A second-order perturbation theory route to vibrational averages and transition properties of molecules: general formulation and application to infrared and vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopies

Infrared spectroscopic and theoretical study of the HC2n+1O+ (n = 2-5) cations

The carbon chain cations, HC_2n+1O⁺ (n = 2-5), are produced via pulsed laser vaporization of a graphite target in supersonic expansions containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The infrared spectra are measured via mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of the CO "tagged" [HC_2n+1O·CO]⁺ cation complexes in the 1600-3500 cm^-1 region. The geometries and electronic ground states of these cation complexes are determined by their infrared spectra compared to the predications of theoretical calculations. All of the HC_2n+1O⁺ (n = 2-5) core cations are characterized to be linear carbon chain derivatives terminated by hydrogen and oxygen, which have the closed-shell singlet ground states with polyyne-like carbon chain structures.

Effective Inclusion of Mechanical and Electrical Anharmonicity in Excited Electronic States: VPT2-TDDFT Route

We present a reliable and cost-effective procedure for the inclusion of anharmonic effects in excited-state energies and spectroscopic intensities by means of second-order vibrational perturbation theory. This development is made possible thanks to a recent efficient implementation of excited-state analytic Hessians and properties within the time-dependent density functional theory framework. As illustrated in this work, by taking advantage of such algorithmic developments, it is possible to perform calculations of excited-state infrared spectra of medium-large isolated molecular systems, with anharmonicity effects included in both the energy and property surfaces. We also explore the use of this procedure for the inclusion of anharmonic effects in the simulation of vibronic bandshapes of electronic spectra and compare the results with previous, more approximate models.

Cooperativity in Alcohol-Nitrogen Complexes: Understanding Cryomatrices through Slit Jet Expansions

FTIR spectroscopy of supersonic expansions is used to characterize alcohol dimers with one, two, and several nitrogen molecules attached to them. The nitrogen coating causes progressive spectral downshifts of the OH stretching fundamentals which are related to and explain matrix isolation shifts. Comparison of methanol, tert-butyl alcohol and ethanol as well as deuteration of methanol assist in the assignment. Alcohol monomers and trimers are significantly more resistant to nitrogen coating due to a lack of cooperativity and dangling bonds, respectively. In the case of ethanol, the role of conformational isomerism and combination bands is further elucidated. The experimental findings help rationalize the anomalously small OH stretching dimerization shift of methanol in the gas phase, in comparison to that of tert-butyl alcohol.

Accurate Vibrational-Rotational Parameters and Infrared Intensities of 1-Bromo-1-fluoroethene: A Joint Experimental Analysis and Ab Initio Study

The medium-resolution gas-phase infrared (IR) spectra of 1-bromo-1-fluoroethene (BrFC═CH₂, 1,1-C₂H₂BrF) were investigated in the range 300-6500 cm^-1, and the vibrational analysis led to the assignment of all fundamentals as well as many overtone and combination bands up to three quanta, thus giving an accurate description of its vibrational structure. Integrated band intensity data were determined with high precision from the measurements of their corresponding absorption cross sections. The vibrational analysis was supported by high-level ab initio investigations. CCSD(T) computations accounting for extrapolation to the complete basis set and core correlation effects were employed to accurately determine the molecular structure and harmonic force field. The latter was then coupled to B2PLYP and MP2 computations in order to account for mechanical and electrical anharmonicities. Second-order perturbative vibrational theory was then applied to the thus obtained hybrid force fields to support the experimental assignment of the IR spectra.

On the relation between carbonyl stretching frequencies and the donor power of chelating diphosphines in nickel dicarbonyl complexes

The relation between spectroscopic observables and the detailed metal-ligand bonding features in chelation complexes is addressed using both experimental and state-of-the-art theoretical and computational methods. We synthesized and characterized a set of six nickel dicarbonyl complexes of general formula [Ni(CO)2(PP)], where PP is an atropoisomeric chelating diphosphine ligand. The analysis of the obtained experimental data and the basicity and oxidative potentials of the free ligands suggests a close relation between the donor ability of the chelating ligand and the carbonyl stretching frequencies observed in the complexes. We then use theory to unravel the detailed mechanisms of chelation-bond formation in terms of partial charge flows between the molecular orbitals of the fragments. By extending the promising, recently published natural orbitals for chemical valence/charge displacement (NOCV/CD) analysis scheme we provide a thorough, quantitative description of the several charge fluxes following the metal-ligand bond formation and demonstrate that the carbonyl stretching frequencies in the considered complexes selectively respond to the σ-donation charge flow from the phosphorus lone pairs of the ligands, with the frequency shift being in quantitative correlation with the extent of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer.

Computational Kinetics by Variational Transition-State Theory with Semiclassical Multidimensional Tunneling: Direct Dynamics Rate Constants for the Abstraction of H from CH3OH by Triplet Oxygen Atoms

Rate constants and the product branching ratio for hydrogen abstraction from CH3OH by O(3P) were computed with multistructural variational transition-state theory including microcanonically optimized multidimensional tunneling. Benchmark calculations of the forward and reverse classical barrier heights and the reaction energetics have been carried out by using coupled cluster theory and multireference calculations to select the most reliable density functional method for direct dynamics computations of the rate constants. The dynamics calculations included the anharmonicity of the zero-point energies and partition functions, with specific-reaction-parameter scaling factors for reactants and transition states, and multistructural torsional anharmonicity was included for the torsion around the C-O bond in methanol and in the transition states. The resulting rate constants are presented over a wider range than they are available from experiment, but in the temperature range where experiments are available, they agree well with experimental values, which is encouraging for their reliability over the wider temperature range and for future computations of oxygen atom reaction rates. In contrast to a previous computational prediction, the branching ratio predicted by the present work shows that the formation of CH2OH + OH is the dominant channel over the whole range of temperature from 250 to 2000 K.

Electrical anharmonicity in hydrogen bonded systems: complete interpretation of the IR spectra of the Cl-H[combining right harpoon above] stretching band in the gaseous (CH3)2OHCl complex

Following the previous developments to simulate the fully infrared spectra of weak hydrogen bond systems within the linear response theory, an extension of the adiabatic model is presented here. A general formulation including the electrical anharmonicities in the calculation of the damped autocorrelation function of weak H-bonds is adopted to facilitate the support of the additional properties, and thus the IR spectra of the Cl-H[combining right harpoon above] stretching band in the gaseous (CH₃)₂OHCl complex. We have explored the origins of the broadening of the Cl-H[combining right harpoon above] stretching band. We found that the main features of the lineshape are attributed to electrical anharmonicity as a consequence of the large mixed second derivatives of the dipole moment with respect to the Cl-H[combining right harpoon above] bond and of the intermonomer elongations . In addition to providing more accurate theoretical band shapes, inclusion of the electrical anharmonicity in the present model paves the way for a more complete interpretation by generating three new Franck-Condon superposed distributions.

The gas-phase vibrational spectroscopy of cold C_2n N^- (n=2-4) anions is investigated in the CC and CN multiple bond stretching region (1700-2250 cm^-1 ) by means of infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy in a cryogenically cooled ion trap of the corresponding messenger-tagged complexes. The IRPD spectra are assigned to N-terminated linear structures with triplet ground states (³ Σ^- ) based on a comparison with harmonic vibrational frequencies and intensities from density functional theory computations. In contrast to the polyacetylenic C_2n+1 N^- anions, the linear C-C chains investigated here exhibit cumulenic character, which is most pronounced in C₄ N^- and decreases with chain length. Additional intense transitions are observed for C₆ N^- above 3000 cm^-1 and are attributed to overtone and combination bands involving the CC stretching modes, based on anharmonic computations. The influence of a D₂ tag on the vibrational features of C_2n N^- anions is shown to be small.

Infrared spectra of ovalene (C32H14) and hydrogenated ovalene (C32H15˙) in solid para-hydrogen

We report the infrared (IR) spectra of ovalene (C₃₂H₁₄) and hydrogenated ovalene (C₃₂H₁₅˙) in solid para-hydrogen (p-H₂). The hydrogenated ovalene and protonated ovalene were generated from electron bombardment of a mixture of ovalene and p-H₂ during deposition of a matrix at 3.2 K. The features that decreased with time have been previously assigned to 7-C₃₂H₁₅⁺, the most stable isomer of protonated ovalene (Astrophys. J., 2016, 825, 96). The spectral features that increased with time are assigned to the most stable isomer of hydrogenated ovalene (7-C₃₂H₁₅˙) based on the expected chemistry and on a comparison with the vibrational wavenumbers and IR intensities predicted by the B3PW91/6-311++G(2d,2p) method. The mechanism of formation of 7-C₃₂H₁₅˙ is discussed according to the observed changes in intensity and calculated energetics of possible reactions of H + C₃₂H₁₄ and isomerization of C₃₂H₁₅˙. The formation of 7-C₃₂H₁₅˙ is dominated by the reaction H + C₃₂H₁₄ → 7-C₃₂H₁₅˙, implying that, regardless of the presence of a barrier, the hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons occurs even at 3.2 K.

Effective Fully Polarizable QM/MM Approach To Model Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra of Systems in Aqueous Solution

We propose a methodology, based on the combination of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations with a fully polarizable Quantum Mechanical (QM)/Molecular Mechanics (MM)/Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) Hamiltonian, to calculate Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) spectra of chiral systems in aqueous solution. Polarization effects are included in the MM force field by exploiting an approach based on Fluctuating Charges (FQ). By performing the MD, the description of the solvating environment is enriched by taking into account the dynamical aspects of the solute-solvent interactions. On the other hand, the QM/FQ/PCM calculation of the VCD spectrum ensures an accurate description of the electronic density of the solute and a proper account for the specific interactions in solution. The application of our approach to (R)-methyloxirane and (l)-alanine in aqueous solution gives calculated spectra in remarkable agreement with their experimental counterparts and a substantial improvement with respect to the same spectra calculated with the PCM.

(13)C or Not (13)C: Selective Synthesis of Asymmetric Carbon-13-Labeled Platinum(II) cis-Acetylides

Asymmetric isotopic labeling of parallel and identical electron- or energy-transfer pathways in symmetrical molecular assemblies is an extremely challenging task owing to the inherent lack of isotopic selectivity in conventional synthetic methods. Yet, it would be a highly valuable tool in the study and control of complex light-matter interactions in molecular systems by exclusively and nonintrusively labeling one of otherwise identical reaction pathways, potentially directing charge and energy transport along a chosen path. Here we describe the first selective synthetic route to asymmetrically labeled organometallic compounds, on the example of charge-transfer platinum(II) cis-acetylide complexes. We demonstrate the selective (13)C labeling of one of two acetylide groups. We further show that such isotopic labeling successfully decouples the two ν(C≡C) in the mid-IR region, permitting independent spectroscopic monitoring of two otherwise identical electron-transfer pathways, along the (12)C≡(12)C and (13)C≡(13)C coordinates. Quantum-mechanical mixing leads to intriguing complex features in the vibrational spectra of such species, which we successfully model by full-dimensional anharmonically corrected DFT calculations, despite the large size of these systems. The synthetic route developed and demonstrated herein should lead to a great diversity of asymmetric organometallic complexes inaccessible otherwise, opening up a plethora of opportunities to advance the fundamental understanding and control of light-matter interactions in molecular systems.

IR spectrum of the protonated neurotransmitter 2-phenylethylamine: dispersion and anharmonicity of the NH3(+)-π interaction

The structure and dynamics of the highly flexible side chain of (protonated) phenylethylamino neurotransmitters are essential for their function. The geometric, vibrational, and energetic properties of the protonated neutrotransmitter 2-phenylethylamine (H(+)PEA) are characterized in the N-H stretch range by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy of cold ions using rare gas tagging (Rg = Ne and Ar) and anharmonic calculations at the B3LYP-D3/(aug-)cc-pVTZ level including dispersion corrections. A single folded gauche conformer (G) protonated at the basic amino group and stabilized by an intramolecular NH(+)-π interaction is observed. The dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations reveal the important effects of dispersion on the cation-π interaction and the large vibrational anharmonicity of the NH3(+) group involved in the NH(+)-π hydrogen bond. They allow for assigning overtone and combination bands and explain anomalous intensities observed in previous IR multiple-photon dissociation spectra. Comparison with neutral PEA reveals the large effects of protonation on the geometric and electronic structure.

Simulation of Vacuum UV Absorption and Electronic Circular Dichroism Spectra of Methyl Oxirane: The Role of Vibrational Effects

Vibrationally resolved one-photon absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra of (R)-methyl oxirane were calculated with different electronic and vibronic models selecting, through an analysis of the convergence of the results, the best compromise between reliability and computational cost. Linear-response TD-DFT/CAM-B3LYP/SNST electronic computations in conjunction with the simple vertical gradient vibronic model were chosen and employed for systematic comparison with the available experimental data. Remarkable agreement between simulated and experimental spectra was achieved for both one-photon absorption and circular dichroism concerning peak positions, relative intensities, and general spectral shapes considering the computational efficiency of the chosen theoretical approach. The significant improvement of the results with respect to smearing of vertical electronic transitions by phenomenological Gaussian functions and the possible inclusion of solvent effects by polarizable continuum models at a negligible additional cost paves the route toward the simulation and analysis of spectral shapes of complex molecular systems in their natural environment.

Reliable vibrational wavenumbers for C=O and N-H stretchings of isolated and hydrogen-bonded nucleic acid bases

The accurate prediction of vibrational wavenumbers for functional groups involved in hydrogen-bonded bridges remains an important challenge for computational spectroscopy. For the specific case of the C=O and N-H stretching modes of nucleobases and their oligomers, the paucity of experimental reference values needs to be compensated by reliable computational data, which require the use of approaches going beyond the standard harmonic oscillator model. Test computations performed for model systems (formamide, acetamide and their cyclic homodimers) in the framework of the second order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) confirmed that anharmonic corrections can be safely computed by global hybrid (GHF) or double hybrid (DHF) functionals, whereas the harmonic part is particularly challenging. As a matter of fact, GHFs perform quite poorly and even DHFs, while fully satisfactory for C=O stretchings, face unexpected difficulties when dealing with N-H stretchings. On these grounds, a linear regression for N-H stretchings has been obtained and validated for the heterodimers formed by 4-aminopyrimidine with 6-methyl-4-pyrimidinone (4APM-M4PMN) and by uracil with water. In view of the good performance of this computational model, we have built a training set of B2PLYP-D3/maug-cc-pVTZ harmonic wavenumbers (including linear regression scaling for N-H) for six-different uracil dimers and a validation set including 4APM-M4PMN, one of the most stable hydrogen-bonded adenine homodimers, as well as the adenine-uracil, adenine-thymine, guanine-cytosine and adenine-4-thiouracil heterodimers. Because of the unfavourable scaling of DHF harmonic wavenumbers with the dimensions of the investigated systems, we have optimized a linear regression of B3LYP-D3/N07D harmonic wavenumbers for the training set, which has been next checked against the validation set. This relatively cheap model, which shows very good agreement with experimental data (average errors of about 10 cm(-1)), paves the route toward a reliable analysis of spectroscopic signatures for larger polynucleotides.

The Virtual Multifrequency Spectrometer: a new paradigm for spectroscopy

On going developments of hardware and software are changing computational spectroscopy from a strongly specialized research area to a general tool in the inventory of most researchers. Increased interactions between experimentally-oriented users and theoretically-oriented developers of new methods and models would result in more robust, flexible and reliable tools and studies for the systems of increasing complexity, which are of current scientific and technological interest. This is the philosophy behind this review, which presents the development of a so-called virtual multi-frequency spectrometer (VMS) including state-of-the-art approaches in a user-friendly frame. The current status of the VMS tool will be illustrated by a number of case studies with special reference to infrared and UV-vis regions of the electro-magnetic spectrum including also chiral spectroscopies. Only the basic theoretical background will be provided avoiding explicit equations as far as possible, and pointing out the most recent advancements beyond the standard rigid-rotor harmonic-oscillator model coupled to vertical electronic excitation energies.

Analytic calculations of anharmonic infrared and Raman vibrational spectra

Using a recently developed recursive scheme for the calculation of high-order geometric derivatives of frequency-dependent molecular properties [Ringholm et al., J. Comp. Chem., 2014, 35, 622], we present the first analytic calculations of anharmonic infrared (IR) and Raman spectra including anharmonicity both in the vibrational frequencies and in the IR and Raman intensities. In the case of anharmonic corrections to the Raman intensities, this involves the calculation of fifth-order energy derivatives-that is, the third-order geometric derivatives of the frequency-dependent polarizability. The approach is applicable to both Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Using generalized vibrational perturbation theory to second order, we have calculated the anharmonic infrared and Raman spectra of the non- and partially deuterated isotopomers of nitromethane, where the inclusion of anharmonic effects introduces combination and overtone bands that are observed in the experimental spectra. For the major features of the spectra, the inclusion of anharmonicities in the calculation of the vibrational frequencies is more important than anharmonic effects in the calculated infrared and Raman intensities. Using methanimine as a trial system, we demonstrate that the analytic approach avoids errors in the calculated spectra that may arise if numerical differentiation schemes are used.

A spectroscopic and theoretical study in the near-infrared region of low concentration aliphatic alcohols

The near-infrared (NIR) spectra of low-concentration (5 × 10⁻³ M) solutions in CCl₄ of basic aliphatic alcohols, methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol were, for the first time, calculated by second-order vibrational perturbation theory computations and were compared with the corresponding experimental data.

Anharmonic Effects on Vibrational Spectra Intensities: Infrared, Raman, Vibrational Circular Dichroism, and Raman Optical Activity

The aim of this paper is 2-fold. First, we want to report the extension of our virtual multifrequency spectrometer (VMS) to anharmonic intensities for Raman optical activity (ROA) with the full inclusion of first- and second-order resonances for both frequencies and intensities in the framework of the generalized second-order vibrational perturbation theory (GVPT2) for all kinds of vibrational spectroscopies. Then, from a more general point of view, we want to present and validate the performance of VMS for the parallel analysis of different vibrational spectra for medium-sized molecules (IR, Raman, VCD, ROA) including both mechanical and electric/magnetic anharmonicity. For the well-known methyloxirane benchmark, careful selection of density functional, basis set, and resonance thresholds permitted us to reach qualitative and quantitative agreement between experimental and computed band positions and shapes. Next, the whole series of halogenated azetidinones is analyzed, showing that it is now possible to interpret different spectra in terms of mass, electronegativity, polarizability, and hindrance variation between closely related substituents, chiral spectroscopies being particular effective in this connection.

Virtual eyes for technology and cultural heritage: toward computational strategy for new and old indigo-based dyes

A cost-effective, robust, and reliable computational strategy is applied to simulate peak positions and band-shapes of UV-vis spectra together with the dye colours perceived by human eyes. The features of our virtual multifrequency spectrometer (VMS) relevant to this topic are sketched with special focus on the selection of density functional, vibronic model, and solvent description. Furthermore, the new VMS-Draw graphical user interface (GUI) is employed for user-friendly pre- and post-processing of the computed data. The family of indigo dyes is used as case study in view of their continued use in the field of cultural heritage, together with new promising applications for photonics and sustainable energy. After assessment of different simplified models employed in previous studies, the role of several substituents and of dimerization in tuning the colour and spectral features are analyzed in detail by means of both accurate computations and interpretative models. The results are in remarkable agreement with experiment and allow to rationalize the behaviour of this class of dyes.

Reaction of Laser-Ablated Uranium and Thorium Atoms with H2Se: A Rare Example of Selenium Multiple Bonding

The compounds H2ThSe and H2USe were synthesized by the reaction of laser-ablated actinide metal atoms with H2Se under cryogenic conditions following the procedures used to synthesize H2AnX (An = Th, U; X = O, S). The molecules were characterized by infrared spectra in an argon matrix with the aid of deuterium substitution and electronic structure calculations at the density functional theory level. The main products, H2ThSe and H2USe, are shown to have a highly polarized actinide-selenium triple bond, as found for H2AnS on the basis of electronic structure calculations. There is an even larger back-bonding of the Se with the An than found for the corresponding sulfur compounds. These molecules are of special interest as rare examples of multiple bonding of selenium to a metal, particularly an actinide metal.
