What it takes to fly: the structural and functional respiratory refinements in birds and bats

The detailed anatomy of Rhamphorhynchus: axial pneumaticity and its implications

An acid- and transfer-prepared, juvenile Rhamphorhynchus muensteri, despite some fragmentation, is in an excellent state of three-dimensional preservation, exposing exquisite anatomical details hitherto unknown in other pterosaurs. Here we describe the axial pneumatizations of the cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae and the sternum. The interior of the cervical centra is subdivided into a pair of large camerae, presumably by air sacs entering by large pleurocoels in the sides of the centra. This so-called ‘camerate’ type of pneumatization is hitherto unknown in pterosaurs. Another excavation enters from the ventral side into the base of the neural arch and stretches between the pre- and postzygapophyses. This type of cavity also penetrates from the ventral side into the base of the first few transverse processes of the dorsal vertebrae, although these lack central pleurocoels. The cristospine also has a complex pneumatic foramen.

Skeletal pneumaticity is most probably a result of a highly derived pulmonary system, as in extant birds. Morphologically similar pneumatic features are present in most saurischian dinosaurs and it is possible that they are the result of convergence. Because basal members of the various groups, including Triassic pterosaurs, appear to lack skeletal pneumaticity, convergence seems likely, although the stem-ornithodiran parsimoniously possessed a more bird-like than ‘reptile’-like pulmonary system, albeit non-invasive. This points to possible tachymetabolism in these forms, which is in accord with the distribution of other factors such as integumentary structures and bone histology. It is concluded that evolution of this suite of advanced features, surprisingly, was among the earliest events in the ornithodiran lineage soon after it split off from its crocodilian sister-group.

The ecological and evolutionary interface of hummingbird flight physiology

The hovering ability, rapidity of maneuvers and upregulated aerobic capacity of hummingbirds have long attracted the interest of flight biologists. The range of intra- and interspecific variation in flight performance among hummingbirds, however, is equally impressive. A dominant theme in hummingbird evolution is progressive invasion of higher-elevation habitats. Hypobaric challenge is met behaviorally through compensatory changes in wingbeat kinematics, particularly in stroke amplitude. Over evolutionary time scales, montane colonization is associated with increases in body mass and relative wing area. Hovering ability has been well-studied in several North American hummingbird taxa, yet the broad range of interspecific variation in hummingbird axial and appendicular anatomy remains to be assessed mechanistically. Such varied features as tail length, molt condition and substantial weight change due to lipid-loading can dramatically alter various features of the flight envelope. Compared with our present knowledge of hovering performance in hummingbirds, the mechanics of forward flight and maneuvers is not well understood.

Relationships among flight-related morphology, competitive ability and foraging behavior have been the focus of numerous studies on tropical and temperate hummingbirds. Ecologists have hypothesized that the primary selective agents on hummingbird flight-related morphology are the behaviors involved in floral nectar consumption. However, flight behaviors involved in foraging for insects may also influence the evolution of wing size and shape. Several comparisons of hummingbird communities across elevational gradients suggest that foraging strategies and competitive interactions within and among species vary systematically across elevations as the costs of flight change with body size and wing shape.

Common themes of adaptation to hypoxia. Insights from comparative physiology

Many vertebrate animals have superior tolerance to environmental hypoxia compared to humans. For example, turtles tolerate an environment of 100% N2 for several hours, without apparent ill effect. This hypoxia tolerance is not limited to heterotherms, as some species of marine mammals, such as the northern elephant seal, may voluntarily dive for periods of up to 2 hours. Torpid bats exhibit prolonged periods of apnea and passive diffusion of oxygen down their trachea through an open glottis supplies a significant amount of the oxygen uptake. The Ruppell's griffon holds the known avian record of flight at 11,278 m, and other birds regularly migrate at altitudes over 8000m. These animals exhibit diverse adaptations for tolerating their hypoxic environment, many of which are poorly understood. Some of theses strategies include 1) the ability to lower metabolic rate when exposed to hypoxia 2) the ability to recruit alternate biochemical pathways for energy production 3) a left shifted oxy-hemoglobin dissociation curve 4) more efficient pulmonary gas exchange 5) the ability to alter blood flow distribution under hypoxic stress. Although there are common themes of animal adaptation to hypoxic stress, many animal solutions are unique.

Some recent advances on the study and understanding of the functional design of the avian lung: morphological and morphometric perspectives

The small highly aerobic avian species have morphometrically superior lungs while the large flightless ones have less well-refined lungs. Two parabronchial systems, i.e. the paleopulmo and neopulmo, occur in the lungs of relatively advanced birds. Although their evolution and development are not clear, understanding their presence is physiologically important particularly since the air- and blood flow patterns in them are different. Geometrically, the bulk air flow in the parabronchial lumen, i.e. in the longitudinal direction, and the flow of deoxygenated blood from the periphery, i.e. in a centripetal direction, are perpendicularly arranged to produce a cross-current relationship. Functionally, the blood capillaries in the avian lung constitute a multicapillary serial arterialization system. The amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchanged arises from many modest transactions that occur where air- and blood capillaries interface along the parabronchial lengths, an additive process that greatly enhances the respiratory efficiency. In some species of birds, an epithelial tumescence occurs at the terminal part of the extrapulmonary primary bronchi (EPPB). The swelling narrows the EPPB, conceivably allowing the shunting of inspired air across the openings of the medioventral secondary bronchi, i.e. inspiratory aerodynamic valving. The defence stratagems in the avian lung differ from those of mammals: fewer surface (free) macrophages (SMs) occur, the epithelial cells that line the atria and infundibula are phagocytic, a large population of subepithelial macrophages is present and pulmonary intravascular macrophages exist. This complex defence inventory may explain the paucity of SMs in the avian lung.
