock copolymer was successfully synthesized by a (Salen)cobalt-mediated sequential polymerization with an O2 -triggered switch in a one-pot process.

Abstract
A family of di-nuclear bis(benzotriazole iminophenolate) (BiIBTP) cobalt complexes containing diverse ancillary carboxylate derivatives have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The one-pot synthesis of the BiIBTP ligand precursor with cobalt perchlorate salt (2.0 equiv.) and carboxylic acid derivatives (2.0 or 5.0 equiv.) in the presence of triethylamine (5.0 equiv.) under refluxing methanolic solution generated bimetallic di-carboxylate Co(ii)/Co(ii) complexes [(C83CBiIBTP)Co2(O2CR)2] (R = C6H5 (1), C6F5 (2), 4-CF3-C6H4 (3), 4-OMe-C6H4 (4), CF3 (5)) in ≧65% yields. Interestingly, the Co(ii)/Co(iii) mixed-valence complex 6 resulted from the treatment of 1 with silver perchlorate (1.0 equiv.) as the oxidizing agent under an O2-atmosphere in 50% yield. The crystal structure of 6 reveals an ionic and di-nuclear benzoate species composed of a cationic moiety formulated as [(C83CBiIBTP)Co2(O2CC6H5)2]+ and a counterbalanced perchlorate anion, and both metal atoms are attributed to hexa-coordinated cobalt ions with varied coordination environments. Catalysis results of CO2/epoxide copolymerization indicated that complex 1 was more efficient than 2-6 where compound 6 was shown to be the least active. Co complex 1 incorporating benzoate coligands was demonstrated to effectively catalyze the CO2-copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO), 4-vinyl-1,2-cyclohexene oxide or cyclopentene oxide, producing the associated CO2-based polycarbonates with >99% carbonate repeated units under optimal conditions. Not only the controllable character of complex 1 for CO2/CHO copolymerization is enabled, but also 1 has been shown to catalyze such a copolymerization in the "immortal" manner. Using the same di-cobalt catalyst in combination with excess ratios of neopentyl glycol (up to 150 equiv.) as the chain transfer agent could give low molecular weight poly(cyclohexene carbonate) polyols with monomodal molecular weight distributions. This work offers the facilely prepared di-nuclear cobalt complexes as catalysts for the efficient catalysis of CO2-copolymerization.

Abstract
CO2 is an important by-product in epoxides synthesis, accounting for 0.02% of worldwide greenhouse emissions. The CO2 cycloaddition to ethylene and propylene oxides is an important class of reactions due to the versatile nature of the corresponding organic carbonates as chemical feedstocks. We report that these reactions can be catalyzed by ZIF-8 (Zeolitic Imidazole Framework-8) in the absence of solvent or co-catalyst and in mild conditions (40 °C and 750 mbar). In situ infrared spectroscopy places the onset time for ethylene and propylene carbonate formation to 80 and 30 min, respectively. Although there is low catalytic activity, these findings suggest the possibility to cut the CO2 emissions from epoxides production through their direct conversion to these highly valuable chemical intermediates, eliminating de facto energetically demanding steps as the CO2 capture and storage.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is becoming more attractive as a renewable feedstock for chemical synthesis. In this study, CO2 was incorporated into poly(ether carbonate) (PEC) polyols by using a double-metal-cyanide catalyst. By adjusting the CO2 pressure, the content of propylene carbonate units in the PEC polyols was controlled, indicating successful and semiquantitative incorporation of CO2 into the PEC polyols. Polyurethane foams (PUFs) with different propylene carbonate content were easily prepared at room temperature by employing the PEC polyols due to their adequate viscosity under ambient conditions. The firmness of the PUFs increased as the amount of propylene carbonate units increased due to the rigidity of the carbonate linkage, representing predictable mechanical properties. Interestingly, reduced generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the PUFs, namely acetaldehyde, was observed with a high content of propylene carbonate units at 120 °C, indicating good stability of the carbonate units against thermo-oxidative decomposition. This study demonstrates the importance of CO2 as an environmental-friendly and renewable resource that can provide not only industrially important but also problem-solving products in terms of processability and low generation of VOCs.
