Abstract
As a global public health problem, food safety has attracted increasing concern. To minimize the risk exposure of food to harmful ingredients, food quality and safety inspection that covers the whole process of "from farm to fork" is much desired. Fluorescent sensing is a promising and powerful screening tool for sensing hazardous substances in food and thus plays a crucial role in promoting food safety assurance. However, traditional fluorphores generally suffer the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which limit their application in food quality and safety inspection. In this regard, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission property (AIEgens) showed large potential in food analysis since AIEgens effectively surmount the ACQ effect with much better detection sensitivity, accuracy, and robustness. In this contribution, we review the latest developments of food safety monitoring by AIEgens, which will focus on the molecular design of AIEgens and their sensing principles. Several examples of AIE-based sensing applications for screening food contaminations are highlighted, and future perspectives and challenges in this emerging field are tentatively elaborated. We hope this review can motivate new research ideas and interest to aid food safety and quality control, and facilitate more collaborative endeavors to advance the state-of-the-art sensing developments and reduce actual translational gap between laboratory research and industrial production.

Abstract
Recently, interest in smart packaging, which can show the color change of the packaging film according to the state of the food and evaluate the quality or freshness of the packaged food in real-time, is increasing. As a color indicator, a natural colorant, anthocyanin, drew a lot of attention due to their various colors as well as useful functions properties such as antioxidant activity and anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, prevention of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. In particular, the pH-responsive color-changing function of anthocyanins is useful for making color indicator smart packaging films. This review addressed the latest information on the use of natural pigment anthocyanins for intelligent and active food packaging applications. Recent studies on eco-friendly biodegradable polymer-based color indicator films incorporated with anthocyanins have been addressed. Also, studies on the use of smart packaging films to monitor the freshness of foods such as milk, meat, and fish were reviewed. This review highlights the potential and challenges for the use of anthocyanins as pH-responsive color-changing films for intelligent food packaging applications, which may be beneficial for further development of smart color indicator films for practical use.

Abstract
Optical sensors fabricated in zeolite nanoparticle composite films rely on changes in their optical properties (refractive index, n, and thickness, d) to produce a measurable response in the presence of a target analyte. Here, ellipsometry is used to characterize the changes in optical properties of Linde Type L (LTL) zeolite thin films in the presence of Cu2+ ions in solution, with a view to improving the design of optical sensors that involve the change of n and/or d due to the adsorption of Cu2+ ions. The suitability of two different ellipsometry techniques (single wavelength and spectroscopic) for the evaluation of changes in n and d of both undoped and zeolite-doped films during exposure to water and Cu2+-containing solutions was investigated. The influence of pre-immersion thermal treatment conditions on sensor response was also studied. Due to the high temporal resolution, single wavelength ellipsometry facilitated the identification of a Cu2+ concentration response immediately after Cu2+ introduction, indicating that the single wavelength technique is suitable for dynamic studies of sensor–analyte interactions over short time scales. In comparison, spectroscopic ellipsometry produced a robust analysis of absolute changes in film n and d, as well as yielding insight into the net influence of competing and simultaneous changes in n and d inside the zeolite-doped films arising due to water adsorption and the ion exchange of potassium (K+) cations by copper (Cu2+).

Abstract
Background: The idea of reusing dispensed medicines is appealing to the general public provided its benefits are illustrated, its risks minimized, and the logistics resolved. For example, medicine reuse could help reduce medicinal waste, protect the environment and improve public health. However, the associated technologies and legislation facilitating medicine reuse are generally not available. The availability of suitable technologies could arguably help shape stakeholders' beliefs and in turn, uptake of a future medicine reuse scheme by tackling the risks and facilitating the practicalities. A literature survey is undertaken to lay down the groundwork for implementing technologies on and around pharmaceutical packaging in order to meet stakeholders' previously expressed misgivings about medicine reuse ('stakeholder requirements'), and propose a novel ecosystem for, in effect, reusing returned medicines. Methods: A structured literature search examining the application of existing technologies on pharmaceutical packaging to enable medicine reuse was conducted and presented as a narrative review. Results: Reviewed technologies are classified according to different stakeholders' requirements, and a novel ecosystem from a technology perspective is suggested as a solution to reusing medicines. Conclusion: Active sensing technologies applying to pharmaceutical packaging using printed electronics enlist medicines to be part of the Internet of Things network. Validating the quality and safety of returned medicines through this network seems to be the most effective way for reusing medicines and the correct application of technologies may be the key enabler.

Abstract
The preservation of perishable products to maintain their quality is of paramount importance for food safety and security, and is attracting more attention due to increasing concerns regarding food quality, healthcare, and quality of life. Advances in technology and materials in recent years have led to the development and implementation of intelligent packaging for perishable products that can monitor or even control their quality in a supply chain. In this paper, the techniques used in intelligent packaging (i.e., indicators, sensors, and identification technology) and the major printing methods for fabricating electronics (i.e., inkjet printing, screen printing, and gravure printing) are reviewed with a focus on the packaging of perishable products. Although the high manufacturing costs pose a major challenge the commercialization and large-scale deployment of perishable products, it is expected that the technological progresses in printing electronics will significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of intelligent packaging to a threshold of acceptance by markets. In addition, the broad applications of intelligent packaging can facilitate the traction and monitoring of perishable products for better control of the product quality and improved management of the supply chain.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is playing a pivotal role in improving quality of life due to its versatile applications in many areas of research. In this regard, nanoparticles have gained significant importance. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) amongst other nanoparticles are being used in producing nanocomposites. Methods like solvent casting, solution casting, solvent volatilization, twin-screw extrusion, melt compounding and extrusion blow molding have been applied to produce ZnO NPs based (bio)polymer composites. These composites are of great interest in the research area of food packaging materials due to their improved multifunctional characteristics like their mechanical, barrier and antimicrobial properties. This paper gives an overview of the main methods to synthesize ZnO NPs, methods to incorporate ZnO NPs in (bio)polymers, and finally, the gas barrier and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. As a conclusion, a maximum decline in oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor permeability was reported as 66%, 17% and 38% respectively, while tensile strength and young's modulus were observed to increase by 32% and 57% respectively, for different (bio)polymer/ZnO nanocomposites.

Abstract
Due to inspiration from the Nepenthes pitcher plant, a frontier of devices has emerged with unmatched capabilities. Liquid-infused surfaces (LISs), particularly known for their liquid-repelling behavior under low tilting angles (<5°), have demonstrated a plethora of applications in medical, marine, energy, industrial, and environmental materials. This review presents recent developments of LIS technology and its prospective to define the future direction of this technology in solving tomorrow's real-life challenges. First, an introduction to the different models explaining the physical phenomena of these surfaces, their wettability, and viscous-dependent frictional forces is discussed. Then, an outline of different emerging strategies required to fabricate a stable liquid-infused interface is presented, including different substrates, lubricants, surface chemistries, and design parameters which can be tuned depending on the application. Furthermore, applications of LIS coatings in the areas of anticorrosion, antifouling, anti-icing, self-healing, droplet manipulation, and biomedical devices will be presented followed by the limitations and future direction of this technology.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is becoming an important substrate for engineering multifunctional nanomaterials with singular and tunable properties for application in several domains. Here, antimicrobial conductive nanocomposites composed of poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) and BNC were fabricated as freestanding films for application in food packaging. The nanocomposite films were prepared through the one-pot polymerization of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) inside the BNC nanofibrous network and in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as cross-linking agent. The ensuing films are macroscopically homogeneous, more transparent than pristine BNC, and present thermal stability up to 265 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Furthermore, the films have good mechanical performance (Young's modulus ≥ 3.1 GPa), high water-uptake capacity (450-559%) and UV-blocking properties. The zwitterion film with 62 wt.% cross-linked PSBMA showed bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus (4.3-log CFU mL-1 reduction) and Escherichia coli (1.1-log CFU mL-1 reduction), and proton conductivity ranging between 1.5 × 10-4 mS cm-1 (40 °C, 60% relative humidity (RH)) and 1.5 mS cm-1 (94 °C, 98% RH). Considering the current set of properties, PSBMA/BNC nanocomposites disclose potential as films for active food packaging, due to their UV-barrier properties, moisture scavenging ability, and antimicrobial activity towards pathogenic microorganisms responsible for food spoilage and foodborne illness; and also for intelligent food packaging, due to the proton motion relevant for protonic-conduction humidity sensors that monitor food humidity levels.
