Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Interception of Transient Allyl Radicals with Low-Valent Allylpalladium Chemistry: Tandem Pd(0/II/I)-Pd(0/II/I/II) Cycles in Photoredox/Pd Dual-Catalytic Enantioselective C(sp3)-C(sp3) Homocoupling

We present comprehensive computational and experimental studies on the mechanism of an asymmetric photoredox/Pd dual-catalytic reductive C(sp3)-C(sp3) homocoupling of allylic electrophiles. In stark contrast to the canonical assumption that photoredox promotes bond formation via facile reductive elimination from high-valent metal-organic species, our computational analysis revealed an intriguing low-valent allylpalladium pathway that features tandem operation of Pd(0/II/I)-Pd(0/II/I/II) cycles. Specifically, we propose that (i) the photoredox/Pd system enables the in situ generation of allyl radicals from low-valent Pd(I)-allyl species, and (ii) effective interception of the fleeting allyl radical by the chiral Pd(I)-allyl species results in the formation of an enantioenriched product. Notably, the cooperation of the two pathways highlights the bifunctional role of Pd(I)-allyl species in the generation and interception of transient allyl radicals. Moreover, the mechanism implies divergent substrate-activation modes in this homocoupling reaction, suggesting a theoretical possibility for cross-coupling. Combined, the current study offers a novel mechanistic hypothesis for photoredox/Pd dual catalysis and highlights the use of low-valent allylpalladium as a means to efficiently intercept radicals for selective asymmetric bond constructions.

Light Activation and Photophysics of a Structurally Constrained Nickel(II)-Bipyridine Aryl Halide Complex

Transition-metal photoredox catalysis has transformed organic synthesis by harnessing light to construct complex molecules. Nickel(II)-bipyridine (bpy) aryl halide complexes are a significant class of cross-coupling catalysts that can be activated via direct light excitation. This study investigates the effects of molecular structure on the photophysics of these catalysts by considering an underexplored, structurally constrained Ni(II)-bpy aryl halide complex in which the aryl and bpy ligands are covalently tethered alongside traditional unconstrained complexes. Intriguingly, the tethered complex is photochemically stable but features a reversible Ni(II)-C(aryl) ⇄ [Ni(I)···C(aryl)•] equilibrium upon direct photoexcitation. When an electrophile is introduced during photoirradiation, we demonstrate a preference for photodissociation over recombination, rendering the parent Ni(II) complex a stable source of a reactive Ni(I) intermediate. Here, we characterize the reversible photochemical behavior of the tethered complex by kinetic analyses, quantum chemical calculations, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Comparison to the previously characterized Ni(II)-bpy aryl halide complex indicates that the structural constraints considered here dramatically influence the excited state relaxation pathway and provide insight into the characteristics of excited-state Ni(II)-C bond homolysis and aryl radical reassociation dynamics. This study enriches the understanding of molecular structure effects in photoredox catalysis and offers new possibilities for designing customized photoactive catalysts for precise organic synthesis.

Organic Photoredox Reactions in Two-Molecule Photoredox System

Using our recent relevant results, this account shows the featured reactivities of two-molecule photoredox systems compared to one-molecule photoredox systems. The low efficiency of electron transfer processes, such as photoinduced and back-electron transfer, in the two-molecule photoredox system, furnishes unique products through different pathways. The facile replacement of photoredox catalysts with appropriate oxidation/reduction potentials in this system provides valuable insights into photoredox reactions.

Photoredox Catalyzed Radical Fluoroalkylation with Non-Classical Fluorinated Reagents

The emergence of photocatalysis has greatly advanced radical fluoroalkylation reactions. Central to this advancement is the introduction and refinement of radical reagents, which play a pivotal role in driving these reactions forward. Intriguingly, some of these reagents, previously not recognized for their radical properties, have emerged as key players in this area. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of four representative reagents pioneered by our laboratory, which have subsequently garnered extensive application in broader research contexts, including difluorocarbene precursors bromodifluoromethylphosphonium bromide, electrophilic sulfonylation reagent triflic anhydride, and nucleophilic trifluoromethylation reagent methyl fluorosulfonyldifluoroacetate (Chen's reagent). The integration of phosphonium reagents, triflic anhydride, and methyl fluorosulfonyldifluoroacetate into photocatalysis has enabled some unexpected reactivities and now notably expanded the capabilities in radical difluoromethylation, trifluoromethylation, and difluoroalkylation. Our discussion highlights how these atypical reagents have enriched the toolkit available for radical fluoroalkylations, offering insights that could inspire future research and application in this area.

A Radical Approach for Asymmetric α-C-H Addition of N-Sulfonyl Benzylamines to Aldehydes

Efficient synthesis of enantioenriched amines is of great importance due to their significant synthetic and biological applications. Photoredox-mediated asymmetric α-amino C(sp3)-H functionalization offers an atom-economical and sustainable approach to access chiral amines. However, the development of analogous reactions is in its early stages, generally affording chiral amines with a single stereocenter. Herein, we present a novel synergistic triple-catalysis approach for the asymmetric α-C-H addition of readily available N-sulfonyl amines to aldehydes under mild conditions. This method allows for the efficient synthesis of a diverse array of valuable β-amino alcohols bearing vicinal stereocenters. Unlike previous reports, our protocol employs a radical approach using earth-abundant Cr catalysis. Quinuclidine plays a dual role by facilitating highly selective hydrogen-atom transfer to generate α-amino radicals and promoting the dissociation of the Cr-O bond, which is crucial for the overall catalytic cycle as evidenced by control, NMR, and DFT experiments. Preliminary mechanistic studies, including radical trapping, nonlinear effect, Stern-Volmer plot, kinetic isotope effect, and Hammett plot, offer valuable insights into the reaction pathway.

Solid-state mechanochemistry for the rapid and efficient synthesis of tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes

Tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes have received widespread attention as attractive prospective materials for e.g., organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), photoredox catalysts, and bioimaging probes. However, their preparation usually requires prolonged reaction times, significant amounts of high-boiling solvents, multistep synthesis, and inert-gas-line techniques. Unfortunately, these requirements represent major drawbacks from both a production-cost and an environmental perspective. Herein, we show that a two-step mechanochemical protocol using ball milling enables the rapid and efficient synthesis of various tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes from relatively cheap iridium(iii) chloride hydrate without the use of significant amounts of organic solvent in air. Notably, a direct one-pot procedure is also demonstrated. The present solid-state approach can be expected to inspire the development of cost-effective and timely production methods for these valuable iridium-based complexes, as well as the discovery of new phosphorescent materials, sensors, and catalysts.

Unveiling Mechanistic Insights and Photocatalytic Advancements in Intramolecular Photo-(3 + 2)-Cycloaddition: A Comparative Assessment of Two Paradigmatic Single-Electron-Transfer Models

The synthesis of 1-aminonorbornane (1-aminoNB), a potential aniline bioisostere, through photochemistry or photoredox catalysis signifies a remarkable breakthrough with implications in organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, and sustainable chemistry. However, an understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in these reactions remains limited and ambiguous. Herein, we employ high-precision CASPT2//CASSCF calculations to elucidate the intricate mechanisms regulating the intramolecular photo-(3 + 2)-cycloaddition reactions for the synthesis of 1-aminoNB in the presence or absence of the Ir-complex-based photocatalyst. Our investigations delve into radical cascades, stereoselectivity, particularly single-electron-transfer (SET) events, etc. Furthermore, we innovatively introduce and compare two SET models integrating Marcus electron-transfer theory and transition-state theory. These models combined with kinetic data contribute to recognizing the critical control factors in diverse photocatalysis, thereby guiding the design and manipulation of photoredox catalysis as well as the improvement and modification of photocatalysts.

Photoredox/Nickel Dual Catalysis-Enabled Aryl Formylation with 2,2-Dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylethan-1-amine as CO Source

Herein, a dual photoredox/nickel catalyzed formylation of aryl bromide with commercially available 2,2-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylethan-1-amine as an effective CO source has been successfully achieved, delivering a series of aromatic aldehydes in moderate to good yields. Compared with the traditional reductive carbonylation process, this newly designed synthetic protocol provides a straightforward toolbox to access aromatic aldehydes, obviating the use of carbon monoxide and stoichiometric reductants. Finally, the utility of this direct formylation reaction was demonstrated in the pharmaceutical analogue synthesis.

Symmetric dicyanobenzothiadiazole (DCBT) dyes with a 1.5 eV excited state reduction potential range

Strong molecular photooxidants are important in many disciplines including organic synthesis and renewable energy. In these fields, strongly oxidizing chromophores are employed to drive various transformations from challenging bond formations to energy storage systems. A range of photooxidant strengths are needed to drive these processes. A series of 8 symmetrically bisarylated 5,6-dicyano[2,1,3]benzothiadiazole (DCBT) dyes were studied for their tunability toward breadth of light absorption and photooxidant strength. The dye oxidation strength and light absorption tunability is the result of appending various aryl substituents on the periphery of the DCBT core which shows remarkable tunability of the final chromophore. The dyes are studied via steady-state absorption and emission, time-correlated single photon counting, computational analysis, and cyclic voltammetry. In changing the peripheral aryl substituents via electronics, sterics, and π-conjugation length, a series of dyes are arrived at with a dramatic 1.5 eV range in oxidizing strength and >200 nm (0.95 eV) absorption maxima tunability. Furthermore, two dyes in the series exhibit strong oxidizing strength while still approaching red light absorbance (>650 nm onset) which provides unique opportunities for the use of lower energy light to affect chemical transformations. Ultimately, this series provides options for photooxidations that allow for energetic tuning and selectivity for a given chemical transformation.

A Dual Cobalt and Photoredox Catalysis for Hydrohalogenation of Alkenes

We demonstrate hydrohalogenation of aliphatic alkenes with collidine·HX salts through dual photoredox/cobalt catalysis. The dual catalysis enables conversion of a proton and a halide anion from collidine·HX salt to a nucleophilic hydrogen radical equivalent and an electrophilic halogen radical equivalent and delivery of them to an alkene moiety. This protocol allows for introduction of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom to alkene, producing highly functionalized alkyl halides.

Controlling the Photophysical Properties of a Series of Isostructural d6 Complexes Based on Cr0, MnI, and FeII

Development of first-row transition metal complexes with similar luminescence and photoredox properties as widely used RuII polypyridines is attractive because metals from the first transition series are comparatively abundant and inexpensive. The weaker ligand field experienced by the valence d-electrons of first-row transition metals challenges the installation of the same types of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states as in precious metal complexes, due to rapid population of energetically lower-lying metal-centered (MC) states. In a family of isostructural tris(diisocyanide) complexes of the 3d6 metals Cr0, MnI, and FeII, the increasing effective nuclear charge and ligand field strength allow us to control the energetic order between the 3MLCT and 3MC states, whereas pyrene decoration of the isocyanide ligand framework provides control over intraligand (ILPyr) states. The chromium(0) complex shows red 3MLCT phosphorescence because all other excited states are higher in energy. In the manganese(I) complex, a microsecond-lived dark 3ILPyr state, reminiscent of the types of electronic states encountered in many polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds, is the lowest and becomes photoactive. In the iron(II) complex, the lowest MLCT state has shifted to so much higher energy that 1ILPyr fluorescence occurs, in parallel to other excited-state deactivation pathways. Our combined synthetic-spectroscopic-theoretical study provides unprecedented insights into how effective nuclear charge, ligand field strength, and ligand π-conjugation affect the energetic order between MLCT and ligand-based excited states, and under what circumstances these individual states become luminescent and exploitable in photochemistry. Such insights are the key to further developments of luminescent and photoredox-active first-row transition metal complexes.

Bottom-Up Construction of Ni(II)-Incorporated Covalent Organic Framework for Metallaphotoredox Catalysis

The construction of an all-in-one catalyst, in which the photosensitizer and the transition metal site are close to each other, is important for improving the efficiency of metallaphotoredox catalysis. However, the development of convenient synthetic strategies for the precise construction of an all-in-one catalyst remains a challenging task due to the requirement of precise installation of the catalytic sites. Herein, we have successfully established a facile bottom-up strategy for the direct synthesis of Ni(II)-incorporated covalent organic framework (COF), named LZU-713@Ni, as a versatile all-in-one metallaphotoredox catalyst. LZU-713@Ni showed excellent activity and recyclability in the photoredox/nickel-catalyzed C-O, C-S, and C-P cross-coupling reactions. Notably, this catalyst displayed a better catalytic activity than its homogeneous analogues, physically mixed dual catalyst system, and, especially, LZU-713/Ni which was prepared through post-synthetic modification. The improved catalytic efficiency of LZU-713@Ni should be attributed to the implementation of bottom-up strategy, which incorporated the fixed, ordered, and abundant catalytic sites into its framework. This work sheds new light on the exploration of concise and effective strategies for the construction of multifunctional COF-based photocatalysts.

Merging Excited-State Copper Catalysis and Triplet Nitro(hetero)arenes for Direct Synthesis of 2-Aminophenol Derivatives

Nitro(hetero)arene derivatives are essential commodity chemicals used in various products, such as drugs, polymers, and agrochemicals. In this study, we leverage the excited-state reactivities of copper catalysts and nitro(hetero)arenes, and the Umpolung reactivity of acyl radicals to convert readily available nitro(hetero)arenes directly to valuable 2-aminophenol derivatives, which are important scaffolds in many top-selling pharmaceuticals. This reaction is applicable to a variety of nitro(hetero)arenes, acyl chlorides, and late-stage modifications of complex molecules, making it a useful tool for the discovery of new functional molecules. Mechanistic studies, including radical trapping experiments, Stern Volmer quenching studies, light ON/OFF experiments, and 18O-labeling studies, suggest a reaction mechanism involving photoexcitation of a copper complex, diradical couplings, and an in-cage contact ion pair (CIP) migration. Our findings offer a streamlined protocol for synthesizing essential pharmacophores from nitro(hetero)arenes while simultaneously advancing knowledge in excited-state and radical chemistry and stimulating new reaction design and development.

Selective α-oxidation of amides via visible-light-driven iron catalysis

Hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) as one of the highly reactive species can react unselectively with a wide range of chemicals. The ˙OH radicals are typically generated under harsh conditions. Herein, we report hydroxyl radical-induced selective N-α C(sp3)-H bond oxidation of amides under greener and mild conditions via an Fe(NO3)3·9H2O catalyst inner sphere pathway upon irradiation with a 30 W blue LED light strip (λ = 455 nm) using NaBrO3 as the oxidant. This protocol exhibited high chemoselectivity and excellent functional group tolerance. A preliminary mechanism investigation demonstrated that the iron catalyst afforded hydroxyl radicals via the visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH) of iron complexes followed by a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process to realize this transformation.

Dual Nickel- and Photoredox-Catalyzed Asymmetric Reductive Cross-Coupling To Access Chiral Secondary Benzylic Alcohols

Transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric cross-coupling represents a powerful strategy for C-C bond formation and the synthesis of enantiomerically pure molecules. Here, we report a dual nickel/photoredox-catalyzed enantioselective reductive cross-coupling of aryl halides with α-bromobenzoates, readily generated from aliphatic aldehydes, to provide diverse chiral secondary benzylic alcohols that are important motifs in bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals. This dual catalytic system features mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope, excellent enantiocontrol, and avoidance of stoichiometric metal reductants, presenting great potential for late-stage functionalization of complex molecules.

Computational Methods Enable the Prediction of Improved Catalysts for Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Electrophile Coupling

Cross-electrophile coupling has emerged as an attractive and efficient method for the synthesis of C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds. These reactions are most often catalyzed by nickel complexes of nitrogenous ligands, especially 2,2'-bipyridines. Precise prediction, selection, and design of optimal ligands remains challenging, despite significant increases in reaction scope and mechanistic understanding. Molecular parameterization and statistical modeling provide a path to the development of improved bipyridine ligands that will enhance the selectivity of existing reactions and broaden the scope of electrophiles that can be coupled. Herein, we describe the generation of a computational ligand library, correlation of observed reaction outcomes with features of the ligands, and the in silico design of improved bipyridine ligands for Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling. The new nitrogen-substituted ligands display a 5-fold increase in selectivity for product formation versus homodimerization when compared to the current state of the art. This increase in selectivity and yield was general for several cross-electrophile couplings, including the challenging coupling of an aryl chloride with an N-alkylpyridinium salt.

Photochemical Deoxygenative Hydroalkylation of Unactivated Alkenes Promoted by a Nucleophilic Organocatalyst

The direct utilization of simple and abundant feedstocks in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions to embellish sp3 -enriched chemical space is highly desirable. Herein, we report a novel photochemical deoxygenative hydroalkylation of unactivated alkenes with readily available carboxylic acid derivatives. The reaction displays broad functional group tolerance, accommodating carboxylic acid-, alcohol-, ester-, ketone-, amide-, silane-, and boronic ester groups, as well as nitrile-containing substrates. The reaction is operationally simple, mild, and water-tolerant, and can be carried out on multigram-scale, which highlights the utility of the method to prepare value-added compounds in a practical and scalable manner. The synthetic application of the developed method is further exemplified through the synthesis of suberanilic acid, a precursor of vorinostat, a drug used for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. A novel mechanistic approach was identified using thiol as a nucleophilic catalyst, which forms a key intermediate for this transformation. Furthermore, electrochemical studies, quantum yield, and mechanistic experiments were conducted to support a proposed catalytic cycle for the transformation.

Decarboxylative Radical Sulfilimination via Photoredox, Copper, and Brønsted Base Catalysis

Sulfilimines, the aza-variants of sulfoxides, are key structural motifs in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals; and sulfilimine synthesis is therefore important in organic chemistry. However, methods for radical sulfilimination remain elusive, and as a result, the structural diversity of currently available sulfilimines is limited. Herein, we report the first protocol for decarboxylative radical sulfilimination reactions between sulfenamides and N-hydroxyphthalimide esters of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl carboxylic acids, which were achieved via a combination of photoredox, copper, and Brønsted base catalysis. This novel protocol provided a wide variety of sulfilimines, in addition to serving as an efficient route for the synthesis of S-alkyl/S-aryl homocysteine sulfilimines and S-(4-methylphenyl) homocysteine sulfoximine. Moreover, it could be used for late-stage introduction of a sulfilimine group into structurally complex molecules, thereby avoiding the need to preserve labile organosulfur moieties through multistep synthetic sequences. A mechanism involving photocatalytic substrate transformation and copper-mediated C(sp3 )-S bond formation is proposed.

Broad Survey of Selectivity in the Heterogeneous Hydrogenation of Heterocycles

A broad survey of heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysts has been conducted for the reduction of heterocycles commonly found in pharmaceuticals. The comparative reactivity of these substrates is reported as a function of catalyst, temperature, and hydrogen pressure. This analysis provided several catalysts with complementary reactivity between substrates. We then explored a series of bisheterocyclic substrates that provided an intramolecular competition of heterocycle hydrogenation reactivity. In several cases, complete selectivity could be achieved for reduction of one heterocycle and isolated yields are reported. A general trend in reactivity is inferred in which quinoline is the most reactive, followed by pyrazine, then pyrrole and with pyridine being the least reactive.

Divergent Reactivity of 1,2,3-Benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones: Photocatalytic Synthesis of 3-Substituted Isoindolinones Achieved through a Nitrogen-Mediated Hydrogen Atom Shift

A regioselective visible-light-mediated denitrogenative alkene insertion of 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones was developed to access 3-substituted isoindolinones, an important structural motif present in many biologically active molecules and natural products. Notably, divergent reactivity was achieved by switching from reported nickel catalysis (where C3-substituted 3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-ones form) to photocatalysis, where photocatalytic denitrogenation and a subsequent nitrogen-mediated hydrogen atom shift lead to exclusive 3-substituted isoindolinone formation. The developed photocatalytic reaction is compatible with activated terminal alkenes and cyclic α,β-unsaturated esters and ketones, with wide functional group tolerance for N-substitution of the 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones. The utility of this procedure is highlighted by a gram-scale synthesis and postsynthetic amidation. To understand the origin of this unique product selectivity, experimental and computational mechanistic studies were performed.

Automated self-optimization, intensification, and scale-up of photocatalysis in flow

The optimization, intensification, and scale-up of photochemical processes constitute a particular challenge in a manufacturing environment geared primarily toward thermal chemistry. In this work, we present a versatile flow-based robotic platform to address these challenges through the integration of readily available hardware and custom software. Our open-source platform combines a liquid handler, syringe pumps, a tunable continuous-flow photoreactor, inexpensive Internet of Things devices, and an in-line benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer to enable automated, data-rich optimization with a closed-loop Bayesian optimization strategy. A user-friendly graphical interface allows chemists without programming or machine learning expertise to easily monitor, analyze, and improve photocatalytic reactions with respect to both continuous and discrete variables. The system's effectiveness was demonstrated by increasing overall reaction yields and improving space-time yields compared with those of previously reported processes.

Merging Photocatalytic Doubly-Decarboxylative Csp 2 -Csp 2 Cross-Coupling for Stereo-Selective (E)-α,β-Unsaturated Ketones Synthesis

A photocatalytic domain of doubly decarboxylative Csp 2 -Csp 2 cross coupling reaction is disclosed. Merging iridium and palladium photocatalysis manifested carbon-carbon bonds in a tandem dual-radical pathway. Present catalytic platform efficiently cross-coupled α, β-unsaturated acids and α-keto acids to afford a variety of α, β-unsaturated ketones with excellent (E)-selectivity and functional group tolerance. Mechanistically, photocatalyst implicated through reductive quenching cycle whereas cross coupling proceeded over one electron oxidative pallado-cycle.

In Operando Visualization of Elementary Turnovers in Photocatalytic Organic Synthesis

We report the in operando visualization of the photocatalytic turnovers on single eosin Y (EY) through a redox-induced photoblinking phenomenon. The photocatalytic cyclization of thiobenzamide (TB) catalyzed by EY was investigated. The analysis of the intensity-versus-time trajectories of single EYs revealed the kinetics and dynamics of the elementary photocatalytic turnovers and the heterogeneity of the activity of individual EYs. The quenching turnover time showed a fast population and a slow population, which could be attributed to the singlet and triplet states of photoexcited EY. The slow quenching turnovers were more dominant at higher TB concentrations. The activity heterogeneity of EYs was studied over a series of reactant concentrations. Excess quenching reagent was found to decrease the percentage of active EYs. The method can be broadly applied to studying the elementary processes of photocatalytic organic reactions in operando.

Transformations of carbohydrate derivatives enabled by photocatalysis and visible light photochemistry

This review article highlights the diverse ways in which recent developments in the areas of photocatalysis and visible light photochemistry are impacting synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. The major topics covered are photocatalytic glycosylations, generation of radicals at the anomeric position, transformations involving radical formation at non-anomeric positions, additions to glycals, processes initiated by photocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer from sugars, and functional group interconversions at OH and SH groups. Factors influencing stereo- and site-selectivity in these processes, along with mechanistic aspects, are discussed.

Molecular Co-Catalyst Confined within a Metallacage for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The construction of structurally well-defined supramolecular hosts to accommodate catalytically active species within a cavity is a promising way to address catalyst deactivation. The resulting supramolecular catalysts can significantly improve the utilization of catalytic sites, thereby achieving a highly efficient chemical conversion. In this study, the Co-metalated phthalocyanine (Pc-Co) was successfully confined within a tetragonal prismatic metallacage, leading to the formation of a distinctive type of supramolecular photocatalyst (Pc-Co@Cage). The host-guest architecture of Pc-Co@Cage was unambiguously elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), NMR, and ESI-TOF-MS, revealing that the single cobalt active site can be thoroughly isolated within the space-restricted microenvironment. In addition, we found that Pc-Co@Cage can serve as a homogeneous supramolecular photocatalyst that displays high CO2 to CO conversion in aqueous media under visible light irradiation. This supramolecular photocatalyst exhibits an obvious improvement in activity (TONCO = 4175) and selectivity (SelCO = 92%) relative to the nonconfined Pc-Co catalyst (TONCO = 500, SelCO = 54%). The present strategy provided a rare example for the construction of a highly active, selective, and stable photocatalyst for CO2 reduction through a cavity-confined molecular catalyst within a discrete metallacage.

Radical Reactions in Organic Synthesis: Exploring in-, on-, and with-Water Methods

Radical reactions in water or aqueous media are important for organic synthesis, realizing high-yielding processes under non-toxic and environmentally friendly conditions. This overview includes (i) a general introduction to organic chemistry in water and aqueous media, (ii) synthetic approaches in, on, and with water as well as in heterogeneous phases, (iii) reactions of carbon-centered radicals with water (or deuterium oxide) activated through coordination with various Lewis acids, (iv) photocatalysis in water and aqueous media, and (v) synthetic applications bioinspired by naturally occurring processes. A wide range of chemical processes and synthetic strategies under different experimental conditions have been reviewed that lead to important functional group translocation and transformation reactions, leading to the preparation of complex molecules. These results reveal how water as a solvent/medium/reagent in radical chemistry has matured over the last two decades, with further discoveries anticipated in the near future.

Electrophotocatalytic hydrogenation of imines and reductive functionalization of aryl halides

The open-shell catalytically active species, like radical cations or radical anions, generated by one-electron transfer of precatalysts are widely used in energy-consuming redox reactions, but their excited-state lifetimes are usually short. Here, a closed-shell thioxanthone-hydrogen anion species (3), which can be photochemically converted to a potent and long-lived reductant, is generated under electrochemical conditions, enabling the electrophotocatalytic hydrogenation. Notably, TfOH can regulate the redox potential of the active species in this system. In the presence of TfOH, precatalyst (1) reduction can occur at low potential, so that competitive H2 evolution can be inhibited, thus effectively promoting the hydrogenation of imines. In the absence of TfOH, the reducing ability of the system can reach a potency even comparable to that of Na0 or Li0, thereby allowing the hydrogenation, borylation, stannylation and (hetero)arylation of aryl halides to construct C-H, C-B, C-Sn, and C-C bonds.

Discovery of Organic Optoelectronic Materials Powered by Oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H Coupling

Efficient and streamlined synthetic methods that facilitate the rapid build-up of structurally diverse π-conjugated systems are of paramount importance in the quest for organic optoelectronic materials. Among these methods, transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions between two (hetero)arenes have emerged as a concise and effective approach for generating a wide array of bi(hetero)aryl and fused heteroaryl structures. This innovative approach bypasses challenges associated with substrate pre-activation processes, thereby allowing for the creation of frameworks that were previously beyond reach using conventional Ar-X/Ar-M coupling reactions. These inherent advantages have ushered in new design patterns for organic optoelectronic molecules that deviate from traditional methods. This ground-breaking approach enables the transcendence of the limitations of repetitive material structures, ultimately leading to the discovery of novel high-performance materials. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of recent advances in the development of organic optoelectronic materials through the utilization of transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions. We introduce several notable synthetic strategies in this domain, covering both directed and non-directed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling strategies, dual chelation-assisted strategy and directed ortho-C-H arylation/cyclization strategy. Additionally, we shed light on the role of oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions in the advancement of high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. Finally, we discuss the current limitations of existing protocols and offer insights into the future prospects for this field.

Photocatalyzed Enantioselective Functionalization of C(sp3)-H Bonds

Owing to its diverse activation processes including single-electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT), visible-light photocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable and efficient platform for organic synthesis. These processes provide a powerful avenue for the direct functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds under mild conditions. Over the past decade, there have been remarkable advances in the enantioselective functionalization of the C(sp3)-H bond via photocatalysis combined with conventional asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we summarize the advances in asymmetric C(sp3)-H functionalization involving visible-light photocatalysis and discuss two main pathways in this emerging field: (a) SET-driven carbocation intermediates are followed by stereospecific nucleophile attacks; and (b) photodriven alkyl radical intermediates are further enantioselectively captured by (i) chiral π-SOMOphile reagents, (ii) stereoselective transition-metal complexes, and (iii) another distinct stereoscopic radical species. We aim to summarize key advances in reaction design, catalyst development, and mechanistic understanding, to provide new insights into this rapidly evolving area of research.

Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis of Atropisomers Bearing Multiple Chiral Elements: An Emerging Field

With the rapid development of asymmetric catalysis, the demand for the enantioselective synthesis of complex and diverse molecules with different chiral elements is increasing. Owing to the unique features of atropisomerism, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of atropisomers has attracted a considerable interest from the chemical science community. In particular, introducing additional chiral elements, such as carbon centered chirality, heteroatomic chirality, planar chirality, and helical chirality, into atropisomers provides an opportunity to incorporate new properties into axially chiral compounds, thus expanding the potential applications of atropisomers. Thus, it is important to perform catalytic asymmetric transformations to synthesize atropisomers bearing multiple chiral elements. In spite of challenges in such transformations, in recent years, chemists have devised powerful strategies under asymmetric organocatalysis or metal catalysis, synthesizing a wide range of enantioenriched atropisomers bearing multiple chiral elements. Therefore, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of atropisomers bearing multiple chiral elements has become an emerging field. This review summarizes the rapid progress in this field and indicates challenges, thereby promoting this field to a new horizon.

Boosting Energy-Transfer Processes via Dispersion Interactions

The generation of open-shell intermediates under mild conditions has opened broad synthetic opportunities during this century. However, these reactive species often require a case specific and tailored tuning of experimental parameters in order to efficiently convert substrates into products. We report a general approach that can overcome these ubiquitous limitations for several visible-light promoted energy-transfer processes. The use of either naphthalene (5-20 equiv.) or simple binaphthyl derivatives (10-30 mol %) greatly increases their efficiency, giving rise to a new strategy for catalysis. The trend is consistent among different media, photocatalysts, light sources and substrates, allowing one to improve existing methods, to more easily optimize conditions for new ones, and, moreover, to disclose otherwise inaccessible reaction pathways.

Amidative β-Scission of Alcohols Enabled by Dual Catalysis of Photoredox Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer and Inner-Sphere Ni-Nitrenoid Transfer

The photoredox/Ni dual catalysis is an appealing strategy to enable unconventional C-heteroatom bond formation. While significant advances have been achieved using this system, intermolecular C(sp3)-N bond formation has been relatively underdeveloped due to the difficulty in C(sp3)-N reductive elimination. Herein, we present a new mechanistic approach that utilizes dioxazolones as the Ni(II)-nitrenoid precursor to capture carbon-centered radicals by merging proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) with nickel catalysis, thus forming synthetically versatile N-alkyl amides using alcohols. Based on mechanistic investigations, the involvement of (κ2-N,O)Ni(II)-nitrenoid species was proposed to capture photoredox PCET-induced alkyl radicals, thereby playing a pivotal role to enable the C(sp3)-N bond formation.

Photoredox Catalytic Phosphine-Mediated Deoxygenative Hydroacylation of Azobenzenes with Carboxylic Acids

The convenient and precise preparation of N,N'-diarylhydrazides, especially from readily available raw materials, remains highly challenging. Here, a photoredox catalytic phosphine-mediated deoxygenative hydroacylation of azobenzenes with abundant and readily available carboxylic acids has been developed. With Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbbpy)PF6 as the photocatalyst, the reactions proceeded smoothly in the presence of PPh3 under visible light irradiation, delivering various N,N'-diarylhydrazides in up to 92% yields. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction proceeds via photoredox catalysis and phosphoranyl-radical-mediated C-O bond cleavage of carboxylic acids.

Hydroxytrifluoroethylation and Trifluoroacetylation Reactions via SET Processes

Hydroxytrifluoroethyl and trifluoroacetyl groups are of utmost importance in biologically active compounds, but methods to tether these motifs to organic architectures have been limited. Typically, the preparation of these compounds relied on the use of strong bases or multistep routes. The renaissance of radical chemistry in photocatalytic, transition metal mediated, and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes have allowed the installation of these medicinally relevant fluorinated motifs. This review provides an overview of the methods available for the direct synthesis of hydroxytrifluoroethyl- and trifluoroacetyl-derived compounds governed by single-electron transfer processes.

Nickel-Catalyzed Asymmetric Propargyl-Aryl Cross-Electrophile Coupling

Performing asymmetric cross-coupling reactions between propargylic electrophiles and aryl nucleophiles is a well-established method to build enantioenriched benzylic alkynes. Here, a catalytic enantioselective propargyl-aryl cross-coupling between two electrophiles was achieved for the first time in a stereoconvergent manner. Propargylic chlorides were treated with aryl iodides as well as heteroaryl iodides in the presence of a chiral nickel complex, and manganese metal was used as a stoichiometric reductant, allowing for the construction of a propargyl C-aryl bond under mild conditions. An alternative dual nickel/photoredox catalytic protocol was also developed for this cross-electrophile coupling in the absence of a metal reductant. The potential utility of this conversion is demonstrated in the facile construction of stereoenriched bioactive molecule derivatives and medicinal compounds based on the diversity of acetylenic chemistry. Detailed experimental studies have revealed the key mechanistic features of this transformation.

Accelerated Electrophotocatalytic C(sp3 )-H Heteroarylation Enabled by an Efficient Continuous-Flow Reactor

Electrophotocatalytic transformations are garnering attention in organic synthesis, particularly for accessing reactive intermediates under mild conditions. Moving these methodologies to continuous-flow systems, or flow ElectroPhotoCatalysis (f-EPC), showcases potential for scalable processes due to enhanced irradiation, increased electrode surface, and improved mixing of the reaction mixture. Traditional methods sequentially link photochemical and electrochemical reactions, using flow reactors connected in series, yet struggle to accommodate reactive transient species. In this study, we introduce a new flow reactor concept for electrophotocatalysis (EPC) that simultaneously utilizes photons and electrons. The reactor is designed with a transparent electrode and employs cost-effective materials. We used this technology to develop an efficient process for electrophotocatalytic heteroarylation of C(sp3 )-H bonds. Importantly, the same setup can also facilitate purely electrochemical and photochemical transformations. This reactor represents a significant advancement in electrophotocatalysis, providing a framework for its application in flow for complex synthetic transformations.

Nickel-Catalyzed Radical Mechanisms: Informing Cross-Coupling for Synthesizing Non-Canonical Biomolecules

Nickel excels at facilitating selective radical chemistry, playing a pivotal role in metalloenzyme catalysis and modern cross-coupling reactions. Radicals, being nonpolar and neutral, exhibit orthogonal reactivity to nucleophilic and basic functional groups commonly present in biomolecules. Harnessing this compatibility, we delve into the application of nickel-catalyzed radical pathways in the synthesis of noncanonical peptides and carbohydrates, critical for chemical biology studies and drug discovery.We previously characterized a sequential reduction mechanism that accounts for chemoselectivity in cross-electrophile coupling reactions. This catalytic cycle begins with nickel(I)-mediated radical generation from alkyl halides, followed by carbon radical capture by nickel(II) complexes, and concludes with reductive elimination. These steps resonate with mechanistic proposals in nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling, photoredox, and electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, we present our insights into each step involving radicals, including initiation, propagation, termination, and the nuances of kinetics, origins of selectivity, and ligand effects.Radical generation from C(sp3) electrophiles via one-electron oxidative addition with low-valent nickel radical intermediates provides the basis for stereoconvergent and cross-electrophile couplings. Our electroanalytical studies elucidate a concerted halogen atom abstraction mechanism, where electron transfer is coupled with halide dissociation. Using this pathway, we have developed a nickel-catalyzed stereoselective radical addition to dehydroalanine, facilitating the synthesis of noncanonical peptides. In this application, chiral ligands modulate the stereochemical outcome through the asymmetric protonation of a nickel-enolate intermediate.The capture of the alkyl radical by nickel(II) expands the scope of cross-coupling, promotes reductive elimination through the formation of high-valent nickel(III) species, and governs chemo- and stereoselectivity. We discovered that nickel(II)-aryl efficiently traps radicals with a barrier ranging from 7 to 9 kcal/mol, followed by fast reductive elimination. In contrast, nickel(II)-alkyl captures radicals to form a nickel(III) species, which was characterized by EPR spectroscopy. However, the subsequent slow reductive elimination resulted in minimal product formation. The observed high diastereoselectivity of radical capture inspired investigations into C-aryl and C-acyl glycosylation reactions. We developed a redox auxiliary that readily couples with natural carbohydrates and produces glycosyl radicals upon photoredox activation. Nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of the glycosyl radical with bromoarenes and carboxylic acids leads to diverse non-natural glycosides that can facilitate drug discovery.Stoichiometric studies on well-defined d8-nickel complexes have showcased means to promote reductive elimination, including ligand association, oxidation, and oxidative addition.In the final section, we address the influence of auxiliary ligands on the electronic structure and redox activity of organonickel intermediates. Synthesis of a series of low-valent nickel radical complexes and characterization of their electronic structures led us to a postulate that ligand redox activity correlates with coordination geometry. Our data reveal that a change in ligand redox activity can shift the redox potentials of reaction intermediates, potentially altering the mechanism of catalytic reactions. Moreover, coordinating additives and solvents may stabilize nickel radicals during catalysis by adjusting ligand redox activity, which is consistent with known catalytic conditions.

Pro-aromatic Dihydroquinazolinones - From Multigram Synthesis to Reagents for Gram-scale Metallaphotoredox Reactions

Dihydroquinazolinone (DHQZ) has recently been harnessed as a ketone-derived pro-aromatic reagent extensively employed in (metalla)photoredox reactions as versatile group transfer agents. In this work, we outline a column chromatography-free protocol for the multigram-scale synthesis of pro-aromatic DHQZs as well as its use in a gram-scale nickel/photoredox dual-catalyzed cross-coupling in single-batch, photoflow, and simultaneous multiple smaller batches. While the single-batch approach leveraged moderate yields, a simple plug-flow photoreactor also exhibited amenable productivity (up to 45 % yield) despite the use of a heterogeneous base. Meanwhile, performing the metallaphotoredox-catalyzed reaction in multiple smaller batches in an improvised photoreactor facilitated high yields of up to 59 % and good reproducibility, implying a convenient alternative in the absence of photoflow setups.

Visible light-induced palladium-carbon bond weakening in catalytically relevant T-shaped complexes

Triggering one-electron redox processes during palladium catalysis holds the potential to unlock new reaction mechanisms and synthetic methods not previously accessible in the typical two-electron reaction manifolds that dominate palladium catalysis. We report that T-shaped organopalladium(ii) complexes coordinated by a bulky monophosphine, a class of organometallic intermediate featured in a range of contemporary catalytic reactions, undergo blue light-promoted bond weakening leading to mild and efficient homolytic cleavage of strong Pd(ii)-C(sp3) bonds under ambient conditions. The origin of light-triggered radical formation in these systems, which lack an obvious ligand-based chromophore (i.e., π-systems), was investigated using a combination of DFT calculations, photoactinometry, and transient absorption spectroscopy. The available data suggest T-shaped organopalladium(ii) complexes manifest unusual blue light-accessible Pd-to-C(sp3) transition. The quantum efficiency and excited state lifetime of this process were unexpectedly superior compared to a prototypical (α-diimine)Pd(ii) complex featuring a low-lying, ligand-centered LUMO (π*). These results suggest coordinatively-unsaturated organopalladium(ii) compounds, catalysts in myriad catalytic processes, have untapped potential for one-electron reactivity under visible light excitation.

A Nickel Anchored Covalent Organic Framework as Unimolecular Metallaphotocatalyst for Visible Light Driver C-P Bond Coupling Reaction

The urgent need to develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly method for synthesizing organophosphine compounds is underscored by their extensive applications in organic synthesis, coordination chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and photoelectric materials. Metalated covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs), which seamlessly integrate the inherent photo properties of COF with the catalytic capabilities of metal ions, offer an optimal material for efficient transformation of organics sustainably. In this study, we introduce a simple COF with nickel anchorages (Bpy-COF-NiCl2 ) as a unimolecular metallaphotocatalytic system for effective C-P bond formation. This heterogeneous photocatalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance, achieving yields of up to 95 %, and demonstrates broad substrate tolerance and functional group reactivity. Notably, the metallaphotocatalytic system has demonstrated the capability to process aryl bromides to produce the desired product, a feat not previously reported. Finally, the production and reusability test at the gram scale attests to its superior practicality for designing future organic cross-coupling reactions.

Two Synthetic Tools to Deepen the Understanding of the Influence of Stereochemistry on the Properties of Iridium(III) Heteroleptic Emitters

Two complementary procedures are presented to prepare cis-pyridyl-iridium(III) emitters of the class [3b+3b+3b'] with two orthometalated ligands of the 2-phenylpyridine type (3b) and a third ligand (3b'). They allowed to obtain four emitters of this class and to compare their properties with those of the trans-pyridyl isomers. The finding starts from IrH5(PiPr3)2, which reacts with 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine to give fac-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}3] with an almost quantitative yield. Stirring the latter in the appropriate amount of a saturated solution of HCl in toluene results in the cis-pyridyl adduct IrCl{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ1-Cl-[Cl-H-py-C6MeH4]} stabilized with p-tolylpyridinium chloride, which can also be transformed into dimer cis-[Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2]2. Adduct IrCl{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ1-Cl-[Cl-H-py-C6MeH4]} directly generates cis-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-C,N-[C6H4-Isoqui]}] and cis-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-C,N-[C6H4-py]}] by transmetalation from Li[2-(isoquinolin-1-yl)-C6H4] and Li[py-2-C6H4]. Dimer cis-[Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2]2 is also a useful starting complex when the precursor molecule of 3b' has a fairly acidic hydrogen atom, suitable for removal by hydroxide groups. Thus, its reactions with 2-picolinic acid and acetylacetone (Hacac) lead to cis-Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-O,N-[OC(O)-py]} and cis-Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-O,O-[acac]}. The stereochemistry of the emitter does not significantly influence the emission wavelengths. On the contrary, its efficiency is highly dependent on and associated with the stability of the isomer. The more stable isomer shows a higher quantum yield and color purity.

Defluorinative Alkylboration of Alkenes Enabled by Dual Photoredox and Copper Catalysis

A regioselectivity reversed three-component defluorinative alkylboration of alkenes with trifluoromethyls and bis(pinacolato)diboron via dual photoredox/copper catalysis is reported. The mild conditions are compatible with a wide array of nonactivated trifluoromethyl aromatics bearing electron-donating or electron-neutral substituents, trifluoroacetamides, and various nonactivated terminal and internal alkenes, enabling straightforward access to synthetically valuable γ-gem-difluoroalkyl boronates with high efficiency. Furthermore, this protocol is applicable to alkene-tethered trifluoromethyl aromatics to furnish gem-difluoromethylene-containing cyclic compounds. Synthetic applications and preliminary mechanistic studies are also presented.

Photosensitizer-free visible-light-promoted glycosylation enabled by 2-glycosyloxy tropone donors

Photochemical glycosylation has attracted considerable attention in carbohydrate chemistry. However, to the best of our knowledge, visible-light-promoted glycosylation via photoactive glycosyl donor has not been reported. In the study, we report a photosensitizer-free visible-light-mediated glycosylation approach using a photoactive 2-glycosyloxy tropone as the donor. This glycosylation reaction proceeds at ambient temperature to give a wide range of O-glycosides or oligosaccharides with yields up to 99%. This method is further applied in the stereoselective preparation of various functional glycosyl phosphates/phosphosaccharides, the construction of N-glycosides/nucleosides, and the late-stage glycosylation of natural products or pharmaceuticals on gram scales, and the iterative synthesis of hexasaccharide. The protocol features uncomplicated conditions, operational simplicity, wide substrate scope (58 examples), excellent compatibility with functional groups, scalability of products (7 examples), and high yields. It provides an efficient glycosylation method for accessing O/N-glycosides and glycans.

Visible-Light-Induced Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Aryl Bromides with Nitriles

Herein, a visible-light-induced nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl bromide with nitrile has been reported. By utilization of readily available nitriles as carbonyl precursors, a range of structurally diverse aryl ketones were facilely constructed. The synthetic simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and acidic functional group tolerance would broaden the synthetic utilities of this developed protocol as an expedient alternative to Grignard/organolithium protocols.

Nickel/photoredox dual catalyzed arylalkylation of nonactivated alkenes

Alkene dicarbofunctionalization is an efficient strategy and operation-economic fashion for introducing complexity in molecules. A nickel/photoredox dual catalyzed arylalkylation of nonactivated alkenes for the simultaneous construction of one C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond and one C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond has been developed. The mild catalytic method provided valuable indanethylamine derivatives with wide substrate scope and good functional group compatibility. An enantioselective dicarbofunctionalization was also achieved with pyridine-oxazoline as a ligand. The efficiency of metallaphotoredox dicarbofunctionalization was demonstrated for the concise synthesis of pharmaceutically active compounds.

Modular preparation of cationic bipyridines and azaarenes via C-H activation

Bipyridines are ubiquitous in organic and inorganic chemistry because of their redox and photochemical properties and their utility as ligands to transition metals. Cationic substituents on bipyridines and azaarenes are valuable as powerful electron-withdrawing functionalities that also enhance solubility in polar solvents, but there are no general methods for direct functionalization. A versatile method for the preparation of trimethylammonium- and triarylphosphonium-substituted bipyridines and azaheterocycles is disclosed. This methodology showcases a C-H activation of pyridine N-oxides that enables a highly modular and scalable synthesis of a diverse array of cationically charged azaarenes. The addition of trimethylammonium functionalities on bipyridine derivatives resulted in more anodic reduction potentials (up to 700 mV) and increased electrochemical reversibility compared to the neutral unfunctionalized bipyridine. Additonally, metallation of 4-triphenylphosphinated biquinoline to make the corresponding Re(CO)3Cl complex resulted in reduction potentials 400 mV more anodic than the neutral derivative.

Dual Transition Metal Electrocatalysis: Direct Decarboxylative Alkenylation of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids

Direct decarboxylative alkenylation of widely available aliphatic carboxylic acids with vinyl halides for the synthesis of alkenes with all substitution patterns has been accomplished by means of Ce/Ni dual transition metal electrocatalysis. The reactions employ alkyl acids as the limiting reagents and exhibit a broad scope with respect to both coupling partners. Notably, simple primary alkyl carboxylic acids could be readily engaged as carbon-centered radical precursors in the reaction. This new alkenylation protocol has been successfully demonstrated in direct modification of naturally occurring complex acids and is amenable to the enantioselective decarboxylative alkenylation of arylacetic acid. Mechanistic studies, including a series of controlled experiments and cyclic voltammetry data, allow us to probe the key intermediates and the pathway of the reaction.

A Chiral Titanocene Complex as Regiodivergent Photoredox Catalyst: Synthetic Scope and Mechanism of Catalyst Generation

We describe a combined synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational study of a chiral titanocene complex as a regiodivergent photoredox catalyst (PRC). With Kagan's complex catCl2 either monoprotected 1,3-diols or 1,4-diols can be obtained in high selectivity from a common epoxide substrate in a regiodivergent epoxide opening depending on which enantiomer of the catalyst is employed. Due to the catalyst-controlled regioselectivity of ring opening and the broader substrate scope, the PRC with catCl2 is also a highly attractive branching point for diversity-oriented synthesis. The photochemical processes of cat(NCS)2, a suitable model for catCl2, were probed by time-correlated single-photon counting. The photoexcited complex displays a thermally activated delayed fluorescence as a result of a singlet-triplet equilibration, S1 ⇄ T1, via intersystem crossing and recrossing. Its triplet state is quenched by electron transfer to the T1 state. Computational and cyclic voltammetry studies highlight the importance of our sulfonamide additive. By bonding to sulfonamide additives, chloride abstraction from [catCl2]- is facilitated, and catalyst deactivation by coordination of the sulfonamide group is circumvented.

Development and application of decatungstate catalyzed C-H 18F- and 19F-fluorination, fluoroalkylation and beyond

Over the past few decades, photocatalytic C-H functionalization reactions have received increasing attention due to the often mild reaction conditions and complementary selectivities to conventional functionalization processes. Now, photocatalytic C-H functionalization is a widely employed tool, supporting activities ranging from complex molecule synthesis to late-stage structure-activity relationship studies. In this perspective, we will discuss our efforts in developing a photocatalytic decatungstate catalyzed C-H fluorination reaction as well as its practical application realized through collaborations with industry partners at Hoffmann-La Roche and Merck, and extension to radiofluorination with radiopharmaceutical chemists and imaging experts at TRIUMF and the BC Cancer Agency. Importantly, we feel that our efforts address a question of utility posed by Professor Tobias Ritter in "Late-Stage Fluorination: Fancy Novelty or Useful Tool?" (ACIE, 2015, 54, 3216). In addition, we will discuss decatungstate catalyzed C-H fluoroalkylation and the interesting electrostatic effects observed in decatungstate-catalyzed C-H functionalization. We hope this perspective will inspire other researchers to explore the use of decatungstate for the purposes of photocatalytic C-H functionalization and further advance the exploitation of electrostatic effects for both rate acceleration and directing effects in these reactions.

Recent advancements in iodide/phosphine-mediated photoredox radical reactions

Photoredox catalysis plays a crucial role in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. Since the groundbreaking work of Shang and Fu on photocatalytic decarboxylative alkylations in 2019, a wide range of organic transformations, such as alkylation, alkenylation, cyclization, amination, iodination, and monofluoromethylation, have been progressively achieved using a combination of iodide and PPh3. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advancements in inexpensive and readily available iodide/phosphine-mediated photoredox radical transformations.
