Abstract
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles have found remarkable applications in natural product research, material sciences, and pharmaceuticals. Although the synthesis of this interesting class of compounds attracted the interest of generations of organic chemists, simple and straightforward assembly methods based on transition-metal catalysis have regularly been elusive. The recent advancements in the development of C-H functionalization have helped in accomplishing the synthesis of a variety of complex heterocycles from simple precursors. This Focus Review summarizes the recent advances in one particular field: the copper-catalyzed C-N bond formation reactions via C-H bond functionalization to furnish a comprehensive range of nitrogen heterocycles. Applicability and synthetic feasibility of a particular reaction represent major requirements for the inclusion in this review.

Using the widely available DMSO as the formylation reagent under oxidative conditions, an efficient Cu-catalyzed C3-formylation reaction of imidazo [1,2-a]pyridine C–H bonds to directly generate structurally sophisticated 3-formyl imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives has been developed.

A cobalt zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) was successfully synthesized and characterized, then used as an efficient catalyst in a reaction to form quinazoline products. ZIF-67 could be recovered and reused several times without significant degradation in its activity.

Abstract
The palladium catalytic system was first applied to 2-arylquinazoline synthesis via hydrogen transfer methodology. Various (E)-2-nitrobenzaldehyde O-methyl oximes reacted easily with alcohols or benzyl amines to provide N-heterocyclic compounds in good to high yields. Similarly, the heterocyclic products could be prepared by the reaction of 1-(2-nitrophenyl)ethanone, urea and benzyl alcohols. In these reactions, the nitro group was reduced in situ by hydrogen generated from the alcohol dehydrogenation step.
