New powder reuse schema in laser-based powder bed fusion of polymers

The laser-based powder bed fusion of polymers (PBF-LB/P) process often utilizes a blend of powders with varying degrees of degradation. Specifically, for polyamide 12, the traditional reuse schema involves mixing post-processed powder with virgin powder at a predetermined ratio before reintroducing it to the process. Given that only about 15% of the powder is utilized in part production, and powders are refreshed in equal proportions, there arises a challenge with the incremental accumulation of material across build cycles. To mitigate the consumption of fresh powder relative to the actual material usage, this study introduces the incorporation of recycled material into the PBF-LB/P process. This new powder reuse schema is presented for the first time, focusing on the laser sintering process. The characteristics of the recycled powder were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution, and dynamic powder flowability assessments. The findings reveal that waste powders can be effectively reused in PBF-LB/P to produce components with satisfactory mechanical properties, porosity levels, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality.

Diffusion-based culture and real-time impedance monitoring of tumor spheroids in hydrogel microwells of a suspended membrane under microfluidic conditions

Tumor spheroids are widely studied for in vitro modeling of tumor growth and responses to anticancer drugs. However, current methods are mostly limited to static and perfusion-based cultures, which can be improved by more accurately mimicking pathological conditions. Here, we developed a diffusion-based dynamic culture system for tumor spheroids studies using a thin membrane of hydrogel microwells and a microfluidic device. This allows for effective exchange of nutrients and metabolites between the tumors and the culture medium flowing underneath, resulting in uniform tumor spheroids. To monitor the growth and drug response of the spheroids in real-time, we performed spectroscopic analyses of the system's impedance, demonstrating a close correlation between the tumor size and the resistance and capacitance of the system. Our results also indicate an enhanced drug effect on the tumor spheroids in the presence of a low AC electric field, suggesting a weakening mechanism of the spheroids induced by external perturbation.

Composite antibacterial hydrogels based on two natural products pullulan and ε-poly-l-lysine for burn wound healing

Antibacterial hydrogels as burn wound dressings are capable of efficaciously defending against bacterial infection and accelerating burn wound healing. Thus far, a large plethora of antibacterial hydrogels have adopted numerous components and intricate preparation processes, yet restricting their practical industrialization applications. Simple and effective preparation methods of antibacterial hydrogels are hence urgently needed. Herein, an easy but efficacious strategy with the employment of two natural products pullulan and ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PL) was designed to fabricate composite antibacterial hydrogels for burn wound healing for the first time. The hydrogel crosslinking networks were formed through amidation reactions between carboxylated pullulan derivative (CP) and ε-poly-l-lysine hydrochloride (ε-PL·HCl). The resulting hydrogels possessed high transparency, porous structures, tunable gelation time and gel content, relatively low swelling ratios, appropriate self-degradability, proper mechanical properties, strong in vitro bacteriostatic activities, non-cytotoxicity, capacities of facilitating cell migration and excellent hemocompatibility. In the infected burn model of mice, the hydrogels were observed to display prominent in vivo antibacterial activities and enable the acceleration of burn wound healing. We opine the simply and effectively prepared antibacterial hydrogels as promising dressings for burn wound recovery have broad industrialization prospects.

A review on point mutations via proton transfer in DNA base pairs in the absence and presence of electric fields

This comprehensive review focuses on spontaneous mutations that may occur during DNA replication, the fundamental process responsible for transferring genetic information. In 1963, Löwdin postulated that these mutations are primarily a result of proton transfer reactions within the hydrogen-bonded DNA base pairs. The single and double proton transfer reactions within the base pairs in DNA result in zwitterions and rare tautomers, respectively. For persistent mutations, these products must be generated at high rates and should be thermodynamically stable. This review covers the proton transfer reactions studied experimentally and computationally. The review also examines the influence of externally applied electric fields on the thermodynamics and kinetics of proton transfer reactions within DNA base pairs, and their biological implications.

Preparation and characterization of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)/cellulose nanofiber/Aloe Vera composites as a biocompatible hydrating facial mask

This study aimed to enhance the properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for use as biocompatible facial masks. To achieve this, nanofibers were developed by blending PVP with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and Aloe vera (AV) powder using electrospinning. The results showed that incorporating CNFs and AV into the PVP matrix led to the formation of smooth and uniform nanofibers. In particular, adding 3-6 wt% AV powder in PVP/CNF composites improved fiber diameter distribution and uniformity compared to pure PVP. The PVP/CNF/AV nanofibers exhibited desirable properties for facial mask applications. They displayed 86-93 % porosity, which allowed for efficient moisture absorption capacity of up to 1829 %, and excellent water vapor permeability rate of 3.92 g/m2h. The mechanical properties of the electrospun nanofiber composites were evaluated through tensile testing. The results showed that Young's modulus values decreased progressively with the addition of CNFs and AV powder to the PVP polymer matrix, indicating a plasticizing effect that enhances flexibility. The fracture strain remained similar across all composites, suggesting that CNFs and AV did not significantly weaken the PVP matrix. The tensile strength initially increased with CNF addition but decreased with incremental AV loading. Biocompatibility studies revealed that all nanofibers exhibited excellent fibroblast viability, surpassing 98 %. This indicates that incorporating CNFs and AV did not compromise cell viability, further highlighting the suitability of the PVP/CNF/AV composites for facial mask applications.

From lab to wearables: Innovations in multifunctional hydrogel chemistry for next-generation bioelectronic devices

Their significance stems from their resemblance to biological tissue and their exceptional versatility in electrical, mechanical, and biofunctional engineering, positioning themselves as a bridge between living organisms and electronic systems, paving the way for the development of highly compatible, efficient, and stable interfaces. These multifaceted capability revolutionizes the essence of hydrogel-based wearable devices, distinguishing them from conventional biomedical devices in real-world practical applications. In this comprehensive review, we first discuss the fundamental chemistry of hydrogels, elucidating their distinct properties and functionalities. Subsequently, we examine the applications of these bioelectronics within the human body, unveiling their transformative potential in diagnostics, therapy, and human-machine interfaces (HMI) in real wearable bioelectronics. This exploration serves as a scientific compass for researchers navigating the interdisciplinary landscape of chemistry, materials science, and bioelectronics.

Evaluating the polymerization effectiveness and biocompatibility of bio-sourced, visible light-based photoinitiator systems

The use of photopolymerization is expanding across a multitude of biomedical applications, from drug delivery to bioprinting. Many of these current and emerging photopolymerization systems employ visible light, as motivated by safety and energy efficiency considerations. However, the "library" of visible light initiators is limited compared with the wealth of options available for UV polymerization. Furthermore, the synthesis of traditional photoinitiators relies on diminishing raw materials, and several traditional photoinitiators are considered emerging environmental contaminants. As such, there has been recent focus on identifying and characterizing biologically sourced, visible light-based photoinitiator systems that can be effectively used in photopolymerization applications. In this regard, several bio-sourced molecules have been shown to act as photoinitiators, primarily through Type II photoinitiation mechanisms. However, whether bio-sourced molecules can also act as effective synergists in these reactions remains unknown. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of bio-sourced synergist candidates, with a focus on amino acids, due to their amine functional groups, in combination with two bio-sourced photoinitiator molecules: riboflavin and curcumin. We tested the effectiveness of these photoinitiator systems under both violet (405 nm) and blue (460-475 nm) light using photo-rheology. We found that several synergist candidates, namely lysine, arginine, and histidine, increased the polymerization effectiveness of riboflavin when used with both violet and blue light. With curcumin, we found that almost all tested synergist candidates slightly decreased the polymerization effectiveness compared with curcumin alone under both light sources. These results show that bio-sourced molecules have the potential to be used as synergists with bio-sourced photoinitiators in visible light photopolymerization. However, more work must be done to fully characterize these reactions and to investigate more synergist candidates. Ultimately, this information is expected to expand the range of available visible light-based photoinitiator systems and increase their sustainability.

Chromenone: An emerging scaffold in anti-Alzheimer drug discovery

Alzheimer's disease (AD) presents a growing global health concern. In recent decades, natural and synthetic chromenone have emerged as promising drug candidates due to their multi-target potential. Natural chromenone, quercetin, scopoletin, esculetin, coumestrol, umbelliferone, bergapten, and methoxsalen (xanthotoxin), and synthetic chromenone hybrids comprising structures like acridine, 4-aminophenyl, 3-arylcoumarins, quinoline, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 1,2,3-triazole, and tacrine, have been explored for their potential to combat AD. Key reactions used for synthesis of chromenone hybrids include Perkin and Pechmann condensation. The activity of chromenone hybrids has been reported against several drug targets, including AChE, BuChE, BACE-1, and MAO-A/B. This review comprehensively explores natural, semisynthetic, and synthetic chromenone, elucidating their synthetic routes, possible mode of action/drug targets and structure-activity relationships (SAR). The acquired knowledge provides valuable insights for the development of new chromenone hybrids against AD.

Bacterial valorization of agricultural-waste into a nano-sized cellulosic matrix for mitigating emerging pharmaceutical pollutants: An eco-benign approach

For Bacterial Nanocellulose (BNC) production, standard methods are well-established, but there is a pressing need to explore cost-effective alternatives for BNC commercialization. This study investigates the feasibility of using syrup prepared from maize stalk as a valuable nutrient and sustainable carbon source for BNC production. Our study achieved a remarkable BNC production yield of 19.457 g L-1 by utilizing Komagataeibacter saccharivorans NUWB1 in combination with components from the Hestrin-Schramm (HS) medium. Physicochemical properties revealed that the obtained BNC exhibited a crystallinity index of 60.5 %, tensile strength of 43.5 MPa along with enhanced thermostability reaching up to 360 °C. N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm of the BNC displayed characteristics of type IV, indicating the presence of a mesoporous structure. The produced BNC underwent thorough investigation, focusing on its efficacy in addressing environmental concerns, particularly in removing emerging pharmaceutical pollutants like Metformin and Paracetamol. Remarkably, the BNC exhibited strong adsorption capabilities, aligning with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. Furthermore, the BNC showed potential for regeneration, enabling up to five recycling cycles. Cytotoxicity and oxidative stress assays validated the biocompatibility of BNC. Lastly, the BNC films displayed an impressive 88.73 % biodegradation within 21 days.

The cytoplasmic tail of myelin protein zero induces morphological changes in lipid membranes

The major myelin protein expressed by the peripheral nervous system Schwann cells is protein zero (P0), which represents 50% of the total protein content in myelin. This 30-kDa integral membrane protein consists of an immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain, a transmembrane helix, and a 69-residue C-terminal cytoplasmic tail (P0ct). The basic residues in P0ct contribute to the tight packing of myelin lipid bilayers, and alterations in the tail affect how P0 functions as an adhesion molecule necessary for the stability of compact myelin. Several neurodegenerative neuropathies are related to P0, including the more common Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) and Dejerine-Sottas syndrome (DSS) as well as rare cases of motor and sensory polyneuropathy. We found that high P0ct concentrations affected the membrane properties of bicelles and induced a lamellar-to-inverted hexagonal phase transition, which caused bicelles to fuse into long, protein-containing filament-like structures. These structures likely reflect the formation of semicrystalline lipid domains with potential relevance for myelination. Not only is P0ct important for stacking lipid membranes, but time-lapse fluorescence microscopy also shows that it might affect membrane properties during myelination. We further describe recombinant production and low-resolution structural characterization of full-length human P0. Our findings shed light on P0ct effects on membrane properties, and with the successful purification of full-length P0, we have new tools to study the role of P0 in myelin formation and maintenance in vitro.

Evaluation of polymersome permeability as a fundamental aspect towards the development of artificial cells and nanofactories

Polymersomes are synthetic vesicles with potential use in healthcare, chemical transformations in confined environment (nanofactories), and in the construction of artificial cells and organelles. In this framework, one of the most important features of such supramolecular structures is the permeability behavior allowing for selective control of mass exchange between the inner and outer compartments. The use of biological and synthetic nanopores in this regard is the most common strategy to impart permeability nevertheless, this typically requires fairly complex strategies to enable porosity. Yet, investigations concerning the permeability of polymer vesicles to different analytes still requires further exploration and, taking these considerations into account, we have detailed investigated the permeability behavior of a variety of polymersomes with regard to different analytes (water, protons, and rhodamine B) which were selected as models for solvents, ions, and small molecules. Polymersomes based on hydrophilic blocks of poly[N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide] (PHPMA) or PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)) linked to the non-responsive blocks poly[N-(4-isopropylphenylacetamide)ethyl methacrylate] (PPPhA) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or to the stimuli pH-responsive block poly[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDPA) have been investigated. Interestingly, the produced PEO-based vesicles are notably larger than the ones produced using PHPMA-containing block copolymers. The experimental results reveal that all the vesicles are inherently permeable to some extent with permeability behavior following exponential profiles. Nevertheless, polymersomes based on PMMA as the hydrophobic component were demonstrated to be the least permeable to the small molecule rhodamine B as well as to water. The synthetic vesicles based on the pH-responsive PDPA block exhibited restrictive and notably slow proton permeability as attributed to partial chain protonation upon acidification of the medium. The dye permeability was evidenced to be much slower than ion or solvent diffusion, and in the case of pH-responsive assemblies, it was demonstrated to also depend on the ionic strength of the environment. These findings are understood to be highly relevant towards polymer selection for the production of synthetic vesicles with selective and time-dependent permeability, and it may thus contribute in advancing biomimicry and nanomedicine.

Lignin-derivable block copolymer micelle for effectively reinforcing and toughening polylactic acid

The development of high-performance biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) materials integrating high strength, malleability and toughness is desired but an ongoing challenge. In this work, a novel full-biobased block copolymer was designed and synthesized by grafting L (+)-lactide (L-LA) and ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) onto lignin via ring-opening polymerization. The obtained lignin-PLA-PCL block copolymer was composed of rigid lignin and poly (LA-CL) rubber segment, could self-assemble into uniform nano-micelles with average diameters of 80-100 nm regulated by simply altering copolymer content. The incorporation of lignin-PLA-PCL copolymers into PLA matrix induced the formation of many cavities, promoted free volume between PLA matrix and copolymer to accelerate chain mobility, achieving excellent ductility and stretchability with maximum stretching deformation of 64.8 %. The resultant PLA composites with the copolymer content as low as 5 wt% displayed simultaneously improved strength (41.84 MPa) and toughness (8.1 MJ/m3), 6.7 % and 1520 % increment than those of neat PLA, respectively. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms were explored and verified that the combination of cavity growth and fibrillation, followed by extensive shear yielding of matrix, causing substantial plastic deformation. This study extended the design strategy and the foundation for simultaneous reinforcing and toughening PLA plastics using lignin-derived rubbery micelles.

Size exclusion chromatography and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation for structural characterization of polysaccharides: A comparative review

Natural polysaccharides exhibit a wide range of biological activities, which are closely related to their structural characteristics, including their molecular weight distribution, size, monosaccharide composition, glycosidic bond types and spatial conformation, etc. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4), as two potent separation techniques, both harbor potential for continuous development and enhancement. This manuscript reviewed the fundamental principles and separation applications of SEC and AF4. The structural information and spatial conformation of polysaccharides can be obtained using SEC or AF4 coupled with multiple detectors. In addition, this manuscript elaborates in detail on the shear degradation of samples such as polysaccharides separated by SEC. In addition, the abnormal elution that occurs during the application of the two methods is also discussed. Both SEC and AF4 possess considerable potential for ongoing development and refinement, thereby offering increased possibilities and opportunities for polysaccharide separation and characterization.

Nanoscopic gel particle for intra-articular injection formulation

Hyaluronic acid (HA) based nanogels showed effective intracellular delivery efficacy for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory drugs, characterized by their ability targeting relevant cell receptors. In the present study, we demonstrate the ability of hyaluronic acid-polyethyleneimine (HA-PEI) nanogels as a promising dual-functional interfacial active for intra-articular injection to intervene arthritis. Nanomechanical measurements on both model substrates and human cartilage samples confirm that the HA-PEI nanogels can significantly improve interfacial lubrication, in comparison to HA molecules, or silica-based nanoparticles. We show that the Coefficient of Friction significantly decreases with a decreasing nanogel size. The exceptional lubricating performance, coupled with the proven drug delivery capability, evidences the great potential of nanoscopic hydrogels for early-stage arthritis treatment. The flexibility in choosing the chemical nature, molecular architecture, and structural characteristics of nanogels makes it possible to modulate both drug delivery kinetics and interfacial lubrication, thus representing an innovative approach to treat degenerative joint diseases.

Renewable hemicellulose-based materials for value-added applications

The importance of renewable resources and environmentally friendly materials has grown globally in recent time. Hemicellulose is renewable lignocellulosic materials that have been the subject of substantial valorisation research. Due to its distinctive benefits, including its wide availability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, simplicity of chemical modification, etc., it has attracted increasing interest in a number of value-added fields. In this review, a systematic summarizes of the structure, extraction method, and characterization technique for hemicellulose-based materials was carried out. Also, their most current developments in a variety of value-added adsorbents, biomedical, energy-related, 3D-printed materials, sensors, food packaging applications were discussed. Additionally, the most recent challenges and prospects of hemicellulose-based materials are emphasized and examined in-depth. It is anticipated that in the near future, persistent scientific efforts will enable the renewable hemicellulose-based products to achieve practical applications.

SI-ATRP grafting of polymers from polydopamine-modified cellulose nanocrystals

This work reports on the possibility of using polydopamine (PDA) as a tool to immobilize bromoisobutyryl moieties at the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and initiate Surface Intitiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-ATRP) reactions from these sites. Two different strategies based on i) the stepwise modification of the CNCs with dopamine (DA) and α-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BiBB) (Protocol 1) and ii) the one-step treatment of the CNCs with a mixture of DA and BiBB-modified DA (Protocol 2), were compared. Only the CNC particles treated according to Protocol 1 guaranteed efficient anchoring of the SI-ATRP initiating sites in our experimental conditions (with limited impact on the CNCs crystalline structure), the coated layer being leached out by certain solvents in the case of Protocol 2. The brominated particles displaying the best performances were subsequently tested as potential ATRP macroinitiators, using methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) as model monomers. Polymer-grafted particles were successfully obtained, with a grafting density twice as high for Sty as for MMA, demonstrating the validity of this strategy.

Customizable BAC-based DNA markers for pulsed-field gel electrophoresis

DNA markers are used as a size reference and sample loading control during gel electrophoresis. Most markers are designed for conventional gel electrophoresis to separate DNA smaller than 20 kb. For larger molecules, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) marker is required. Limited PFGE markers are available because large DNA are prone to nicking and degradation, causing smeary bands. Here, we developed a robust marker based on bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) with bands up to 184 kb. This marker could consistently confer intense and distinct bands for accurate gel analysis in molecular biology studies, laboratory validations or clinical diagnosis.

Microwave pyrolysis of polypropylene, and high-density polyethylene, and catalytic gasification of waste coffee pods to hydrogen-rich gas

Plastic waste poses a critical environmental challenge for the world. The proliferation of waste plastic coffee pods exacerbates this issue. Traditional disposal methods such as incineration and landfills are environmentally unfriendly, necessitating the exploration of alternative management strategies. One promising avenue is the pyrolysis in-line reforming process, which converts plastic waste into hydrogen. However, traditional pyrolysis methods are costly due to inefficiencies and heat losses. To address this, for the first time, our study investigates the use of microwave to enhance the pyrolysis process. We explored microwave pyrolysis for polypropylene (PP), high-density polypropylene (HDPE), and waste coffee pods, with the latter primarily comprising polypropylene. Additionally, catalytic ex-situ pyrolysis of coffee pod pyrolysis over a nickel-based catalyst was investigated to convert the evolved gas into hydrogen. The single-stage microwave pyrolysis results revealed the highest gas yield at 500 °C for HDPE, and 41 % and 58 % (by mass) for waste coffee pods and polypropylene at 700 °C, respectively. Polypropylene exhibited the highest gaseous yield, suggesting its readiness for pyrolytic degradation. Waste coffee pods uniquely produced carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gases because of the oxygen present in their structure. Catalytic reforming of evolved gas from waste coffee pods using a 5 % nickel loaded activated carbon catalyst, yielded 76 % (by volume) hydrogen at 900 °C. These observed results were supported by elemental balance analysis. These findings highlight that two-stage microwave and catalysis assisted pyrolysis could be a promising method for the efficient management of waste coffee pods, particularly for producing clean energy.

Electrospun high hydrophilicity antimicrobial poly (lactic acid)/silk fibroin nanofiber membrane for wound dressings

Antimicrobial wound dressings can aid wound healing by preventing bacterial infection. This is particularly true of electrospun ones, which have a porous structure and can be easily loaded with antimicrobial drugs. Here, Poly lactic acid (PLA), Silk Fibroin (SF) and antimicrobial agents of Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Silver oxide (Ag2O) to prepare the PLA/SF composites antimicrobial nanofiber membrane by electrospinning. The PLA with 30 % SF nanofiber membrane show the water vapor permeability (WVP) and the liquid absorption of 36 g·mm/(m2·d·kPa) and 1721 %. With the increasing of SF contents, the degradation rate and surface hydrophilicity of the nanofiber membrane increase significantly. The nanofiber membrane exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) with the inhibition circle reach at 18.2 mm. The resultant nanofiber membrane showed high cytosolic activity, good cytocompatibility and strong antimicrobial ability, which laid a theoretical foundation for the construction of a new PLA/SF composites antimicrobial fiber membrane.

Insight into divergent chemical modifications of chitosan biopolymer: Review

Chitosan is used in many applications due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, nontoxicity, nonadhesiveness, and film-forming capabilities. Chitosan has antibacterial and antifungal activities, which are two of its other desirable attributes. However, chitosan can only dissolve in acidic liquids (1-3 % acetic acid), limiting its practical application. The hydroxyl and amino functional groups in the chitosan backbone are essential for chemical modification, which is a viable alternative for overcoming this obstacle. So, N- or O-, and N, O-substituted chitosan may yield derivatives with increased water solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bio-evaluation. In the same manner, the physicochemical properties of chitosan, including its mechanical and thermal properties, can be improved by cross-linking reactions. This review provides an overview of chitosan, including its origins and their solubility. Also, the review extend and discuss in details most of all chemical reactions that happened on the amino group, hydroxyl group, or both amino group and hydroxyl group to create modified chitosan-based organic materials. Finally, the problems that still need to be solved and probable future areas for study are discussed.

Dimerization and liquid-liquid phase separation of the nonrepetitive domains of pyriform spidroin 1 controls the pyriform silk formation

Spiders spin high performance silks with diverse mechanical properties for specific biological functions. Of these spider silk types, pyriform silk stands out as a unique combination of wet glue and dry fibers. Investigation of self-assembly process of spider silk proteins is necessary for elucidating the silk formation mechanism. However, the functions of nonrepetitive domains in the silk formation of pyriform spidroins from liquid proteins to solid fibers are still unclear, making it difficult to achieve efficient biomimetic preparations of pyriform silk with good mechanical properties. In this study, we investigate the roles of the N-linker repeat (NLR) and both terminal domains of pyriform spidroin 1 (PySp1) in the silk formation. We demonstrate for the first time that the PySp1 NLR alone is sufficient to self-assemble into high strength fibers. Moreover, we showed that the ability to promote the pyriform silk formation by the addition of the NLR. We also found that the pH-sensitive dimerization property for N-terminal domain and the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) coupled with acidification triggers the self-assembly mediated by the C-terminal domain. Overall, our results provide new insight into the role of nonrepetitive domains in the pyriform silk formation mechanism and the basis for producing new protein-based materials derived from spider pyriform silk.

Comprehensive rheological analysis of structurally related acetan-like heteroexopolysaccharides from two Kozakia baliensis strains in surfactants and galactomannan blends

Natural biopolymers become increasingly attractive as bio-based alternatives to petrol-based rheological modifiers, especially in personal care applications. However, many polysaccharides exhibit undesired properties in cosmetic applications such as limited viscosifying characteristics, unpleasant sensory properties, or incompatibility with certain formulation compounds. Here, a comprehensive rheological analysis of non-decorated acetan-like heteroexopolysaccharides derived from two Kozakia baliensis strains was performed in selected surfactant formulations. The results were compared to native xanthan gum and a genetically engineered xanthan variant, Xan∆gumFGL, which lacks any acetyl- and pyruvyl moieties and whose rheological properties are unaffected by saline environments. All four polysaccharides displayed a highly similar rheological performance in the non-ionic surfactant lauryl glucoside, while the rheological properties differed in amphoteric and anionic surfactants cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium laureth sulfate due to minor changes in side chain composition. Polysaccharide precipitation was observed in the presence of the cationic surfactant. Nevertheless, the native heteroexopolysaccharide derived from K. baliensis LMG 27018 shows significant potential as a salt-independent rheological modifier compared to the genetically engineered Xan∆gumFGL variant. In addition, blends of heteroexopolysaccharides from K. baliensis and several galactomannans displayed synergistic effects which were comparable to native xanthan gum-galactomannan blends. This study shows that heteroexopolysaccharides of K. baliensis are capable of further extending the portfolio of bio-based rheological modifiers.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes as near-infrared fluorescent probes for bio-inspired supramolecular self-assembled hydrogels

Hydrogels derived from fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-conjugated amino acids and peptides demonstrate remarkable potential in biomedical applications, including drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and tissue engineering. These hydrogels can be injectable, offering a minimally invasive approach to hydrogel implantation. Given their potential for prolonged application, there is a need for non-destructive evaluation of their properties over extended periods. Thus, we introduce a hydrogel characterization platform employing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes. Our approach involves generating supramolecular self-assembling hydrogels from aromatic Fmoc-amino acids. Integrating SWCNTs into the hydrogels maintains their structural and mechanical properties, establishing SWCNTs as optical probes for hydrogels. We demonstrate that the SWCNT NIR-fluorescence changes during the gelation process correlate to rheological changes within the hydrogels. Additionally, single particle tracking of SWCNTs incorporated in the hydrogels provides insights into differences in hydrogel morphologies. Furthermore, the disassembly process of the hydrogels can be monitored through the SWCNT fluorescence modulation. The unique attribute of SWCNTs as non-photobleaching fluorescent sensors, emitting at the biologically transparent window, offers a non-destructive method for studying hydrogel dynamics over extended periods. This platform could be applied to a wide range of self-assembling hydrogels to advance our understanding and applications of supramolecular assembly technologies.

Using ion mobility spectrometry to understand signal dilution during tandem mass spectrometry sequencing of digital polymers: Experimental evidence of intramolecular cyclization

RATIONALE

Optimizing the structure of digital polymers is an efficient strategy to ensure their tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) readability. In block-truncated poly(phosphodiester)s, homolysis of C-ON bonds in long chains permits the release of smaller blocks amenable to sequencing. Yet the dissociation behavior of diradical blocks was observed to strongly depend on their charge state.

METHODS

Polymers were ionized in negative mode electrospray and activated in-source so that blocks released as primary fragments can be investigated using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) or sequenced in the post-IMS collision cell. Collision cross sections (CCS) were derived from arrival times using a calibration procedure developed for polyanions using the IMSCal software. A multistep protocol based on quantum methods and classical molecular dynamics was implemented for molecular modeling and calculation of theoretical CCS.

RESULTS

Unlike their triply charged homologues, dissociation of diradical blocks at the 2- charge state produces additional fragments, with +1 m/z shift for those holding the nitroxide α-termination and -1 m/z for those containing the carbon-centered radical ω-end. These results suggest cyclization of these diradical species, followed by H• transfer on activated reopening of this cycle. This assumption was validated using IMS resolution of the cyclic/linear isomers and supported by molecular modeling.

CONCLUSIONS

Combining IMS with molecular modeling provided new insights into how the charge state of digital blocks influences their dissociation. These results permit to define new guidelines to improve either ionization conditions or the structural design of these digital polymers for best MS/MS readability.

Poly(ethylene oxide)-based composite solid electrolyte for long cycle life solid-state lithium metal batteries: Improvement of interface stability through a dual mechanism

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) are promising candidates for safe and high-energy-density next-generation applications. However, harmful interfacial decomposition and uneven Li deposition lead to poor ion transport, a short cycle life, and battery failure. Herein, we propose a novel poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite solid electrolyte (CSE) containing succinonitrile (SN) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs), which improves interface stability through a dual mechanism. (1) By anchoring bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anions to ZnO, a reliable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) later with abundant LiF can be obtained to inhibit interface decomposition. (2) The immobilization of escaping SN molecules in the SEI layer by ZnO NPs promotes the self-polymerization of SN and facilitates charge transfer through the interface. As a result, the ion conductivity of the stainless steel-symmetrical battery reaches 1.1 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature, and a LiFePO4 (LFP) full battery exhibits ultrahigh stability (800 cycles) at 0.5 C. Thus, the present study provides valuable insights for the development of advanced PEO-based SSLMBs.

Zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-based hydrogels with high toughness, ionic conductivity, and healable capability in cryogenic environments

Extreme environmental conditions often lead to irreversible structural failure and functional degradation in hydrogels, limiting their service life and applicability. Achieving high toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity in cryogenic environments is vital to broaden their applications. Herein, we present a novel approach to simultaneously enhance the toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity of hydrogels, via inducing non-freezable water within the zwitterionic cellulose-based hydrogel skeleton. This approach enables resulting hydrogel to achieve an exceptional toughness of 10.8 MJ m-3, rapid self-healing capability (98.9 % in 30 min), and high ionic conductivity (2.9 S m-1), even when subjected to -40 °C, superior to the state-of-the-art hydrogels. Mechanism analyses reveal that a significant amount of non-freezable water with robust electrostatic interactions is formed within zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-modified polyurethane molecular networks, imparting superior freezing tolerance and versatility to the hydrogel. Importantly, this strategy harnesses the non-freezable water molecular state of the zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers network, eliminating the need for additional antifreeze and organic solvents. Furthermore, the dynamic Zn coordination within these supramolecular molecule chains enhances interfacial interactions, thereby promoting rapid subzero self-healing and exceptional mechanical strength. Demonstrating its potential, this hydrogel can be used in smart laminated materials, such as aircraft windshields.

Phosphorous speciation in EPS extracted from Aerobic Granular Sludge

Wastewater treatment technologies opened the door for recovery of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), presenting novel opportunities for use across diverse industrial sectors. Earlier studies showed that a significant amount of phosphorus (P) is recovered within extracted EPS. P recovered within the extracted EPS is an intrinsic part of the recovered material that potentially influences its properties. Understanding the P speciation in extracted EPS lays the foundation for leveraging the incorporated P in EPS to manipulate its properties and industrial applications. This study evaluated P speciation in EPS extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS). A fractionation lab protocol was established to consistently distinguish P species in extracted EPS liquid phase and polymer chains. 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used as a complementary technique to provide additional information on P speciation and track changes in P species during the EPS extraction process. Findings showed the dominance of organic phosphorus and orthophosphates within EPS, besides other minor fractions. On average, 25% orthophosphates in the polymer liquid phase, 52% organic phosphorus (equal ratio of mono and diesters) covalently bound to the polymer chains, 16% non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) precipitates mainly FeP and AlP, and 7% pyrophosphates (6% in the liquid phase and 1% attached to the polymer chains) were identified. Polyphosphates were detected in initial AGS but hydrolyzed to orthophosphates, pyrophosphates, and possibly organic P (forming new esters) during the EPS extraction process. The knowledge created in this study is a step towards the goal of EPS engineering, manipulating P chemistry along the extraction process and enriching certain P species in EPS based on target properties and industrial applications.

Bio-based epoxy resin/carbon nanotube coatings applied on cotton fabrics for smart wearable systems

Electroactive coatings for smart wearable textiles based on a furan bio-epoxy monomer (BOMF) crosslinked with isophorone diamine (IPD) and additivated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reported herein. The effect of BOMF/IPD molar ratio on the curing reaction, as well as on the properties of the crosslinked resins was first assessed, and it was found that 1.5:1 BOMF/IPD molar ratio provided higher heat of reaction, glass transition temperature, and mechanical performance. The resin was then modified with CNT to prepare electrically conductive nanocomposite films, which exhibited conductivity values increased by eight orders of magnitude upon addition of 5 phr of CNTs. The epoxy/CNT nanocomposites were finally applied as coatings onto a cotton fabric to develop electrically conductive, hydrophobic and breathable textiles. Notably, the integration of CNTs imparted efficient and reversible electrothermal behavior to the cotton fabric, showcasing its potential application in smart and comfortable wearable electronic devices.

Water-dependent effects of biodegradable microplastics on arsenic fractionation in soil: Insights from enzyme degradation and synchrotron-based X-ray analysis

The abundance of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) is increasing in soil due to the widespread use of biodegradable plastics. However, the influence of BMPs on soil metal biogeochemistry, especially arsenic (As), under different water regimes is still unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of two types of BMPs (PLA-MPs and PBAT-MPs) on As fractionation in two types of soils (black soil and fluvo-aquic soil) under three water regimes including drying (Dry), flooding (FL), and alternate wetting and drying (AWD). The results show that BMPs had limited indirect effects on As fractionation by altering soil properties, but had direct effects by adsorbing and releasing As during their degradation. Enzyme degradation experiments show that the degradation of PLA-MPs led to an increased desorption of 4.76 % for As(III) and 15.74 % for As(V). Synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) combined with micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure (μ-XANES) analysis show that under Dry and AWD conditions, As on the BMPs primarily bind with Fe hydrated oxides in the form of As(V). Conversely, 71.57 % of As on PBAT-MP under FL conditions is in the form of As(III) and is primarily directly adsorbed onto its surface. This study highlights the role of BMPs in soil metal biogeochemistry.

Removal of manganese (Mn2+) from water samples using a biocomposite sorbent

Herein, tannic acid-tethered cellulose was developed as an efficient and selective sorbent for Mn2⁺ removal from aqueous solutions. The modified cellulose was characterized through scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. Sorption performance was evaluated using various parameters, including pH, initial Mn2⁺ concentration, contact time, and the presence of interfering ions. Results indicated that Mn2⁺ removal was highly pH-dependent, with removal efficiency increasing from 8% at pH 2 to99% at pH 9, achieving a remarkable 99% removal rate within only 30 min, highlighting the rapidity of the cellulose sorption kinetics. The results of isotherm studies confirmed that the sorption conformed to the Langmuir model with a monolayer sorption mechanism. Using a sorbent dose of 0.05 g, 99% of Mn2⁺ could be effectively eliminated from water, achieving a maximum sorption capacity of 32.2 mg/g dry-sorbent. The modified cellulose could be effectively regenerated using 0.5-M HCl or 0.1-M H₂SO₄, with no considerable deterioration in sorption performance after three sorption-regeneration cycles. The presence of Na⁺ and K⁺ had minimal impact on Mn2⁺ removal, whereas the presence of Ca2⁺ and Mg2⁺ at low concentrations facilitated moderate-level Mn2⁺ removal.

A new 3D printing strategy by enhancing shear-induced alignment of gelled nanomaterial inks resulting in stronger and ductile cellulose films

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are derived from biomass and have significant potential as fossil-based plastic alternatives used in disposable electronics. Controlling the nanostructure of fibrils is the key to obtaining strong mechanical properties and high optical transparency. Vacuum filtration is usually used to prepare the CNFs film in the literature; however, such a process cannot control the structure of the CNFs film, which limits the transparency and mechanical strength of the film. Here, direct ink writing (DIW), a pressure-controlled extrusion process, is proposed to fabricate the CNFs film, which can significantly harness the alignment of fibrils by exerting shear stress force on the filaments. The printed films by DIW have a compact structure, and the degree of fibril alignment quantified by the small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS) increases by 24 % compared to the vacuum filtration process. Such a process favors the establishment of the chemical bond (or interaction) between molecules, therefore leading to considerably high tensile strength (245 ± 8 MPa), elongation at break (2.2 ± 0.5 %), and good transparency. Thus, proposed DIW provides a new strategy for fabricating aligned CNFs films in a controlled manner with tunable macroscale properties. Moreover, this work provides theoretical guidance for employing CNFs as structural and reinforcing materials to design disposable electronics.

BhrPETase catalyzed polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization: A quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used material in our daily life, particularly in areas such as packaging, fibers, and engineering plastics. However, PET waste can accumulate in the environment and pose a great threat to our ecosystem. Recently enzymatic conversion has emerged as an efficient and green strategy to address the PET crisis. Here, using a theoretical approach combining molecular dynamics simulation and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations, the depolymerization mechanism of the thermophilic cutinase BhrPETase was fully deciphered. Surprisingly, unlike the previously studied cutinase LCCICCG, our results indicate that the first step, catalytic triad assisted nucleophilic attack, is the rate-determining step. The corresponding Boltzmann weighted average energy barrier is 18.2 kcal/mol. Through extensive comparison between BhrPETase and LCCICCG, we evidence that key features like charge CHis@N1 and angle APET@C1-Ser@O1-His@H1 significantly impact the depolymerization efficiency of BhrPETase. Non-covalent bond interaction and distortion/interaction analysis inform new insights on enzyme engineer and may aid the recycling of enzymatic PET waste. This study will aid the advancement of the plastic bio-recycling economy and promote resource conservation and reuse.

Surface-programmed microbiome assembly in phycosphere to microplastics contamination

Recalcitrance in microplastics accounts for ubiquitous white pollution. Of special interest are the capabilities of microorganisms to accelerate their degradation sustainably. Compared to the well-studied pure cultures in degrading natural polymers, the algal-bacterial symbiotic system is considered as a promising candidate for microplastics removal, cascading bottom-up impacts on ecosystem-scale processes. This study selected and enriched the algae-associated microbial communities hosted by the indigenous isolation Desmodesmus sp. in wastewater treatment plants with micro-polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, and polystyrene contamination. Results elaborated that multiple settled and specific affiliates were recruited by the uniform algae protagonist from the biosphere under manifold microplastic stress. Alteration of distinct chemical functionalities and deformation of polymers provide direct evidence of degradation in phycosphere under illumination. Microplastic-induced phycosphere-derived DOM created spatial gradients of aromatic protein, fulvic and humic acid-like and tryptophan components to expanded niche-width. Surface thermodynamic analysis was conducted to simulate the reciprocal and reversible interaction on algal-bacterial and phycosphere-microplastic interface, revealing the enhancement of transition to stable and irreversible aggregation for functional microbiota colonization and microplastics capture. Furthermore, pangenomic analysis disclosed the genes related to the chemotaxis and the proposed microplastics biodegradation pathway in enriched algal-bacterial microbiome, orchestrating the evidence for common synthetic polymer particles and ultimately to confirm the effectiveness and potential. The present study emphasizes the necessity for future endeavors aimed at fully leveraging the potential of algal-bacterial mutualistic systems within sustainable bioremediation strategies targeting the eradication of microplastic waste.

Photo-responsive supramolecular polymer bottle-brushes: The key role of the solvent on self-assembly and responsiveness

HYPOTHESIS

Supramolecular polymer bottlebrushes (SPBs) consist in the 1D self-assembly of building blocks composed of a self-assembling core with pendant polymer arms. Kinetic hurdles often hinder their stimuli-responsiveness in solution. Changing the nature of the solvent should alleviate these hurdles by modulating the self-association strength, leading to stimuli-responsive SPBs.

EXPERIMENTS

The SPBs were formed, in various solvents, by hydrogen bond-driven self-assembly of an azobenzene-bisurea decorated with poly(ethylene oxide) polymer arms. The photo-isomerization of the azobenzene unit was studied by UV/visible spectroscopy and proton NMR spectroscopy, whereas the consequences on supramolecular self-assembly were studied by small angle neutron and X-ray scattering.

FINDINGS

In water, the assembly was previously shown to be driven by both hydrogen-bonds and strong hydrophobic effects, the latter rendering the system kinetically frozen and the disassembly irreversible. Here we show that in organic solvents such as toluene or chloroform, reversible light-responsive dissociation is achieved. Solvophobic effects in these solvents are expected to be much weaker than in water, which probably allows reversibility of the light-response in the former solvents. The key role of the solvent on the reversibility of the process opens up new perspectives for the design of stimuli-responsive SPBs and their applications in various fields.

Quantitative analysis of molecular interactions in κ-carrageenan-Isovanillin biocomposite for biodegradable packaging and pharmaceutical applications using NMR, TOF-SIMS, and XPS approach

This study explores the molecular interactions and structural changes in κ-carrageenan crosslinked with isovanillin to create a biocomposite material suitable for hard capsule and bio-degradable packaging applications. Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy revealed chemical changes in the conjugate molecule, indicating improved electronegativity due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between κ-carrageenan and isovanillin. Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis revealed enhanced ion intensity due to intermolecular interactions, particularly between sulphate and hydrogen ions. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) study demonstrated that κ-carrageenan and isovanillin form stronger hydrogen bonds, with a shift in binding energy indicating higher electronegativity. These findings shed light on the molecular mechanisms that underpin the formation of the biocomposite material, as well as its potential for use in hard capsule and biodegradable packaging materials, addressing the need for sustainable alternatives in the pharmaceutical and packaging industries while also contributing to environmental conservation.

Stable organic radical qubits and their applications in quantum information science

The past century has witnessed the flourishing of organic radical chemistry. Stable organic radicals are highly valuable for quantum technologies thanks to their inherent room temperature quantum coherence, atomic-level designability, and fine tunability. In this comprehensive review, we highlight the potential of stable organic radicals as high-temperature qubits and explore their applications in quantum information science, which remain largely underexplored. Firstly, we summarize known spin dynamic properties of stable organic radicals and examine factors that influence their electron spin relaxation and decoherence times. This examination reveals their design principles and optimal operating conditions. We further discuss their integration in solid-state materials and surface structures, and present their state-of-the-art applications in quantum computing, quantum memory, and quantum sensing. Finally, we analyze the primary challenges associated with stable organic radical qubits and provide tentative insights to future research directions.

Conversion of toxic pyrogenic products into syngas through catalytic pyrolysis of insulation material waste under the presence of CO2

Plastic-based insulation materials have been widely employed owing to their exceptional durability, cost-effectiveness, low weight, and low thermal conductivity. Nevertheless, the disposal of the insulation material waste (IMW) within construction waste and its recycling and recovery are challenging. Meanwhile, landfilling or incineration methods can release toxic chemicals into the environment. Consequently, the accumulation of IMW in construction waste has become a pressing environmental concern. To address this issue, this paper proposes a pyrolysis platform as a disposal management method for IMW that employs CO2 as a reactive medium. IMW composed of polystyrene in the form of extruded polystyrene underwent pyrolysis to yield pyrogenic products containing toxic chemicals. These toxic chemicals were subsequently transformed into syngas via homogeneous reactions with CO2 under certain thermal conditions and Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. This resulted in a significant reduction in the total peak areas of toxic substances in the pyrogenic oil compared with that obtained using N2 as a medium. Furthermore, the efficacy of CO2 was demonstrated to increase with an increase in the atmospheric concentration. This study implied that catalytic pyrolysis under CO2 conditions is a potential platform for converting toxic chemicals from IMW into syngas through homogeneous reactions with CO2.

pH-induced fluorescent active sodium alginate-based ionically conjugated and REDOX responsive multi-functional microgels for the anticancer drug delivery

A sodium alginate (Alg) based REDOX (reduction and oxidation)-responsive and fluorescent active microgel was prepared via water in oil (w/o) mini-emulsion polymerization technique. Here, we initially synthesized sodium alginate-based disulfide cross linked microgels and after that those microgels were tagged with rhodamine amine derivative (RhB-NH2) by ionic interaction to get the pH-responsive fluorescent property. Functionalized microgels were characterized using 1H NMR, FTIR, DLS, HRTEM, FESEM, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses. Presence of the REDOX-responsive disulfide-containing crosslinkers in the microgels enhances the release of doxorubicin (DOX), an anti-cancer drug in the reducing environment of the cancer-cells (simulated). Existence of the rhodamine-amine derivative in the microgels triggers the pH-dependent fluorescence property by showing fluorescence emission at 560-580 nm at pH 5.5 (cancer cell pH). The cytotoxicity of the biopolymer based microgel was assessed over both cancerous HeLa (IC50 100 µg/mL) and non-cancerous MDCK (IC50 200 µg/mL) cells by MTT assay which showed the synthesized microgel is non-toxic whereas DOX-loaded microgels showed significant toxicity. FACS and cell uptake (in vitro) analyses were conducted to understand the cell apoptosis cycle and behavior of the cancer cells in presence of the DOX-loaded microgels. This pH-responsive fluorescent active alginate-based biomaterial could be a promising material for the anti-cancer drug delivery and other medical fields.

pH-sensitive semi-interpenetrating network of microcrystalline cellulose and methacrylic acid hydrogel for the oral delivery of insulin

Insulin is commonly administered to diabetic patients subcutaneously and has shown poor patient compliance. Due to this, research has been carried out extensively to find molecules that could deliver insulin orally. In this context, a new type of pH-responsive hydrogel, composed of microcrystalline cellulose and methacrylic acid-based hydrogels, has been developed and studied for the oral delivery of insulin. These hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization using potassium persulphate as initiator and N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide as a cross-linker. These pH-sensitive hydrogels showed swelling in distilled water as high as 5800 %. The hydrogels were investigated for swelling in saline and glucose solutions, and pH sensitivity was confirmed by swelling in solutions of different pH. The morphological shape was established by SEM, and the structure was analyzed by FTIR. Thermal degradation was investigated by TGA. In vitro release studies have confirmed pH sensitivity, showing lower insulin release at pH 1.2 than at pH 6.8. The encapsulation efficiency was determined to be 56.00 ± 0.04 %. It was further validated by in-vivo investigations for which insulin was loaded into hydrogels and administered orally to healthy and diabetic Wistar rats at 40 IU/kg, showing maximum hypoglycemic effect at 6 h, which was sustained for 24 h. In the stomach's acidic environment, the gels remained unaffected due to the formation of intermolecular polymer complexes. Insulin remained in the gel and was protected from proteolytic degradation. Thus, pH-responsive methacrylic acid-based hydrogels are promising for biomedical applications, especially oral drug delivery.

Fluorination effects on non-covalent binding forces: A rotational study on the 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid-water complex

This study explores the effects of the -CF3 group on non-covalent interactions through a comprehensive rotational investigation of the 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid-water complex. Employing Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented by quantum chemical calculations, two isomers, i.e., s-cis and s-trans structures, have been observed in the pulsed jet. Based on relative intensity measurements, the s-cis to the s-trans population ratio was experimentally estimated to be ∼ 1:1.2. Subsequently, a comparison of the non-covalent interactions was carried out between the three similar complexes, acrylic acid-water, methacrylic acid-water, and 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid-water, offering quantitative insights into fluorination affecting the strength of the formed hydrogen bonds important, e.g., in molecular recognition.

A Halogen-Bonded Fluorescent Molecular Photoswitch: Transition from 3D Cubic Lattice to 1D Helical Superstructure for Polarization Inversion of Circularly Polarized Luminescence

The fabrication of materials that can switch between circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals is both essential and challenging. Here, two new halogen-bonded fluorescent molecular photoswitches, namely, HB-switch 1 and HB-switch 2, containing α-cyano-substituted diarylethene compounds with different end groups were developed. Upon exposure to specific UV or visible light wavelengths, they exhibited controllable and reversible Z/E photoisomerization. When these switches were integrated into blue-phase liquid crystals (BPLCs), the temperature range of BP significantly expanded. Notably, the BP system incorporating HB-switch 1 exclusively achieved reversible polarization inversion of CPL signals under irradiation with specific UV/Visible light and during cooling/heating. The photo/thermal dual-response behavior of the CPL signals can be attributed to the phase transition from a high-symmetry 3D BP Icubic lattice to a low-symmetry 1D helical superstructure induced by the Z/E photoisomerization of HB-switch 1 and temperature changes. This study underscores the significance of employing halogen-bond assembly strategies to design materials with switchable CPL signals, opening new possibilities for CPL-active systems.

Inverse Vulcanization of Activated Norbornenyl Esters-A Versatile Platform for Functional Sulfur Polymers

Elemental sulfur has shown to be a promising alternative feedstock for development of novel polymeric materials with high sulfur content. However, the utilization of inverse vulcanized polymers is restricted by the limitation of functional comonomers suitable for an inverse vulcanization. Control over properties and structure of inverse vulcanized polymers still poses a challenge to current research due to the dynamic nature of sulfur-sulfur bonds and high temperature of inverse vulcanization reactions. In here, we report for the first time the inverse vulcanization of norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NB-PFPE), allowing for post-modification of inverse vulcanized polymers via amidation of reactive PFP esters to yield high sulfur content polymers under mild conditions. Amidation of the precursor material with three functional primary amines (α-amino-ω-methoxy polyethylene glycol, aminopropyl trimethoxy silane, allylamine) was investigated. The resulting materials were applicable as sulfur containing poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles in aqueous environment. Cross-linked mercury adsorbents, sulfur surface coatings, and high-sulfur content networks with predictable thermal properties were achievable using aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and allylamine for post-polymerization modification, respectively. With the broad range of different amines available and applicable for post-polymerization modification, the versatility of poly(sulfur-random-NB-PFPE) as a platform precursor polymer for novel specialized sulfur containing materials was showcased.

Efficient Dienyl End-Capping of Ruthenium Catalyzed Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization with Allyl Compounds through Base-Promoted Metallacyclobutane Decomposition

Herein we demonstrate an effective and facile end-capping technique for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using readily available allyl compounds as a new type of terminating agents. This new type of end-capping reactions, which are based on the base-promoted decomposition of ruthenocyclobutane intermediates, introduce diene moiety onto the chain end of ROMP polymers while simultaneously deactivating the ruthenium complex. These termination reactions are highly efficient, typically completing within 1 minute at 0 °C with >95 % end-capping fidelity.

Divergent Synthesis of Enantioenriched Silicon-Stereogenic Benzyl-, Vinyl- and Borylsilanes via Asymmetric Aryl to Alkyl 1,5-Palladium Migration

Functionalization of Si-bound methyl group provides an efficient access to diverse organosilanes. However, the asymmetric construction of silicon-stereogenic architectures by functionalization of Si-bound methyl group has not yet been described despite recent significant progress in producing chiral silicon. Herein, we disclosed the enantioselective silylmethyl functionalization involving the aryl to alkyl 1,5-palladium migration to access diverse naphthalenes possessing an enantioenriched stereogenic silicon center, which are inaccessible before. It is worthy to note that the realization of asymmetric induction at the step of metal migration itself remains challenging. Our study constitutes the first enantioselective aryl to alkyl 1,5-palladium migration reaction. The key to the success is the discovery and fine-tuning of the different substituents of α,α,α,α-tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol (TADDOL)-based phosphoramidites, which ensure the enantioselectivity and desired reactivity.

Deciphering and Integrating Functionalized Side Chains for High Ion-Conductive Elastic Ternary Copolymer Solid-State Electrolytes for Safe Lithium Metal Batteries

A critical challenge in solid polymer lithium batteries is developing a polymer matrix that can harmonize ionic transportation, electrochemical stability, and mechanical durability. We introduce a novel polymer matrix design by deciphering the structure-function relationships of polymer side chains. Leveraging the molecular orbital-polarity-spatial freedom design strategy, a high ion-conductive hyperelastic ternary copolymer electrolyte (CPE) is synthesized, incorporating three functionalized side chains of poly-2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl acrylate (PTFEA), poly(vinylene carbonate) (PVC), and polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA). It is revealed that fluorine-rich side chain (PTFEA) contributes to improved stability and interfacial compatibility; the highly polar side chain (PVC) facilitates the efficient dissociation and migration of ions; the flexible side chain (PEGMEA) with high spatial freedom promotes segmental motion and interchain ion exchanges. The resulting CPE demonstrates an ionic conductivity of 2.19×10-3 S cm-1 (30 °C), oxidation resistance voltage of 4.97 V, excellent elasticity (2700 %), and non-flammability. The outer elastic CPE and the inner organic-inorganic hybrid SEI buffer intense volume fluctuation and enable uniform Li+ deposition. As a result, symmetric Li cells realize a high CCD of 2.55 mA cm-2 and the CPE-based Li||NCM811 full cell exhibits a high-capacity retention (~90 %, 0.5 C) after 200 cycles.

Optical Monitoring of Supramolecular Interactions in Polymers

Many stimuli-responsive materials harness the reversible association of supramolecular binding motifs to enable advanced functionalities such as self-healing, switchable adhesion, or mechanical adaptation. Despite extensive research into the structure-property relationships of these materials, direct correlations between molecular-level changes in supramolecular binding and macroscopic material behaviors have mostly remained elusive. Here, we show that this challenge can be overcome with supramolecular binding motifs featuring integrated binding indicators. We demonstrate this using a novel motif that combines a hydrogen-bonding ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) with two strategically placed pyrene fluorophores. Dimerization of this motif promotes pyrene excimer formation, facilitating the straightforward optical quantification of supramolecular assembly under various conditions. We exploit the new motif as a supramolecular cross-linker in poly(methyl acrylate)s to probe the extent of (dis)assembly as a function of cross-linker content, processing history, and applied stimuli. We demonstrate that the stimuli-induced dissociation of hydrogen-bonding linkages strongly depends on the initial cross-link density, which also dictates whether the force-induced dissociation in polymer films correlates with the applied stress or strain. Thus, beyond introducing a robust tool for the in situ study of dynamic (dis)assembly mechanisms in supramolecular systems, our findings provide new insights into the mechanoresponsive behavior of such materials.

Influence of theoretical and semi-empirical peak models on the efficiency calculation in chiral chromatography

Height equivalent to theoretical plate (H) equations, such as the van Deemter or Knox-Saleem equations, and other efficiency vs. linear velocity equations (u), provide kinetic insights into chromatographic separations phenomena and column performance. In enantioselective separations, the peak shape of the two enantiomers can differ significantly and are often asymmetric. The peak efficiency calculations heavily impact these efficiency-flow profiles, leading to erroneous estimations of eddy diffusion, longitudinal diffusion, and mass transfer terms. In this work, new asymmetric peak functions are employed for modeling enantiomer peaks based on the Haarhoff-Van der Linde function, its generalized variant (GHVL), once Generalized Asymmetric Gaussian (AGN), and Twice Generalized Gaussian (TGN). The new models (AGN, TGN, and GHVL) incorporate higher statistical moments besides the zeroth, first, and second moments to account for two-sided asymmetry (fronting or tailing). The fit results are compared with the traditional efficiency calculation methods endorsed by official pharmacopeia and numerical estimation of moments from the raw data. Enantiomeric separations of ibuprofen and dl-homophenylalanine were chosen as probe molecules. The results demonstrate that non-linear least squares fitted functions provide better estimations of peak efficiency data even in the presence of high noise. In particular, the generalized models consistently offered the best quality fits for various peak shapes in chiral separations. Conversely, the half-height Gaussian method greatly overpredicted skewed peak efficiencies. This investigation reveals that the commonly held assumptions of peak shape and numerical integration of raw data are highly insufficient for chiral chromatography. The impact of asymmetry on plate height should not be overlooked when accurate data from efficiency-flow rate curves is derived. We advocate for the broader adoption of these new generalized peak (AGN, TGN, GHVL) models because they provide robustness at various SNRs that account for right or left asymmetry while accurately representing peak geometry.

Nucleic acid-responsive smart systems for controlled cargo delivery

Stimulus-responsive delivery systems allow controlled, highly regulated, and efficient delivery of various cargos while minimizing side effects. Owing to the unique properties of nucleic acids, including the ability to adopt complex structures by base pairing, their easy synthesis, high specificity, shape memory, and configurability, they have been employed in autonomous molecular motors, logic circuits, reconfigurable nanoplatforms, and catalytic amplifiers. Moreover, the development of nucleic acid (NA)-responsive intelligent delivery vehicles is a rapidly growing field. These vehicles have attracted much attention in recent years due to their programmable, controllable, and reversible properties. In this work, we review several types of NA-responsive controlled delivery vehicles based on locks and keys, including DNA/RNA-responsive, aptamer-responsive, and CRISPR-responsive, and summarize their advantages and limitations.

In situ comparison of osteogenic effects of polymer-based scaffolds with different degradability by integrated scaffold model

Polymer-based scaffolds with different degradability have been investigated to screen the matrix whose degradation rate is more closely matched with the bone regeneration rate. However, these comparisons are inclined to be compromised by the animal individual differences. In this study, we constructed an integrated scaffold model comprising four parts with different degradability and bioactivity to achieve an in situ comparison of bone regeneration ability of different scaffolds. Slow-degradable polycaprolactone (PCL), fast-degradable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and silica-coated PCL and PLGA scaffolds were assembled into a round sheet to form a hydroxyapatite (HA)-free integrated scaffold. HA-doped PCL, PLGA, and silica-coated PCL and PLGA scaffolds were assembled to create an HA-incorporated integrated scaffold. The in vivo experimental results demonstrated that the local acid microenvironment caused by the rapid degradation of PLGA interfered with the osteogenic process promoted by PCL-based scaffolds in defect areas implanted with HA-free integrated scaffolds. Since the incorporation of HA alleviated the acidic microenvironment to some extent, each scaffold in HA-incorporated scaffolds exhibited its expected bone regeneration capacity. Consequently, it is feasible to construct an integrated structure for comparing the osteogenic effects of various scaffolds in situ, when there is no mutual interference between the materials. The strategy presented in this study inspired the structure design of biomaterials to enable in situ comparison of bone regeneration capacity of scaffolds.

Bio-based production of cis,cis-muconic acid as platform for a sustainable polymers production

Production of the high industrial value cis,cis-muconic acid (ccMA) from renewable biomasses is of main interest especially when biological (green) processes are used. We recently generated a E. coli strain expressing five recombinant enzymes to convert vanillin (VA, from lignin) into ccMA. Here, we optimized a growing cell approach in bioreactor for the ccMA production. The medium composition, fermentation conditions, and VA addition were tuned: pulse-feeding VA at 1 mmol/h allowed to reach 5.2 g/L of ccMA in 48 h (0.86 g ccMA/g VA), with a productivity 4-fold higher compared to the resting cells approach, thus resulting in significantly lower E-factor and Process Mass Intensity green metric parameters. The recovered ccMA has been used as building block to produce a fully bioderived polymer with rubber-like properties. The sustainable optimized bioprocess can be considered an integrated approach to develop a platform for bio-based polymers production from renewable feedstocks.
