Abstract
A sinusoidal modulation scheme is described for selective heteronuclear polarization transfer between two dilute spins in double cross polarization magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. During the second N→C cross polarization, the (13)C RF amplitude is modulated sinusoidally while the (15)N RF amplitude is tangent. This modulation induces an effective spin-lock field in two selective frequency bands in either side of the (13)C RF carrier frequency, allowing for simultaneous polarization transfers from (15)N to (13)C in those two selective frequency bands. It is shown by experiments and simulations that this sinusoidal modulation allows one to selectively polarize from (15)N to its covalently bonded (13)Cα and (13)C' carbons in neighboring peptide planes simultaneously, which is useful for establishing the backbone connectivity between two sequential residues in protein structural elucidation. The selectivity and efficiency were experimentally demonstrated on a uniformly (13)C,(15)N-labeled β1 immunoglobulin binding domain of protein G (GB1).

Abstract
We present a new and highly efficient approach for heteronuclear coherence transfer in solid-state NMR spectroscopy under high-speed spinning conditions. The so-called (RESPIRATION)CP experiment exploits phase-alternated recoupling on only one of the two rf channels intertwined in a synchronized train of short rf pulses on both channels. The method provides significantly higher efficiencies than state-of-the art techniques including ramped and adiabatic cross-polarization experiments with long durations of intense rf irradiation. At the same time, it is easier to setup experimentally and significantly more robust toward imperfections such as rf inhomogeneity, misadjustments, and sample-induced variations in the rf tuning. The method is described analytically, numerically, and experimentally for biological solids. We demonstrate sensitivity gains of factors of 1.3 and 1.8 for typical (1)H→(15)N and (15)N→(13)C transfers and a combined gain of a factor of 2-4 for a typical NCA experiment for biological solid-state NMR.

Abstract
This article describes the use of an alternative expansion scheme called Floquet-Magnus expansion (FME) to study the dynamics of spin system in solid-state NMR. The main tool used to describe the effect of time-dependent interactions in NMR is the average Hamiltonian theory (AHT). However, some NMR experiments, such as sample rotation and pulse crafting, seem to be more conveniently described using the Floquet theory (FT). Here, we present the first report highlighting the basics of the Floquet-Magnus expansion (FME) scheme and hint at its application on recoupling sequences that excite more efficiently double-quantum coherences, namely BABA and C7 radiofrequency pulse sequences. The use of Λ(n)(t) functions available only in the FME scheme, allows the comparison of the efficiency of BABA and C7 sequences.

Abstract
Generating dipolar order under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions is explored for different pulse sequences and dipolar-coupling networks. It is shown that under MAS second-order dipolar order can be generated reliably with 10% to 30% efficiency using the Jeener-Broekaert sequence in systems where the second-order average Hamiltonian is a (near) constant of the motion. When using adiabatic demagnetization and remagnetization, second-order dipolar order can be generated and reverted back to Zeeman order with up to 60% efficiency. This requires a maximum field strength with a nutation frequency that is less than one-quarter of the rotor frequency, and that the spin system can be properly spinlocked under such conditions. A simple coherent description accounts for the principal features of the spin dynamics, even using the smallest possible system of three coupled spins. For the systems investigated, the lifetime of second-order dipolar order under MAS was found to be on the order of T(1).

Abstract
In the context of nanomedicine, liposils (liposomes and silica) have a strong potential for drug storage and release schemes: such materials combine the intrinsic properties of liposome (encapsulation) and silica (increased rigidity, protective coating, pH degradability). In this work, an original approach combining solid state NMR, molecular dynamics, first principles geometry optimization, and NMR parameters calculation allows the building of a precise representation of the organic/inorganic interface in liposils. {(1)H-(29)Si}(1)H and {(1)H-(31)P}(1)H Double Cross-Polarization (CP) MAS NMR experiments were implemented in order to explore the proton chemical environments around the silica and the phospholipids, respectively. Using VASP (Vienna Ab Initio Simulation Package), DFT calculations including molecular dynamics, and geometry optimization lead to the determination of energetically favorable configurations of a DPPC (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) headgroup adsorbed onto a hydroxylated silica surface that corresponds to a realistic model of an amorphous silica slab. These data combined with first principles NMR parameters calculations by GIPAW (Gauge Included Projected Augmented Wave) show that the phosphate moieties are not directly interacting with silanols. The stabilization of the interface is achieved through the presence of water molecules located in-between the head groups of the phospholipids and the silica surface forming an interfacial H-bonded water layer. A detailed study of the (31)P chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) parameters allows us to interpret the local dynamics of DPPC in liposils. Finally, the VASP/solid state NMR/GIPAW combined approach can be extended to a large variety of organic-inorganic hybrid interfaces.

Abstract
We propose a new broadband second-order proton-assisted (13)C-(13)C correlation experiment, SHANGHAI. The (13)C-(13)C magnetization transfer is promoted by (1)H irradiation with interspersed four phases super-cycling. This through-space homo-nuclear sequence only irradiates on the proton channel during the mixing time. SHANGHAI benefits from a large number of modulation sidebands, hence leading to a large robustness with respect to chemical shift differences, which permits its use in a broad MAS frequency range. At ultra-fast MAS (ν(R) 60 kHz), SHANGHAI is only efficient when the amplitude of (1)H recoupling rf-field is close to half the spinning speed (ν(1) ≈ ν(R)/2). However, at moderate to fast MAS (ν(R)=20-35 kHz), SHANGHAI is efficient at any rf-power level larger than ν(1) ≈ 10 kHz, which simultaneously permits avoiding excessive heating of bio-molecules, and using large sample volumes. We show that SHANGHAI can be employed at the very high magnetic field of 23.5 T and then allows the observation of correlation between (13)C nuclei, even if their resonance frequencies differ by more than 38 kHz.

Abstract
The paper describes two-dimensional solid state NMR experiments that use powdered dephased antiphase coherence (γ preparation) to encode chemical shifts in the indirect dimension. Both components of this chemical shift encoded gamma-prepared states can be refocused into inphase coherence by a recoupling element. This helps to achieve sensitivity enhancement in 2D NMR experiments by quadrature detection. The powder dependence of the gamma-prepared states allows for manipulating them by suitable insertion of delays in the recoupling periods. This helps to design experiments that suppress diagonal peaks in 2D spectra, leading to improved resolution. We describe some new phase modulated heteronuclear and homonuclear recoupling pulse sequences that simplify the implementation of the described experiments based on γ prepared states. Recoupling in the heteronuclear spin system is achieved by matching the difference in the amplitude of the sine/cosine modulated phase on the two rf-channels to the spinning frequency while maintaining the same power on the two rf-channels.

Abstract
Recent progress in multi-dimensional solid-state NMR correlation spectroscopy at high static magnetic fields and ultra-fast magic-angle spinning is discussed. A focus of the review is on applications to protein resonance assignment and structure determination as well as on the characterization of protein dynamics in the solid state. First, the consequences of ultra-fast spinning on sensitivity and sample heating are considered. Recoupling and decoupling techniques at ultra-fast MAS are then presented, as well as more complex experiments assembled from these basic building blocks. Furthermore, we discuss new avenues in biomolecular solid-state NMR spectroscopy that become feasible in the ultra-fast spinning regime, such as sensitivity enhancement based on paramagnetic doping, and the prospect of direct proton detection.

Abstract
We demonstrate the estimation of homonuclear dipolar couplings, and thereby internuclear distances, between half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei by central-transition (CT) double-quantum (2Q) sideband nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is shown that the rotor-encoded sideband amplitudes from CT 2Q coherences in the indirect dimension of the two-dimensional NMR spectrum are sensitive probes of the magnitude of the homonuclear dipolar coupling, but are significantly less affected by other NMR parameters such as the magnitudes and orientations of the electric field gradient tensors. Experimental results of employing the [Formula: see text] recoupling sequence to the 11B spin pair of bis(catecholato)diboron resulted in an estimation of the internuclear B–B distance as (169.6 ± 3) pm, i.e., with a relative uncertainty of ±2%, and in excellent agreement with the distance of 167.8 pm determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
We describe a theoretical framework for understanding the heteronuclear version of the third spin assisted recoupling polarization transfer mechanism and demonstrate its potential for detecting long-distance intramolecular and intermolecular (15)N-(13)C contacts in biomolecular systems. The pulse sequence, proton assisted insensitive nuclei cross polarization (PAIN-CP) relies on a cross term between (1)H-(15)N and (1)H-(13)C dipolar couplings to mediate zero- and∕or double-quantum (15)N-(13)C recoupling. In particular, using average Hamiltonian theory we derive effective Hamiltonians for PAIN-CP and show that the transfer is mediated by trilinear terms of the form N(±)C(∓)H(z) (ZQ) or N(±)C(±)H(z) (DQ) depending on the rf field strengths employed. We use analytical and numerical simulations to explain the structure of the PAIN-CP optimization maps and to delineate the appropriate matching conditions. We also detail the dependence of the PAIN-CP polarization transfer with respect to local molecular geometry and explain the observed reduction in dipolar truncation. In addition, we demonstrate the utility of PAIN-CP in structural studies with (15)N-(13)C spectra of two uniformly (13)C,(15)N labeled model microcrystalline proteins-GB1, a 56 amino acid peptide, and Crh, a 85 amino acid domain swapped dimer (MW=2×10.4 kDa). The spectra acquired at high magic angle spinning frequencies (ω(r)∕2π>20 kHz) and magnetic fields (ω(0H)∕2π=700-900 MHz) using moderate rf fields, yield multiple long-distance intramonomer and intermonomer (15)N-(13)C contacts. We use these distance restraints, in combination with the available x-ray structure as a homology model, to perform a calculation of the monomer subunit of the Crh protein.

Abstract
We present a Floquet theory approach for the analysis of homonuclear recoupling assisted by radio frequency (RF) irradiation of surrounding heteronuclear spins. This description covers a broad range of systems from fully protonated to deuterated proteins, focusing in detail on recoupling via protons and deuterons separately as well as simultaneously by the double nucleus enhanced recoupling (DONER) scheme. The theoretical description, supported by numerical simulations and compared to experimental results from a partially deuterated model compound, indicates that in perdeuterated systems setting the RF amplitude equal to the magic angle spinning (MAS) frequency is not necessarily optimal for recoupling via (1)H and/or (2)H nuclei and modified recoupling conditions are identified.

Abstract
Magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR becomes an increasingly important tool for the determination of structures of membrane proteins and amyloid fibrils. Extensive deuteration of the protein allows multidimensional experiments with exceptionally high sensitivity and resolution to be obtained. Here we present an experimental strategy to measure highly unambiguous spatial correlations for distances up to 13 Å. Two complementary three-dimensional experiments, or alternatively a four-dimensional experiment, yield highly unambiguous cross-peak assignments, which rely on four encoded chemical shift dimensions. Correlations to residual aliphatic protons are accessible via synchronous evolution of the (15)N and (13)C chemical shifts, which encode valuable amide-methyl distance restraints. On average, we obtain six restraints per residue. Importantly, 50% of all restraints correspond to long-range distances between residues i and j with |i - j| > 5, which are of particular importance in structure calculations. Using ARIA, we calculate a high-resolution structure for the microcrystalline 7.2 kDa α-spectrin SH3 domain with a backbone precision of ∼1.1 Å.

Abstract
This review discusses the solid-state NMR techniques developed for the study of amyloid fibrils. Literature up to the end of 2010 has been surveyed and the materials are organized according to five categories, viz. homonuclear dipolar recoupling and polarization transfer via J-coupling, heteronuclear dipolar recoupling, correlation spectroscopy, recoupling of chemical shift anisotropy, and tensor correlation. Our emphasis is on the NMR techniques and their practical aspects. The biological implications of the results obtained for amyloid fibrils are only briefly discussed. Our main objective is to showcase the power of NMR in the study of biological unoriented solids.

Abstract
Zero-quantum coherence generation and reconversion in magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR is analyzed. Two methods are discussed based on implementations using symmetry-based pulse sequences that utilize either isotropic J couplings or dipolar couplings. In either case, the decoupling of abundant proton spins plays a crucial role for the efficiency of the zero-quantum generation. We present optimized sequences for measuring zero-quantum single-quantum correlation spectra in solids, achieving an efficiency of 50% in ubiquitin. The advantages and disadvantages of zero-quantum single-quantum over single-quantum single-quantum correlation spectroscopy are explored, and similarities and differences with double-quantum single-quantum correlation spectroscopy are discussed. Finally, possible application of zero-quantum single-quantum experiments to polypeptides, where it can lead to better spectral resolution is investigated using ubiquitin, where we find high efficiency and high selectivity, but also increased line widths in the MQ dimension.

Abstract
We show that the S-RESPDOR NMR method can be used to measure distances between spin-1/2 and half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, and that a general analytical formula describes its dephasing curve for all spin values. We demonstrate the method on the C4-O4 spin pair of L-tyrosine·HCl, with 13C natural abundance and 30% 17O enrichment, using a moderate magnetic field (9.4 T), a moderate 17O rf-field (40 kHz) and a fast spinning speed (22 kHz). It is shown that S-RESPDOR is much more robust and accurate than previous methods.

Abstract
High static magnetic fields and very fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) promise to improve resolution and sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments. The fast MAS regime has permitted the development of low-power cross-polarization schemes, such as second-order cross-polarization (SOCP), which prevent heat deposition in the sample. Those schemes are however limited in bandwidth, as weak radio-frequency (RF) fields only cover a small chemical shift range for rare nuclei (e.g. (13)C). Another consideration is that the efficiency of cross-polarization is very sensitive to magnetization decay that occurs during the spin-lock pulse on the abundant nuclei (e.g. (1)H). Having characterized this decay in glutamine at 60 kHz MAS, we propose two complementary strategies to tailor cross-polarization to desired spectral regions at low RF power. In the case of multiple sites with small chemical shift dispersion, a larger bandwidth for SOCP is obtained by slightly increasing the RF power while avoiding recoupling conditions that lead to fast spin-lock decay. In the case of two spectral regions with large chemical shift offset, an extension of the existing low-power schemes, called MOD-CP, is introduced. It consists of a spin-lock on (1)H and an amplitude-modulated spin-lock on the rare nucleus. The range of excited chemical shifts is assessed by experimental excitation profiles and numerical simulation of an I(2)S spin system. All SOCP-based schemes exhibit higher sensitivity than high-power CP schemes, as demonstrated on solid (glutamine) and semi-solid (hydrated, micro-crystalline ubiquitin) samples.

Abstract
A Symmetry-based Resonance-Echo DOuble-Resonance (S-REDOR) method is proposed for measuring hetero-nuclear dipolar couplings between two different spin-1/2 nuclei, under fast magic-angle spinning. The hetero-nuclear dipolar couplings are restored by employing the SR4 sequence, which requires the rf-field strength to be only twice the spinning frequency. The S-REDOR experiment is extended to S-RESPDOR (Symmetry-based Resonance-Echo Saturation-Pulse DOuble-Resonance) for determining dipolar coupling between a spin-1/2 nucleus (e.g.(13)C) and (14)N. It is demonstrated that S-REDOR and S-RESPDOR methods suppress efficiently the homo-nuclear dipolar interaction of the irradiated nucleus and benefit from high robustness to the rf-field inhomogeneity, chemical shielding and dipolar truncation. Therefore, these methods allow the measurement of (13)C/(14,15)N distances, with (13)C observation, in uniformly (13)C-labeled samples. Furthermore, we provide analytical solutions for the S-REDOR and S-RESPDOR dephasing curves. These solutions facilitate the measurement of hetero-nuclear distances from experimental data.

Abstract
We present a novel solid-state NMR method for heteronuclear dipolar recoupling without decoupling. The method, which introduces the concept of exponentially modulated rf fields, provides efficient broadband recoupling with large flexibility with respect to hetero- or homonuclear applications, sample spinning frequency, and operation without the need for high-power (1)H decoupling. For previous methods, the latter has been a severe source of sample heating which may cause detoriation of costly samples. The so-called EXPonentially mOdulated Recoupling Technique (EXPORT) is described analytically and numerically, and demonstrated experimentally by 1D (13)C spectra and 2D (13)C-(15)N correlation spectra of (13)C,(15)N-labeled samples of GB1, ubiquitin, and fibrils of the SNNFGAILSS fragment of amylin. Through its flexible operation, robustness, and strong performance, it is anticipated that EXPORT will find immediate application for both hetero- and homonuclear dipolar recoupling in solid-state NMR of (13)C,(15)N-labeled proteins and compounds of relevance in chemistry.

Abstract
This article reviews the application of operator-based Floquet theory in solid-state NMR. Basic expressions for calculating effective Hamiltonians based on van Vleck perturbation theory are reviewed for problems with a single frequency or multiple incommensurate frequencies. Such a treatment allows calculation of effective Hamiltonians for resonant and non-resonant problems. Examples from literature are given for single-mode to triple-mode Floquet problems, covering a wide range of applications in solid-state NMR under magic-angle spinning and radio-frequency irradiation of a single nucleus or multiple nuclei.

Abstract
Three two-dimensional (2D) NMR homonuclear correlation techniques invoking double-quantum (2Q) filtration of the central transitions of half-integer spins are evaluated numerically and experimentally. They correlate directly detected single-quantum (1Q) coherences in the t(2) domain with either of 1Q, two-spin 2Q or single-spin multiple-quantum coherence-evolutions in the indirect (t(1)) dimension. We employ experimental (23)Na and (27)Al NMR on sodium sulfite and the natural mineral sillimanite (SiAl(2)O(5)), in conjunction with simulated 2D spectra from pairs of dipolar-recoupled spins-3/2 and 5/2 at different external magnetic fields, to compare the correlation strategies from the viewpoints of 2D spectral resolution, signal sensitivity, implementational aspects and their relative merits for establishing internuclear proximities and quadrupolar tensor orientations.

Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate that Homonuclear Rotary Resonance Recoupling (HORROR) can be used to reintroduce carbonyl-carbonyl interresidue dipolar interactions and to achieve efficient polarization transfer between carbonyl atoms in uniformly (13)C,(15)N-labeled peptides and proteins. We show that the HORROR condition is anisotropically broadened and overall shifted to higher radio frequency intensities because of the CSA effects. These effects are analyzed theoretically using Average Hamiltonian Theory. At spinning frequencies used in this study, 22kHz, this broadening is experimentally found to be on the order of a kilohertz at a proton field of 600MHz. To match HORROR condition over all powder orientations, variable amplitude radio frequency (RF) fields are required, and efficient direct transfers on the order of 20-30% can be straightforwardly established. Two- and three-dimensional chemical shift correlation experiments establishing long-range interresidue connectivities (e.g., (N[i]-CO[i-2])) are demonstrated on the model peptide N-acetyl-valine-leucine, and on the third immunoglobulin binding domain of protein G. Possible future developments are discussed.

Abstract
We describe dipolar recoupling methods that accomplish, at high magic-angle spinning (MAS) frequencies, the excitation of double-quantum (DQ) coherences between spin-1/2 nuclei. We employ rotor-synchronized symmetry-based pulse sequences which are either gamma-encoded or non-gamma-encoded. The sensitivity and the robustness to both chemical-shift anisotropy and offset are examined. We also compare different techniques to avoid signal folding in the indirect dimension of two-dimensional double-quantum<-->single-quantum (DQ-SQ) spectra. This comprehensive analysis results in the identification of satisfactory conditions for dipolar (19)F-(19)F recoupling at high magnetic fields and high MAS frequencies. The utility of these recoupling methods is demonstrated with high-resolution DQ-SQ NMR spectra, which allow probing (19)F-(19)F proximities in powered fluoroaluminates.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive comparison of through-space heteronuclear correlation techniques for solid state NMR, combining indirect detection and single-channel recoupling method. These techniques, named D-HMQC and D-HSQC, do not suffer from dipolar truncation and can be employed to correlate quadrupolar nuclei with spin-1/2 nuclei. The heteronuclear dipolar couplings are restored under magic-angle spinning by applying supercycled symmetry-based pulse sequences (SR412) or simultaneous frequency and amplitude modulation (SFAM). The average Hamiltonian theory (AHT) of these recoupling methods is developed. These results are applied to analyze the performances of D-HMQC and D-HSQC sequences. It is shown that, whatever the magnitude of spin interations, D-HMQC experiment offers larger efficiency and higher robustness than D-HSQC. Furthermore, the spectral resolution in both dimensions of proton detected two-dimensional D-HMQC and D-HSQC spectra can be enhanced by applying recently introduced symmetry-based homonuclear dipolar decoupling schemes that cause a z-rotation of the spins. This is demonstrated by 1H-13C and 1H-23Na correlation experiments on l-histidine and NaH2PO4, respectively. The two-dimensional heteronuclear 1H-23Na correlation spectrum yields the assignment of 23Na resonances of NaH2PO4. This assignment is corroborated by first-principles calculations.

Abstract
In solid-state NMR magic angle spinning is often used to remove line broadening associated with anisotropic interactions, such as chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar couplings. Dipolar recoupling refers to sequences of pulses designed to reintroduce dipolar interactions that are otherwise averaged by magic angle spinning. One of the key applications of homonuclear (and heteronuclear) dipolar recoupling is for the purpose of protein structure determination. Recoupling experiments, originally designed for applications in spin-pair labeled samples, have been revised in recent years for applications in samples with extensive or uniform incorporation of isotopic labels. In these samples multiple internuclear distances can in principle be probed simultaneously, but the dipolar truncation effects (i.e. attenuation of the effects of weak couplings by strong ones) circumvent such measurements. In this article we review some of the recent developments in homonuclear recoupling methods that allow overcoming this problem.

Abstract
We introduce an original pulse sequence, BR2(2)(1)(taupitau), which is a block super-cycled R2(2)(1) sequence employing as basic element a pi pulse sandwiched by 'window' intervals. This homonuclear dipolar recoupling method allows the efficient excitation of double-quantum coherences between spin-1/2 nuclei submitted to very large chemical shift anisotropy. We demonstrate that this technique can be employed in double-quantum<-->single-quantum (31)P homonuclear correlation experiment at high magnetic field (B(0)>or=14 T) and high MAS frequencies (nu(R)>or=30 kHz). The performances of BR2(2)(1)(taupitau) are compared to those of the double-quantum recoupling methods, such as BABA and bracketed fp-RFDR, which were already employed at fast MAS rates. The BR2(2)(1)(taupitau) sequence displays a higher robustness to CSA and offset than the other existing techniques.

Abstract
An experimental method for the heteronuclear dipolar recoupling of half-integer quadrupole nuclei is proposed. The idea is to manipulate the central transition based on the recoupling technique of spin-polarization-inversion rotary resonance. This method allows the extraction of structural parameters under fast magic-angle spinning. Its validity has been examined by the average Hamiltonian theory and numerical simulations. The initial rotational-echo dephasing arising from the dipolar evolution can be approximated by a parabolic function, from which the heteronuclear van Vleck second moment can be estimated. A factor, estimated from two-spin simulations, is required to account for the effects of the quadrupolar coupling and is rather independent of the geometry and the orders of the spin systems. Our method can facilitate the structural characterization of materials containing half-integer quadrupole nuclei under high-resolution condition. Experimental verification has been carried out on two aluminophosphate systems, namely, AlPO(4)-5 and AlPO(4)-11.

Abstract
We present a new application of the R2(2)(1) symmetry-based dipolar recoupling scheme, for exciting directly double-quantum (2Q) coherences between the central transition of homonuclear half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. With respect to previously published 2Q-recoupling methods (M. Eden, D. Zhou, J. Yu, Chem. Phys. Lett. 431 (2006) 397), the R2(2)(1) sequence is used without pi/2 bracketing pulses and with an original super-cycling. This leads to an improved efficiency (a factor of two for spin-5/2) and to a much higher robustness to radio-frequency field inhomogeneity and resonance offset. The 2Q-coherence excitation performances are demonstrated experimentally by (27)Al NMR experiments on the aluminophosphates berlinite, VPI5, AlPO(4)-14, and AlPO(4)-CJ3. The two-dimensional 2Q-1Q correlation experiments incorporating these recoupling sequences allow the observation of 2Q cross-peaks between central transitions, even at high magnetic field where the difference in offset between octahedral and tetrahedral (27)Al sites exceeds 10 kHz.

Abstract
Using average Hamiltonian (AH) theory, we analyze recently introduced homonuclear dipolar recoupling pulse sequences for exciting central-transition double-quantum coherences (2QC) between half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei undergoing magic-angle-spinning. Several previously observed differences among the recoupling schemes concerning their compensation to resonance offsets and radio-frequency (rf) inhomogeneity may qualitatively be rationalized by an AH analysis up to third perturbation order, despite its omission of first-order quadrupolar interactions. General aspects of the engineering of 2Q-recoupling pulse sequences applicable to half-integer spins are discussed, emphasizing the improvements offered from a diversity of supercycles providing enhanced suppression of undesirable AH cross-terms between resonance offsets and rf amplitude errors.

Abstract
We review recent advances in solid state NMR methodology for recovering homonuclear dipolar interactions among half-integer quadrupolar spins undergoing sample rotation. Existing dipolar recoupling techniques are contrasted, based on (i) the form of their associated dipolar Hamiltonian, (ii) the different experimental conditions necessitating their realization and (iii) their roles as components in multi-dimensional NMR correlation spectroscopy. Various types of structural information accessible from such solid state NMR experimentation is reviewed. Promises and limitations of methodologies targeting homonuclear dipolar couplings between half-integer spins under high-resolution conditions are discussed, with particular focus on the demands set for structural investigations of crystalline as well as structurally disordered (amorphous) inorganic network materials.

Abstract
We demonstrate that heteronuclear decoupling using a Phase-Inverted Supercycled Sequence for Attenuation of Rotary ResOnance (PISSARRO) is very efficient at high spinning frequencies (nu(rot)=60kHz) and high magnetic fields (900MHz for protons at 21T) even with moderate radio-frequency decoupling amplitudes (nu(1)(I)=15kHz), despite the wide range of isotropic chemical shifts of the protons and the increased effect of their chemical shift anisotropy.

Abstract
The use of side chain methyl (13)C chemical shifts for the determination of the rotameric conformation of Val and Leu residues in proteins by solid-state NMR spectroscopy is described. Examination of the solution NMR stereospecifically assigned methyl groups shows significant correlation between the difference in the two methyl carbons' chemical shifts and the side chain conformation. It is found that alpha-helical and beta-sheet backbones cause different side chain methyl chemical shift trends. In alpha-helical Leu's, a relatively large absolute methyl (13)C shift difference of 2.89 ppm is found for the most populated mt rotamer (chi(1) = -60 degrees, chi(2) = 180 degrees), while a much smaller value of 0.73 ppm is found for the next populated tp rotamer (chi(1) = 180 degrees, chi(2) = 60 degrees). For alpha-helical Val residues, the dominant t rotamer (chi(1) = 180 degrees) has more downfield Cgamma2 chemical shifts than Cgamma1 by 1.71 ppm, while the next populated m rotamer (chi(1) = -60 degrees) shows the opposite trend of more downfield Cgamma1 chemical shift by 1.23 ppm. These significantly different methyl (13)C chemical shifts exist despite the likelihood of partial rotameric averaging at ambient temperature. We show that these conformation-dependent methyl (13)C chemical shifts can be utilized for side chain structure determination once the methyl (13)C resonances are accurately measured by double-quantum (DQ) filtered 2D correlation experiments, most notably the dipolar DQ to single-quantum (SQ) correlation technique. The advantage of the DQ-SQ correlation experiment over simple 2D SQ-SQ correlation experiments is demonstrated on the transmembrane peptide of the influenza A M2 proton channel. The methyl chemical shifts led to predictions of the side chain rotameric states for several Val and Leu residues in this tetrameric helical bundle. The predicted Val rotamers were further verified by dipolar correlation experiments that directly measure the chi(1) torsion angles. It was found that the chemical-shift-predicted side chain conformations are fully consistent with the direct torsion angle results; moreover, the methyl (13)C chemical shifts are sensitive to approximately 5 degrees changes in the chi(1) torsion angle due to drug binding.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (1)H homonuclear correlation NMR spectra of solids of biological interest have been recorded at high magnetic fields (14.1 and 18.8 T) and MAS rates up to 67 kHz, using RN(n)(nu) symmetry-based homonuclear recoupling and CRAMPS decoupling; this method affords exceptional spectral resolution and is well suited to probe (1)H-(1)H proximities in powdered solids.

Abstract
Quantitative solid-state NMR distance measurements in strongly coupled spin systems are often complicated due to the simultaneous presence of multiple noncommuting spin interactions. In the case of zeroth-order homonuclear dipolar recoupling experiments, the recoupled dipolar interaction between distant spins is attenuated by the presence of stronger couplings to nearby spins, an effect known as dipolar truncation. In this article, we quantitatively investigate the effect of dipolar truncation on the polarization-transfer efficiency of various homonuclear recoupling experiments with analytical theory, numerical simulations, and experiments. In particular, using selectively (13)C-labeled tripeptides, we compare the extent of dipolar truncation in model three-spin systems encountered in protein samples produced with uniform and alternating labeling. Our observations indicate that while the extent of dipolar truncation decreases in the absence of directly bonded nuclei, two-bond dipolar couplings can generate significant dipolar truncation of small, long-range couplings. Therefore, while alternating labeling alleviates the effects of dipolar truncation, and thus facilitates the application of recoupling experiments to large spin systems, it does not represent a complete solution to this outstanding problem.
