Abstract
AIM To investigate the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) following retinal artery occlusion (RAO). METHODS The study cohort included all patients diagnosed with RAO between January 1999 and December 2008 (n=688) in the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. The control group included randomly selected patients (n=4128) from the same database that were matched to the study group, using a propensity score, for age, gender, and comorbid diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, chronic renal disease and atrial fibrillation status. The ACS-free survival rate was calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to obtain the adjusted HR for ACS after adjustment for potential confounding factors. The incidence and risk of ACS were compared between the RAO and control groups. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients in the RAO group (5.38%) and 138 controls (3.34%) had ACS (p=0.0063) during the follow-up period, resulting in a significantly higher risk of ACS in the RAO group (HR=1.67, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.40). After adjustment for potential confounders, the HR for developing ACS in the RAO group was 1.72 (95% CI 1.20 to 2.47) times higher than that of controls. When stratified by RAO type, the adjusted HR for ACS was 3.57 (95% CI 2.09 to 6.10) for the central RAO subgroup. CONCLUSIONS We found that RAO increased the risk for ACS. We recommend thorough follow-up cardiovascular examinations and medical prevention for ACS in patients following RAO.

Abstract
Central retinal artery occlusion, although relatively rare, is an ophthalmological emergency. If left untreated, complete blindness will ensue. Conventional therapies have not significantly improved outcomes compared with the natural history of the disease. Several case series of more recent endovascular approaches, such as intraarterial fibrinolysis, report successful outcomes. Still other studies regarding intraarterial fibrinolysis do not demonstrate any significantly better outcomes, with some even indicating increased complication rates. Therefore, the authors present a review of the current endovascular treatment options for central retinal artery occlusion.

Abstract
PURPOSE Transient retinal artery occlusion (TRAO) is a potentially underdiagnosed cause of immediate 'pad off' visual loss following phacoemulsification cataract surgery under sub-Tenon's anaesthesia. METHODS We describe a series of three patients presenting with enigmatic 'pad off' visual loss following phacoemulsification surgery, each diagnosed with TRAO. We describe the variable clinical presentation, illustrate the value of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging in establishing the diagnosis, and present the final visual outcomes. RESULTS Clinical findings alone may be subtle and inadequate in localising the pathology in patients with TRAO. Cross-comparison of superior and inferior macula OCT profiles in branch-pattern arterial occlusion-and between healthy and affected eyes in central-pattern arteriolar occlusion-is critical in clinching the diagnosis. The typical evolution of OCT appearance is acute-phase inner retinal thickening/oedema and hyperreflectivity followed by progressive, late-phase inner retinal atrophy. Visual acuity may recover but central scotomas, and defects in colour perception may persist. CONCLUSION The diagnosis of TRAO is challenging; delayed presentation may resolve fundal and retinal angiographic abnormalities. OCT may be the only imaging modality that can provide objective evidence of TRAO. Meticulous comparison/segmentation of OCT images is therefore mandatory in patients presenting with acute post-operative visual loss to exclude TRAO.

Abstract
PURPOSE To better characterize a novel spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) presentation, termed paracentral acute middle maculopathy, to describe this finding in patients with nonischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), and to support a proposed pathogenesis of intermediate and deep retinal capillary ischemia. DESIGN Retrospective observational case series. METHODS Clinical histories, high-resolution digital color imaging, red-free photography, fluorescein angiography, near-infrared reflectance, and spectral-domain OCT images of 484 patients with acute CRVO from 2 centers were evaluated for the presence of coexisting paracentral acute middle maculopathy. RESULTS Of 484 patients diagnosed with CRVO, 25 (5.2%) demonstrated evidence of concurrent paracentral acute middle maculopathy. Patients averaged 51 years of age and presented with complaints of paracentral scotomas. All patients demonstrated hyper-reflective plaquelike lesions at the level of the inner nuclear layer by spectral-domain OCT and showed corresponding dark-gray lesions on near-infrared reflectance and perivenular deep retinal whitening on color fundus photography. There was no fluorescein angiographic correlate to these lesions. On follow-up spectral-domain OCT imaging, the lesions had resolved into areas of inner nuclear layer atrophy with persistence of scotomas. CONCLUSIONS Paracentral acute middle maculopathy refers to characteristic hyper-reflective spectral-domain OCT lesions involving the middle layers of the retina at the level of the inner nuclear layer that may develop in response to ischemia of the intermediate and deep capillary plexuses. This series is the largest to describe this spectral-domain OCT finding to date, and it is the first to associate it with nonischemic CRVO.

Abstract
Gender medicine has been a major focus of research in recent years. The present review focuses on gender differences in the epidemiology of the most frequent ocular diseases that have been found to be associated with impaired ocular blood flow, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Data have accumulated indicating that hormones have an important role in these diseases, since there are major differences in the prevalence and incidence between men and pre- and post-menopausal women. Whether this is related to vascular factors is, however, not entirely clear. Interestingly, the current knowledge about differences in ocular vascular parameters between men and women is sparse. Although little data is available, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are most likely important regulators of blood flow in the retina and choroid, because they are key regulators of vascular tone in other organs. Estrogen seems to play a protective role since it decreases vascular resistance in large ocular vessels. Some studies indicate that hormone therapy is beneficial for ocular vascular disease in post-menopausal women. This evidence is, however, not sufficient to give any recommendation. Generally, remarkably few data are available on the role of sex hormones on ocular blood flow regulation, a topic that requires more attention in the future.

Abstract
An 86 year old woman experienced a sequential bilateral loss of vision over a period of less than 24 hours. Clinical findings and complementary studies suggested a bilateral atherogenic embolic event. Initially, she presented a superior branch retinal artery occlusion in her right eye followed by a central retinal artery occlusion with cilioretinal artery sparing in her left eye. Some conservative maneuvers performed did not improve visual acuity in the left eye. Supra-aortic Doppler ultrasonography revealed mild right internal carotid artery stenosis and moderate left internal carotid artery stenosis with a small, smooth, and homogeneous plaque. The transthoracic echocardiography showed a severe calcification of the mitral valve with a mild-moderate rim of stenosis. Central retinal artery occlusion and branch retinal artery occlusion are characterized by painless monocular loss of vision. Clinical approach and management attempt to treat the acute event, find the source of the vascular occlusion, and prevent further vascular events from occurring. Giant cell arteritis is a potentially treatable cause of central retinal artery occlusion and should be excluded in every single patient over 50 years old.

Abstract
AIM To report a case of cilioretinal artery occlusion (CRAO) with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) after a journey to high altitude region and the use of late period hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy successfully. CASE REPORT A previously healthy 48-year-old lowlander woman was admitted to our department for sudden blurred vision in her right eye started at 2 weeks prior to examination. The patient had a history of 1-month exposure to high altitude that finished a day before the onset of her complaints. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 10/20 in the right eye (RE) and 10/10 in the left eye. Fundus examination of the RE revealed whitening of the retina along the distribution of cilioretinal artery, sparing fovea, flame-shaped hemorrhages, and roth spots with minimally dilated and tortuous retinal veins. Visual field analysis revealed centrocecal scotoma. The patient was treated by a daily session of 2 h of HBO at 2.5 atmosphere absolute for 11 days. BCVA rised to a level of 20/20 for the RE and the scotomas were disappeared immediately after using of the HBO treatment. CONCLUSION CRVO related CRAO should be regarded as a rare complication of exposure to high altitude and HBO seems to be the treatment of choice of high altitude related co-occurence of CRVO and CRAO in the late period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The primary objective of this bi-center explorative pilot study was the quantitative assessment of visual field defects and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFT) over 6 months in patients with acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), in order to elucidate the natural course of NAION and provide a reference dataset for future treatment studies. METHODS 16 patients (age 41-80 years, nine males, seven females) suffering from acute NAION and presenting within 7 days after onset of symptoms were included in this study. The following examinations were carried out at the initial visit (month 0) and at months 2, 4 and 6: entire (90°) visual field examination with automated static white-on-white perimetry, quantified by mean defect (MD); peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFT) measurement with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT); assessment of distant best correct visual acuity (D-BCVA) and a quantification of the relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) using the swinging flashlight test with neutral density filters. Perimetric Mean Defect (MD) and RNFT values were each compared between the consecutive visits using the non-parametric Friedman test. RESULTS The initial MD was 6.2 dB (IQR 5.0-7.4) without significant changes further on. RNFT was 183 μm (IQR 148-252) initially, decreased significantly at month 2 (78 μm (IQR 71-93) and further at month 4 (64 μm (IQR 58-74) and 6 (61 μm (IQR 52-81), Friedman test, p < 0.001). Initially, RNFT was above normal limits (due to swelling) in 15/16 patients; at month 2 it was below normal limits in 13/16 patients, at month 4 in 12/13 patients and at month 6 in 9/10 patients. 7/16 patients exhibited segmental swelling of the optic disc, whereas the entire circumference of the optic disc showed RNFL thickening in 9/16 patients. CONCLUSION Functional deficits were present directly after onset of NAION and did not change relevantly further on. Morphological changes comprise severe swelling after onset of NAION, which rapidly turns into atrophy. Already after 2 months more than 80 % of the patients showed a RNFT below normal limits. Progressive RNFL thinning between month 2 and month 4 suggests ongoing atrophy, whereas a stable morphologic end point is reached after month 4.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Retinal artery occlusions (RAO) are severe conditions threatening vision, affecting the subsequent mortality of these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the work-up performed in all patients diagnosed with retinal artery occlusions evaluated in two university hospitals in France (Tours and Angers). RESULTS A total of 131 patients (131 eyes) with RAO were included, with a mean age of 69.5years and male predominance (64 %). Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) resulted in poor initial visual acuity (90 % less than count fingers), whereas those with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) had better visual acuity (63.6 % better than 20/40). Systemic arterial hypertension (HTN) was the most common associated risk factor. Carotid stenosis was found in 50 % of cases, leading to endarterectomy in nine patients (6.9 %), while an underlying cardiac cause was implicated in 14 % of cases. Giant cell arteritis was diagnosed in five patients (3.8 %). DISCUSSION Work-up of RAO may detect treatable cardiovascular and systemic conditions, allowing prevention of further ocular recurrence or stroke. CONCLUSION Etiologic work-up of retinal arterial occlusion can diagnose potentially treatable underlying systemic conditions, such as giant cell arteritis, cardiac conditions and extracranial cerebrovascular disease. Giant cell arteritis has to be ruled out at the acute phase, while the role and timing of semi-urgent testing (supra-aortic Doppler echography, echocardiography, electrocardiography, lab work-up) or delayed testing (transesophageal echocardiography, brain imaging) have yet to be determined.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hyperhomocysteinemia is known to be a risk factor in both retinal artery and retinal vein occlusions. We report the case of a young patient with combined occlusion of the cilioretinal artery and the central retinal vein due to hyperhomocysteinemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS A 23-year-old patient without significant medical history, presented for sudden, painless visual loss in the right eye. Ophthalmologic examination revealed best-corrected visual acuity of the right eye 8/10 P2, and 10/10 P2 on the left. Anterior segment exam was normal in both eyes, while the right fundus revealed white, ischemic edema, centered around a cilioretinal artery, sparing the fovea, with some hemorrhagic spots and disc edema. Fluorescein angiography confirmed delayed filling of the right cilioretinal artery and revealed a normal disc on the left. Two weeks later, the clinical picture had evolved into a right ischemic CRVO, confirmed by a second angiogram, with a decrease in visual acuity to 3/10. RESULTS A work-up was performed, including: a full lipid profile, serum electrolytes, ESR, CRP, a complete blood count (leukocytes, platelets, hemoglobin were normal), a coagulation work-up (PT, PTT, protein C, protein S, antithrombin III, factor V Leiden were normal), ANCA, antiphospholipid antibodies and antinuclear antibodies were negative, and finally cardiology studies (cardiac echo, carotid Doppler) and neurology (brain MRI) were ordered and came back normal. Otherwise, plasma homocysteine was moderately high on two samples, at 18.3 μmol/L and 17.78 μmol/L. Thyroid and renal work-ups were ordered. Urgent PRP was performed, and vitamin therapy (vitB12, vitB6, folic acid) was instituted. The subsequent course was remarkable for recovery of visual acuity to 10/10, P2 with persistence of an inferior altitudinal central scotoma. MTHFR C677T polymorphism was negative. DISCUSSION Retinal vascular occlusions (RVO) are serious events, which require investigation for underlying systemic disease, which can be life-threatening. The clinical picture is variable depending on the location of the occlusion, the extent of the ischemic area and the degree of macular involvement. The etiologies of RVO are varied, requiring a thorough biological assessment in young subjects. The association between hyperhomocysteinemia and RVO is proven, while this association with the MTHFR C677T polymorphism was not found. Vitamin therapy reduces plasma levels of homocysteine by 25% but its role in the treatment and prevention of RVO remains to be demonstrated. CONCLUSION Several cases of occlusion of the central retinal vein or one of its branches have been published. Combined occlusion of the central retinal vein and cilioretinal artery secondary to hyperhomocysteinemia does not appear to have been published, which would make our case unique.

Abstract
Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an ophthalmic emergency and the ocular analogue of cerebral stroke. Best evidence reflects that over three-quarters of patients suffer profound acute visual loss with a visual acuity of 20/400 or worse. This results in a reduced functional capacity and quality of life. There is also an increased risk of subsequent cerebral stroke and ischaemic heart disease. There are no current guideline-endorsed therapies, although the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) has been investigated in two randomized controlled trials. This review will describe the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical features of CRAO, and discuss current and future treatments, including the use of tPA in further clinical trials.

Abstract
UNLABELLED ABSTRACT.: PURPOSE Malfunction of retinal blood flow or oxygenation is believed to be involved in various diseases. Among them are retinal vessel occlusions, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Reliable, non-invasive technology for retinal oxygen measurements has been scarce and most of the knowledge on retinal oxygenation comes from animal studies. This thesis describes human retinal oximetry, performed with novel retinal oximetry technology. The thesis describes studies on retinal vessel oxygen saturation in (1) light and dark in healthy volunteers, (2) central retinal vein occlusion, (3) branch retinal vein occlusion, (4) central retinal artery occlusion, (5) diabetic retinopathy, (6) patients undergoing glaucoma surgery and (7) patients taking glaucoma medication. METHODS The retinal oximeter (Oxymap ehf., Reykjavik, Iceland) is based on a fundus camera. An attached image splitter allows the simultaneous capture of four images of the same area of the fundus. Two images are used for further analysis, one acquired with 586 nm light and one with 605 nm light. Light absorbance of retinal vessels is sensitive to oxygen saturation at 605 nm but not at 586 nm. Measurement of reflected light at these wavelengths allows estimation of oxygen saturation in the main retinal vessels. This is performed with custom-made analysis software. RESULTS LIGHT AND DARK: After 30 min in the dark, oxygen saturation in retinal arterioles of healthy volunteers was 92 ± 4% (mean ± SD, n = 15). After 5 min in 80 cd/m(2) light, the arteriolar saturation was 89 ± 5%. The decrease was statistically significant (p = 0.008). The corresponding values for retinal venules were 60 ± 5% in the dark and 55 ± 10% in the light (p = 0.020). Similar results were found after alternating 5 min periods of darkness and light. In a second experiment (n = 19), a significant decrease in retinal vessel oxygen saturation was found in 100 cd/m(2) light compared with darkness but 1 and 10 cd/m(2) light had no significant effect. CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION: In patients with central retinal vein occlusion, the mean saturation in affected retinal venules was 49 ± 12%, while the mean value for venules in the fellow eye was 65 ± 6% (mean ± SD, p = 0.003, n = 8). The retinal arteriolar saturation was the same in affected (99 ± 3%) and the unaffected (99 ± 6%) eyes. The venous oxygen saturation showed much variation between affected eyes. BRANCH RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION: Median oxygen saturation in venules affected by branch retinal vein occlusion was 59% (range, 12-93%, n = 22), while it was 63% (23-80%) in unaffected venules in the affected eye and 55% (39-80%) in venules in the fellow eye. The difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference between affected arterioles (median 101%; range, 89-115%) and unaffected arterioles (95%, 85-104%) in the affected eye (p < 0.05, n = 18). CENTRAL RETINAL ARTERY OCCLUSION: In a patient with a day's history of central retinal artery occlusion due to temporal arteritis, the mean arteriolar saturation was 71 ± 9% and 63 ± 9% in the venules. One month later, after treatment with prednisolone, the mean arteriolar saturation was 100 ± 4% and the venous saturation 54 ± 5%. DIABETIC RETINOPATHY: When compared with healthy volunteers (n = 31), patients with all categories of diabetic retinopathy had on average 7-10 percentage points higher saturation in retinal arterioles (p < 0.05 for all categories, n = 6-8 in each category). In venules, the saturation was 8-12 percentage points higher (p < 0.05 for all categories). GLAUCOMA SURGERY: Oxygen saturation in retinal arterioles increased by 2 percentage points on average (p = 0.046, n = 19) with surgery, which lowered intraocular pressure from 23 ± 7 mmHg (mean ± SD) to 10 ± 4 mmHg (p < 0.0001). No other significant changes were found (p ≥ 0.35). DORZOLAMIDE: A significant reduction of 3 percentage points was found in arterioles (p < 0.01) and venules (p < 0.05) when patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension changed from dorzolamide-timolol combination eye drops to timolol alone (n = 6). No change was found in patients, who started on timolol and switched to the combination therapy (p > 0.05, n = 7). CONCLUSIONS Dual wavelength oximetry can be used to non-invasively measure retinal vessel oxygen saturation in health and disease. The results indicate that retinal vessel oxygen saturation is (1) increased in the dark, (2) lower in venules affected by central retinal vein occlusions, (3) variable in branch retinal vein occlusion, (4) lower in retinal arterioles in central retinal artery occlusion, (5) increased in diabetic retinopathy, (6-7) mildly affected by glaucoma surgery or dorzolamide.

Abstract
OPINION STATEMENT Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an ocular emergency and is the ocular analogue of cerebral stroke. It results in profound, usually monocular vision loss, and is associated with significant functional morbidity. The risk factors for CRAO are the same atherosclerotic risk factors as for stroke and heart disease. As such, individuals with CRAO may be at risk of ischemic end organ damage such as a cerebral stroke. Therefore, the management of CRAO is not only to restore vision, but at the same time to manage risk factors that may lead to other vascular conditions. There are a number of therapies that has been used in the treatment of CRAO in the past. These include carbogen inhalation, acetazolamide infusion, ocular massage and paracentesis, as well as various vasodilators such as intravenous glyceryl trinitrate. None of these "standard agents" have been shown to alter the natural history of disease definitively. There has been recent interest shown in the use of thrombolytic therapy, delivered either intravenously or intra-arterially by direct catheterisation of the ophthalmic artery. Whilst a number of observational series have shown that the recovery of vision can be quite dramatic, two recent randomised controlled trials have not demonstrated efficacy. On the contrary, intra-arterial delivery of thrombolytic may result in an increased risk of intracranial and systemic haemorrhage, while the intravenous use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was not shown to be efficacious within 24 h of symptom onset. Nevertheless, both of these studies have shown one thing in common, and that is for treatment to be effective in CRAO, it must be deployed within a short time window, probably within 6 h of symptom onset. Therefore, while CRAO is a disease that does not have a treatment, nevertheless it needs to follow the same principles of treatment as any other vascular end organ ischaemic disease. That is, to attempt to reperfuse ischemic tissue as quickly as possible and to institute secondary prevention early.

Abstract
A 77-year-old man presented with an inferior hemivisual field defect in the left eye. Funduscopy revealed well demarcated retinal edema of the superior quadrant resembling hemicentral retinal artery occlusion. Further, the upper and inferior retinal arteries emerged separately from the optic disc. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated a marked filling delay of the upper retinal artery. We repeated fluorescein angiography, which showed that the involved upper retinal artery was a cilioretinal artery having an earlier dye appearance than the lower retinal artery. We suggest that when cases of hemicentral retinal artery occlusion are encountered, vascular architecture at the optic disc should be evaluated carefully.

Abstract
Crohn disease is an inflammatory bowel disease frequently associated with extraintestinal manifestations. Ocular manifestations are uncommon but may cause significant morbidity, including blindness. We report the first case of a 9-year-old boy with biopsy-proven Crohn disease who developed a cilioretinal artery-sparing central retinal artery occlusion. After 2 months of follow-up, the patient developed optic atrophy with no change in visual acuity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Because retinal vascular disease is associated with ischemia and increased oxidative stress, the vasodilator function of retinal arterioles was examined after retinal ischemia induced by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). The role of superoxide anions in the development of vascular dysfunction was assessed. METHODS IOP was increased and maintained at 80 to 90 mm Hg for 30, 60, or 90 minutes by infusing saline into the anterior chamber of a porcine eye. The fellow eye with normal IOP (10-20 mm Hg) served as control. In some pigs, superoxide dismutase mimetic TEMPOL (1 mM) or vehicle (saline) was injected intravitreally before IOP elevation. After enucleation, retinal arterioles were isolated and pressurized without flow for functional analysis by recording diameter changes using videomicroscopic techniques. Dihydroethidium (DHE) was used to detect superoxide production in isolated retinal arterioles. RESULTS Isolated retinal arterioles developed stable basal tone and the vasodilations to endothelium-dependent nitric oxide (NO)-mediated agonists bradykinin and L-lactate were significantly reduced only by 90 minutes of ischemia. However, vasodilation to endothelium-independent NO donor sodium nitroprusside was unaffected after all time periods of ischemia. DHE staining showed that 90 minutes of ischemia significantly increased superoxide levels in retinal arterioles. Intravitreal injection of membrane-permeable radical scavenger but not vehicle before ischemia prevented elevation of vascular superoxide and preserved bradykinin-induced dilation. CONCLUSIONS Endothelium-dependent NO-mediated dilation of retinal arterioles is impaired by 90 minutes of ischemia induced by elevated IOP. The inhibitory effect appears to be mediated by the alteration of NO signaling via vascular superoxide.

Abstract
Photoreceptors and other cells of the retina consume large quantities of energy to efficiently convert light information into a neuronal signal understandable by the brain. The necessary energy is mainly provided by the oxygen-dependent generation of ATP in the numerous mitochondria of retinal cells. To secure the availability of sufficient oxygen for this process, the retina requires constant blood flow through the vasculature of the retina and the choroid. Inefficient supply of oxygen and nutrients, as it may occur in conditions of disturbed hemodynamics or vascular defects, results in tissue ischemia or hypoxia. This has profound consequences on retinal function and cell survival, requiring an adaptational response by cells to cope with the reduced oxygen tension. Central to this response are hypoxia inducible factors, transcription factors that accumulate under hypoxic conditions and drive the expression of a large variety of target genes involved in angiogenesis, cell survival and metabolism. Prominent among these factors are vascular endothelial growth factor and erythropoietin, which may contribute to normal angiogenesis during development, but may also cause neovascularization and vascular leakage under pathologically reduced oxygen levels. Since ischemia and hypoxia may have a role in various retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, studying the cellular and molecular response to reduced tissue oxygenation is of high relevance. In addition, the concept of preconditioning with ischemia or hypoxia demonstrates the capacity of the retina to activate endogenous survival mechanisms, which may protect cells against a following noxious insult. Part of these mechanisms is the local production of protective factors such as erythropoietin. Due to its plethora of effects in the retina including neuro- and vaso-protective activities, erythropoietin has gained strong interest as potential therapeutic factor for retinal degenerative diseases.
