Body composition changes with aging: the cause or the result of alterations in metabolic rate and macronutrient oxidation?

It has been well documented that as individuals age, body composition changes, even in the absence of changes in body weight. Studies have shown that fat mass increases and muscle mass decreases with age. However, it is unclear why such changes occur. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and substrate oxidation rates have been examined with aging. It has been proposed that reductions in RMR and fat oxidation may lead to changes in body composition. Alternatively, changes in body composition with aging may lead to reductions in RMR. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the literature surrounding the impact of aging on RMR and substrate oxidation. Although long-term longitudinal studies are lacking, most cross-sectional studies or short-term longitudinal studies show a reduction in RMR with aging that cannot be explained by changes in body composition including loss in fat-free mass, where the latter includes atrophy or decreases in the mass of high metabolic rate organs. There is indirect evidence suggesting that the metabolic rate of individual organs is lower in older compared with younger individuals. With aging, we conclude that reductions in the mass of individual organs/tissues and in tissue-specific organ metabolic rate contribute to a reduction in RMR that in turn promotes changes in body composition favoring increased fat mass and reduced fat-free mass.

Rationale, design, and profiles of the New Integrated Suburban Seniority Investigation (NISSIN) Project: a study of an age-specific, community-based cohort of Japanese elderly

Background

Although there have been many studies on aging in a number of developed countries, data on the effects of aging during early senescence are scarce. We designed a study to investigate an age-specific cohort in a suburban Japanese city to determine the factors that contribute to living long and well.

Methods

In every year from 1996 through 2005, residents of Nissin City, Japan who were about to reach the age of 65 years participated in health check-ups and completed a baseline self-administered questionnaire that included items on demographic and lifestyle characteristics, physical function, and quality of life. When the participants reached 70 years of age, they underwent secondary health check-ups at the same site, or received home visits from public health nurses, and their health-related outcomes were noted.

Results

A total of 3073 64-year-olds were enrolled in the study (response rate, 43.9%). There was considerable intersexual variation in demographic and lifestyle factors. Among men and women, 24.3% and 3.0% were current smokers, respectively, and 68.7% and 19.5% were current alcohol drinkers. Cohort members were in slightly better physical condition than the Japanese general population: they were less likely to be obese and hypertensive and more likely to have 20 teeth or more. Follow-up of the cohort is ongoing.

Conclusions

We have established a unique age-specific cohort with a consecutive entry–exit system. This project should provide data on early changes in health and related factors in this new era of longevity.

Metabolic ageing in individual zebra finches

Oxidative stress is suggested as a contributor to the ageing process. Knowledge of the relationship between age and energy expenditure may contribute to our understanding of ageing patterns, due to the link between oxygen consumption and free radical production. However, studies on basal metabolic rate (BMR) and age have generally been cross-sectional, which may confound estimates of the age effect due to disproportionate mortality (also known as 'selective disappearance'). We therefore performed a longitudinal study of BMR using captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) up to 5 years of age. BMR declined with age in individuals of both sexes when body mass was controlled for. Males gained mass with age while females did not. There was no evidence for disproportionate mortality with respect to BMR in either sex. To our knowledge, this is the first longitudinal study of avian BMR over such a long proportion of the lifespan of the study species.
