Polymers for enhanced oil recovery: A paradigm for structure–property relationship in aqueous solution

Aqueous hybrids of amino-functionalized nanosilica and acrylamide-based polymer for enhanced oil recovery

Amino-functionalized nanosilica (ANS) was prepared using nanosilica (NS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) aiming to reinforce the interaction between nanoparticles and polymer molecules. The copolymer of acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (PM), and four ANS samples with different NS to APTES ratios were synthesized. A series of nanoparticle/polymer hybrid systems were fabricated by introducing NS or ANS suspension into PM aqueous solution. The rheological properties and surface activities of these hybrid systems were studied in comparison with PM. The results indicate that the salt-tolerance and heat-resistance properties of PM solution were improved by the introduction of ANS particles. Moreover, the structures of ANS samples have a significant effect on the effectiveness of the nanoparticles due to the fact that the amine group density on the ANS surface can affect the strength of intermolecular interaction between nanoparticles and polymer molecules. Additionally, the better ability of the ANS sample with proper amine group density showed in reducing the oil/water interfacial tension over NS and other ANS samples made it a more promising chemical for enhancing oil recovery. The results from core flooding tests show that the PM/ANS system has the greatest oil recovery factor (16.30%), while the values for PM/NS and PM are 10.84% and 6.00%, respectively.

The amino-functionalized nanosilica/polymer hybrid systems have better salt tolerance and EOR performance than unmodified nanosilica polymer hybrid systems.

Associating Polymer Networks Based on Cyclodextrin Inclusion Compounds for Heavy Oil Recovery

This work evaluates an approach to improve the enhanced heavy oil recovery performance of hydrophobic associating polymer. A polymeric system based on water-soluble hydrophobic associating polymer (WSHAP) and cyclodextrin (CD) polymer was proposed in this work. Addition of CD polymer to WSHAP forms interpolymer bridges by inclusion of CD groups with hydrophobic tails, and thereby the network structure is strengthened. The proposed system offers good viscoelasticity, pronounced shear thinning, and interesting viscosity-temperature relations. Sand pack tests indicated that the proposed system can build high resistance factor during the propagation in porous media, and its moderate adsorption phenomenon was represented by the thickness of the adsorbed layer. The relationship between effective viscosity and oil recovery increment indicated that the proposed system can significantly reduce the residual oil saturation due to the “piston-like” propagation. The overall oil recovery was raised by 5.7 and 24.5% of the original oil in place compared with WSHAP and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), respectively.

Cleavage of the main carbon chain backbone of high molecular weight polyacrylamide by aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment

High molecular weight partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PAM) can be bio-hydrolyzed on the amide side group, however, solid evidence regarding the biological cleavage of its main carbon chain backbone is limited. In this study, viscometry, flow field-flow fractionation multi-angle light scattering (FFF-MALS), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis were used to investigate the biodegradability of PAM with a nominal molecular weight of 2 × 10⁷ Da (Da) in two suspended aerobic (25 and 40 °C) and two upflow anaerobic blanket reactors (35 and 55 °C) operated for 470 d under a hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 2 d. Both anaerobic and aerobic biological treatment reduced the viscosity from 2.02 cp in the influent to 1.45-1.60 cp, and reduced the molecular weight of PAM using FFF-MALS from 2.17 × 10⁷ Da to less than one-third its original size. The removals of both the amide group and carbon chain backbone in the PAM molecule were further supported by the FTIR analysis. In comparison with the other conditions, thermophilic anaerobic treatment exhibited higher efficiency for PAM biodegradation. Batch test excluded the influence of temperature on the molecular weight of PAM over the range 25-55 °C, suggesting that cleavage of the main carbon chain backbone was attributed to biological degradation. Our results suggested that high molecular weight PAM was biodegradable, but mineralization did not occur.

Triblock copolymers of styrene and sodium methacrylate as smart materials: synthesis and rheological characterization

Well-defined amphiphilic triblock poly(sodium methacrylate)-polystyrene-poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMAA-b-PS-b-PMAA) copolymers characterized by a different length of either the hydrophilic or the hydrophobic block have been synthesized by ATRP. In solution the micelle-like aggregates consist of a collapsed PS core surrounded by stretched charged PMAA chains. The micelles are kinetically ‘frozen’ and as a consequence the triblock copolymers do not show a significant surface activity. The hydrophilic block length has a major influence on the rheology, the shortest PMAA blocks yielding the strongest gels (at the same total weight concentration). The hydrophobic block length has only a minor influence until a certain threshold, below which the hydrophobic interactions are too weak resulting in weak gels. A mathematical model is used to describe the micelle radius and the results were in good agreement with the experimentally found radius in transmission electron microscopy. The influences of the ionic strength, pH and temperature on the rheology has also been investigated, showing the potential of these polymers as smart hydrogels. The change in conformation of the hydrophilic corona from the collapsed state to the stretched state by changing the pH was quantified with zeta-potential measurements. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation of this kind of triblock copolymers in terms of their rheological behavior in water.

Natural and synthetic polymers in fabric and home care applications

Polymers can be tailored to provide different benefits in Fabric & Home Care formulations depending on the monomers and modifications used, such as avoiding dye transfer inhibition in the wash, modifying the surface of tiles or increasing the viscosity and providing suspension properties to consumer products. Specifically, the rheology modification properties of synthetic and natural polymers are discussed in this chapter. The choice of a polymeric rheology modifier will depend on the formulation ingredients (charges, functional groups), the type and the amount of surfactants, the pH and the desired rheology modification. Natural polymeric rheology modifiers have been traditionally used in the food industry, being xanthan gum one of the most well-known ones. On the contrary, synthetic rheology modifiers are preferably used in paints & coats, textile printing and cleaning products.

Experimental Study of Rheological Properties and Oil Displacement Efficiency in Oilfields for a Synthetic Hydrophobically Modified Polymer

In a previous study, we developed a synthetic hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) using bromododecane (BD), which we denote as BD-HMHEC. In this work, we continually investigate the rheological properties and its oil displacement efficiency in PuTao well area in Daqing oilfields, China. Results show that BD-HMHEC solution has good viscosification, thermal-resistance, salt-tolerance, shear resistance, and acid/alkali resistance. The storage modulus (G’) and the loose modulus (G”) of the BD-HMHEC solutions increase significantly with increasing BD-HMHEC concentration, and the solution becomes viscoelastic at a sufficiently high BD-HMHEC concentration. The core flooding results showed BD-HMHEC flooding improves oil recovery by 7–14% in comparison with HEC flooding at concentrations of 4,000 mg/L under equivalent conditions. Moreover, BD-HMHEC flooding improves oil recovery by 7–8% after conducting water and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) flooding. The oil displacement mechanism of BD-HMHEC solutions is discussed based on a visual evaluation. The results indicate that BD-HMHEC flooding is a feasible means for improving oil recovery after water/HPAM flooding.

Complex Formations between Surfactants and Polyelectrolytes of the Same Charge on a Water Surface

The mechanism of complex formation between surfactants and polyelectrolytes with the same charge on the water surface was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and phase-sensitive sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy. Although complex formation between highly charged surfactants and polyelectrolytes of the same charge is generally expected to be prohibited by the electrostatic repulsive force, our study shows that it is possible to form thermodynamically stable complexes when excess ions are present in the solution. We found that anionic partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) could interact with anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on a water surface in the presence of salts. With excess Na⁺ ions in the solution, the charge screening effect allows HPAM to weakly interact with SDS via hydrogen bonds. In the presence of divalent Ca²⁺ ions, the surfactant and the polymer are strongly coupled by forming Ca²⁺ ion bridges and hydrogen bonds. Our calculation shows that the presence of Ca²⁺ ions creates a steep binding energy of ∼30 kJ/mol near the water surface. These results were qualitatively verified using phase-sensitive sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy.

Dynamics of Charged Species in Ionic-Neutral Block Copolymer and Surfactant Complexes

Structure-property relationships of ionic block copolymer (BCP) surfactant complexes are critical toward the progress of favorable engineering design of efficient charge-transport materials. In this article, molecular dynamics simulations are used to understand the dynamics of charged-neutral BCP and surfactant complexes. The dynamics are examined for two different systems: charged-neutral double-hydrophilic and hydrophobic-hydrophilic block copolymers with oppositely charged surfactant moieties. The dynamics of the surfactant head, tails, and charges are studied for five different BCP volume fractions. We observe that the dynamics of the different species solely depend on the balance between electrostatic and entropic interactions between the charged species and the neutral monomers. The favorable hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions and the unfavorable hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions determine the mobilities of the monomers. The dynamical properties of the charge species influence complex formation. Structural relaxations exhibit length-scale dependent behavior, with slower relaxation at the radius of gyration length-scale and faster relaxation at the segmental length-scale, consistent with previous results. The dynamical analysis correlates ion-exchange kinetics to the self-assembly behavior of the complexes.

Role of Bio-Based Polymers on Improving Turbulent Flow Characteristics: Materials and Application

The remarkable ability of polymeric additives to reduce the level of frictional drag significantly in turbulent flow, even under extremely low dilutions, is known as turbulent drag-reduction behavior. Several bio-polymers have been assessed as promising drag-reducing agents for the potential replacement of high molecular weight synthetic polymers to improve safety and ameliorate environmental concerns. This article reviews the recent advances regarding the impact of several bio-polymer additives on turbulent drag reduction in either pipe or rotating disk flow systems, and their potential applications in the petroleum, biomedical, and agricultural industries.

Applications of Water-Soluble Polymers in Turbulent Drag Reduction

Water-soluble polymers with high molecular weights are known to decrease the frictional drag in turbulent flow very effectively at concentrations of tens or hundreds of ppm. This drag reduction efficiency of water-soluble polymers is well known to be closely associated with the flow conditions and rheological, physical, and/or chemical characteristics of the polymers added. Among the many promising polymers introduced in the past several decades, this review focuses on recent progress in the drag reduction capability of various water-soluble macromolecules in turbulent flow including both synthetic and natural polymers such as poly(ethylene oxide), poly(acrylic acid), polyacrylamide, poly(N-vinyl formamide), gums, and DNA. The polymeric species, experimental parameters, and numerical analysis of these water-soluble polymers in turbulent drag reduction are highlighted, along with several existing and potential applications. The proposed drag reduction mechanisms are also discussed based on recent experimental and numerical researches. This article will be helpful to the readers to understand better the complex behaviors of a turbulent flow with various water-soluble polymeric additives regarding experimental conditions, drag reduction mechanisms, and related applications.

Experimental Polymer Mechanochemistry and its Interpretational Frameworks

Polymer mechanochemistry is an emerging field at the interface of chemistry, materials science, physics and engineering. It aims at understanding and exploiting unique reactivities of polymer chains confined to highly non-equilibrium stretched geometries by interactions with their surroundings. Macromolecular chains or their segments become stretched in bulk polymers under mechanical loads or when polymer solutions are sonicated or flow rapidly through abrupt contractions. An increasing amount of empirical data suggests that mechanochemical phenomena are widespread wherever polymers are used. In the past decade, empirical mechanochemistry has progressed enormously, from studying fragmentations of commodity polymers by simple backbone homolysis to demonstrations of self-strengthening and stress-reporting materials and mechanochemical cascades using purposefully designed monomers. This progress has not yet been matched by the development of conceptual frameworks within which to rationalize, systematize and generalize empirical mechanochemical observations. As a result, mechanistic and/or quantitative understanding of mechanochemical phenomena remains, with few exceptions, tentative. In this review we aim at systematizing reported macroscopic manifestations of polymer mechanochemistry, and critically assessing the interpretational framework that underlies their molecular rationalizations from a physical chemist's perspective. We propose a hierarchy of mechanochemical phenomena which may guide the development of multiscale models of mechanochemical reactivity to match the breadth and utility of the Eyring equation of chemical kinetics. We discuss the limitations of the approaches to quantifying and validating mechanochemical reactivity, with particular focus on sonicated polymer solutions, in order to identify outstanding questions that need to be solved for polymer mechanochemistry to become a rigorous, quantitative field. We conclude by proposing 7 problems whose solution may have a disproportionate impact on the development of polymer mechanochemistry.
