Abstract
In this article, we review studies that have used dietary indexes to assess different aspects of diet in relation to health outcomes and sociodemographic factors in childhood populations of developed countries. Eighty-four papers published from 1980 to mid-2010 including 90 unique dietary indexes were reviewed. Seventy-two indexes were developed (or have been adapted) specifically for childhood populations; 38 of these were used to assess diet-disease associations, mostly of diet and obesity. In the majority of these studies, small inverse associations between dietary indexes and obesity indexes were shown. Children who were younger, female, and from high-income families had better dietary quality scores. Forty-nine indexes (of 90) were compared with other aspects of dietary intakes or behaviors, with correlations ranging from very low to modest (∼r = 0.05-0.50). Only 2 validation studies compared an index with nutritional biomarkers, and correlations were quite weak for most plasma nutrients (P < 0.10). Overall, a large number of indexes have been created and used, but the majority of studies are descriptive. Fewer analytic studies on index-health associations have been performed, and most analyses insufficiently adjusted for confounders. Thus, prospective and intervention research in diverse populations is needed to further test these tools. In conclusion, indexes are potentially useful methods for dietary assessment, because they offer valuable information on overall dietary patterns in children. However, understanding the advantages and limitations when applying them in research and public health settings is important, and more research is needed to further develop their utility.

Abstract
In recent years, oxidative stress has been postulated to be an important factor in the pathogenesis and development of lifestyle-related diseases. In this study, we investigated the association between the derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), as an index of products of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and biological antioxidant potential (BAP), as an index of antioxidant potential. We also investigated the associations between d-ROMs or BAP and the risk factors for lifestyle-related diseases or metabolic syndrome-associated factors to evaluate their usefulness in preventive medicine. There were 442 subjects who underwent health checkup examination in our facilities. In addition to standard medical checkup items, we analyzed d-ROMs, BAP, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level and visceral fat area (VFA) visualized on a computed tomography scan. The mean d-ROM value in females was significantly higher than that in males. There was a positive correlation between the d-ROM and VFA levels. On correlation analysis, there was a negative correlation between the d-ROM and creatinine levels. As factors that influence d-ROMs, the level of VFA was selected, suggesting the significance of oxidative stress measurement with d-ROMs. In addition, there was a positive correlation between d-ROMs and BAP values. Further research is required to resolve whether increased production of ROS or the antioxidant potential that can compensate for such an increase of ROS is more important in vivo.

Abstract
Sesame oil could be considered as a potent antioxidant and dietary supplement. It possesses antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-cardiac toxicity. In the view of available findings, the current study focused on determining the protective effects of sesame oil on 4-Nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO) -induced oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in rats. Seven groups of Wistar albino rats each with 6 either sex were used. Groups were given vehicle control and sesame oil alone orally and 4-NQO (30 mg/kg) by intraperitoneal injection. Following the four dose levels (1, 2, 4, and 8 ml/kg orally), sesame oil plus 4-NQO were also tested. After 24 hours of 4-NQO injection, blood samples were drawn by venipuncture. DNA damage (8-hydroxy-2-deoxy guanosine; 8-OHdG) and LPO were estimated. LPO from the 4-NQO-treated group was 2.5-fold higher than that of the control LPO. Pretreatment with sesame oil reduced this by 16-61%. 8-OHdG DNA damage from 4-NQO was found to be 3-fold higher than that of controls. Pretreatment with sesame oil effectively protected against DNA damage in a dose-dependent fashion. This study indicates that the antioxidant, sesame oil, effectively protected DNA damage and LPO induced by 4-NQO.

Abstract
The levels of 18 different minerals in ten locally produced mono-floral honeys (clover, honeydew, kāmahi, mānuka, nodding thistle, rātā, rewarewa, tāwari, thyme and viper's bugloss honey) were determined, as well as moisture content, pH, conductivity and colour. The most abundant minerals were potassium, phosphorus and calcium, ranging between 34.8-3640, 29.5-255 and 7.21-94.3mg/kg, respectively. Potassium made up 73% of the total mineral content. There was a large range of mean total mineral contents, with honeydew honey having the highest level (4060mg/kg) and viper's bugloss honey the lowest (126mg/kg). Honeydew had more than twice the mean total mineral contents than kāmahi, the next highest. The heavy metal contents (Cd, Pb and Zn) of the mono-floral honey types investigated were very low. A strong positive relationship between mean conductivity and total mineral content (r(2)=0.973), and pH and total mineral content (r(2)=0.776) was observed in this study.

Abstract
Five typical Cuban monofloral honeys were analyzed for their in vitro total antioxidant capacity (TAC), phenolic compounds, and ascorbic acid content. Identification and quantification of phenolics were carried out by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS. Fourteen phenolic compounds could be identified (eight phenolic acids and six flavonoids), including three glycosylated derivatives. Similar contents of total phenolics were found in the different honeys, although they differed in their qualitative profiles. A significant (positive) correlation was found between the results of TAC obtained by parallel FIA-ABTS system and ORAC assay (r=0.9565, p<0.001). Similar correlations were also established between total phenolics and TAC, determined by either the ORAC (r=0.9633; p<or=0.001) or the TEAC assay (r=0.9582; p<or=0.001). Honeys were fractionated by solid-phase extraction into four fractions, and the relative contribution of each fraction to TAC was calculated. Phenolic compounds were significant contributors to the antioxidant capacity of the honeys, but they were not uniquely responsible for it. The antioxidant activity appeared to be a result of the combined activity of a range of compounds including phenolics and other minor components. Ascorbic acid was not detected.

Abstract
Many papers in the literature have described complex effects of flavonoids and other polyphenols on cells in culture. In this paper we show that hydroxytyrosol, delphinidin chloride and rosmarinic acid are unstable in three commonly-used cell culture media (Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM), RPMI 1640 (RPMI) and Minimal Essential Medium Eagle (MEM)) and undergo rapid oxidation to generate H2O2. This may have confounded some previous studies on the cellular effects of these compounds. By contrast, apigenin, curcumin, hesperetin, naringenin, resveratrol and tyrosol did not generate significant H2O2 levels in these media. Nevertheless, curcumin and, to a lesser extent, resveratrol (but not tyrosol) were also unstable in DMEM, so the absence of detectable H2O2 production by a compound in cell culture media should not be equated to stability of that compound. Compound instability and generation of H2O2 must be taken into account in interpreting effects of phenolic compounds on cells in culture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of cocoa products on lipid changes is controversial. OBJECTIVES We aimed to identify and quantify the effect of cocoa on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol. DESIGN A comprehensive literature search was conducted for relevant trials of cocoa on lipid profile. Weighted mean differences were calculated for net changes in lipid concentrations by using fixed-effects or random-effects models. Previously defined subgroup analyses were performed to identify the source of heterogeneity. RESULTS Eight trials (involving 215 participants) were included and evaluated. Because there was only one relatively longer-term study, we focused on the short-term data to evaluate the effects of cocoa on plasma lipid. Cocoa consumption significantly lowered LDL cholesterol by 5.87 mg/dL (95% CI: -11.13, -0.61; P < 0.05) and marginally lowered total cholesterol by 5.82 mg/dL (95% CI: -12.39, 0.76; P = 0.08). However, no significant change was seen in LDL cholesterol in high-quality studies (3 studies included; -4.98 mg/dL; 95% CI: -13.18, 3.21; P = 0.23). Subgroup analyses suggested a cholesterol-lowering effect only in those subjects who consumed a low dose of cocoa and with cardiovascular disease risks. There was no evidence of a dose-effect relation, of any effect in healthy subjects, or of any change in HDL cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Short-term cocoa consumption significantly reduced blood cholesterol, but the changes were dependent on the dose of cocoa consumption and the healthy status of participants. There was no dose response and no effect in healthy participants. Future high-quality studies are needed to determine the efficiency of moderate cocoa consumption on lipid profile in long-term intervention and in subjects with other cardiometabolic risk factors.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Cancer-related muscle loss, or cachexia, is the cause of death for approximately 2 million people worldwide and severely reduces quality of life. The degree of cachexia is inversely correlated with survival time; however, the exact mechanisms behind cancer-induced muscle wasting remain under investigation. RECENT FINDINGS Cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha trigger degradatory pathways through nuclear factor-kappaB signaling that activate the ubiquitin-proteasome system and muscle proteolysis. Androgen treatment has been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines and even stimulate anti-inflammatory cytokine production. Amino acid supplementation has been shown to induce muscle protein synthesis in ovarian cancer patients. SUMMARY Targeted anabolic therapies aimed at preventing or reversing cancer cachexia might involve the combined use of androgens and amino acids working concurrently to enhance muscle protein synthesis and reduce muscle protein breakdown. Additional focused clinical studies are needed to identify muscle-specific targets or biomarkers for defined therapeutic approaches to slow or prevent cancer cachexia. In this review, we summarize the pathogenesis of cancer-related muscle wasting and discuss potential interventions at reversing or preventing cancer-related muscle loss.

Abstract
Several monofloral Cuban honeys were analyzed to determine their total phenolic, flavonoid, ascorbic acid, amino acid, protein and carotenoid contents as well as their radical-scavenging activity and antimicrobial capacities. The total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid contents varied considerably, and the highest values were obtained for Linen vine (Govania polygama (Jack) Urb) honey, which is classified as an amber honey. The highest amino acid content was found in Morning glory (Ipomoea triloba L.) while Liven vine had the highest protein content. Similarly Linen vine honey had the highest antioxidant activity while the lowest was found in Christmas vine (Turbina corymbosa (L.) Raf). Ascorbic acid was absent. Hydroxyl radical formation was studied by EPR and spin trapping, and it was found in all honeys tested. The antimicrobial activity was screened using two Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. S. aureus was the most sensitive microorganism while Pseudomonas aeruginosa presented higher minimum active dilution values. Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli were both moderately sensitive to honey antimicrobial activity. A correlation between radical-scavenging activity and total phenolic content was found. Correlation existed also between color vs phenolics content, vs flavonoid content or between phenolic vs flavonoid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Disease-related malnutrition is a common comorbidity at hospital admission. The purpose of the present report was to describe the data on nutritional care routines collected during the Project: Iatrogenic MAlnutrition in Italy (PIMAI) study, as these may be helpful to avoid iatrogenic malnutrition and improve nutritional policies. SUBJECTS/METHODS Standards of nutritional care were assessed on the basis of (1) adherence to study protocol (completeness of data collected); (2) attitude in assessing the nutritional status; (3) prescription of nutritional therapy (within 3 days) at least in patients presenting with overt malnutrition (body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m(2) or significant weight loss (>or=10% in 3 months and/or >or=5% in the last month)), regardless of its adequacy, and adherence to current guidelines and (4) attitude in monitoring nutritional status during the stay (number of weight measurements performed compared with those expected). RESULTS In total, 1583 subjects were assessed. A minimum data set for performing the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 tool was available in 1284 patients (81.1%), but nutritional screening was possible in every patient by alternative analytical criteria related to food intake, anthropometry and biochemistry. However, several missing values were recorded, particularly in biochemical parameters due to lack of prescription by admission wards. According to ward practices, only 38.2% of the patients had the BMI calculated. A nutritional support was prescribed only to 26/191 patients (13.6%) presenting with overt malnutrition. Finally, we recorded that only 21.6% of the patients (207/960 were randomly selected) had their weight monitored on a scheduled basis. This reality was worse in surgical rather than medical departments (17 vs 26%; P<0.001). CONCLUSION Present results confirm that in Italy, nutritional care routines are still poor and need improvements.

Abstract
Many healthy foods are derived from wheat germ. The molecular composition of these products, however, greatly differs as shown by normal-phase HPLC-mass spectrometry analysis; thus, experimental data obtained by one of them is not necessarily true for the other. Avemar is a nontoxic wheat germ extract registered as a special nutriment for cancer patients in Hungary. It shows potent anticancer activity on cell lines by deeply interfering with glucose metabolism and affecting expressions of several kinases. In in vivo experimental models, Avemar is also effective by enhancing the activity of the immune system such as stimulating NK cell activity (by reducing MHC I molecule expression), enhancing TNF secretion of the macrophages, increasing ICAM 1 molecule expression on the vascular endothelial cells. All of these lead to apoptosis of tumor cells. The wide range of biological activity of Avemar probably cannot be explained by only one active ingredient. Since there are numerous experimental data and the clinical benefit repeatedly confirmed Avemar can be one of the most potent and best researched food supplements available for cancer patients.
