Abstract
We compare the performance of the Wu and Cohen (WC, 2006 Phys. Rev. B 73 235116) and of the PBEsol (2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 136406) exchange and correlation functionals on the phonon dispersions of face-centered cubic metals copper, silver, gold, nickel, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and iridium. The WC and the PBEsol frequencies are found to be close to each other and intermediate between the local density approximation (LDA) and the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) result (1996 Phys. Rev. Lett. 77 3865). In copper, silver, palladium, platinum, and rhodium, the WC and PBEsol frequencies match the experimental inelastic neutron scattering data better than the LDA or PBE. In nickel, gold, and iridium, PBE (for nickel) or LDA (for gold and iridium) remain the best functionals among these four possibilities.

Abstract
Consistent basis sets of triple-zeta valence with polarization quality for main group elements and transition metals from row one to three have been derived for periodic quantum-chemical solid-state calculations with the crystalline-orbital program CRYSTAL. They are based on the def2-TZVP basis sets developed for molecules by the Ahlrichs group. Orbital exponents and contraction coefficients have been modified and reoptimized, to provide robust and stable self-consistant field (SCF) convergence for a wide range of different compounds. We compare results on crystal structures, cohesive energies, and solid-state reaction enthalpies with the modified basis sets, denoted as pob-TZVP, with selected standard basis sets available from the CRYSTAL basis set database. The average deviation of calculated lattice parameters obtained with a selected density functional, the hybrid method PW1PW, from experimental reference is smaller with pob-TZVP than with standard basis sets, in particular for metallic systems. The effects of basis set expansion by diffuse and polarization functions were investigated for selected systems.

Abstract
Surface phonons, conductivities, and loss functions are calculated for reconstructed (2×1), p(2×2) and c(4×2) clean Si(001) surfaces, and (2×1) H and D covered Si(001) surfaces. Surface conductivities perpendicular to the surface are significantly smaller than conductivities parallel to the surface. The surface loss function is compared to high resolution electron energy loss measurements. There is good agreement between calculated loss functions and experiment for H and D covered surfaces. However, agreement between experimental data from different groups and between theory and experiment is poor for clean Si(001) surfaces. Formalisms for calculating electron energy loss spectra are reviewed and the mechanism of electron energy losses to surface vibrations is discussed.

Abstract
Acetylacetone (acacH) adsorption on ZnO (10-10) surface has been studied by a theoretical periodic approach using density functional theory. Two dissociative adsorption modes were investigated and compared to the most stable adsorption mode of formic acid. Acetylacetone appears as a suitable anchoring group for hybrid materials, with adsorption energies of the same order of magnitude as formic acid. IR spectra of the acac/ZnO systems were computed in order to determine the spectral signature of adsorption and, possibly, of each adsorption mode to follow the coordination of acac on ZnO at the experimental level. The results have been compared to Fourier transform infrared (attenuated total reflection-IR) experimental spectra. The present investigation points out the interest of acetylacetone as an anchoring group for the development of new ZnO-based functionalized hybrid layers for corrosion protection, light emitting diodes, photocatalytic systems, and dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract
H2O adsorption on hexagonal hydroxyapatite (001) and (010) stoichiometric surfaces has been studied at B3LYP level with a localized Gaussian basis set of polarized double-zeta quality using the periodic CRYSTAL06 code. Because four Ca2+ cations are available at both surfaces, the considered H2O coverages span the 1/4<or=theta<or=5/4 range. The affinity of both HA surfaces for H2O is large: on the (001) surface, H2O adsorbs molecularly (binding energies BE approximately 80 kJ mol(-1) per adsorbed molecule), whereas it dissociates on the (010) surface, giving rise to new surface terminations (CaOwHw and POHw). The highly negative reaction energy for H2O dissociation (between -250 and -320 kJ mol(-1) per adsorbed H2O molecule) strongly suggests that the pristine (010) surface "as cut" from the hydroxyapatite bulk cannot survive in aqueous environment. Conversely, on the reacted surface, H2O adsorbs molecularly with BE similar to those computed for the (001) surface. The B3LYP BEs have been contrasted to the experimental water adsorption enthalpies measured by microcalorimetry on polycrystalline hydroxyapatite samples, showing a fairly good agreement and supporting the suggestion that H2O vapor adsorbs on the already reacted (010) crystalline faces. Harmonic B3LYP vibrational features of adsorbed H2O show, when compared to modes of the gas-phase H2O, a hypsochromic shift of the HOH bending mode (Deltadelta(HOH)=49 cm(-1)) and a bathochromic shift of the OH stretching modes larger than 1700 cm(-1) (Deltanu(OH)=427 cm(-1)), which are both in good agreement with literature experimental data.

Abstract
We employ periodic density functional theory calculations to compare the structural chemistry of silicon chalcogenides (silica, silicon sulfide) and anhydrous tetrahedral halides (beryllium fluoride, beryllium chloride). Despite the different formal oxidation states of the elements involved, the divalent halides are known experimentally to form crystal structures similar to known SiX2 frameworks; the rich polymorphic chemistry of SiO2 is however not matched by divalent halides, for which a very limited number of polymorphs are currently known. The calculated energy landscapes yield a quantitative match between the relative polymorphic stability in the SiO2/BeF2 pair, and a semiquantitative match for the SiS2/BeCl2 pair. The experimentally observed polymorphs are found to lie lowest in energy for each composition studied. For the two BeX2 compounds studied, polymorphs not yet synthesized are predicted to lie very low in energy, either slightly above or even in between the energy of the experimentally observed polymorphs. The experimental lack of polymorphism for tetrahedral halide materials thus does not appear to stem from a lack of low-energy polymorphs but more likely is the result of a lack of experimental exploration. Our calculations further indicate that the rich polymorphic chemistry of SiO2 can be potentially matched, if not extended, by BeF2, provided that milder synthetic conditions similar to those employed in zeolite synthesis are developed for BeF2. Finally, our work demonstrates that both classes of materials show the same behavior upon replacement of the 2p anion with the heavier 3p anion from the same group; the thermodynamic preference shifts from structures with large rings to structures with larger fractions of small two and three membered rings.

Abstract
As-made and calcined ITQ-12 zeolites are structurally characterized by means of the analysis of their vibrational modes. The experimental IR spectra made on high crystalline samples are compared with accurate B3LYP periodic calculations performed with the CRYSTAL06 code. The fair agreement between both sets of data allows us to make a reliable assignment of the IR modes. Thanks to the detailed information provided by the theoretical calculations, the analysis of the IR intensities, the Born dynamic charges, and the whole set of vibrational frequencies at Gamma-point shed light on several aspects of the host-guest interaction, structure-direction issues, including the role of fluoride anions in allowing the crystallization of silica structures with strained double-four rings, and the role played by the framework flexibility.

Abstract
The vibrational modes of three solid AlF3 phases (alpha, beta, and amorphous high surface area AlF3) are investigated. Calculations have been performed using hybrid exchange correlation functionals to determine the equilibrium geometries and Gamma-point phonon frequencies for the alpha-AlF3 and beta-AlF3 phases. The calculated optical modes are in excellent agreement with experiment. The IR absorption of the amorphous, glasslike high surface area (HS)-AlF3 is also discussed. Deconvolution of the broad envelope of IR stretches and bending vibrations identifies the components of the observed broad band. From the IR vibrational spectrum it has been shown that both short-range and medium-range disorder are present within HS-AlF3. Structural phase transitions are identified by their phase transition temperature Tc, measured by thermal analysis.

Abstract
The full vibrational spectra of alpha and beta crystalline phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS), that is, phases presenting the trans-planar conformation, have been experimentally determined and compared with that calculated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory for an infinite trans-planar chain. The normal vibrational analysis of most representative modes of the periodic model allowed us to give a general description of each one, which was further confirmed by the direct inspection of mode animations. An assignment of the different modes was performed in terms of frequency, relative intensity, and direction of the transition-moment vector of the observed IR peaks as well as Raman vibrational frequencies.

Abstract
The structure and surface energies of the cleaved, reconstructed, and fully hydroxylated (001) alpha-quartz surface of various thicknesses are investigated with periodic density functional theory (DFT). The properties of the cleaved and hydroxylated surface are reproduced with a slab thickness of 18 atomic layers, while a thicker 27-layer slab is necessary for the reconstructed surface. The performance of the hybrid DFT functional B3LYP, using an atomic basis set, is compared with the generalised gradient approximation, PBE, employing plane waves. Both methodologies give similar structures and surface energies for the cleaved and reconstructed surfaces, which validates studying these surfaces with hybrid DFT. However, there is a slight difference between the PBE and B3LYP approach for the geometry of the hydrogen bonded network on the hydroxylated surface. The PBE adsorption energy of CO on a surface silanol site is in good agreement with experimental values, suggesting that this method is more accurate for hydrogen bonded structures than B3LYP. New hybrid functionals, however, yield improved weak interactions. Since these functionals also give superior activation energies, we recommend applying the new functionals to contemporary issues involving the silica surface and adsorbates on this surface.

Abstract
Structural and vibrational features of hexagonal hydroxyapatite HA [Ca(10)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2), space group P6(3)] are computed ab initio within a periodic approach using the CRYSTAL03 program and the B3LYP hybrid functional with a Gaussian-type basis set of polarized double zeta quality. Experimental lattice parameters and internal coordinates have been fully optimized and the final structure characterized by means of its band structure, density of states and Mulliken analysis. The full B3LYP harmonic vibrational spectrum of HA at Gamma point has also been computed and compares well with the available experimental IR and Raman data. Nevertheless, the presence of one negative frequency in the computed spectrum shows that, within the hexagonal symmetry imposed by the P6(3) group, the structure is a saddle point. This is at variance with the monoclinic structure (under P2(1)/b space group), which has been computed, with the same approach, to be a minimum of 17 kJ mol(-1) (per unit cell) more stable than the corresponding hexagonal HA structure.
