Hydrogen adsorption in metal-organic frameworks: the role of nuclear quantum effects

The role of nuclear quantum effects on the adsorption of molecular hydrogen in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been investigated on grounds of Grand-Canonical Quantized Liquid Density-Functional Theory (GC-QLDFT) calculations. For this purpose, we have carefully validated classical H2-host interaction potentials that are obtained by fitting Born-Oppenheimer ab initio reference data. The hydrogen adsorption has first been assessed classically using Liquid Density-Functional Theory and the Grand-Canonical Monte Carlo methods. The results have been compared against the semi-classical treatment of quantum effects by applying the Feynman-Hibbs correction to the Born-Oppenheimer-derived potentials, and by explicit treatment within the GC-QLDFT. The results are compared with experimental data and indicate pronounced quantum and possibly many-particle effects. After validation calculations have been carried out for IRMOF-1 (MOF-5), GC-QLDFT is applied to study the adsorption of H2 in a series of MOFs, including IRMOF-4, -6, -8, -9, -10, -12, -14, -16, -18, and MOF-177. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the H2 quantum fluid with increasing pressure and lowering temperature.

Screening of hypothetical metal-organic frameworks for H2 storage

Computational screening throughout a database containing ∼138 000 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been performed to select candidate structures for hydrogen storage. A total of 231 structures (of which 79 contain paddle-wheel units) have been selected that meet the gravimetric and volumetric targets at 100 atm and 77 K. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to calculate the isotherms and select structures which meet the targets at 50 atm, and also to check the adsorption in the low pressure regime (1 atm). From this a reduced set of 18 structures has been analysed in more detail, regarding not only gravimetric and volumetric uptake but also pore size distribution and pore volume. A few structures with 3% gravimetric uptake at 1 atm and 77 K perform at the best level found so far.

High-throughput computational screening of metal-organic frameworks

There is an almost unlimited number of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This creates exciting opportunities but also poses a problem: how do we quickly find the best MOFs for a given application? Molecular simulations have advanced sufficiently that many MOF properties - especially structural and gas adsorption properties - can be predicted computationally, and molecular modeling techniques are now used increasingly to guide the synthesis of new MOFs. With increasing computational power and improved simulation algorithms, it has become possible to conduct high-throughput computational screening to identify promising MOF structures and uncover structure-property relations. We review these efforts and discuss future directions in this new field.

Crystalline capsules: metal-organic frameworks locked by size-matching ligand bolts

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are shown to be good examples of a new class of crystalline porous materials for guest encapsulation. Since the encapsulation/release of guest molecules in MOF hosts is a reversible process in nature, how to prevent the leaching of guests from the open pores with minimal and nondestructive modifications of the structure is a critical issue. To address this issue, we herein propose a novel strategy of encapsulating guests by introducing size-matching organic ligands as bolts to lock the pores of the MOFs through deliberately anchoring onto the open metal sites in the pores. Our proposed strategy provides a mechanical way to prevent the leaching of guests and thereby has less dependence on the specific chemical environment of the hosts, thus making it applicable for a wide variety of existing MOFs once the size-matching ligands are employed.

Construction of sole benzene ring porous aromatic frameworks and their high adsorption properties

Porous organic frameworks (POFs), with their excellent performance in catalysis, electricity, sensor, gas storage, and separation, have attracted a great deal of attention from researchers all over the world. Generally, the monomers of POF materials require a rigid three-dimensional molecule configuration together with special functional groups, as well as being triggered by noble metal catalysts. Here we report a low-cost and easy-construction strategy for synthesizing PAF materials. A series of flat multi-benzene compounds are selected as building units, and those phenyl rings could couple together to form polymeric skeletons. The BET surface areas of resulting PAFs are moderate, ranging from 777 to 972 m(2) g(-1). However, they unexpectedly exhibit superior gas sorption capacities. At 1.0 bar and 77 K, the H2 uptake of PAF-48 reaches 215 cm(3) g(-1). In addition, PAF-49 shows excellent performance in carbon dioxide and methane sorption, with values of 104 and 35 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. With those adsorption properties, these PAF materials could be considered as potential candidates for energetic gas adsorbents.

Metal-organic frameworks for oxygen storage

We present a systematic study of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the storage of oxygen. The study starts with grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a suite of 10,000 MOFs for the adsorption of oxygen. From these data, the MOFs were down selected to the prime candidates of HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC) and NU-125, both with coordinatively unsaturated Cu sites. Oxygen isotherms up to 30 bar were measured at multiple temperatures to determine the isosteric heat of adsorption for oxygen on each MOF by fitting to a Toth isotherm model. High pressure (up to 140 bar) oxygen isotherms were measured for HKUST-1 and NU-125 to determine the working capacity of each MOF. Compared to the zeolite NaX and Norit activated carbon, NU-125 has an increased excess capacity for oxygen of 237% and 98%, respectively. These materials could ultimately prove useful for oxygen storage in medical, military, and aerospace applications.

Water Dynamics in Metal-Organic Frameworks: Effects of Heterogeneous Confinement Predicted by Computational Spectroscopy

The behavior of water confined in MIL-53(Cr), a flexible metal-organic framework (MOF), is investigated through computational infrared spectroscopy. As the number of molecules adsorbed inside of the pores increases, the water OH stretch band of the linear infrared spectrum grows in intensity and approaches that of bulk water. To assess whether the water confined in MIL-53(Cr) becomes liquid-like, two-dimensional infrared spectra (2DIR) are also calculated. Confinement effects result in distinct chemical environments that appear as specific features in the 2DIR spectra. The evolution of the 2DIR line shape as a function of waiting time is well described in terms of the orientational dynamics of the water molecules, with chemical exchange cross peaks appearing at a time scale similar to the hydrogen bond rearrangement lifetime. The confining environment considerably slows the hydrogen bond dynamics relative to bulk as a result of the competition between water-framework and water-water interactions.

Crystallographic studies of gas sorption in metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials of modular design. One of the primary applications of these materials is in the adsorption and separation of gases, with potential benefits to the energy, transport and medical sectors. In situ crystallography of MOFs under gas atmospheres has enabled the behaviour of the frameworks under gas loading to be investigated and has established the precise location of adsorbed gas molecules in a significant number of MOFs. This article reviews progress in such crystallographic studies, which has taken place over the past decade, but has its origins in earlier studies of zeolites, clathrates etc. The review considers studies by single-crystal or powder diffraction using either X-rays or neutrons. Features of MOFs that strongly affect gas sorption behaviour are discussed in the context of in situ crystallographic studies, specifically framework flexibility, and the presence of (organic) functional groups and unsaturated (open) metal sites within pores that can form specific interactions with gas molecules.

Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): synthesis, structure and function

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid network supramolecular solid materials comprised of organized organic linkers and metal cations. They can display enormously high surface areas with tunable pore size and functionality, and can be used as hosts for a range of guest molecules. Since their discovery, MOFs have experienced widespread exploration for their applications in gas storage, drug delivery and sensing. This article covers general and modern synthetic strategies to prepare MOFs, and discusses their structural diversity and properties with respect to application perspectives.

Correlation of Gas Permeability in a Metal-Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr)-Polysulfone Mixed-Matrix Membrane with Free Volume Measurements by Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS)

Hydrothermally stable particles of the metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr) were incorporated into a polysulfone (PSF) matrix to produce mixed-matrix or composite membranes with excellent dispersion of MIL-101 particles and good adhesion within the polymer matrix. Pure gas (O₂, N₂, CO₂ and CH₄) permeation tests showed a significant increase of gas permeabilities of the mixed-matrix membranes without any loss in selectivity. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) indicated that the increased gas permeability is due to the free volume in the PSF polymer and the added large free volume inside the MIL-101 particles. The trend of the gas transport properties of the composite membranes could be reproduced by a Maxwell model.
