Abstract
Gold, the archetypal "noble metal", used to be considered of little interest in catalysis. It is now clear that this was a misconception, and a multitude of gold-catalysed transformations has been reported. However, one consequence of the long-held view of gold as inert metal is that its organometallic chemistry contains many "unknowns", and catalytic cycles devised to explain gold's reactivity draw largely on analogies with other transition metals. How realistic are such mechanistic assumptions? In the last few years a number of key compound classes have been discovered that can provide some answers. This Perspective attempts to summarise these developments, with particular emphasis on recently discovered gold(iii) complexes with bonds to hydrogen, oxygen, alkenes and CO ligands.

Abstract
Reactions of the gold(I) triflimide complex [Au(NTf2 )(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)] (1) with the gold(I) hydrocarbyl species [AuR(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)] (2 a-2 c) enable the isolation of hydrocarbyl-bridged cationic digold complexes with the general composition [Au2 (μ-R)(PMe2 Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$)2 ][NTf2 ], where Ar${{^{{\rm Dipp}{_{2}}}}}$=C6 H3 -2,6-(C6 H3 -2,6-iPr2 )2 and R=Me (3), CHCH2 (4), or CCH (5). Compound 3 is the first alkyl-bridged digold complex to be reported and features a symmetric [Au(μ-CH3 )Au](+) core. Complexes 4 and 5 are the first species of their kind that contain simple, unsubstituted vinyl and acetylide units, respectively. In the series of complexes 3-5, the bridging carbon atom systematically changes its hybridization from sp(3) to sp(2) and sp. Concomitant with this change, and owing to variations in the nature of the bonding within the [Au(μ-R)Au](+) unit, there is a gradual decrease in aurophilicity, that is, the strength of the Au⋅⋅⋅Au bonding interaction decreases. This change is illustrated by a monotonic increase in the Au-Au distance by approximately 0.3 Å from R=CH3 (2.71 Å) to CHCH2 (3.07 Å) and CCH (3.31 Å).

Abstract
This work presents the synthesis, characterization and application of eleven new gold (I) complexes 13-23 with 1,2,4-oxadiazole-containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands and of the NHC silver(I) complex 24. The 1,2,4-oxadiazole unit, which can be found in a variety of biologically active natural products such as phidianidines or quisqualic acid, was incorporated, along with a variety of other biologically active moieties (anthracene, indole, 2-pyridine, 2,3,4,5-tetra-O-acetyl-D-glucopyranose, quincorine and quincoridine), in order to change the lipophilicity of the complexes, so that the transport of the active units (M-NHC) though the cell wall barrier is facilitated. The biological activity of the complexes was investigated. In vitro assessment of anti-tumor activity in a panel of 12 human tumor cell lines by a monolayer assay revealed impressive potency (mean IC50 < 0.1 μM) and tumor selectivity for 6 compounds, with individual IC50 values in the low nanomolar range. The solid state structures of compounds 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 24 were determined by X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
We report on the rapid optical detection of gaseous hydrogen using hot electrons generated from resonantly excited substrate-based gold nanohemispheres (Au NHs). We consider hot electron induced H2 dissociation and the subsequent formation of a metastable gold hydride (AuHx) to account for changes in optical transmission. The excitation wavelength was varied to demonstrate a maximum response at the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength of the AuNHs. Numerical simulations, using the discrete dipole approximation, were employed to corroborate the optical changes associated with the formation of metastable AuHx. Finite time difference domain (FDTD) calculations were also performed to account for the enhanced photocatalytic activity arising due to the confinement of electric fields by the Au NHs. FDTD simulations show that the excitation of the Au NHs plasmon modes generates stronger electric fields at the interface in comparison to a spherical geometry of similar dimensions.
