Abstract
Two benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY, in which one parent BODIPY core is fused with one and two benzothieno rings, respectively, were synthesized from BODIPYs substituted with 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenyl at the β-position. The first H2SO4-induced cyclization and deborylation afforded benzothieno[b]-fused dipyrrin derivatives, which can easily complex with BF3·OEt2 to form the desired benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs. It was revealed that the fusion of the benzothieno ring is more effective at extending conjugation than simple attachment of the 2-(methylthio)phenyl substituent, which presumably results from conformational restriction. Compared with the corresponding unstrained SPh-BODIPY and BSPh-BODIPY, which contain one and two 2-(methylthio)phenyl groups at the β-position, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY display red shifted absorption, increased absorptivity, and fluorescence efficiency. Furthermore, the ring fusion is also helpful to increase stability of the formed cation in BBT-BODIPY. Thus, BBT-BODIPY exhibits very intriguing properties, such as intense absorption and emission in the red region, very sharp emission spectra, and reversible oxidation and reduction potentials.

Abstract
Two-dimensional polymeric nanosheets have recently gained much attention, particularly top-down nanosheets such as graphene and metal chalcogenides originating from bulk-layered mother materials. Although molecule-based bottom-up nanosheets manufactured directly from molecular components can exhibit greater structural diversity than top-down nanosheets, the bottom-up nanosheets reported thus far lack useful functionalities. Here we show the design and synthesis of a bottom-up nanosheet featuring a photoactive bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complex motif. A liquid/liquid interfacial synthesis between a three-way dipyrrin ligand and zinc(II) ions results in a multi-layer nanosheet, whereas an air/liquid interfacial reaction produces a single-layer or few-layer nanosheet with domain sizes of >10 μm on one side. The bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) metal complex nanosheet is easy to deposit on various substrates using the Langmuir-Schäfer process. The nanosheet deposited on a transparent SnO2 electrode functions as a photoanode in a photoelectric conversion system, and is thus the first photofunctional bottom-up nanosheet.

Abstract
The titled coordination polymers feature crystallization, single wire exfoliation, processability, and applicability to photoelectric and thermoelectric conversion systems.
One-dimensional coordination polymers (1D-CPs) tend either to dissociate into constitutive ligands and metals readily in solution, or to aggregate randomly and amorphously, which prevents them from widespread application. In the present research, 1D-CPs comprising bridging dipyrrin ligands and divalent metal ions (Zn2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+) are synthesized. A liquid/liquid interfacial reaction gives rise to single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis: A dichloromethane solution of the ligand is layered with aqueous metal(ii) acetate, such that the coordination reaction proceeds at the liquid/liquid interface. Isolated single fibers of the zinc coordination polymer may be exfoliated from the single crystal or bulk solid upon ultrasonication. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) detects the isolated fibers with lengths of more than several μm. The exfoliated 1D-CP wires feature good processability, realizing a conjugate with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and a thin film on a transparent SnO2 electrode. The processed materials show electric conversion ability: For example, the modified SnO2 electrode serves as a photoanode for a photoelectric conversion system. The designability and tunability of the present 1D-CPs is demonstrated by a ligand modification, affording a luminescent property and an extension of the photoelectric conversion response to longer wavelengths.

Abstract
A strategy for the conversion of homometallic coordination networks into mixed metal-organic frameworks (MM'MOFs) is proposed. Ni(II) complexes of dipyrrin (dpm) ligands bearing peripheral pyridyl or imidazolyl units have been shown to self-assemble into coordination polymers with the metal cation in an octahedral environment coordinated to two bis-pyrrolic chelates and two neutral monodentate coordinating units such as pyridyl or imidazolyl moieties. Taking advantage of the chelate effect, the two monodentate units may be replaced by a diimine ligand leading to the disassembly of the networks by the formation of discrete soluble complexes. The latter can be employed as metallatectons for the construction of heterometallic architectures upon reaction with a secondary metal salt. This approach was applied using either 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) as chelates leading to a series of mono- and binuclear metallatectons of the (phen)Ni(dpm)2 and (bpm)[Ni(dpm)2]2 type. Subsequent assembly with CdCl2 afforded either interpenetrated 2D grid-type architectures or 3D MM'MOFs.

Abstract
The effective and efficient removal of the BF2 moiety from F-BODIPY derivatives has been achieved using two common Brønsted acids; treatment with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or methanolic hydrogen chloride (HCl) followed by work-up with Ambersep(®) 900 resin (hydroxide form) effects this conversion in near-quantitative yields. Compared to existing methods, these conditions are relatively mild and operationally simple, requiring only reaction at room temperature for six hours (TFA) or overnight (HCl).

Abstract
Benzenehexapyrrole-α,ω-dialdehyde, composed of a pair of formyltripyrrole units with a 1,3-phenylene linker, was metallated to give dinuclear single-stranded helicates. X-ray studies of the bis-nickel(II) complex showed a helical C2 form with a pair of helical-metal coordination planes of a 3N+O donor set. The terminal aldehyde was readily converted into the imine by optically active amines, whereby helix-sense bias was induced. Bis-nickel(II) and bis-palladium(II) complexes of the benzenehexapyrrole-α,ω-diimines were studied to show that an enantiomer pair of the helical C2 form are interchanged by slow flipping of each coordination plane and fast rotation around the C(benzene)C(pyrrole) bond. The helical screw in the bis-nickel(II) complexes was biased to one side in more than 95 % diastereoselectivity, which was achieved by using a variety of optically active amines, such as (R)-1-cyclohexylethylamine, (S)-1- phenylethylamine, L-Phe(OEt) (Phe=phenylalanine), and (R)-valinol. The nickel complexes showed much better diastereoselectivity than the corresponding palladium complexes.

Abstract
A tetrapyrrolic macrocycle containing ethenylene and dioxyphenylene bridges was obtained through the reaction of a dipyrrin-DDQ adduct with triethylamine. The structure of the macrocycle was elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The macrocycle exhibited solvent-dependent absorption spectra due to intramolecular charge transfer interactions.

Abstract
The development of new functional fluorescent dyes has attracted great attention. Herein we have described a novel strategy to design a unique type of cyanine dyes by attaching two indolium moieties at the α-positions of the pyrrole core. The new type of cyanine dyes is named as PyCy fluorophores. Importantly, PyCy dyes can exhibit an exceptional feature, fluorescence turn-on response at pH varying from acidic to near-neutral conditions, and a ratiometric fluorescence response at pH varying from near-neutral to basic conditions. By taking advantage of the fluorescence turn-on response of PyCy2 at pH varying from acidic to near-neutral conditions and emission properties of PyCy2, we have demonstrated that a small-molecule fluorescent probe can image pH variations in living cells. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that PyCy2 can sense real-time pH changes under alkaline conditions induced by enzymes based on the ratiometric fluorescence response of PyCy2 at pH varying from near-neutral to basic conditions. We expect that the new design strategy for PyCy fluorophores may prompt the development of a wide variety of cyanine derivatives with desirable properties.
