Abstract
CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been well demonstrated as an antioxidant in protecting against oxidative stress-induced cellular damages and a potential therapeutic agent for various diseases thanks to their redox enzyme-mimicking activities. The Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and oxygen vacancies on the surface have been considered as the major originations responsible for the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of CeO2 NPs. Herein, CeO2 nanostructures (nanocubes and nanorods) exposed different facets were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The characterizations by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy show that the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and oxygen vacancy content on the surfaces of as-synthesized CeO2 nanostructures are nearly at the same levels. Meanwhile, the enzymatic activity measurements indicate that the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of as-synthesized CeO2 nanostructures are greatly dependent on their exposed facets. CeO2 nanocubes with exposed {100} facets exhibit a higher peroxidase but lower superoxide dismutase activity than those of the CeO2 nanorods with exposed {110} facets. Our results provide new insights into the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of CeO2 nanostructures, as well as the design and synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials-based artificial enzymes.

Abstract
Nanomaterial-based enzyme mimetics (nanozymes) is an emerging field of research that promises to produce alternatives to natural enzymes for a variety of applications. The search for the most cost-effective and efficient inorganic nanomaterials, such as metal oxides, cannot be won by pristine CuO. However, unlike CuO, the Zn-doped CuO (Zn-CuO) nanoparticles reported in this paper reveal superior peroxidase-like enzyme activity. This places Zn-CuO in a good position to participate in a range of activities aimed at developing diverse enzyme applications. The peroxidase-like activity was tested and confirmed against various chromogenic substrates in the presence of H2O2 and obeyed the Michaelis-Menten enzymatic pathway. The mechanism of enhanced enzymatic activity was proved by employing terephthalic acid as a fluorescence probe and by electron spin resonance. The nanozyme, when tested for the detection of glucose, showed a substantial enhancement in the detection selectivity. The limit of detection (LOD) was also decreased reaching a limit as low as 0.27 ppm. Such a low LOD has not been reported so far for the metal oxides without any surface modifications. Moreover, the nanozyme (Zn-CuO) was utilized to detect the three antioxidants tannic acid, tartaric acid, and ascorbic acid and the relative strength of their antioxidant capacity was compared.

Abstract
Lanthanide coordination polymer nanoparticles (Ln-CPNs) have been recently demonstrated as excellent platforms for biomolecule detection. In this work, we synthesized novel cerium coordination polymer nanoparticles ATP-Ce-Tris CPNs in a simple and quick way using ATP molecules as the biocompatible ligands to Ce(3+) ions in tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloric (Tris-HCl) solution. In view of the excellent free radical scavenging property of cerium compounds, which is ascribed to the mixed valence state (Ce(3+), Ce(4+)) and the reversible switch from Ce(3+) to Ce(4+), the synthesized ATP-Ce-Tris CPNs was used as artificial peroxidase to selectively and sensitively detect H2O2. The sensing mechanism depends on the oxidation of the fluorescent ATP-Ce(III)-Tris CPNs to nonfluorescent ATP-Ce(IV)-Tris CPNs by H2O2. Compared with those inorganic cerium oxide sensors, this kind of fluoresence ATP-Ce-Tris CPNs sensor needs no additional organic redox dye, such as ABTS (2,20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), TMB (3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine), or fluorescein as signal molecules. Moreover, such ATP-Ce-Tris CPNs sensor exhibited a more sensitive response to H2O2 with a detection limit down to 0.6 nM, which is 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of cerium oxide sensors. This sensing platform was further extended to the detection of glucose in combination with the specific catalytic effect of glucose oxidase (GOx) for the oxidation of glucose and formation of H2O2.

Abstract
In this work, a sensitive electrochemical aptasensor was designed for lipopolysaccharide (LPS) detection based on Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) and Zn(2+) dependent DNAzyme-assisted recycling as dual signal amplifiers. Herein, Ce-MOFs were decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to obtain AuNPs/Ce-MOFs, and the resultant AuNPs/Ce-MOFs not only acted as nanocarriers to capture -SH terminated hairpin probes 2 (HP2) for acquiring HP2/AuNPs/Ce-MOFs signal probes, but also as catalysts to catalyze the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA). In the presence of target LPS, report DNA was released from the prepared duplex DNA and then hybridized with hairpin probes 1 (HP1, which were immobilized on the electrode). With the help of Zn(2+), report DNA could act as Zn(2+) dependent DNAzyme to cleave HP1 circularly. Then a large amount of capture probes were produced on the electrode to combine with HP2/AuNPs/Ce-MOFs signal probes. When the detection solution contained electrochemical substrate of AA, AuNPs/Ce-MOFs could oxide AA to obtain enhanced signal. Under the optimized conditions, this proposed aptasensor for LPS exhibited a low detection limit of 3.3 fg/mL with a wide linear range from 10fg/mL to 100ng/mL.

Abstract
In this work, a new kind of peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme (G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme, G4-hemin) was constructed by using hemin-modified G-rich DNA (hemin-G-DNA). Experimental results demonstrated that the G-rich DNA can form a G-quadruplex structure by the inducement of terminally modified hemin, rendering the assembly of hemin and G-quadruplex structure spontaneously and efficiently. As a result, G-hemin revealed higher peroxidase activity than traditional G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme (G4/hemin). Besides, different from G4/hemin, G4-hemin was constructed in one step without the participation of metal ions and adscititious hemin. Accordingly, the construction procedure was significantly simplified and the background signal from dissociative hemin was remarkably reduced. In a proof-of-concept trial, according to the colorimetric signals of G4-hemin, a novel biosensor for the detection of S1 nuclease activity was established, which provides a novel perspective for designing peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme-based biosensors.
