Abstract
A kinetic study of the oxidative addition reaction of diarylplatinum(II) complexes [Pt(p-MeC(6)H(4))(2)(NN)] (1a: NN = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 1b: NN = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine ((t)Bu(2)bpy)) with MeI in ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([bmim][bta]) or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF(4)]) is described. The reactions were investigated as a function of MeI concentration and temperature under pseudo-first-order conditions using UV-vis spectroscopy techniques. In general, the oxidative addition reactions in ionic liquids followed an S(N)2 mechanism, similar to that reported for the related reactions in conventional solvents, e.g. benzene or acetone. The reaction rates in different solvents followed the order acetone > ionic liquids > benzene. The trend in the values of k(2) clearly indicated that ionic liquids behave like conventional solvents and that no particular 'ionic liquid effect' was detected in this kind of reaction. The effect of solvent on the reactions was examined using a linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) based on the Kamlet-Taft solvent scale. The activation parameters, DeltaH(++) and DeltaS(++), were obtained for the reactions in each solvent and the investigation of enthalpy-entropy compensation confirmed that the mechanism operated in all solvents is similar.

Abstract
The reaction of (bipy)PdMe(2) (1) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with molecular oxygen results in the formation of the palladium(II) methylperoxide complex (bipy)PdMe(OOMe) (2). The identity of the product 2 has been confirmed by independent synthesis. Results of kinetic studies of this unprecedented oxygen insertion reaction into a palladium alkyl bond support the involvement of a radical chain mechanism. Reproducible rates, attained in the presence of the radical initiator 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN), reveal that the reaction is overall first-order (one-half-order in both [1] and [AIBN], and zero-order in [O(2)]). The unusual rate law (half-order in [1]) implies that the reaction proceeds by a mechanism that differs significantly from those for organic autoxidations and for the recently reported examples of insertion of O(2) into Pd(II) hydride bonds. The mechanism for the autoxidation of 1 is more closely related to that found for the autoxidation of main group and early transition metal alkyl complexes. Notably, the chain propagation is proposed to proceed via a stepwise associative homolytic substitution at the Pd center of 1 with formation of a pentacoordinate Pd(III) intermediate.

Abstract
A study of the reaction of PtMe(2)(bipy) with IPh(C[triple bond]CSiMe(3))(OTf) at low temperature in acetone, leading to detection of the Pt-Pt-bonded cation [Pt(2)Me(4)(C[triple bond]CSiMe(3))(bipy)(2)](+), an intermediate in the oxidation of Pt(II) to Pt(IV), is reported. The cation is assessed as Pt(III)-Pt(III) <--> Pt(IV)-Pt(II), and at the other extreme may be regarded as a cationic alkynylplatinum(IV) center, "[Pt(IV)Me(2)(C[triple bond]CSiMe(3))(bipy)](+)", stabilized by "Pt(II)Me(2)(bipy)" as a donor ligand. The detection and isolation of the [Pt(2)Me(4)(C[triple bond]CSiMe(3))(bipy)(2)](+) cation provides a number of insights into the mechanisms of oxidation reactions.

Abstract
The oxidative addition of alkyl bromides RCH2Br (R = C5H4N, C6H4CN, CH2C6H4CO2H, or CH2C6H4CH2CO2H) to dimethylplatinum(II) complexes [PtMe2(LL)] (LL = diimine ligand) gives the corresponding organoplatinum(IV) complexes [PtBrMe2(CH2R)(LL)] containing functionality in the alkyl group RCH2. The pyridyl derivatives can be protonated, while abstraction of the bromide ligand from [PtBrMe2(CH2R)(LL)] can form cationic complexes, which can react with water or form oligomers by self-assembly.

Abstract
Oxidative addition of primary, secondary, or benzylic perfluoroalkyl iodides (RF–I) to the phosphine free Ir(I) precursor Ir(acac)(CO)2 1 (acac = 2,4-pentanedionato) proceeds smoothly to afford octahedral Ir(III) products Ir(acac)(I)(RF)(CO)2, A combination of X-ray crystallographic studies and solution spectroscopy shows that these products are the result of overall trans-addition of the C–I bond to iridium, probably a result of thermodynamic control; evidence for a kinetic product resulting from net cis-addition is obtained in one case. Treatment of the Ir(III) compounds with AgOTf (Tf = CF3SO3) illustrates that the iodo ligand is replaced by triflate with retention of stereochemistry at Ir. The resulting triflate complexes are inert to displacement by H2O or H2. The Ir(III) products exhibit very high CO stretching frequencies in the IR, indicating that the CO ligands may be non-classical. A quantitative estimation of the degree of backbonding to the CO ligands in these compounds, and a comparison of the π-acceptor properties of CO and fluoroalkyl ligands, is made using an approach based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Natural Bond Orbital analyses.Key words: iridium, fluoroalkyl, oxidation, carbonyl, DFT.

Abstract
In this perspective article we give an overview of our studies of C–H activation with platinum over the past decade. The scorpionate ligand Tp′ (Tp′ = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) has exhibited the ability to stabilize both Pt(IV) and Pt(II) complexes due to flexibility between κ3 and κ2 binding modes. Control of the Tp′ coordination mode and Pt oxidation state is tightly coupled with acid/base chemistry. This ability allowed us to model a spectrum of intermediates in C–H activation reactions, including Pt(IV) alkyl hydrides, five-coordinate Pt(IV) silyl hydrides, and Pt(II) benzene complexes. We have been able to observe sturdy Pt(II) benzene complexes and probe their equilibria with the respective C–H activated Pt(IV) species in the presence of an added ligand. We have also taken steps toward functionalizing hydrocarbons with Tp′Pt by dehydrogenation of alkanes and by arylation of olefins. We have recently turned to bidentate nacnac (nacnac = N-phenyl-β-enamineimine) ligands in the hopes of catalytically functionalizing hydrocarbons.Key words: C–H activation, reductive elimination, Tp′Pt, five-coordinate, β-diiminate.

Abstract
The compounds [Pt(MesBIAN)(C[triple bond]CR)2] (R = C6H4-CN-p, 1; SiMe3, 2; C6H4-CF3-p, 3; C6H5, 4; C6H4-CH3-p 5) {MesBIAN = bis(mesitylimino)acenaphthene} have been synthesized; the X-ray crystal structure determinations of 4 and 5 and the starting material [Pt(MesBIAN)Cl2] are reported. Chemical oxidation of 4 with diiodine leads to generation of an intermediate platinum(IV) bis(acetylide) diiodide complex, which then couples and reductively eliminates the acetylide ligands as a diyne, leading to the generation of [Pt(MesBIAN)I2] 6. Compound 2 readily forms an adduct 2a with copper(I) chloride, in which the copper atom is bonded to the two acetylide triple bonds. 1-5 each undergo an irreversible oxidation, and a reversible one-electron reduction to generate a stable anion. ESR studies of 1(-)-5(-) show that the unpaired electron is localized mainly on the pi* orbital of the coordinated MesBIAN ligand, with about 10% platinum contribution to the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO). The compounds show a strong absorption at around 500 nm in the UV/visible spectrum, which is assigned to a "mixed metal-ligand to ligand charge transfer" (MMLL'CT) transition; this assignment is supported by time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations on 5. 1-5 emit in the near-infrared region from a (3)MMLL'CT excited state, with lifetimes ranging from 8 to 36 ns. Picosecond and nanosecond time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy has been used to probe directly the nature and dynamics of the excited state of 5. The TRIR data show a decrease of the energy of the C[triple bond]C vibration upon excitation, by about 90 cm(-1) in comparison to the ground state, and formation of a new, very intense, and very broad band at 1820 cm(-1). We propose that the excited-state structure contains some contribution from a pseudo-cumulenic form of the platinum-acetylide moiety, which is supported by TD-DFT calculations. Picosecond TRIR allowed determination of the rate of vibrational relaxation (14 ps) of the vibrationally "hot" electronic excited state of 5 formed upon initial laser excitation.

Abstract
The binuclear complex [Pt2Me2(ppy)2(mu-dppf)], 1, in which ppy = deprotonated 2-phenylpyridyl and dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene, was synthesized by the reaction of [PtMe(SMe2)(ppy)] with 0.5 equiv of dppf at room temperature. In this reaction when 1 equiv of dppf was used, the dppf chelating complex 2, [PtMe(dppf)(ppy-kappa1C)], was obtained. The reaction of Pt(II)-Pt(II) complex 1 with excess MeI gave the Pt(IV)-Pt(IV) complex [Pt2I2Me4(ppy)2(mu-dppf)], 3. When the reaction was performed with 1 equiv of MeI, a mixture containing unreacted complex 1, a mixed-valence Pt(II)-Pt(IV) complex [PtMe(ppy)(mu-dppf)PtIMe2(ppy)], 4, and complex 3 was obtained. In a comparative study, the reaction of [PtMe(SMe2)(ppy)] with 1 equiv of monodentate phosphine PPh3 gave [PtMe(ppy)(PPh3)], A. MeI was reacted with A to give the platinum(IV) complex [PtMe2I(ppy)(PPh3)], C. All the complexes were fully characterized using multinuclear (1H, 31P, 13C, and 195Pt) NMR spectroscopy, and complex 2 was further identified by single crystal X-ray structure determination. The reaction of binuclear Pt(II)-Pt(II) complex 1 with excess MeI was monitored by low temperature 31P NMR spectroscopy and further by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the kinetics of the reaction was studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. On the basis of the data, a mechanism has been suggested for the reaction which overall involved stepwise oxidative addition of MeI to the two Pt(II) centers. In this suggested mechanism, the reaction proceeded through a number of Pt(II)-Pt(IV) and Pt(IV)-Pt(IV) intermediates. Although MeI in each step was trans oxidatively added to one of the Pt(II) centers, further trans to cis isomerizations of Me and I groups were also identified. A comparative kinetic study of the reaction of monomeric platinum(II) complex A with MeI was also performed. The rate of reaction of MeI with complex 1 was some 3.5 times faster than that with complex A, indicating that dppf in the complex 1, as compared with PPh 3 in the complex A, has significantly enhanced the electron richness of the platinum centers.
