Abstract
The inter- and intramolecular couplings of unactivated alkenes to 3,4-dihydroquinazolines with a Rh(I) catalyst are reported. Coupling between olefins and NH-3,4-dihydroquinazoline was found to occur consecutively with heterocycle dehydrogenation in the presence of a Rh(I)/PCy3/HCl catalyst. The reaction was used to develop an effective method for the synthesis of 2-substituted quinazolines through an oxidative workup step. The regiocontrolled synthesis and Rh-catalyzed cyclization of alkene-tethered 3,4-dihydroquinazolines are also described. Applying this method, the second total synthesis of vasicoline was achieved. The key Rh-catalyzed cyclization step was made possible by the use of a rigid bicyclic phosphine ligand. The synthesis further demonstrates a challenging Cu-catalyzed amidation of an ortho-substituted aryl chloride.

Abstract
2-Alkoxy-3-cyano-4,6-diarylpyridines 1a,b which were synthesized by condensation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones with malononitrils were subjected to Lewis acid-catalyzed nucleophilic displacement reaction with various amines to afford the corresponding 2-aminopyridines 3-21. The potency of the results as antibacterial agents has been evaluated. The structure of the newly prepared compounds was assessed by microanalysis, IR, and NMR spectra. Molecular modeling and QSAR methods are used to study the antibacterial activity of the active compounds by means of the molecular mechanic method.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] We report that Zn[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) is a mild ammonia equivalent and base for the palladium-catalyzed amination of aryl halides and triflates. In contrast to LiN(SiMe(3))(2), the combination of Zn[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) and LiCl coupled with aryl halides and triflates containing base-sensitive functionality in high yields. In addition, aryl bromides coupled with aryl and alkylamines with the combination of Zn[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) and LiCl as base. These aminations occurred without racemization of the enolizable stereocenter of an optically active ester.

Abstract
Oxidative insertion of [Pd(PPh3)4] or [Ni(cod)2]/PPh3 into the C-Cl bond of various 2-chloroimidazolinium- and other -amidinium salts affords metal-diaminocarbene complexes in good to excellent yields. This procedure is complementary to existing methodology in which the central metal does not change its oxidation state, and therefore allows to incorporate carbene fragments that are difficult to access otherwise. The preparation of a variety of achiral as well as enantiomerically pure, chiral metal-NHC complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and metal complexes with acyclic diaminocarbene ligands illustrates this aspect. Furthermore it is shown that oxidative insertion also paves a way to prototype Fischer carbenes of Pd(II). Since the required starting materials are readily available from urea- or thiourea derivatives, this novel approach allows for substantial structural variations of the ligand backbone. The catalytic performance of the resulting library of nickel- and palladium-carbene complexes has been evaluated by applications to prototype Suzuki-, Heck-, and Kumada-Corriu cross-coupling reactions as well as Buchwald-Hartwig aminations. It was found that even Fischer carbenes show appreciable catalytic activity. Moreover, representative examples of all types of neutral and cationic metal-carbene complexes formed in this study have been characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Transmetalation of an aminocarbene moiety from [W(CO)5{C(NEt2)R}] to palladium leads to isolable monoaminocarbene palladium aryl complexes [{Pd(mu-Br)Pf[C(NEt2)R]}2] (R = Me, Ph; Pf = C6F5). When [W(CO)5{C(OMe)R}] is used, the corresponding palladium carbenes cannot be isolated since these putative, more electrophilic carbenes undergo a fast migratory insertion process to give alkyl palladium complexes. These complexes could be stabilized in the eta3-allylic form for R = 2-phenylethenyl or in the less stable eta3-benzylic fashion for R = Ph. Hydrolysis products and a pentafluorophenylvinylic methyl ether (when R = Me) were also observed. The monoaminocarbenes slowly decompose through carbene-aryl coupling to produce the corresponding iminium salts and, depending on the reaction conditions, the corresponding hydrolysis products. The electrophilicity of the carbene carbon, which is mainly determined by the nature of the heteroatom group, controls the ease of evolution by carbene-aryl coupling. Accordingly, no carbene-aryl coupling was observed for a diaminocarbene palladium aryl complex.

Abstract
The double N-arylation of primary amines with 2,2'-biphenylylene ditriflates was investigated for the synthesis of multisubstituted carbazoles. Palladium complexes supported by 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2'-methylbiphenyl or Xantphos [4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene] were found to be efficient catalysts for the reaction. The catalysts allow the use of anilines with an electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituent and multisubstituted 2,2'-biphenylylene ditriflates as substrates. Ammonia equivalents, such as O-tert-butyl carbamate, are also employable as a nitrogen source to give the N-protected carbazoles which can easily give the corresponding N-unsubstituted carbazoles after deprotection. By using this methodology, a carbazole alkaloid, mukonine, is synthesized in 40% yield for five steps, in comparable efficiency to the recent precedents.

Abstract
Proazaphosphatrane ligands in combination with Pd(2)(dba)(3) generate highly active catalysts for Buchwald-Hartwig amination of aryl chlorides. In particular, commercially available P(i-BuNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N is a highly general and efficient ligand, allowing the coupling of an electronically diverse set of aryl chlorides, including chloropyridines, with a wide variety of amines using 1 mol % of Pd at 100 degrees C. Either a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio of ligand to Pd was found to be effective. This catalyst system performs exceptionally well for sterically hindered substrates, even with only 0.25 mol % of Pd. It is shown that NaOH can also be used as the base (instead of NaO-t-Bu) allowing functionalized substrates to participate in these reactions.

Abstract
In this paper, N-arylations between two heteroaryl compounds were studied. Conditions were found to generate selectively either 3- or 5-heteroarylamino-1,2,4-triazines by investigating anionic processes (use of bases such as 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylpiperidine/tBuOK/nBuLi) or Pd-catalyzed N-arylations [Pd(OAc)(2), xantphos]. These methods were successfully applied to a wide variety of heteroarylamines and allowed us to pursue our work on fused polynitrogen compounds synthesis.

Abstract
An air- and moisture-stable (pi-allyl)palladium complex bearing a unique diphosphinidenecyclobutene ligand effectively catalyzes amination reactions of aryl bromides with amines, where the reactions proceed under mild conditions without solvent, with 2 mol % of catalyst and 1 equiv of t-BuOK at room temperature. Under these conditions the amination products were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Amination of 5-bromo-2-chloropyridine (1a) catalyzed by a palladium-Xantphos complex predominately gives 5-amino-2-chloropyridine product 3a in 96% isolated yield and excellent chemoselectivity (3a/4a = 97:3). Amination of 2,5-dibromopyridine (11) under the same conditions exclusively affords 2-amino-5-bromopyridine 4a.

Abstract
The new bicyclic triaminophosphine ligand P(i-BuNCH2)3CMe (3) has been synthesized in three steps from commercially available materials and its efficacy in palladium-catalyzed reactions of aryl halides with an array of amines has been demonstrated. Electron-poor, electron-neutral, and electron-rich aryl bromides, chlorides, and iodides participated in the process. The reactions encompassed aromatic amines (primary or secondary) and secondary amines (cyclic or acyclic). It has also been shown that the weak base Cs2CO3 can be employed with ligand 3, allowing a variety of functionalized substrates (e.g., those containing esters and nitro groups) to be utilized in our amination protocols. This ligand provides a remarkably general, efficient, and mild palladium catalyst for aryl iodide amination. Although 3 is slightly air and moisture sensitive, easy procedures can be adopted that avoid the need of a glovebox. Comparisons of the efficacy of 3 in these reactions with that of the proazaphosphatrane P(i-BuNCH2CH2)3N (2) reveal that in addition to the opportunity for transannulation in 2 (but not in 3), other significant stereoelectronic contrasts exist between these two ligands which help account for differences in the activities of the Pd/2 and Pd/3 catalytic systems.

Abstract
When a THF solution of beta-lactam having propargyl phosphate was warmed in the presence of 5 mol % of Pd(2)(dba)(3) x CHCl(3), 20 mol % of a bidentate ligand, and sodium acetate (1.5 equiv) at 40 degrees C for 22 h, carbapenam was produced in high yield. In this reaction, the lactam nitrogen attacked the central carbon of a eta(3)-propargylpalladium complex, which was formed from propargyl phosphate and Pd(0).
