Abstract
The domain based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster method with single-, double-, and perturbative triple excitations (DLPNO–CCSD(T)) is an efficient quantum chemical method that allows for coupled cluster calculations on molecules with hundreds of atoms. Because coupled-cluster theory is the method of choice if high-accuracy is needed, DLPNO–CCSD(T) is very promising for large-scale chemical application. However, the various approximations that have to be introduced in order to reach near linear scaling also introduce limited deviations from the canonical results. In the present work, we investigate how far the accuracy of the DLPNO–CCSD(T) method can be pushed for chemical applications. We also address the question at which additional computational cost improvements, relative to the previously established default scheme, come. To answer these questions, a series of benchmark sets covering a broad range of quantum chemical applications including reaction energies, hydrogen bonds, and other noncovalent interactions, conformer energies, and a prototype organometallic problem were selected. An accuracy of 1 kcal/mol or better can readily be obtained for all data sets using the default truncation scheme, which corresponds to the stated goal of the original implementation. Tightening of the three thresholds that control DLPNO leads to mean absolute errors and standard deviations from the canonical results of less than 0.25 kcal/mol (<1 kJ/mol). The price one has then to pay is an increased computational time by a factor close to 3. The applicability of the method is shown to be independent of the nature of the reaction. On the basis of the careful analysis of the results, three different sets of truncation thresholds (termed “LoosePNO”, “NormalPNO”, and “TightPNO”) have been chosen for “black box” use of DLPNO–CCSD(T). This will allow users of the method to optimally balance performance and accuracy.

Abstract
The main-group 6p elements did not receive much attention in the development of recent density functionals. In many cases it is still difficult to choose among the modern ones a relevant functional for various applications. Here, we illustrate the case of astatine species (At, Z = 85) and we report the first, and quite complete, benchmark study on several properties concerning such species. Insights on geometries, transition energies and thermodynamic properties of a set of 19 astatine species, for which reference experimental or theoretical data has been reported, are obtained with relativistic (two-component) density functional theory calculations. An extensive set of widely used functionals is employed. The hybrid meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) PW6B95 functional is overall the best choice. It is worth noting that the range-separated HSE06 functional as well as the old and very popular B3LYP and PBE0 hybrid-GGAs appear to perform quite well too. Moreover, we found that astatine chemistry in solution can accurately be predicted using implicit solvent models, provided that specific parameters are used to build At cavities. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
DFT calculations show that the competition between carbonylation and isomerisation pathways using Pd/phosphine catalysts can be steered toward the desired carbonylation using less bulky ligands. Thus, the normally less effective phanephos family forms carbonylation products with good ee.

Abstract
Excitation energies of closed-shell systems based on the equation-of-motion (EOM) coupled-cluster theory at the singles and doubles (CCSD) level with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) included in the post-Hartree-Fock treatment are implemented in the present work. SOC can be included in both the CC and EOM steps (EOM-SOC-CCSD) or only in the EOM part (SOC-EOM-CCSD). The latter approach is an economical way to account for SOC effects, but excitation energies with this approach are not size-intensive. When the unlinked term in the latter approach is neglected (cSOC-EOM-CCSD), size-intensive excitation energies can be obtained. Time-reversal symmetry and spatial symmetry are exploited to reduce the computational effort. Imposing time-reversal symmetry results in a real matrix representation for the similarity-transformed Hamiltonian, which facilitates the requirement of time-reversal symmetry for new trial vectors in Davidson's algorithm. Results on some closed-shell atoms and molecules containing heavy elements show that EOM-SOC-CCSD can provide excitation energies and spin-orbit splittings with reasonable accuracy. On the other hand, the SOC-EOM-CCSD approach is able to afford accurate estimates of SOC effects for valence electrons of systems containing elements up to the fifth row, while cSOC-EOM-CCSD is less accurate for spin-orbit splittings of transitions involving p1/2 spinors, even for Kr.

Abstract
In the so-called scalable regime the size-dependent behavior of the physical and chemical properties of transition metal clusters is described by scaling relationships. For most quantities this scalable regime is reached for cluster sizes between a few tens and a few hundreds of atoms, hence for systems for which an accurate treatment by density functional theory is still feasible. Thus, by invoking scaling relations one is able to obtain properties of very large nanoparticles and even the bulk limit from the results of a series of smaller cluster models. In this invited review we illustrate this strategy by exploiting results from computational studies that mostly were carried out with the density functional theory software ParaGauss. We address mainly the size-dependent behavior of the properties of transition metal clusters. To this end, we first present benchmark studies probing various approximations that are used in such density functional calculations. Subsequently we show how physical insight may be gained by exploring less understood types of systems. These applications range from bare clusters to nanoislands and nanoalloys to adsorption complexes.

Abstract
The asymmetric catalysis of the intramolecular enone [2+2] photocycloaddition has been subject of extensive experimental studies, however theoretical insight to its regulatory mechanism is still sparse. Accurate quantum chemical calculations at the CASPT2//CASSCF level of theory associated with energy-consistent relativistic pseudopotentials provide a basis for the first regulation theory that the enantioselective reaction is predominantly controlled by the presence of relativistic effects, that is, spin-orbit coupling resulting from heavy atoms in the chiral Lewis acid catalyst.

Abstract
An efficient perturbational treatment of spin-orbit coupling within the framework of high-level multi-reference techniques has been implemented in the most recent version of the Columbus quantum chemistry package, extending the existing fully variational two-component (2c) multi-reference configuration interaction singles and doubles (MRCISD) method. The proposed scheme follows related implementations of quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) model space techniques. Our model space is built either from uncontracted, large-scale scalar relativistic MRCISD wavefunctions or based on the scalar-relativistic solutions of the linear-response-theory-based multi-configurational averaged quadratic coupled cluster method (LRT-MRAQCC). The latter approach allows for a consistent, approximatively size-consistent and size-extensive treatment of spin-orbit coupling. The approach is described in detail and compared to a number of related techniques. The inherent accuracy of the QDPT approach is validated by comparing cuts of the potential energy surfaces of acrolein and its S, Se, and Te analoga with the corresponding data obtained from matching fully variational spin-orbit MRCISD calculations. The conceptual availability of approximate analytic gradients with respect to geometrical displacements is an attractive feature of the 2c-QDPT-MRCISD and 2c-QDPT-LRT-MRAQCC methods for structure optimization and ab inito molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract
Quantum mechanical (QM) + molecular mechanics (MM) models are developed to represent potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the HBr(+) + CO2 → Br + HOCO(+) reaction with HBr(+) in the (2)Π3/2 and (2)Π1/2 spin-orbit states. The QM component is the spin-free PES and spin-orbit coupling for each state is represented by a MM-like analytic potential fit to spin-orbit electronic structure calculations. Coupled-cluster single double and perturbative triple excitation (CCSD(T)) calculations are performed to obtain "benchmark" reaction energies without spin-orbit coupling. With zero-point energies removed, the "experimental" reaction energy is 44 ± 5 meV for HBr(+)((2)Π3/2) + CO2 → Br((2)P3/2) + HOCO(+), while the CCSD(T) value with spin-orbit effects included is 87 meV. Electronic structure calculations were performed to determine properties of the BrHOCO(+) reaction intermediate and [HBr⋯OCO](+) van der Waals intermediate. The results of different electronic structure methods were compared with those obtained with CCSD(T), and UMP2/cc-pVTZ/PP was found to be a practical and accurate QM method to use in QM/MM direct dynamics simulations. The spin-orbit coupling calculations show that the spin-free QM PES gives a quite good representation of the shape of the PES originated by (2)Π3/2HBr(+). This is also the case for the reactant region of the PES for (2)Π1/2 HBr(+), but spin-orbit coupling effects are important for the exit-channel region of this PES. A MM model was developed to represent these effects, which were combined with the spin-free QM PES.

Abstract
Lanthanide trihalide molecules LnX3 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) were quantum chemically investigated, in particular detail for Ln = Lu (lutetium). We applied density functional theory (DFT) at the nonrelativistic and scalar and SO-coupled relativistic levels, and also the ab initio coupled cluster approach. The chemically active electron shells of the lanthanide atoms comprise the 5d and 6s (and 6p) valence atomic orbitals (AO) and also the filled inner 4f semivalence and outer 5p semicore shells. Four different frozen-core approximations for Lu were compared: the (1s(2) -4d(10) ) [Pd] medium core, the [Pd+5s(2) 5p(6) = Xe] and [Pd+4f(14) ] large cores, and the [Pd+4f(14) +5s(2) 5p(6) ] very large core. The errors of LuX bonding are more serious on freezing the 5p(6) shell than the 4f(14) shell, more serious upon core-freezing than on the effective-core-potential approximation. The LnX distances correlate linearly with the AO radii of the ionic outer shells, Ln(3+) -5p(6) and X(-) -np(6) , characteristic for dominantly ionic Ln(3+) -X(-) binding. The heavier halogen atoms also bind covalently with the Ln-5d shell. Scalar relativistic effects contract and destabilize the LuX bonds, spin orbit coupling hardly affects the geometries but the bond energies, owing to SO effects in the free atoms. The relativistic changes of bond energy BE, bond length Re , bond force k, and bond stretching frequency vs do not follow the simple rules of Badger and Gordy (Re ∼BE∼k∼vs ). The so-called degeneracy-driven covalence, meaning strong mixing of accidentally near-degenerate, nearly nonoverlapping AOs without BE contribution is critically discussed.

Abstract
Understanding the influence of electrons in partially filled f- and d-orbitals on bonding and reactivity is a key issue for actinide chemistry. This question can be investigated by using a combination of well-defined experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Gas phase spectroscopic data are particularly valuable for the evaluation of theoretical models. Consequently, the primary objectives of our research have been to obtain gas phase spectra for small actinide molecules. To complement the experimental effort, we are investigating the potential for using relativistic ab initio calculations and semiempirical models to predict and interpret the electronic energy level patterns for f-element compounds. Multiple resonance spectroscopy and jet cooling techniques have been used to unravel the complex electronic spectra of Th and U compounds. Recent results for fluorides, sulfides, and nitrides are discussed.

Abstract
Computational chemistry currently lacks ad hoc tools for probing the nature of chemical bonds in heavy and superheavy-atom systems where the consideration of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects is mandatory. We report an implementation of the Quantum Theory of Atoms-In-Molecules in the framework of two-component relativistic calculations. Used in conjunction with the topological analysis of the Electron Localization Function, we show for astatine (At) species that SOC significantly lowers At electronegativity and boosts its propensity to make charge-shift bonds. Relativistic spin-dependent effects are furthermore able to change some bonds from mainly covalent to charge-shift type. The implication of the disclosed features regarding the rationalization of the labeling protocols used in nuclear medicine for (211)At radioisotope nicely illustrates the potential of the introduced methodology for investigating the chemistry of (super)heavy elements.

Abstract
An algorithm of the accompanying coordinate expansion and recurrence relation (ACE-RR), which is used for the rapid evaluation of the electron repulsion integral (ERI), has been extended to the general-contraction (GC) scheme. The present algorithm, denoted by GC-ACE-RR, is designed for molecular calculations including heavy elements, whose orbitals consist of many primitive functions with and without higher angular momentum such as d- and f-orbitals. The performance of GC-ACE-RR was assessed for (ss|ss)-, (pp|pp)-, (dd|dd)-, and (ff|ff)-type ERIs in terms of contraction length and the number of GC orbitals. The present algorithm was found to reduce the central processing unit time compared with the ACE-RR algorithm, especially for higher angular momentum and highly contracted orbitals. Compared with HONDOPLUS and GAMESS program packages, GC-ACE-RR computations for ERIs of three-dimensional gold clusters Aun (n = 1, 2, …, 10, 15, 20, and 25) are more than 10 times faster.
