Abstract
An intramolecular dearomatization of indole derivatives based on visible-light-promoted [2+2] cycloaddition was achieved via energy transfer mechanism. The highly strained cyclobutane-fused angular tetracyclic spiroindolines, which were typically unattainable under thermal conditions, could be directly accessed in high yields (up to 99%) with excellent diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) under mild conditions. The method was also compatible with diverse functional groups and amenable to flexible transformations. In addition, DFT calculations provided guidance on the rational design of substrates and deep understanding of the reaction pathways. This process constituted a rare example of indole functionalization by exploiting visible-light-induced reactivity at the excited states.

Abstract
A novel palladium-catalyzed [4+1] spiroannulation was developed by using a C(sp3 )-H activation/naphthol dearomatization approach. This bimolecular domino reaction of two aryl halides was realized through a sequence of cyclometallation-facilitated C(sp3 )-H activation, biaryl cross-coupling, and naphthol dearomatization, thus rendering the rapid assembly of a new class of spirocyclic molecules in good yields with broad functional-group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that C-H cleavage is likely involved in the rate-determining step, and a five-membered palladacycle was identified as the key intermediate for the intermolecular coupling.

Abstract
The rerouting of the nitrilium ion formed in the Schmidt reaction of ketones and TMSN3 to encompass C-C bond formation with an electron-rich aromatic group is reported. Thus, when the reaction is carried out in HFIP using AlCl3 or AlBr3 as the promoter, imines, iminium ions, or enamide derivatives are obtained through one-pot procedures. The scope and possible mechanisms of these new transformations are considered.

Abstract
The N-iodosuccinimide-mediated spirocyclization of tryptamine-derived isocyanides to generate spiroindolenines is reported. The products contain both an imine and an imidoyl iodide as flexible handles for follow-up chemistry. Nucleophilic addition typically occurs chemoselectively on the imine moiety with complete diastereoselectivity, providing opportunities for the construction of complex molecular frameworks. The synthetic potential of the method was showcased in the formal total synthesis of (±)-aspidofractinine.

synthesized for the first time. The carbon skeleton of the natural
product was formed rapidly by a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling
reaction and a gallium-catalyzed three-component [4 + 3] cycloaddition
reaction. An alternative biosynthesis of exotine B is proposed based
on the total synthesis. Improved syntheses of coumarin natural products
gleinadiene and coumurrayin are also reported.

Abstract
Unfunctionalized indoles can be directly converted into 3,3'-spirocyclic indolenines and indolines upon reaction with electrophilic dihalides in the presence of t-BuOK/BEt3. This double C-C bond forming reaction, which simultaneously generates a quaternary spirocyclic center, typically proceeds in high yield and has good functional group tolerance. In contrast to existing dearomatizing spirocyclization approaches, there is no need to prepare a prefunctionalized aromatic precursor, enabling faster access to valuable spirocyclic products from simple, commercially available aromatics in one step.

Abstract
A combined Lewis acid system comprising of two or more Lewis acids occasionally exhibits augmented catalytic activity in organic transformations which are otherwise unrealizable by either of the components exclusively. On the other hand, the efficient construction of multiple new C-C bonds and polycyclic structures in minimal steps remains a subject of great interest in both academia and industry. Herein we report an efficient method to assemble aryldihydronaphthalene derivatives via a cascade reaction of diarylalkynes with acrylates under the catalysis of a combined Lewis acid derived from In(III) salt and TMSBr.

Abstract
Reported is a highly chemoselective intermolecular annulation of indole-based biaryls with bromoalkyl alkynes by using palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) cooperative catalysis. This reaction is realized through a sequence of Catellani-type C-H alkylation, alkyne insertion, and indole dearomatization, by forming two C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ) and one C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ) bonds in a single chemical operation, thus providing a diverse range of pentacyclic molecules, containing a spiroindolenine fragment, in good yields with excellent functional-group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that C-H bond cleavage is likely involved in the rate-determining step, and the indole dearomatization might take place through an olefin coordination/insertion and β-hydride elimination Heck-type pathway.

Abstract
An intermolecular Pd-catalyzed allylic dearomatization reaction of polycyclic indoles with substituted allylic carbonates was realized in the presence of a newly synthesized chiral phosphoramidite ligand. Various polycyclic indoline and indolenine derivatives were successfully synthesized in excellent yields (up to 99%) with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee). The obtained products could undergo versatile transformations, increasing the application potential of the method in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The Catellani reaction enables an ortho-C-H activation based on oxidative addition of Pd(0) and an intermediary carbopalladation of norbornene. Among its variants, the recently developed C2-selective alkylation of indoles is particular as it employs Pd(ii) as the source of palladium. This review describes the mechanistic background of this transformation. Applications in total synthesis and in the synthesis of biologically relevant molecules are illustrated and further developments of the method are discussed.

Abstract
A C-N bond forming dearomatization protocol with broad scope is outlined. Specifically, bifunctional amino reagents are used for sequential nucleophilic and electrophilic C-N bond formations, with the latter effecting the key dearomatization step. Using this approach, γ-arylated alcohols are converted to a wide range of differentially protected spirocyclic pyrrolidines in just two or three steps.
