Abstract
Combined CSD analysis and theoretical calculations show the importance of the polarizability in chalcogen bonding interactions. We provide evidence that the Lewis base has a preference in some cases for the σ-hole that is opposite to the more polarizable group instead of the more electron withdrawing one.

Abstract
A series of push-pull heterocyclic N,N-diphenylhydrazones were prepared to study the effect of structural modifications (different π-spacers and electron-withdrawing groups) on the optical (linear and nonlinear) and electronic properties of the molecules. The photovoltaic response of dye-sensitized solar cells assembled using nanocrystalline titania photosensitized with the synthesized dyes was also studied. These heterocyclic push-pull conjugated dyes involve N,N-diphenylhydrazones as electron donors linked to bithiophene or thieno[3,2-b]thiophene spacers and were functionalized with carboxylic acid, cyanoacetic acid, or dicyanovinyl acceptor groups. A combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, Vilsmeier formylation, and condensation reactions was used to synthesize the intermediates and final products. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-DFT calculations were used to obtain information on conformation, electronic structure, and electron distribution, both for the free dyes and those adsorbed on TiO2. The results of this multidisciplinary study indicate that dyes 5b and 6b have the strongest second-order nonlinear optical response with hyperpolarizability values in the range of β = 2330 × 10-30 to 2750 × 10-30 esu, whereas photovoltaic power conversion efficiencies reach values in the range of 0.7-3.0% for dyes 5a-b and 7c and were enhanced by coadsorbing deoxycholic acid (0.8-5.1%).

Abstract
An efficient two-step palladium catalyzed synthesis of furo[3,2-b:4,5-b']diindoles, a hitherto unknown symmetrical heterocyclic core structure, was developed. The synthesis is based on a regioselective Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction of tetrabromofuran and subsequent double N-arylation. Selected compounds were studied with regard to their optical and electrochemical properties. The compounds show fluorescence with high quantum yields and non-reversible oxidation events. The compounds possess similar HOMO-LUMO band gaps compared to their sulfur and nitrogen analogs. Variation of the substituents hardly affects the HOMO-LUMO gap, but allows for some fine-tuning of the electron affinity and ionization potential as well as quantum yields. The compounds prepared represent interesting candidates for the development of organic electronic materials.

Abstract
An iodine-mediated preparation of ortho-quinone methides (o-QMs) from ortho-hydroxybenzyl alcohols by a C-O bond scission strategy is described. The in situ generated o-QMs were then employed for C-S bond formation by thio-Michael addition of thiols to provide the ortho-hydroxybenzyl thioethers (o-HBT) in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract
A stable crystalline 2,5-digermaselenophene was synthesized. In contrast to hitherto reported selenophenes, this digermaselenophene exhibits a trans-pyramidalized structure, which is due to its electronic properties. The practical utility of this 2,5-digermaselenophene is reflected in its ability to activate dihydrogen and acetylene at room temperature in the absence of a transition-metal complex, and this behavior can be rationalized on the basis of its physicochemical properties, which are characterized by considerable electron-donating and -accepting abilities.

Abstract
The sulfur-containing nine-membered heterocycle thiacyclononene (TN) was evaluated as a new type of end-capping group for π-conjugated systems. A systematic study on TN-capped α-oligothiophenes (TNnTs; n=4-7) revealed that the capping with TN, which adopts a bent conformation, imparts the resulting oligothiophenes with drastically increased solubility at approximately 140 °C and high electrochemical stability, whereas the electronic structure remains virtually unperturbed. The even-numbered oligothiophenes TN4T and TN6T form characteristic offset herringbone-type packing structures on account of the steric repulsion between the TN rings and the presence of intermolecular nonbonding S⋅⋅⋅S interactions. This packing mode in combination with the high solubility enabled the solution-process fabrication of field-effect transistors based on TN6T, which exhibited a high performance without degradation even upon exposure to air.

Abstract
The application of our newly developed B-C coupling method by catalytic Si/B exchange is demonstrated for the synthesis of a series of triarylboranes (1), monodisperse thienyl- and furylborane dimers (2) and trimers (9), extended oligomers (3) and polymers (3'), as well as mixed (oligo)thienyl-/furylboranes. The structures of 1 aaTip , 1 bbTip , and 2 bbbMes* , determined by X-ray crystallography, reveal largely coplanar hetarene rings and BR3 environments, which are most pronounced in the furylborane species. Photophysical investigations, supported by TD-DFT calculations, revealed pronounced π-electron delocalization over the hetarene backbones including the boron centers. With an extended series of derivatives of varying chain lengths available, we were able to determine the effective conjugation lengths (ECL) of poly(thienylborane)s and poly(furylborane)s, which have been reached with the highest-molecular-weight derivatives of our study. Through variation of the furan-to-thiophene ratio, the photophysical properties of these materials are effectively modulated. Significantly, higher furan contents lead to considerably increased fluorescence intensities. Compounds 1 aaTip , 1 bbTip , and 3 aTip showed the ability to bind fluoride anions. The binding process is signaled by a distinct change in their optical absorption characteristics, thus rendering these materials attractive targets for sensory applications.

Abstract
Two-photon microscopy imaging has been widely applied in biological imaging, but the development of two-photon absorption probes is obviously lagging behind in the development of imaging technology. In this paper, a two-photon fluorescent probe (1) based on pyrimidine 2-isothiocyanate has been designed and synthesized through a simple method for two-photon biological imaging. Probe 1 was able to couple effectively with the amino groups on biomolecules. To verify the reactivity of the isothiocyanate group on probe 1 and the amine groups on the biomolecules, d-glucosamine was chosen as a model biomolecule to conjugate with probe 1. The result showed that probe 1 could effectively conjugate with d-glucosamine to synthesize probe 2, and the yield of probe 2 was 83%. After conjugating with d-glucosamine, linear absorption spectra, single-photon fluorescence spectra, and two-photon fluorescence spectra of probes 1 and 2 did not present significant changes. Probes 1 and 2 exhibited high fluorescence quantum yields (0.71-0.79) in toluene and chloroform. They also exhibited different photo-physical properties in solvents with different polarities. The two-photon absorption cross-section of probe 1 was 953 GM in toluene. In addition, probe 1 could be effectively conjugated with transferrin, and the conjugated probe (Tf-1) could be transported into Hep G2 cells through a receptor-mediated process for biological imaging. These results demonstrate that such probes are expected to have great potential applications in two-photon fluorescence bioimaging.

Abstract
A divergent synthesis of thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-alkynes, 1,3-dienes and allenes via regioselective nucleophilic addition of sulfur nucleophiles to 2-trifluoromethyl-1,3-conjugated enynes was developed. The addition patterns depend on the type of enyne, sulfur nucleophile and reaction conditions used. 1,4-Addition leading to thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-allenes was realized when enynes possessing electron-withdrawing aryl groups on the alkyne moiety were used as reaction partners and alkanethiols were used as nucleophiles, whereas solvent-controlled construction of thioether-functionalized 1,3-dienes and alkynes was realized, respectively, via a 3,4-addition pattern or 1,2-addition pattern if thiophenols were applied as nucleophiles. The three types of compounds containing both sulfur and fluorine elements are valuable building blocks for synthesis of multifunctional fluorinated vinyl sulfides and thiophene derivatives. A divergent synthesis of thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-alkynes, 1,3-dienes and allenes viaregioselective nucleophilic addition of sulfur nucleophiles to 2-trifluoromethyl-1,3-conjugated enynes was developed.![]()

Abstract
The effect of anchoring groups on the optical and electrochemical properties of triphenylamine-thienothiophenes, and on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs photosensitized with the prepared dyes, was studied using newly synthesized compounds with cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3-acetic acid groups. Precursor aldehydes were synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling, whereas Knoevenagel condensation of these with 2-cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3-acetic acid afforded the final push-pull dyes. A comprehensive photophysical study was performed in solution and in the solid state. The femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra for the synthesized dyes were obtained following photoexcitation in solution and for the dyes adsorbed to TiO2 mesoporous films. Information on conformation, electronic structure, and electron distribution was obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Triphenylamine-thienothiophene functionalized with a cyanoacetic acid anchoring group displayed the highest conversion efficiency (3.68%) as the dye sensitizer in nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells. Coadsorption studies were performed for this dye with the ruthenium-based N719 dye, and they showed dye power conversion efficiencies enhanced by 20-64%. The best cell performance obtained with the coadsorbed N719 and cyanoacetic dye showed an efficiency of 6.05%.

Abstract
Bottom-gate bottom-contact organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) were prepared with four novel star-shaped conjugated molecules containing a fused thieno[3,2-b]thiophene moiety incorporated either in the core and/or at the periphery of the molecular framework. The molecules were soluble in CS₂, allowing for solution-processing techniques to be employed. OTFTs with different channel geometries were characterized in both air and vacuum in order to compare environmental effects on performance. Blending the small molecules with poly(styrene), an insulating polymer, facilitated the formation of an even semiconducting film, resulting in an order of magnitude increase in device mobility. The highest field-effect mobilities were in air and on the order of 10-3 cm²/Vs for three of the four molecules, with a maximum mobility of 9.2 × 10-3 cm²/Vs achieved for the most conjugated small molecule. This study explores the relationship between processing conditions and OTFT devices performance for four different molecules within this new family of materials, resulting in a deeper insight into their potential as solution-processable semiconductors.

Abstract
Thiophene-based π-conjugated organic small molecules and polymers are the research subject of significant current interest owing to their potential use as organic semiconductors in material chemistry. Despite simple and similar molecular structures, the hitherto reported properties of thiophene-based organic semiconductors are rather diverse. Design of high performance organic semiconducting materials requires a thorough understanding of inter- and intra-molecular interactions, solid-state packing, and the influence of both factors on the charge carrier transport. In this chapter, thiophene-based organic semiconductors, which are classified in terms of their chemical structures and their structure-property relationships, are addressed for the potential applications as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).
