Abstract
Polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are an important subclass of polyoxometalates with a broad range of molecular compositions and physicochemical properties. One relatively underdeveloped application of these polynuclear assemblies involves their use as atomically precise, homogenous molecular models for bulk metal oxides. Given the structural and electronic similarities of POVs and extended vanadium oxide materials, as well as the relative ease of modifying the homogenous congeners, investigation of the chemical and physical properties of pristine and modified cluster complexes presents a method toward understanding the influence of structural modifications (e.g. crystal structure/phase, chemical makeup of surface ligands, elemental dopants) on the properties of extended solids. This review summarises recent advances in the use of POV clusters as atomically precise models for bulk metal oxides, with particular focus on the assembly of vanadium oxide clusters and the consequences of altering the molecular composition of the assembly via organofunctionalization and the incorporation of elemental "dopants".

Abstract
Mixed metal oxide (MMO) with relatively homogeneous mesopores was successfully obtained by calcination and reconstruction of albumin-templated layered double hydroxide (LDH). The aggregation degree of albumin-template was controlled by adjusting two different synthesis routes, coprecipitation and reconstruction. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopic images indicated that crystal growth of LDH was fairly limited during albumin-templated coprecipitation due to the aggregation. On the hand, crystal growth along the lateral direction was facilitated in albumin-templated reconstruction due to the homogeneous distribution of proteins moiety. Different state of albumin during LDH synthesis influenced the local disorder and porous structure of calcination product, MMO. The N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms demonstrated that calcination on reconstructed LDH produced MMO with large specific surface area and narrow distribution of mesopores compared with calcination of coprecipitated LDH.

Abstract
Portable and inexpensive gas sensors are essential for the next generation of non-invasive medical diagnostics, smart air quality monitoring & control, human search & rescue and food quality assessment to name a few of their immediate applications. Therein, analyte selectivity in complex gas mixtures like breath or indoor air remains the major challenge. Filters are an effective and versatile, though often unrecognized, route to overcome selectivity issues by exploiting additional properties of target analytes (e.g., molecular size and surface affinity) besides reactivity with the sensing material. This review provides a tutorial for the material engineering of sorption, size-selective and catalytic filters. Of specific interest are high surface area sorbents (e.g., activated carbon, silica gels and porous polymers) with tunable properties, microporous materials (e.g., zeolites and metal-organic frameworks) and heterogeneous catalysts, respectively. Emphasis is placed on material design for targeted gas separation, portable device integration and performance. Finally, research frontiers and opportunities for low-cost gas sensing systems in emerging applications are highlighted.

Abstract
The heterocyclic molecules are medicinally important and are applied in different
other fields. The environmentally benign synthetic method for the synthesis of this
important group of compounds is always explored. Bimetallic nanoparticles are getting
attention as heterogeneous catalysts for their synthesis. The bimetallic nanoparticles have
been usually synthesized by chemical or physical methods or both in combination. Chemists
are also using part of plants in the synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles and these have
been successful. The present review work will be going to enrich the existing literature by
compiling the use of plant parts in the synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles and their utility
in the synthesis of heterocyclic molecules.

Abstract
Nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur-containing fused heterocycles are of great importance
because of their exciting and diverse biological activities. The construction of the carbonnitrogen
and carbon-oxygen through a multicomponent reaction approach by using ecofriendly
reusable heterogeneous catalysts are of significant importance as it opens avenues for
the introduction of nitrogen and oxygen in organic molecules. Thus, green methodologies
have gained particular significance in this field; today, green chemistry is considered a tool
for introducing sustainable concepts at the fundamental level. This review emphasizes and
discusses the current progress on the applications of eco-friendly, recyclable heterogeneous
catalysts for the synthesis of different heterocyclic fused systems and their green protocols.
We paid particular attention to the specific integration of carbon-nitrogen, and carbon-oxygen
bond-forming fused heterocycles by a one-pot approach by evaluating the literature between 2012 and the middle of
2020. The efficiency of the catalyst is assessed in terms of reaction time, yield and possible reusability. The MCR and
heterogeneous catalyst strategies have demonstrated broader scope, economical and viability for the green and sustainable
processes in the field of synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract
AbstractMetallic composites represent a vital class of materials that has gained increased attention in crude oil processing as well as the production of biofuel from other sources in recent times. Several catalytic materials have been reported in the literature for catalytic cracking, particularly, of crude oil. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of existing and emerging methods/technologies such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), metal–matrix composites (MMCs), and catalytic support materials, to bridge information gaps toward sustainable advancement in catalysis for petrochemical processes. There is an increase in industrial and environmental concern emanating from the sulphur levels of oils, hence the need to develop more efficient catalysts in the hydrotreatment (HDS and HDN) processes, and combating the challenge of catalyst poisoning and deactivation; in a bid to improving the overall quality of oils and sustainable use of catalyst. Structural improvement, high thermal stability, enhanced cracking potential, and environmental sustainability represent the various benefits accrued to the use of metallic composites as opposed to conventional catalysts employed in catalytic cracking processes.

Abstract
We investigate, using density functional theory, how the interaction between the ferroelectric polarization and the chemical structure of the (001) surfaces of bismuth ferrite influences the surface properties and reactivity of this material. A precise understanding of the surface behavior of ferroelectrics is necessary for their use in surface science applications such as catalysis as well as for their incorporation in microelectronic devices. Using the (001) surface of bismuth ferrite as a model system, we show that the most energetically favored surface geometries are combinations of surface termination and polarization direction that lead to uncharged stable surfaces. On the unfavorable charged surfaces, we explore the compensation mechanisms of surface charges provided by the introduction of point defects and adsorbates, such as water. Finally, we propose that the special surface properties of bismuth ferrite (001) could be used to produce an effective water splitting cycle through cyclic polarization switching.

Abstract
1,4-Dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP), a privileged heterocyclic scaffold, has been extensively utilized in various biological and therapeutic applications. In this review article, we discussed the role of different nano-catalysts, nanoflakes, nanocomposites, and other green-supported nanomaterials in the synthesis of a biologically active and vital pharmaceutical precursor 1,4-DHP and its derivatives such as polyhydroquinoline, benzopyranopyridines, and dihydropyridine since 2015. It is evident that although the use of various tailored nanostructures under different conditions to optimize the synthesis of 1,4-DHP and its compounds has provided sustainable and efficient proposals, yet the development of greener practices in the synthesis of 1,4-DHPs, which can be applied to design new synthetic routes and sequences in process development, is a far-reaching task to be accomplished. Single pot multicomponent approaches using different nanomaterials as green catalysts for synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP), a privileged heterocyclic scaffold with vital biological and therapeutic applications are reviewed. ![]()

Abstract
Carboxymethyl cellulose/copper oxide-nickel oxide (CMC/CuO-NiO) nanocomposite beads were prepared by facile, simple and environmentally friendly method. Initially, CuO-NiO was prepared and applied for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The results showed that CuO-NiO demonstrate high catalytic activity toward the reduction of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with a rate constant of 2.97 × 10-2 s-1. Further, CuO-NiO were well-dispersed in the polymeric matrix of carboxymethyl cellulose to prepare CMC/CuO-NiO beads. CMC/CuO-NiO nanocomposite beads were also applied to catalyze the reduction of potassium ferrocyanide (K3Fe (CN)6), 4-NP, Congo red (CR) and Eosin yellow (EY) in the presence of sodium borohydride. Experimental data indicated that CMC/CuO-NiO nanocomposite has higher catalytic activity and high rate constant compared to CuO-NiO. The rate constant found to be 6.88 × 10-2, 6.27 × 10-2, 1.89 × 10-2 and 2.43 × 10-2 for K3Fe(CN)6, 4-NP, CR and EY, respectively, using 5 mg CMC/CuO-NiO beads. FE-SEM, EDX, FTER, XRD and XPS were used to characterize the nanocomposites. CMC/CuO-NiO beads catalytically reduced up to 95-99% of K3Fe(CN)6, 4-NP, CR and EY within 40, 60, 120 and 120 s. CMC/CuO-NiO beads were found more selective for the reduction of 4-NP. The catalytic reduction performance of CMC/CuO-NiO beads was optimized by studying the influence of different parameters on the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. Hence, the effective and super catalytic performance toward the reduction of different organic and inorganic pollutants makes CMC/CuO-NiO beads a smart material and suitable for numerous scientific and industrial applications and may be used as an alternative to high-cost commercial catalysts.

Abstract
Photocatalytic organic synthesis/conversions and water treatment under visible light are a challenging task to use renewable energy in chemical transformations. In this review a brief overview on the mainly employed visible light photocatalysts and a discussion on the problems and advantages of Vis-light versus UV-light irradiation is reported. Visible light photocatalysts in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2, conversion of acetophenone to phenylethanol, hydrogenation of nitro compounds, oxidation of cyclohexane, synthesis of vanillin and phenol, as well as hydrogen production and water treatment are discussed. Some applications of these photocatalysts in photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) for carrying out organic synthesis, conversion and/or degradation of organic pollutants are reported. The described cases show that PMRs represent a promising green technology that could shift on applications of industrial interest using visible light (from Sun) active photocatalysts.

Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Activity of Ternary Oxide Catalysts Using the Microwave-Assisted Solution Combustion Method. MATERIALS 2020; 13:ma13204607. Abstract
Ni−Co−Al, Ni−Cu−Al and Co−Cu−Al ternary oxide catalysts, with a fixed 5 wt% transition metal loading, were prepared by the microwave-assisted solution combustion method and tested in CO oxidation. The bulk and surface properties of the catalysts were investigated, using XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, SEM, XPS and TEM techniques. XRD, XPS and TEM results revealed that nickel and cobalt were present as spinels on the surface and in the bulk. Differently, copper was preferentially present in “bulk-like” CuO-segregated phases. No interaction between the couples of transition metal species was detected, and the introduction of Cu-containing precursors into the Ni−Al or Co−Al combustion systems was not effective in preventing the formation of NiAl2O4 and CoAl2O4 spinels in the Ni− or Co-containing catalysts. Copper-containing catalysts were the most active, indicating that copper oxides are the effective active species for improving the CO oxidation activity.

Abstract
AbstractThe “Seven Pillars” of oxidation catalysis proposed by Robert K. Grasselli represent an early example of phenomenological descriptors in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Major advances in the theoretical description of catalytic reactions have been achieved in recent years and new catalysts are predicted today by using computational methods. To tackle the immense complexity of high-performance systems in reactions where selectivity is a major issue, analysis of scientific data by artificial intelligence and data science provides new opportunities for achieving improved understanding. Modern data analytics require data of highest quality and sufficient diversity. Existing data, however, frequently do not comply with these constraints. Therefore, new concepts of data generation and management are needed. Herein we present a basic approach in defining best practice procedures of measuring consistent data sets in heterogeneous catalysis using “handbooks”. Selective oxidation of short-chain alkanes over mixed metal oxide catalysts was selected as an example.

Abstract
In the present paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of both binary (Cu2O, Fe2O3, and In2O3) and ternary (Cu2O-Fe2O3 and Cu2O-In2O3) transition metal mixed-oxides that may find application as photocatalysts for solar driven CO2 conversion into energy rich species. Two different preparation techniques (High Energy Milling (HEM) and Co-Precipitation (CP)) are compared and materials properties are studied by means of a variety of characterization and analytical techniques UV-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-VIS DRS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectrometry (EDX). Appropriate data elaboration methods are used to extract materials bandgap for Cu2O@Fe2O3 and Cu2O@In2O3 prepared by HEM and CP, and foresee whether the newly prepared semiconductor mixed oxides pairs are useful for application in CO2-H2O coprocessing. The experimental results show that the synthetic technique influences the photoactivity of the materials that can correctly be foreseen on the basis of bandgap experimentally derived. Of the mixed oxides prepared and described in this work, only Cu2O@In2O3 shows positive results in CO2-H2O photo-co-processing. Preliminary results show that the composition and synthetic methodologies of mixed-oxides, the reactor geometry, the way of dispersing the photocatalyst sample, play a key role in the light driven reaction of CO2–H2O. This work is a rare case of full characterization of photo-materials, using UV-Visible DRS, XPS, XRD, TEM, EDX for the surface and bulk analytical characterization. Surface composition may not be the same of the bulk composition and plays a key role in photocatalysts behavior. We show that a full material knowledge is necessary for the correct forecast of their photocatalytic behavior, inferred from experimentally determined bandgaps.

Abstract
Here, we report an efficient and highly selective oxidation of lignin model substrate using phyto-mediated ZnFe2O4 nanoparticle using Boswellia carterii extract. The nanocatalyst with an average size of 8 nm showed excellent photocatalytic activity of the synthesized carbonyl containing products under visible light irradiation. The catalytic activity and selectivity towards oxidation of vanillyl alcohol to vanillin with selectivity up to 99% at conversion over 98% and turn-over frequency values up to 1600 h−1 were obtained in the presence of H2O2 and base. The cubic spinel nano-ZnFe2O4 catalyst was characterized by powder-XRD, FESEM, HR-TEM and Mössbauer analysis. The demonstrated catalyst was robust and stable under the reaction conditions. Furthermore, it was easy to be separated from the reaction mixture and be reused for subsequent reactions up to 5 times without significant reactivity or selectivity loss.

Abstract
High-level quantum chemical calculations on RuO0,± elucidate the electronic structure of their low-lying electronic states. For thirty-two states, we report the electronic configurations, bond lengths, vibrational frequencies, spin-orbit splittings, and excitation energies. The electronic states of RuO can be generated from those of RuO+ by adding one electron to the σ non-bonding orbital closely resembling the 5s atomic orbital of Ru. The ground states for RuO and RuO- are clearly identified as 5Δ and 4Δ, but the two states (4Δ and 2Π) compete for RuO+. The difficulty of calculations is revealed by our small binding energies compared to the experimental values. In addition, we studied the reaction of the three species with water in their ground and selected low-lying electronic states. We found a consistent decrease of the activation energy barriers and higher exothermicity as we add electrons to the system. RuO- is found to facilitate the reaction for both kinetic and thermodynamic reasons.

Abstract
The development of solid acid catalysts, especially based on metal oxides and different magnetic nanoparticles, gained much awareness recently as a result of the development of different nano-based materials. Solid acid catalysts based on metal oxides are promising for the (trans)esterification reactions of different oils and waste materials for biodiesel production. This review gives a brief overview of recent developments in various solid acid catalysts based on different metal oxides, such as zirconia, zinc, titanium, iron, tungsten, and magnetic materials, where the catalysts are optimized for various reaction parameters, such as the amount of catalyst, molar ratio of oil to alcohol, reaction time, and temperature. Furthermore, yields and conversions for biodiesel production are compared. Such metal-oxide-based solid acid catalysts provide more sustainable, green, and easy-separation synthesis routes with high catalytic activity and reusability than traditionally used catalysts.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) can benefit from immobilization on solid supports to overcome their difficulty in processability and stability. Among the reported solid supports, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a crystalline, versatile platform for depositing highly active POMs. The combination of these structures can at times benefit from the combined reactivity of both the POM and MOF, sometimes synergistically, to improve catalysis while balancing desirable properties like porosity, substrate diffusion, or stability. In this Review, we survey the strategies for immobilizing POMs within MOF structures, with an emphasis on how physical and catalytic properties of the parent materials are affected in the composite when employed in organic transformations.

Abstract
Surface interaction through adsorption and dissociation between H2O and metal oxides plays an important role in many industrial as well as fundamental processes. To gain further insights on the interaction, this study performs dispersion-corrected Hubbard-corrected density functional theory calculations in H2O adsorption and dissociation on stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric CuO(1 1 1) surfaces. The nonstoichiometric surfaces consist of oxygen vacancy defect and oxygen-preadsorbed surfaces. This study finds that H2O is chemically adsorbed on the top of Cusub and Cusub-Cusub bridge due to the interaction of its p orbital with d orbital of Cu. The adsorption is found to be the strongest on the surface with the oxygen vacancy defect, followed by the stoichiometric surface, and the oxygen-preadsorbed surface. The oxygen vacancy increases the reactivity for H2O adsorption and reduces the reaction energy required for H2O dissociation on the surface. However, the surface modification by the oxygen-preadsorbed significantly reduces the barrier energy for H2O dissociation when compared with the other surfaces.

Abstract
Nickel oxide loaded on zirconia (NiO/ZrO2) as an expedient catalyst is reported for the synthesis of 18 unsymmetrical 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives. The Lewis acidic nature of the catalyst proved an excellent choice for the one-pot, four-component fusion reaction with excellent yields of 89-98% and a completion time of 20-45 min. Mechanistic studies show that enamine and imine functionalities are the two possible pathways for the formation of 1,4-dihydropyridines with high selectivity. Crystal structures of two novel compounds (5a, 5c) were reported. The catalyst demonstrated reusability up to six cycles. The reaction at room temperature and ethanol as a solvent make this protocol green and economical.

Abstract
Metallic nanomaterials show tremendous applications in biomedical devices due to compatible integration into the most of the biological systems as they are nano- structured. Metallic nanomaterials are capable of mimicking all the three major antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), peroxidase and oxidase, to control the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside the cell as an alternative strategy over conventional one which has biological toxicity and have several adverse effects, if accumulation takes places during the treatment. This anti-oxidant property of metallic nanomaterials demonstrates as a promising candidate for its biomedical application in disease conditions where the excessive level of ROS causes damage to DNA, lipids and protein in several conditions such as diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Tribology is the study of interacting surfaces in motion and the measurement of properties such as friction, wear-tear and abrasion. While designing nano-scale biomedical devices, the consideration of tribology is particularly important because the high surface area ratio enhances problems with friction and wear-tear which can further affects its function as well as longevity.

Abstract
The selective oxidation of cyclohexane to a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (KA oil) is one of the imperative reactions in industrial processes. In this study, the catalytic performance of manganese-supported gamma alumina (Mn/γ-Al2O3) catalysts is investigated in the selective oxidation of cyclohexane at ambient conditions using ozone. The catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method, and their physio-chemical properties were studied by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy, and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET). The reaction conditions were optimised considering various parameters such as reaction time, pH, and various percentages of the manganese supported in gamma alumina. The oxidation of cyclohexane was conducted in an impinger reactor unit at pH 3, 7, and 11 for 1 h of ozonation time. The aliquots were collected after 30 min and 1 h of ozonation time and analysed with GC-MS and FT-IR spectroscopy. The 2.5% Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited a significantly enhanced catalytic performance at pH 3 and 7 with a percentage conversion of 9% and 15% at pH 3 and 7, respectively, after 30 min of ozonation time. However, after 1 h of ozonation time, the percentage conversions were increased to 23% and 29% at pH 3 and 7, respectively. At pH 11, 5% Mn/γ-Al2O3 exhibit high catalytic performance with a percentage conversion of 19% and 31% after 30 minutes and 1 h of ozonation time, respectively. The percentage selectivity obtained is 100% toward KA oil and/or cyclohexanone depending on pH and reaction time.
