Abstract
The synthesis of polyethylene-graft-polystyrene copolymers by a multistep "grafting from" approach is described. In the first step, a bromo-functional polyethylene (PE-Br) was synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cis-cyclooctene (COE) and quantitative hydrobromination. Subsequent irradiation of PE-Br under visible light in the presence of dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn2(CO)10) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) resulted in the formation of TEMPO-substituted polyethylene (PE-TEMPO). Polystyrene (PS) chains were then grown via nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) from the PE-TEMPO precursor to give desired PE-g-PS copolymers in a controlled manner. The intermediates at each step and final graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, GPC, and DSC analyses.

Abstract
Varying molecular weight distributions (MWDs) have the potential to precisely tune polymer properties, but this approach remains relatively unexplored owing to a lack of synthetic methods that provide control over the exact makeup of a distribution. Herein, we report a simple and highly efficient strategy for addressing this challenge through temporal regulation of initiation in the anionic polymerization of styrene. This method yields unprecedented control over the shape of the polymer MWD and facilitates the synthesis of diblock copolymers with controlled MWD compositions. Importantly, we show that the MWD symmetry has a marked influence on the stiffness of poly(styrene-block-isoprene) copolymers, which demonstrates that varying MWD shape is an effective method for altering polymer properties.

Abstract
In the field of nanomedicine, the global trend over the past few years has been toward the design of highly sophisticated drug delivery systems with active targeting and/or imaging capabilities, as well as responsiveness to various stimuli to increase their therapeutic efficacy. However, providing sophistication generally increases complexity that could be detrimental in regards to potential pharmaceutical development. An emerging concept to design efficient yet simple drug delivery systems, termed the "drug-initiated" method, consists of growing short polymer chains from drugs in a controlled fashion to yield well-defined drug-polymer prodrugs. These materials are obtained in a reduced amount of synthetic steps and can be self-assembled into polymer prodrug nanoparticles, be incorporated into lipid nanocarriers or be used as water-soluble polymer prodrugs. This Perspective article will capture the recent achievements from the "drug-initiated" method and highlight the great biomedical potential of these materials.

Abstract
The application of alkoxyamines as initiators/controllers in nitroxide mediated polymerization and as agents for theranostics requires the development of switchable (from stable one to labile one) alkoxyamines. One way to achieve this is to tune the polarity of various groups carried by either the alkyl fragment or the nitroxyl fragment. Thus, the effect of protonation/deprotonation of the para-functionalized aryl moiety carried by the alkyl fragment in diethyl(2,2-dimethyl-1-((1,1-dimethylethyl)(1-para-subsitutedphenylethoxy)amino)propyl)phosphonate is investigated. An increase in kd is observed with increasing localized electrical effect, i.e., in the presence of electron withdrawing groups at the para position of the phenyl ring. A striking effect of the intimate ion pair on kd is also observed.

Abstract
A few years ago, Bagryanskaya and colleagues (J. Org. Chem. 2011) showed that protonation of the nitroxyl fragment deactivated the alkoxyamine C-ON bond. Conversely, our group showed that protonation (Chem. Commun. 2011), as well as other chemical reactions such as oxidation or amine quaternization (Org. Lett. 2012), of the pyridyl moiety carried by the alkyl fragment was suitable to activate the homolysis of the C-ON bond. To pursue our goal of applying alkoxyamines as theranostic agents (Org. Biomol. Chem. 2014 and Mol. Pharmaceutics 2014) by activation of the C-ON bond homolysis, we turned our interest to the chemical activation of the nitroxyl fragment by oxidation/reduction of selected functions. Conversion of a hydroxyl group located close to the nitroxyl moiety successively into aldehyde, then acid, and eventually into ester, led to a successive decrease in kd.

Abstract
Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is an important polymerization process in polymer synthesis. However, a typical ATRP system has some drawbacks. For example, it needs a large amount of transition metal catalyst, and it is difficult or expensive to remove the metal catalyst residue in products. In order to reduce the amount of catalyst and considering good biocompatibility and low toxicity of the iron catalyst, in this work, we developed a homogeneous polymerization system of initiators for continuous activator regeneration ATRP (ICAR ATRP) with just a ppm level of iron catalyst. Herein, we used oil-soluble iron (III) acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)₃) as the organometallic catalyst, 1,1'-azobis (cyclohexanecarbonitrile) (ACHN) with longer half-life period as the thermal initiator, ethyl 2-bromophenylacetate (EBPA) as the initiator, triphenylphosphine (PPh₃) as the ligand, toluene as the solvent and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the model monomer. The factors related with the polymerization system, such as concentration of Fe(acac)₃ and ACHN and polymerization kinetics, were investigated in detail at 90 °C. It was found that a polymer with an acceptable molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.43 at 45.9% of monomer conversion) could be obtained even with 1 ppm of Fe(acac)₃, making it needless to remove the residual metal in the resultant polymers, which makes such an ICAR ATRP process much more industrially attractive. The "living" features of this polymerization system were further confirmed by chain-extension experiment.

Abstract
We report the first synthesis of a gradient methylidene-ethylidene copolymer via a living C1 polymerization. The copolymer has a similar chemical structure as the corresponding ethylene-propylene copolymer. To achieve this goal a new and convenient source of the ethylide monomer, diethylsulfoxonium ethylide, was developed for the introduction of the methyl branch in the polymer backbone. The gradient copolymer contains a gradual change of instantaneous methyl branch content from 0% on one end of the polymer chain to 63% on the other end. Thermal analysis revealed that the gradient copolymers have a narrow glass transition temperature range with values intermediate between those of linear polyethylene and atactic polypropylene.

Abstract
Alkoxyamines--per-alkylated derivatives of hydroxylamine R(1)R(2)NO-R(3)--can undergo C-ON bond homolysis to release a persistent nitroxyl radical R(1)R(2)NO˙ and a transient alkyl radical R(3)˙. Although they were considered as an oddity when discovered in 1974, their properties have been extensively studied since the seminal work of Solomon, Rizzardo and Cacioli (Chem. Abstr., 102, 221335q), who patented the key role of alkoxyamines in nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) in 1985. This feature article surveys and assesses the various applications of alkoxyamines: in tin-free radical chemistry, e.g., for the elaboration of carbo- or hetero-cycles, for the development of new reactions, for total synthesis of natural products; in polymerization under thermal conditions (NMP) or photochemical conditions (nitroxide-mediated photo-polymerization, NMP2); and in the design of smart materials. In this feature article, we also describe our recent findings concerning the chemical triggering of the C-ON bond homolysis in alkoxyamines, affording the controlled generation of alkyl radicals at room temperature. Based on these results, we describe herein some new opportunities for applications in the field of smart materials, and of course, some possible developments as new initiators for NMP as well as an entirely new field of application: the use of alkoxyamines as theranostic agents. Indeed, each of the radicals released after homolysis can play an appealing role: the nitroxide, through dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), can be used for imagery purposes (diagnostic properties), while the alkyl radical can be used to induce cellular disorders in abnormal cells (therapeutic activity).

Abstract
A novel method for the preparation of functionalized alternating copolymers is presented. Nitroxide-mediated polymerization of hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate with 7-octenyl vinyl ether provides the corresponding alternating polymer, which can be chemically modified using two orthogonal polymer-analogous reactions. A thiol-ene click reaction followed by amidation provides dual-functionalized alternating copolymers. The potential of this method is illustrated by the preparation of a small library (15 examples) of functionalized alternating copolymers.

Abstract
Elemental silver was used as a reducing agent in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylates. Silver wire, in conjunction with a CuBr(2)/TPMA catalyst, enabled the controlled, rapid preparation of polyacrylates with dispersity values down to Đ = 1.03. The silver wire in these reactions was reused several times in sequential reactions without a decline in performance, and the amount of copper catalyst used was reduced to 10 ppm without a large decrease in control. A poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) diblock copolymer was synthesized with a molecular weight of 91 400 and Đ = 1.04, demonstrating good retention of chain-end functionality and a high degree of livingness in this ATRP system.
