Abstract
Background Throughout the world, women report poorer self-assessed health than men. In Sweden, women’s life circumstances have changed on many levels during the past decades. While cognition and bodily health have improved, mental health has deteriorated. During the 1980s and 1990s, Swedish women’s self-rated health was deteriorating with an increase of psychosomatic diseases. Common mental disorders have increased most rapidly and contributed to an increase in sick leaves. Purpose The aim of this study was to study secular trends in self-assessed health in SF-36, in three different cohorts of women examined in 1992–1993, 2000–2001, 2004–2006 and 2016–2017. Participants and Methods Data from the Population Study of Women in Gothenburg were used where 38-, 50-, 70- and 75-year-old women had responded to SF-36 over a period of 24 years. SF-36 is a questionnaire concerning self-assessed health that consists of eight different subcategories, ie, four about physical health and four about mental health. This study made a comparison between the different results in SF-36 during 24 years. Results Results showed that today’s 38-year-old women had poorer self-rated health in four subcategories, social functioning (SF), mental health (MH), vitality (VT) and general health (GH), compared to 24 years ago. Fifty-year-old women rated their health better in one subcategory, physical functioning (PF), and worse in another subcategory, VT. Seventy-year-old women rated their health better in two subcategories, physical role (RP) and emotional role (RE). Conclusion This study indicates that poor mental health is increasing among middle-aged women and that increased mental stress levels can be an underlying factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Operative treatment of calcaneal fractures using the extensile lateral approach is associated with high rates of soft tissue complications. In the past years, there has been a trend toward less invasive surgical approaches. Percutaneous and arthroscopically assisted calcaneal osteosynthesis (PACO) combines the advantages of visualization of the posterior facet of the subtalar joint with a minimally invasive approach. METHODS We conducted a follow-up of 25 patients with 26 calcaneal fractures (Sanders II and III), treated with PACO with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. The median age was 44 years (range, 21-72) and the follow-up period 15 months (12-33). Our clinical outcomes were the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOxFQ), the Calcaneus Fracture Scoring System (CFSS), the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot score, the Short-Form-36 (SF-36), the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, and the number of complications. Radiographs on follow-up were obtained to evaluate the reduction of the fractures as well as osteoarthritis of the subtalar joint. RESULTS The median MOxFQ score was 26.6 (0-76.6), the CFSS score 85 (26-100), and the AOFAS score 85 (50-100). The VAS pain score was 0 (0-5.7) at rest and 4.1 (0-8.2) during activity. The Böhler angle improved from a mean (SD) of 3.5 (12.3) degrees preoperatively to 27.7 (10.5) degrees postoperatively. The follow-up radiographs showed subsidence of the fractures and a Böhler angle of 20.3 (12.9) degrees. There were no wound-healing complications. Two patients had additional surgery with screw removal due to prominent hardware. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that PACO gives good clinical outcomes and a low risk of complications in selected calcaneal fractures. Prospective long-term studies will be necessary to better document the potential advantages and limitations of this operating technique. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV, retrospective case series.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brainstem cavernous malformations (BSCMs) are associated with substantial neurologic morbidity, but the literature on quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment is limited. There is a need for validating the clinical utility of current grading scales for cavernous malformations. OBJECTIVE To assess outcome of surgery for BSCMs and validate how outcome is associated with current grading scales for cavernous malformations. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed a single-surgeon series of patients with BSCM treated surgically during a 10-yr period. Outcome was categorized according to modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and QoL was assessed by interviewing patients using Short Form 36 (SF-36) Health Survey and comparing results with the normative population. The mRS and QoL were correlated with the Lawton BSCM grading scale and with the Zabramski classification of cavernous malformations. RESULTS The study included 22 patients (12 males and 10 females; median age 58 yr). No mortality related to the BSCM surgery occurred, and none were in vegetative state. In SF-36, 70% of patients reported a physical and mental functioning noninferior compared to the general population of comparative age and gender group. There was a significant positive correlation between the Lawton BSCM grading and the postoperative mRS score and QoL. CONCLUSION Outcome of surgery for BSCM was good, as assessed by mRS and QoL. The Lawton grading scale for BSCMs correlated significantly with the postoperative mRS score and QoL, suggesting this grading scale may become a useful clinical tool for treatment prognostication at the individual level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in geriatric patients and non-hospitalized older people are lacking, and the associations among HRQoL, body mass index (BMI) and health status are not sufficiently investigated in these groups. AIM This study aims to describe and compare HRQoL in a sample of geriatric patients and non-hospitalized people >70 years. It further aims to investigate the associations between HRQoL, BMI, health status and sociodemographic variables in geriatric patients and non-hospitalized people >70 years. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 107 geriatric patients and 328 non-hospitalized older people. HRQoL was measured with the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and BMI was divided into three classes: underweight (<22 kg/m2), normal weight (22-27 kg/m2) and overweight (>27 kg/m2). RESULTS All SF-36 scores were lower for the geriatric patients than for the non-hospitalized people (p < .001). Underweight (BMI <22 kg/m2) was registered for 43.9% of the geriatric patients and for 13.7% of the non-hospitalized people. No significant associations were found between the SF-36 subscale scores and underweight, but overweight was associated with lower scores on physical functioning (B: -8.7) and vitality (B: -6.8) compared to those with normal BMI (p < .05). The participants with rheumatic diseases, pulmonary diseases, hypertension and digestive diseases had significantly lower scores on most SF-36 scales reflecting physical health. CONCLUSION HRQoL is substantially lower in geriatric patients than in non-hospitalized older people. The negative effects of both overweight and morbidity on HRQoL indicate that it is important to monitor weight and disease symptoms to promote HRQoL in older people, whether hospitalized or non-hospitalized.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To chart patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in Norwegian patients treated for definite neuroborreliosis (NB). MATERIAL AND METHODS Adult patients treated for definite NB 1-10 years earlier supplied demographics, symptoms and treatment during NB, and answered validated questionnaires; Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), health-related quality of life questionnaire (RAND-36), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15). RESULTS A higher proportion of NB-treated persons reported severe fatigue, defined as FSS score ≥ 5, than in Norwegian normative data, but when removing persons with confounding fatigue associated comorbidities (n = 69) from the analyses, there was no difference between groups. Physical health-related quality of life (RAND-36 PCS), mean FSS score, proportions of persons reporting moderate or severe somatic symptom burden (PHQ-15 score ≥ 10), anxiety (HADS-A ≥ 8), or depression (HADS-D ≥ 8) did not differ between NB-treated persons and reference scores. Mental health-related quality of life (RAND-36 MCS) was poorer than in normative data (47.1 vs. 53.3), but associated with anxiety, depression and current moderate or severe somatic symptom burden, and not with NB characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Results on validated PROM questionnaires measuring fatigue, anxiety, depression, self-reported somatic symptom burden, and physical health-related quality did not differ between persons treated for definite NB 1-10 years earlier and reference scores. NB-treated persons tended to report a slightly poorer mental health-related quality of life than found in normative data, but when adjusting for confounders the causative connection is questionable. Overall, the long-term prognosis of definite NB seems to be good.

Abstract
AIMS Complexity of care in patients with coronary artery disease is increasing, due to ageing, improved treatment, and more specialised care. Patients receive care from various healthcare providers in many settings. Still, few studies have evaluated continuity of care across primary and secondary care levels for patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This study aimed to determine multifaceted aspects of continuity of care and associations with socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported health, clinical characteristics and follow-up services for patients after PCI. METHODS This multi-centre prospective cohort study collected data at baseline and two-month follow-up from medical records, national registries and patient self-reports. Univariable and hierarchical regressions were performed using the Heart Continuity of Care Questionnaire total score as the dependent variable. RESULTS In total, 1695 patients were included at baseline, and 1318 (78%) completed the two-month follow-up. Patients stated not being adequately informed about lifestyle changes, medication and follow-up care. Those experiencing poorer health status after PCI scored significantly worse on continuity of care. Patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction scored significantly better on informational and management continuity than those with other cardiac diagnoses. The regression analyses showed significantly better continuity (P ≤ 0.034) in patients who were male, received written information from hospital, were transferred to another hospital before discharge, received follow-up from their general practitioner or had sufficient consultation time after discharge from hospital. CONCLUSION Risk factors for sub-optimal continuity were identified. These factors are important to patients, healthcare providers and policy makers. Action should be taken to educate patients, reconcile discharge plans and organise post-discharge services. Designing pathways with an interdisciplinary approach and shared responsibility between healthcare settings is recommended.

Abstract
The frailty represents a key determinant of elderly clinical assessment, especially because it allows the identification of risk factors potentially modifiable by clinical and therapeutic interventions. The frailty assessment in elderly patients usually is made by using of Fried criteria. However, to assess the frailty in cirrhotic patients, multiple but different tools are used by researchers. Thus, we aimed to compare frailty prevalence in elderly patients with well-compensated liver cirrhosis and without cirrhosis, according to Fried criteria.Among 205 elderly patients screened, a total of 148 patients were enrolled. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence/absence of well-compensated liver cirrhosis.After clinical examination with conventional scores of cirrhosis, all patients underwent anthropometric measurements, nutritional, biochemical, comorbidity, and cognitive performances. Frailty assessment was evaluated according to Fried frailty criteria.Unexpectedly, according to the Fried criteria, non-cirrhotic patients were frailer (14.2%) than well-compensated liver cirrhotic patients (7.5%). The most represented Fried criterion was the unintentional weight loss in non-cirrhotic patients (10.1%) compared to well-compensated liver cirrhotic patients (1.4%). Moreover, cumulative illness rating scale -G severity score was significantly and positively associated with frailty status (r = 0.234, P < .004). In a multivariate linear regression model, only female gender, body mass index and mini nutritional assessment resulted associated with frailty status, independently of other confounding variables.Despite the fact that elderly cirrhotic patients are considered to be frailer than the non-cirrhotic elderly patient, relying solely on "mere visual appearance," our data show that paradoxically non-cirrhotic elderly patients are frailer than elderly well-compensated liver cirrhotic patients. Thus, clinical implication of this finding is that frailty assessment performed in the well-compensated liver cirrhotic patient can identify those cirrhotic patients who may benefit from tailored interventions similarly to non-cirrhotic elderly patients.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have suggested an association between sleep apnea (SA) and atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to study the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors and type of sleep apnea (SA) in ablation candidates with paroxysmal AF. Methods/Results We prospectively studied 579 patients with paroxysmal AF, including 157 women (27.1%) and 422 men (72.9%). Mean age was 59.9 ± 9.6 years and mean body mass index (BMI) 28.5 ± 4.5 kg/m2. SA was diagnosed using polygraphy for two nights at home. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), STOP-Bang Questionnaire, and Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) assessed the degree of SA symptoms. A total of 479 (82.7%) patients had an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5, whereas moderate-severe SA (AHI ≥ 15) was diagnosed in 244 patients (42.1%). The type of SA was predominantly obstructive, with a median AHI of 12.1 (6.7–20.6) (range 0.4–85.8). The median central apnea index was 0.3 (0.1–0.7). AHI increased with age, BMI, waist and neck circumference, body and visceral fat. Using the Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale and the SF-36, patients with more severe SA had a higher AF burden, severity and symptom score and a lower Physical-Component Summary score. Age, male gender, BMI, duration of AF, and habitual snoring were independent risk factors in multivariate analysis (AHI ≥ 15). We found no association between ESS and AHI (R2 = 0.003, p = 0.367). Conclusions In our AF population, SA was highly prevalent and predominantly obstructive. The high prevalence of SA detected in this study may indicate that SA is under-recognized in patients with AF. None of the screening questionnaires predicted SA reliably.

Abstract
For those surviving encephalitis, the influence on daily life of patients and their relatives may be substantial. In contrast, the prognosis after aseptic meningitis (ASM) is considered good. In this prospective study in patients with encephalitis (n = 20) and ASM (n = 46), we show that both groups experienced reduced Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) at two months after discharge, and that workability was reduced in 37% of the patients with ASM. However, 12 months after discharge no neuropsychological deficits were detected in the ASM group, whereas patients with encephalitis had lower scores on tests of fine motor and psychomotor skills as well as on learning and memory. We also found that for patients with encephalitis, neopterin, as a marker of Th1 cell induced macrophage activation, and a putatively neurotoxic ratio of the kynurenine pathway (KP) measured during the acute phase was associated with lower HRQoL. Our data show that not only encephalitis, but also ASM has substantial short-term influence on HRQoL and workability. For patients with encephalitis we suggest a link between immune activation and activation of the KP during the acute phase with impaired HRQoL.

Abstract
Objectives Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has an impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The objective of this study was to examine generic and disease-specific HRQOL and symptoms in CRS patients with (CRSwNP) and without (CRSsNP) nasal polyps before and 6 months after sinus surgery, and to identify preoperative patient factors associated with HRQOL outcome in the two groups separately. Methods This prospective, observational study consisted of 220 CRSwNP and 196 CRSsNP patients. Generic and disease-specific HRQOL were measured using the Short-Form-Health-Survey (SF-36) and Sino-Nasal-Outcome-Test (SNOT-20). Symptoms were assessed on a visual analog scale. Results Preoperatively, CRSwNP patients reported worse score in general health (SF-36), rhinologic subset (SNOT-20): nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, and altered sense of smell compared to CRSsNP patients, who reported worse score in physical role, bodily pain, ear/face subset, and facial pain. After surgery, generic and disease-specific HRQOL and symptoms improved in both groups. CRSwNP patients had greater improvement in general health, vitality and social function, nasal obstruction, and altered sense of smell, compared to CRSsNP-patients. In both groups, higher age, daily smoking, and having had sinus surgery previously were associated with less generic HRQOL improvement, in addition to female sex and allergy in CRSsNP patients. Conclusion The greater improvement in general health, vitality, and social function after surgery may indicate a greater potential for generic HRQOL improvement in CRSwNP patients compared to CRSsNP patients. Female sex and allergy was associated with less improvement of generic HRQOL in the CRSsNP group, but not in the CRSwNP group. Level of evidence 2c outcome research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current treatment guidelines for European Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) recommend cephalosporins, penicillin or doxycycline for 14-28 days but evidence for optimal treatment length is poor. Treatment lengths in clinical practice tend to exceed the recommendations. Most patients experience a rapid improvement of symptoms and neurological findings within days of treatment, but some report long-term complaints. The underlying mechanisms of remaining complaints are debated, and theories as ongoing chronic infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, dysregulated immune responses, genetic predisposition, coinfection with multiple tick-borne pathogens, structural changes in CNS and personal traits have been suggested. The main purpose of our trial is to address the hypothesis of improved outcome after long-term antibiotic treatment of LNB, by comparing efficacy of treatment with 2 and 6 weeks courses of doxycycline. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The trial has a multicentre, non-inferiority, double-blinded design. One hundred and twenty patients diagnosed with LNB according to European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS)guidelines will be randomised to 6 or 2 weeks treatment with oral doxycycline. The patients will be followed for 12 months. The primary endpoint is improvement on a composite clinical score (CCS) from baseline to 6 months after inclusion. Secondary endpoints are improvements in the CCS 12 months after inclusion, fatigue scored on Fatigue Severity Scale, subjective symptoms on the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 scale, health-related quality of life scored on RAND 36-item short form health survey and safety as measured by side effects of the two treatment arms. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are collected from inclusion and throughout the follow-up and a biobank will be established. The study started including patients in November 2015 and will continue throughout December 2019. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study is approved by the Norwegian regional committees for medical and health research ethics and the Norwegian Medicines Agency. Data from the study will be published in peer-reviewed medical journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER 2015-001481-25.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Continuity of cardiac care after hospital discharge is a priority, especially as healthcare systems become increasingly complex and fragmented. There are few available instruments to measure continuity of cardiac care, especially from the patient perspective. The aim of this study was (1) to translate and adapt the Heart Continuity of Care Questionnaire (HCCQ) to conditions in Norway, and (2) to determine its psychometric properties in self-report format administered to patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS The HCCQ was first translated into Norwegian from the original English version, following a widely used cross-cultural adaptation process. Data were collected before hospital discharge and in a follow-up after 2 months. To assess psychometric properties, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed and three aspects of construct validity were evaluated: structural validity, hypotheses testing and cross-cultural validation. Internal consistency of the HCCQ subscales was calculated using Cronbach's alpha, while intra-class correlation (ICC) was used to assess test-retest reliability. Additionally, socio-demographic and patient-reported data were collected to correlate with HCCQ scores. RESULTS Of those included at baseline, 436 (76%) completed the questionnaires after 2 months. CFA suggested that the fit of the HCCQ data to a 3-factor model was modest (RMSEA = 0.11, CFI = 0.90, TLI = 0.90). However, convergent validity was satisfactory, based on existing research. Internal consistency was good, as indicated by its Cronbach's alphas: total continuity of care (0.95); informational (0.93), relational (0.87), and management (0.89) continuity. The ICC for the total HCCQ score was 0.80 (95% CI [0.71, 0.87] p < 0.001). As indicated by negative care experiences (rated as 1 or 2 on the five-point scale), patients seemed to have limited knowledge about medical treatment, lifestyle modification and follow-up after PCI. Participation in cardiac rehabilitation and longer consultations with the general practitioner after hospital discharge were positively correlated with better continuity of care. CONCLUSIONS Implementation of the HCCQ will likely support healthcare providers and researchers in identifying problem areas of continuity of cardiac care and in evaluating interventions aimed at improving continuity of care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Iatrogenic perforations are the most common cause of esophageal perforation. We present our experience mainly based on a non-operative treatment approach as well as long-term outcome in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one patients were treated for iatrogenic esophageal perforation at Oslo University Hospital, Ullevål from February 2007 to March 2014. The etiology of perforation was dilation of benign stricture in eight patients, either dilation, stenting or stent removal in four with malignant stenosis, during diagnostic endoscopy in four, removal of foreign body in two and by other causes in three patients, respectively. After median 82 months, 10 patients alive (47.6%) were sent questionnaires about dysphagia, HRQoL and fatigue. RESULTS Median age at time of treatment was 66 years. Median in-hospital stay and mortality were 10.5 days and 4.8%, respectively. Initial treatment in 15 patients (71.4%) was non-surgical of whom one needed delayed debridement for pleural empyema. Initial treatment in six patients (28.6%) was surgical of whom three needed delayed stenting. Altogether 14 patients (66.7%) were stented. Eight (57.1%) had restenting. Median number of stents used was 1 (1-4). The stents were removed after median 36 days. The perforations healed after 2.5 months. After median 82 months, the patients reported reduced HRQoL. There was no significant difference regarding level of dysphagia and fatigue. CONCLUSIONS We report satisfactorily short-term and long-term results of iatrogenic esophageal perforations. Mortality was low and HRQoL was deteriorated. Dysphagia and fatigue were comparable to a reference population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important outcome in coronary heart disease (CHD). However, variability in HRQoL indicators suggests a need to consider domain coverage. This review applies a globally accepted framework, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), to map HRQoL measures that are reliable and valid among people with CHD. METHODS The Embase, Pubmed and PsycInfo databases were searched, with 10 observational studies comparing HRQOL among 4786 adults with CHD to 50949 controls identified. Study reporting quality was examined (QualSyst). Hedges' g statistic (with 95% CIs and p values) was used to measure the effect size for the difference between group means (≤ 0.2 small, ≤ 0.5 medium, ≤ 0.80 large difference), and between-study heterogeneity (tau, I2 test) examined using a random effects model. RESULTS Adults with CHD reported lowered HRQoL (gw = - 0.418, p < 0.001). Adjusted mean differences in HRQoL ratings, controlling for socio-demographics, were smaller but remained significant. Large group differences were associated with individual measures of activity and participation (WHOQOL g = - 1.199, p < 0.001) and self-perceived health (SF 36 g = - 0.616, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The ICF provides a framework for evaluating and understanding the impact of CHD on HRQoL. The results demonstrate that HRQoL goes beyond physical symptoms, with activity limitations, social support and participation, and personal perceptions identified as key ICF domains in CHD assessment. Further investigations are needed to unravel the dynamic and inter-relationships between these domains, including longitudinal trends in HRQoL indicators.

Abstract
Objective Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders and is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain or abnormal defecation. This investigation evaluated the relationship between IBS and self-reported quality of life in a community-dwelling population in Japan. Methods For this cross-sectional survey, we enrolled 1002 volunteers who participated in the Iwaki Health Promotion Project in 2013. IBS symptoms were evaluated using the criteria from the Japanese version of the Rome III Questionnaire. The assessments included an interview to obtain sociodemographic data, the second version of the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between IBS symptoms and scores on the SF-36. Results A total of 59 subjects (5.9%) were classified as having IBS. Scores for all eight domains of the SF-36, the physical component summary, and the mental component summary were significantly and negatively associated with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scores. Physical functioning, role physical, vitality, mental health, and physical component summary scores were significantly and negatively associated with IBS. Conclusions The burden of IBS symptoms affects both physical and mental wellbeing, even after adjusting for confounders. Our findings suggest that screening for IBS symptoms and evaluating the need for medical care is important for community health workers.

Abstract
Background: The purposes of the present study were to identify the determinants of health status 3 to 6 years after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for the treatment of closed ankle fracture and to compare the health status of patients who had undergone this procedure with that in the general population after adjusting for sociodemographic variables, body mass index (BMI), and smoking status. Methods: The present study was a historical cohort study combined with a postal survey. In total, 1,149 patients who underwent ORIF for the treatment of closed ankle fractures at 2 hospitals were eligible for chart review; 959 with low-energy fractures were eligible for a postal survey, and 471 (49%) responded to the Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36) health status questionnaire and provided data on BMI. Determinants of the physical functioning (PF), physical component summary (PCS), and mental component summary (MCS) scores of the SF-36 were analyzed by means of multivariable linear regression analysis. The health status of patients with an ankle fracture (n = 471) was compared with that in a sample of the general population (n = 5,396) by means of multivariable regression. Results: Age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class III, and complications following surgery were associated with PF and PCS scores, and a BMI of ≥30 kg/m2 and current smoking status was associated with PF and MCS scores. However, the PF, PCS, and MCS scores of patients with ankle fractures did not differ from those of the general population, with unstandardized regression coefficients of 0.25 (95% confidence interval [CI], –1.67 to 2.16; p = 0.80), 0.67 (95% CI, –0.35 to 1.70; p = 0.199), and –0.57 (95% CI, –1.63 to 0.49; p = 0.29), respectively. Conclusions: Age, ASA class III, and complications following surgery were associated with PF and PCS scores at 3 to 6 years after surgery for the treatment of closed ankle fractures. However, the health status of patients with ankle fractures did not differ from that in the general population after adjusting for differences in demographic variables, BMI, and smoking status. Norwegian reference values for the Short-Form Health Survey 36: development over time. Qual Life Res 2017; 27:1201-1212. Abstract
Purpose Reference values for patient-reported outcome measures are useful for interpretation of results from clinical trials. The study aims were to collect Norwegian SF-36 reference values and compare with data from 1996 to 2002. Methods In 2015, SF-36 was sent by mail to a representative sample of the population (N = 6165). Time trends and associations between background variables and SF-36 scale scores were compared by linear regression models. Results The 2015 response rate was 36% (N = 2118) versus 67% (N = 2323) in 1996 and 56% (N = 5241) in 2002. Only 5% of the youngest (18–29 years) and 27% of the oldest (>70 years) responded in 2015. Age and educational level were significantly higher in 2015 relative to 1996/2002 (p < .001). The oldest age group in 2015 reported better scores on five of eight scales (p < 0.01), the exceptions being bodily pain, vitality, and mental health compared to 1996/2002 (NS). Overall, the SF-36 scores were relatively stable across surveys, controlled for background variables. In general, the most pronounced changes in 2015 were better scores on the role limitations emotional scale (7.4 points, p < .001) and lower scores on the bodily pain scale (4.6 points, p < .001) than in the 1996/2002 survey. Conclusions The low response rate in 2015 suggests that the results, especially among the youngest, should be interpreted with caution. The high response rate among the oldest indicates good representativity for those >70 years. Despite societal changes in Norway the past two decades, HRQoL has remained relatively stable.
