Abstract
Levulinic acid-derived 6-diazoheptane-2,5-dione (9) serves as a common precursor in a formal synthesis of frontalin 19, and in syntheses of cis-nemorensic acid 1, 4-hydroxy-cis-nemorensic acid 2, 3-hydroxy-cis-nemorensic acid 3, and nemorensic acid 4. The key step in these syntheses is the Rh(2)(OAc)(4)-catalyzed tandem carbonyl ylide formation-intermolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of diazodione 9 with formaldehyde, alkynes or allene, which occur with high regioselectivity. Subsequent oxidative cleavage of the ring originally derived from the cyclic carbonyl ylide intermediate provides a straightforward access to polysubstituted tetrahydrofurans, and in particular an efficient entry to the nemorensic acids. Enantioselective cycloadditions with diazodione 9, using chiral rhodium catalysts, gave cycloadducts in up to 51% ee.

Abstract
All 16 stereoisomers of the sex pheromone of pine sawfly (3,7,11-trimethylundecanol propanoate ester) have been synthesized on a 10- to 20-mg scale by a split-parallel fluorous mixture-synthesis approach. Spectral data obtained for all 32 compounds (16 alcohols and the corresponding propionates) matched well with published data, thereby validating the fluorous-tag encoding of diastereoisomers. This fluorous-tag encoding method is recommended for the efficient synthesis of multiple stereoisomers for spectroscopic studies, biological tests, or other structure-function relationships.

Abstract
The total synthesis of octalactins A and B has been achieved in 15 steps (longest linear sequence) and 10% overall yield from commercially available materials. Key steps include the Paterson-Aldol reaction for the rapid assembly of the carbonate 46, methylenation of 46 and subsequent Claisen rearrangement of the corresponding alkenyl-substituted cyclic ketene acetal to provide the core unsaturated medium-ring lactone 47, and the use of enzyme-mediated acetate deprotection in the presence of a medium-ring lactone.

Abstract
The ionic Diels-Alder reaction, whereby an alpha,beta-unsaturated acetal in combination with a Lewis or Bronsted acid forms an equilibrium concentration of an activated dienophile, has been developed to provide an enantioselective synthesis of cis-decalins. Cyclohex-2-enone type chiral acetals of (2R,3R)-butane-2,3-diol have been screened against Lewis and Brønsted acids with a variety of dienes and are efficient for the synthesis of a limited subset of cis-decalin structures. Diastereoselectivities of 73% and 82% have been found for the asymmetric ionic Diels-Alder reaction between the chiral acetal derivatives of cyclohex-2-enone (6) and 2-methylcyclohex-2-enone (18) with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (7). Terminal substituents on the diene partner in general render the system unreactive. However a synthetically useful cis-decalin 31, derived from the reaction of 2-methylcyclohex-2-enone and Z-3-t-butyldimethyl-silyloxypenta-1,3-diene has been prepared in enantiomerically pure form in 74% isolated yield using this asymmetric ionic Diels-Alder protocol.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Iron(III) chloride-catalyzed effective allylation reactions of acetals with allyltrimethylsilane proceeded smoothly in high to excellent yields. In addition, this method could be applied to the one-pot synthesis of homoallyl benzyl ethers by a combination of dibenzyl acetalization of aldehydes and consecutive allylation of dibenzyl acetals.

Abstract
With use of diol, alkoxysilane, and a catalytic amount of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf), carbonyl compounds are converted to acetals in good yields under mild conditions. This procedure, which was carried out without synthesizing the silylated diols, is a more convenient adaptation of Noyori's method. This acetalization applies to not only simple but also conjugated carbonyl compounds. Moreover, various TMS compounds, including solid supported compounds, are effective for this method instead of alkoxylsilane.

Abstract
An expedient synthesis of the polymer-supported aldehyde 3, as a Garner aldehyde equivalent, is described. Oxazolidine 3 may be obtained through preformation of aldehyde linker 4 in solution and loaded onto amine-terminating resin under peptide-coupling conditions, or alternatively via oxidation of polymer-bound alcohol 14. The integrity of the serine-derived stereocenter is maintained through all steps of the synthesis.

Abstract
Acetals are obtained in good yields by treatment of aldehydes and ketones with trialkyl orthoformate and the corresponding alcohol in the presence of 0.1 mol % Bi(OTf)3.4H2O. A simple procedure for the formation of acetals of diaryl ketones has also been developed. The conversion of carbonyl compounds to the corresponding 1,3-dioxolane using ethylene glycol is also catalyzed by Bi(OTf)3.4H2O (1 mol %). Two methods, both of which avoid the use of benzene, have been developed.

Abstract
Enynes are easily accessible building blocks as a result of the rich chemistry of alkynes and thus represent attractive substrates for ring formation. A ruthenium catalyst for cycloisomerization effects such reaction of 1,6- and 1,7-enynes typically at room temperature in acetone or DMF under neutral conditions. The reaction is effective for forming five- and six-membered rings of widely divergent structure. The alkyne may bear both election-donating and election-withdrawing substituents. The alkene may be di- or trisubstituted. Introduction of a quaternary center at the propargylic position of an ynoate, however, completely changes the nature of the reaction. In the case of a 1,6-enynoate, a seven-membered ring forms in excellent yield under equally mild conditions. Evidence is presented to indicate a complete change in mechanism. In the former case, the reaction involves the intermediacy of a ruthenacyclopentene. In the latter case, a C-H insertion to form a pi-allylruthenium intermediate is proposed and supported by deuterium-labeling studies. A rationale is presented for the structural dependence of the mechanism.

Abstract
A strategy for stereocontrolled syntheses of furanoside type of natural products is developed for a glycosyl aryl ether. This strategy resolves the issue of low diastereoselectivity typical of normal glycosidation methods for furanosides. All the stereochemistry ultimately derives from a desymmetrization of a 2,5-diacyloxy-2,5-dihydrofuran using Pd catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation which sets both the absolute stereochemistry and 1,4-relative stereochemistry. Diastereo-controlled elaboration of the 3,4-double bond then completes the synthesis. A new conjunctive reagent, 1-nitro-1-phenylsulfonyl-ethane, is developed to serve as an acyl anion equivalent. The utility of a phenol as a nucleophile in the Pd catalyzed glycosylation is demonstrated. From this strategy emerged a short, practical synthesis of C-2-epi-hygromycin A.

Abstract
Ring-opening reactions of semicyclic N,O-acetals possessing an exocyclic nitrogen atom with silicon-based nucleophiles (silyl enol ethers, ketene silyl acetals, allylic silanes, and trimethylsilyl cyanide) were systematically studied for the first time. It was found that the reactions were effectively catalyzed by a Lewis acid, trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf), to afford 1,4- and 1,5-amino alcohols in high yields. In reactions of 3-oxygen functionalized semicyclic N,O-acetals, high 1,2-syn-diastereoselectivity was obtained. By 1H NMR experiment, the formation of the O-trimethylsilylated ring-opened product was observed as the initial product. Furthermore, the epimerization between the diastereomers of a 3-benzyloxy semicyclic N,O-acetal suggested the transient formation of an acyclic iminium ion species as a reactive intermediate. It was also found that 3-acetoxy and 3-benzyloxy N,O-acetals showed a tendency for the larger nucleophile to provide higher syn-selectivity, while 3-tert-butyldiphenylsilyloxy N,O-acetals showed the opposite tendency. These stereochemical outcomes can be rationalized by assuming four transition state models for the acyclic iminium ion intermediate. The synthetic utility of the reaction has been demonstrated in the diastereoselective synthesis of piperidine alkaloids, (+)-isofebrifugine and (+/-)-sedacryptine.

Abstract
Both enantiomers of imperanene, a platelet aggregation inhibitor, have been synthesized in 82-90% ee. The key step of establishing the chiral center was achieved through stereoselective alkylation with benzyl chloromethyl ether using Enders' RAMP/SAMP chiral auxiliary method. The natural product was determined to be the (S)-enantiomer through comparison of optical rotation data. Reaction: see text.

Abstract
A synthesis of the bicyclo[2.1.1]hexane substructure of solanoeclepin A (1), the most active natural hatching agent of potato cyst nematodes, was approached via an intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition. Aldehyde 12 containing the dioxenone chromophore served as a useful starting material, allowing the synthesis of a variety of photocycloaddition substrates via Grignard addition or via a Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction. Photolysis of the unsubstituted alkene 14 led to the expected crossed cycloadduct bicyclo[2.1.1]hexane 15 according to the so-called rule of five. However, several functionalized alkenes 18, 20, and 31 exhibited a complete reversal of cycloaddition regioselectivity, providing straight cycloadducts bicyclo[2.2.0]hexanes 21-26 and 4, respectively. Their structures were proved by a combination of extensive NMR measurements, X-ray analyses, and subsequent retro-aldol reactions. The latter de Mayo process allowed the formation of spiro-[3.5]nonane 35 and spiro[3.4]octane 36 as well as the cyclobutanes 37 and 38. Finally, the cyclization of the more rigid lactone precursor 28 occurred in high yield in the desired fashion with complete regio- and stereoselectivity to give 3 containing the core bicyclo[2.1.1]hexane skeleton of the natural product.
