Abstract
Tridentate Schiff base complexes of zinc and calcium were prepared and tested in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide to generate biodegradable polymeric materials from biocompatible metals. Alteration of the pendant donor arm attached to the imine backbone provides some control over catalyst composition and polymerization activity. Complexes of the formula [ONN]ZnN(SiMe3)2, where [ONN] = 2-(N-donor arm-imine)[4,6-di(tert-butyl)phenoxide], were isolated with ethyldimethylamine, ethylpiperidine, and ethylmorpholine substituents, while disproportionation led to the isolation of [ONN]2Zn complexes with methylpyridine, quinoline, and ethyldiisopropylamine derivatives, two of which were crystallographically characterized. Calcium complexes were more stable and novel [ONN]CaN(SiMe3)2 complexes with ethylpiperidine and ethyldiisopropylamine substituents were reported. Zinc and calcium catalysts coordinated to a single tridentate ligand were effective at initiating the polymerization of ε-caprolactone, but did not control the polymerizations, whereas the bis(ligand) complexes produced no polymer. These catalysts were effective at controlling the polymerization of rac-lactide. Coordinatively saturated complexes inhibit the polymerization, while initiation from either the amido or ligand alkoxide functionalities produces poly(lactic acid) with low polydispersities.

Abstract
O-benzyl-L-serine carboxyanhydrides were synthesized via diazotization of O-benzyl-L-serine with sodium nitrite in aqueous sulfuric acid solution followed by cyclization of the resulting serine-based α-hydroxy acid with phosgene. Degradable, water-soluble poly(α-hydroxy acids) bearing pendant hydroxyl groups were readily prepared under mild conditions via ring-opening polymerization of O-benzyl-L-serine carboxyanhydrides followed by removal of the benzyl group and showed excellent cell compatibility, suggesting their potential being used as novel materials in constructing drug delivery systems and as hydrogel scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Metalation of 2,4,6-tri(methyl)phenol ((Me)ArOH) and 2,6-di(tert-butyl)-4-methylphenol ((Bu)ArOH) with NaN(SiMe(3))(2) in toluene and in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of the polydentate amines N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) affords three new sodium aryloxide complexes [Na(μ-OAr(Bu))(TMEDA)](2) (3), [Na(μ-OAr(Me))(PMDETA)](2) (4), and [Na(OAr(Bu))(PMDETA)] (5). Complexes 3 to 5 have been isolated as crystalline materials in reasonable yields and characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography and in solution by NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 3 to 5 and the related [tris(2-dimethylaminoethyl)amine] (Me(6)TREN) derivatives [Na(OAr(Me))(HOAr(Me))(Me(6)TREN)] (1) and [Na(OAr(Bu))(Me(6)TREN)] (2), recently prepared in our group, are shown to be active as initiators for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide with benzyl alcohol as a co-initiator. However, during the course of the polymerization reactions intrachain and stereorandom transesterification side-reactions were observed under some of the experimental conditions tested.

Abstract
A series of lithium and sodium complexes with OOO-tridentate bis(phenolate) ligands have been synthesized and fully characterized. The reaction of 2,2'-dihydroxy-3,3',5,5'-tetrakis[(1-methyl-1-phenyl)ethyl]dibenzyl ether (L(1)-H(2)) with different ratios of (n)BuLi in toluene or tetrahydrofuran (THF) gave [Li(2)(L(1)-H)(2)] (1), [Li(4)L(1)(2)] (2), and [Li(2)L(1)(THF)(3)] (3), respectively. Similarly, [Na(L(1)-H)(THF)] (4), [Na(2)(L(1)-H)](2) (5), and [Na(4)L(1)(2)] (6) were prepared by the reaction of L(1)-H(2) and NaN[Si(CH(3))(3)](2) or sodium metal. In addition, the reaction of 2,2'-dihydroxy-3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-butyldibenzyl ether (L(2)-H(2)) with (n)BuLi in toluene or THF yields Li(2)(L(2)-H)(2)] (7) and [Li(2)(L(2)-H)(2)(THF)(2)] (8), respectively. Further treatment of 7 with 2 mol equiv of benzyl alcohol provides [Li(2)(L(2)-H)(2)(BnOH)(2)] (9). Complexes 1-4 and 6-9 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The dinuclear nature of complexes 1 and 3 was confirmed from their molecular structure. Complexes 2 and 6 illustrate tetranuclear species; however, complex 4 shows a mononuclear feature. A p-π interaction exists from the phenyl ring of the 2-(methyl-1-phenylethyl) groups to the central metal in complexes 2, 4, and 6, which could effectively stabilize the metal center. Among them, complexes 1, 2, and 5-9 displayed efficient catalytic behavior for the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide in the presence of benzyl alcohol. Experimental results indicate that among these alkali-metal complexes, the sodium compound 6 displays a rapid catalytic polymerization of L-lactide in "living" fashion, yielding poly(L-lactide) with a controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity indices for a wide range of monomer-to-initiator ratios.

Abstract
This review discusses recent advances of the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers into novel micellar architectures in dilute solutions. The formation of multi-compartment, disk-like, toroidal and bicontinuous micelles and the macromolecular architectures that give rise to these morphologies are reviewed and discussed.
