Phototransformation of selected pharmaceuticals during UV treatment of drinking water

Treatment of phenol wastewater using hydroxyl radical produced by micro-gap discharge plasma technique

Hydroxyl radical produced by non-equilibrium plasma, which was induced by micro-gap dielectric barrier discharge, was used for the treatment of phenol wastewater. The advantage of this method was that chemicals and catalysts were not involved when hydroxyl radical was generated from water and oxygen. A proportional efficiency of phenol removal was observed with the hydroxyl radical increasing. The removal efficiency was higher in a basic condition than in an acidic condition, which was enhanced with the pH value of the solution increasing from 3.6 to 11.2. It was rational to adjust the pH value between 9.0 and 10.0. The removal efficiency of phenol was reduced when the conductivity of the solution increased from 0 to 200 micros x cm(-1); the highest was found in the solution without Na2CO3. The UV spectral absorption in the process indicated that few organic compounds with a conjugated structure were included in the treated wastewater.

Degradation of selected pharmaceuticals in aqueous solution with UV and UV/H(2)O(2)

The degradation of four pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs), ibuprofen (IBU), diphenhydramine (DP), phenazone (PZ), and phenytoin (PHT) was investigated via ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and UV/H(2)O(2) process with a low-pressure (LP) UV lamp. For each PhAC tested, direct photolysis quantum yields at 254 nm were found to be ranging from 6.32 x 10(-2) to 2.79 x 10(-1)molE(-1) at pH 7. The second-order rate constants of the reaction between the PhACs and OH were determined to be from 4.86 x 10(9) to 6.67 x 10(9)M(-1)s(-1) by using a competition kinetic model which utilized para-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA) as a reference compound. The overall effect of OH radical scavenging from humic acid (HA) and anions HCO(3)(-), NO(3)(-) was measured utilizing R(OH,UV) method through examining the aqueous photodegradation of pCBA as a probe compound. Moreover, these fundamental direct and indirect photolysis parameters were applied in the model prediction for oxidation rate constants of the PhACs in UV/H(2)O(2) process. It was found that the predicted oxidation rate constants approximated the observed ones. The results indicated that the new R(OH,UV) probe compound method was applicable for measuring background OH radical scavenging effects in water treatment process of UV/H(2)O(2). Furthermore, by GC-MS analysis, most of the intermediates created during the photodegradation of the selected PhACs in UV/H(2)O(2) process were identified. For the photodegradation of PZ, a competition mechanism existed between the direct UV photolysis and the oxidation of OH. An appropriate dosage of H(2)O(2) could hinder the occurrence of the direct photolysis.

Removal of residual pharmaceuticals from aqueous systems by advanced oxidation processes

Over the past few years, pharmaceuticals are considered as an emerging environmental problem due to their continuous input and persistence to the aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are technologies based on the intermediacy of hydroxyl and other radicals to oxidize recalcitrant, toxic and non-biodegradable compounds to various by-products and eventually to inert end-products. The environmental applications of AOPs are numerous, including water and wastewater treatment (i.e. removal of organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogens), air pollution abatement and soil remediation. AOPs are applied for the abatement of pollution caused by the presence of residual pharmaceuticals in waters for the last decade. In this light, this paper reviews and assesses the effectiveness of various AOPs for pharmaceutical removal from aqueous systems.

Photodegradation of the steroid hormones 17beta-estradiol (E2) and 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in dilute aqueous solution

The photochemical transformation of natural estrogenic steroid 17beta-estradiol (E2) and the synthetic oral contraceptive 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) has been studied in dilute non buffered aqueous solution (pH 5.5-6.0) upon monochromatic (254 nm) and polychromatic (lambda>290 nm) irradiation. Upon irradiation at 254 nm, the quantum yields of E2 and EE2 photolysis were similar and evaluated to be 0.067+/-0.007 and 0.062+/-0.007, respectively. Upon polychromatic excitation, and by using phenol as chemical actinometer, the photolysis efficiencies have been determined to be 0.07+/-0.01 and 0.08+/-0.01 for E2 and EE2, respectively. For both estrogens, photodegradation by-products were identified with GC/MS and LC/MS. In a first step, a model compound--5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthol (THN)--, which represents the photoactive phenolic group, was used to obtain basic photoproduct structural informations. Numerous primary and secondary products were observed, corresponding to hydroxylated phenolic- or quinone-type compounds.

Input dynamics and fate in surface water of the herbicide metolachlor and of its highly mobile transformation product metolachlor

A large number of herbicide transformation products has been detected in surface waters and groundwaters of agricultural areas, often even in higher concentrations and more frequently than their parent compounds. However, their input dynamics and fate in surface waters are still rather poorly understood. This study compares the aquatic fate, concentration levels, and dynamics of the transformation product metolachlor ethanesulfonic acid (metolachlor ESA) and its parent compound metolachlor, an often-used corn herbicide. To this end, laboratory photolysis studies were combined with highly temporally resolved concentration measurements and lake mass balance modeling in the study area of Lake Greifensee (Switzerland). It is found that the two compounds show distinctly different concentration dynamics in the lake tributaries. Concentration-discharge relationships for metolachlor ESA in the main tributary showed a high baseflow concentration and increasing discharge dependence during harvest season, whereas baseflow concentrations of metolachlor were negligible and the discharge dependence was restricted to the period immediately following application. From this it was estimated that 70% of the yearly load of metolachlor ESA to the lake was due to groundwater recharge, whereas, for metolachlor, the bigger part of the load, 50-80%, stemmed from event-driven runoff. Lake mass balance modeling showed that the input dynamics of metolachlor and metolachlor ESA are reflected in their concentration dynamics in the lake's epilimnion and that both compounds show a similar fate in the epilimnion of Lake Greifensee during the summer months with half-lives on the order of 100-200 days, attributable to photolysis and another loss process of similar magnitude, potentially biodegradation. The behavior of metolachlor ESA can likely be generalized to other persistent and highly mobile transformation products. In the future, this distinctly different behavior of mobile pesticide transformation products should find a more appropriate reflection in exposure models used in chemical risk assessment and in pesticide risk management.

Oxidation of chlorfenvinphos in ultrapure and natural waters by ozonation and photochemical processes

The chemical oxidation of the organophosphorus insecticide chlorfenvinphos, a priority pollutant in aquatic environments, has been conducted in ultrapure water, by means of single degradation agents (ozone and UV radiation), and by the Advanced Oxidation Processes constituted by combinations of these oxidants (O(3)/H(2)O(2) and UV/H(2)O(2)). The influence of the operating variables was discussed, and the degradation rates were evaluated by determining the rate constants for the reactions with ozone (k(O)(3)=3.7+/-0.2 L mol(-1)s(-1)) and OH radicals (k(OH)=(3.2+/-0.2)x10(9) L mol(-1)s(-1)), as well as the quantum yield for the photodegradation (around 0.1 mol E(-1), depending on the pH). Additionally, the ozonation of chlorfenvinphos in a natural water system (a surface water from a reservoir) was studied. The influence of the operating conditions on the insecticide removal efficiency was established, and the R(ct) parameter was evaluated. A kinetic model was proposed for the prediction of the elimination rate of chlorfenvinphos in the ozonation process and the results obtained reveal a good agreement between experimental results and predicted values.
