Isolated Single-Atom Pd Sites in Intermetallic Nanostructures: High Catalytic Selectivity for Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Topological self-template directed synthesis of multi-shelled intermetallic Ni3Ga hollow microspheres for the selective hydrogenation of alkyne

Multi-shelled hollow structured materials featuring large void volumes and high specific surface areas are very promising for a variety of applications. However, controllable synthesis of multi-shelled hollow structured intermetallic compounds remains a formidable challenge due to the high annealing temperature commonly required for the formation of intermetallic phases. Here, a topological self-template strategy was developed to solve this problem. Using this strategy, we prepared well-defined multi-shelled intermetallic Ni3Ga hollow microspheres (Ni3Ga-MIHMs) as disclosed by the HAADF-STEM, HRTEM, and EDS characterizations, and the BET specific surface areas of them measured as much as 153.4 m2 g-1. XRD and EXAFS spectral characterizations revealed the atomically ordered intermetallic phase nature of the Ni3Ga-MIHMs. The selective hydrogenation of acetylene catalytic evaluation results further demonstrated excellent catalytic properties of the Ni3Ga-MIHMs, which results from the more energetically facile reaction pathway for acetylene hydrogenation and ethylene desorption over it as revealed by DFT calculations. Besides, this strategy is also extendable to synthesize other multi-shelled intermetallic Ni3Sn4 hollow microspheres, and is expected to open up new opportunities for rational design and preparation of novel structured and highly efficient intermetallics.

Well-Defined Rhodium-Gallium Catalytic Sites in a Metal-Organic Framework: Promoter-Controlled Selectivity in Alkyne Semihydrogenation to E-Alkenes

Promoters are ubiquitous in industrial heterogeneous catalysts. The wider roles of promoters in accelerating catalysis and/or controlling selectivity are, however, not well understood. A model system has been developed where a heterobimetallic active site comprising an active metal (Rh) and a promoter ion (Ga) is preassembled and delivered onto a metal-organic framework (MOF) support, NU-1000. The Rh-Ga sites in NU-1000 selectively catalyze the hydrogenation of acyclic alkynes to E-alkenes. The overall stereoselectivity is complementary to the well-known Lindlar's catalyst, which generates Z-alkenes. The role of the Ga in promoting this unusual selectivity is evidenced by the lack of semihydrogenation selectivity when Ga is absent and only Rh is present in the active site.

Harnessing the Wisdom in Colloidal Chemistry to Make Stable Single-Atom Catalysts

Research on single-atom catalysts (SACs), or atomically dispersed catalysts, has been quickly gaining momentum over the past few years. Although the unique electronic structure of singly dispersed atoms enables uncommon-sometimes exceptional-activities and selectivities for various catalytic applications, developing reliable and general procedures for preparing stable, active SACs in particular for applications under reductive conditions remains a major issue. Herein, the challenges associated with the synthesis of SACs are highlighted semiquantitatively and three stabilization techniques inspired by colloidal science including steric, ligand, and electrostatic stabilization are proposed. Some recent examples are discussed in detail to showcase the power of these strategies in the synthesis of stable SACs without compromising catalytic activity. The substantial further potential of steric, ligand, and electrostatic effects for developing SACs is emphasized. A perspective is given to point out opportunities and remaining obstacles, with special attention given to electrostatic stabilization where little is done so far. The stabilization strategies presented herein have a wide applicability in the synthesis of a series of new SACs with improved performances.

Highly-Ordered PdIn Intermetallic Nanostructures Obtained from Heterobimetallic Acetate Complex: Formation and Catalytic Properties in Diphenylacetylene Hydrogenation

Formation of PdIn intermetallic nanoparticles supported on α-Al₂O₃ was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and hydrogen temperature-programmed desorption (H₂-TPD) methods. The metals were loaded as heterobimetallic Pd(μ-O₂CMe)₄In(O₂CMe) complex to ensure intimate contact between Pd and In. Reduction in H₂ at 200 °C resulted in Pd-rich PdIn alloy as evidenced by XRD and the disappearance of Pd hydride. A minor amount of Pd₁In₁ intermetallic phase appeared after reduction at 200 °C and its formation was accomplished at 400 °C. Neither monometallic Pd or in nor other intermetallic structures were found after reduction at 400⁻600 °C. Catalytic performance of Pd₁In₁/α-Al₂O₃ was studied in the selective liquid-phase diphenylacetylene (DPA) hydrogenation. It was found that the reaction rate of undesired alkene hydrogenation is strongly reduced on Pd₁In₁ nanoparticles enabling effective kinetic control of the hydrogenation, and the catalyst demonstrated excellent selectivity to alkene.

Single-atom catalyst: a rising star for green synthesis of fine chemicals

The green synthesis of fine chemicals calls for a new generation of efficient and robust catalysts. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which all metal species are atomically dispersed on a solid support, and which often consist of well-defined mononuclear active sites, are expected to bridge homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for liquid-phase organic transformations. This review summarizes major advances in the SAC-catalysed green synthesis of fine chemicals in the past several years, with a focus on the catalytic activity, selectivity and reusability of SACs in various organic reactions. The relationship between catalytic performance and the active site structure is discussed in terms of the valence state, coordination environment and anchoring chemistry of single atoms to the support, in an effort to guide the rational design of SACs in this special area, which has traditionally been dominated by homogeneous catalysis. Finally, the challenges remaining in this research area are discussed and possible future research directions are proposed.

PDA-assisted formation of ordered intermetallic CoPt3 catalysts with enhanced oxygen reduction activity and stability

Structurally ordered intermetallic alloys with definite composition and distinct structure show great potential as electro-catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their fabrication with small particle size remains a challenge since grain growth caused by high temperature annealing is unavoidable for the formation of the ordered phase. Here we propose an effective space-confined strategy to prepare an intermetallic alloy with small size (CoPt3/C-S) through annealing of the disordered Pt-Co alloy coated with polydopamine (PDA). The CoPt3/C-S intermetallic catalyst exhibits over 7-fold higher ORR activity and comparable stability compared to large intermetallic nanoparticles (CoPt3/C-L) prepared by direct heat-treatment without PDA. The superior ORR performance of the CoPt3/C-S catalyst can be attributed to the abundant active sites and unsaturated coordinated bonds caused by its special electronic structure, as proved by XPS and XAS tests. This work not only proposes a feasible synthesis route for small intermetallic nanoparticles but also provides a valid strategy to improve the ORR performance of ordered intermetallic catalysts.

Recent Progress on MOF-Derived Heteroatom-Doped Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the core reaction of numerous sustainable energy-conversion technologies such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is crucial to develop a cost-effective, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for ORR to overcome the sluggish kinetics of four electrons pathway. In recent years, the carbon-based electrocatalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention and have been shown to exhibit superior catalytic activity and excellent intrinsic properties such as large surface area, large pore volume, uniform pore distribution, and tunable chemical structure. Here in this review, the development of MOF-derived heteroatom-doped carbon-based electrocatalysts, including non-metal (such as N, S, B, and P) and metal (such as Fe and Co) doped carbon materials, is summarized. It furthermore, it is demonstrated that the enhancement of ORR performance is associated with favorably well-designed porous structure, large surface area, and high-tensity active sites. Finally, the future perspectives of carbon-based electrocatalysts for ORR are provided with an emphasis on the development of a clear mechanism of MOF-derived non-metal-doped electrocatalysts and certain metal-doped electrocatalysts.

Applying MOF+ technique for in situ preparation of a hybrid material for hydrogenation reaction

We demonstrate herein the preparation of a hybrid material for catalytic purpose by our recently developed MOF⁺ method. Impressively, the results show that the resultant catalyst displays superior catalytic performances for hydrogenation on olefin and selective semihydrogenation on phenylacetylene.

Copper-Based Intermetallic Electride Catalyst for Chemoselective Hydrogenation Reactions

The development of transition metal intermetallic compounds, in which active sites are incorporated in lattice frameworks, has great potential for modulating the local structure and the electronic properties of active sites, and enhancing the catalytic activity and stability. Here we report that a new copper-based intermetallic electride catalyst, LaCu_0.67Si_1.33, in which Cu sites activated by anionic electrons with low work function are atomically dispersed in the lattice framework and affords selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes with above 40-times higher turnover frequencies (TOFs up to 5084 h^-1) than well-studied metal-loaded catalysts. Kinetic analysis utilizing isotope effect reveals that the cleavage of the H-H bond is the rate-determining step. Surprisingly, the high carrier density and low work function (LWF) properties of LaCu_0.67Si_1.33 enable the activation of hydrogen molecules with extreme low activation energy (E_a = 14.8 kJ·mol^-1). Furthermore, preferential adsorption of nitroarenes via a nitro group is achieved by high oxygen affinity of LaCu_0.67Si_1.33 surface, resulting in high chemoselectivity. The present efficient catalyst can further trigger the hydrogenation of other oxygen-containing functional groups such as aldehydes and ketones with high activities. These findings demonstrate that the transition metals incorporated in the specific lattice site function as catalytically active centers and surpass the conventional metal-loaded catalysts in activity and stability.
