Electronic liquid-crystal phases of a doped Mott insulator

Hysteresis and noise from electronic nematicity in high-temperature superconductors

An electron nematic is a translationally invariant state which spontaneously breaks the discrete rotational symmetry of a host crystal. In a clean square lattice, the electron nematic has two preferred orientations, while dopant disorder favors one or the other orientations locally. In this way, the electron nematic in a host crystal maps to the random field Ising model. Since the electron nematic has anisotropic conductivity, we associate each Ising configuration with a resistor network and use what is known about the random field Ising model to predict new ways to test for local electronic nematic order (nematicity) using noise and hysteresis. In particular, we have uncovered a remarkably robust linear relation between the orientational order and the resistance anisotropy which holds over a wide range of circumstances.

Complexity in Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems

A wide variety of experimental results and theoretical investigations in recent years have convincingly demonstrated that several transition metal oxides and other materials have dominant states that are not spatially homogeneous. This occurs in cases in which several physical interactions-spin, charge, lattice, and/or orbital-are simultaneously active. This phenomenon causes interesting effects, such as colossal magnetoresistance, and it also appears crucial to understand the high-temperature superconductors. The spontaneous emergence of electronic nanometer-scale structures in transition metal oxides, and the existence of many competing states, are properties often associated with complex matter where nonlinearities dominate, such as soft materials and biological systems. This electronic complexity could have potential consequences for applications of correlated electronic materials, because not only charge (semiconducting electronic), or charge and spin (spintronics) are of relevance, but in addition the lattice and orbital degrees of freedom are active, leading to giant responses to small perturbations. Moreover, several metallic and insulating phases compete, increasing the potential for novel behavior.

Magic doping fractions for high-temperature superconductors

We report hole-doping dependence of the in-plane resistivity rho(ab) in a cuprate superconductor La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4, carefully examined using a series of high-quality single crystals. Our detailed measurements find a tendency towards charge ordering at particular rational hole-doping fractions of 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, and 3/16. This observation appears to suggest a specific form of charge order and is most consistent with the recent theoretical prediction of the checkerboard-type ordering of the Cooper pairs at rational doping fractions x = (2m+1)/2n, with integers m and n.

Electronically soft phases in manganites

The phenomenon of colossal magnetoresistance in manganites is generally agreed to be a result of competition between crystal phases with different electronic, magnetic and structural order; a competition which can be strong enough to cause phase separation between metallic ferromagnetic and insulating charge-modulated states. Nevertheless, closer inspection of phase diagrams in many manganites reveals complex phases where the two order parameters of magnetism and charge modulation unexpectedly coexist. Here we show that such experiments can be naturally explained within a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. In contrast to models where phase separation originates from disorder or as a strain-induced kinetic phenomenon, we argue that magnetic and charge modulation coexist in new thermodynamic phases. This leads to a rich diagram of equilibrium phases, qualitatively similar to those seen experimentally. The success of this model argues for a fundamental reinterpretation of the nature of charge modulation in these materials, from a localized to a more extended 'charge-density wave' picture. The same symmetry considerations that favour textured coexistence of charge and magnetic order may apply to many electronic systems with competing phases. The resulting 'electronically soft' phases of matter with incommensurate, inhomogeneous and mixed order may be general phenomena in correlated systems.

Excitation spectrum of d-wave Fermi surface deformation

Several instabilities competing with the d-wave singlet pairing were proposed for high-Tc cuprates. One of them is the d-wave Fermi surface deformation (dFSD), which is generated by forward scattering. In this Letter, correlation functions of the dFSD are calculated within the random phase approximation. In the normal state, the excitation spectrum shows a low energy peak, which smoothly connects to critical fluctuations of the dFSD at lower temperature. The competition with the d-wave pairing, however, blocks the critical fluctuations. The whole spectral weight is transferred to high energy and a pronounced peak appears there in the d-wave pairing state. This peak is an overdamped collective mode of the dFSD and can grow to become a resonance mode at moderate finite wave vectors.

Low-temperature broken-symmetry phases of spiral antiferromagnets

We study Heisenberg antiferromagnets with nearest- (J1) and third- (J3) neighbor exchange on the square lattice. In the limit of spin S-->infinity, there is a zero temperature (T) Lifshitz point at J(3)=1/4J(1), with long-range spiral spin order at T=0 for J3>1/4J(1). We present classical Monte Carlo simulations and a theory for T>0 crossovers near the Lifshitz point: spin rotation symmetry is restored at any T>0, but there is a broken lattice reflection symmetry for 0< or =T<T(c) approximately (J3-1/4J(1))S2. The transition at T=T(c) is consistent with Ising universality. We also discuss the quantum phase diagram for finite S.

Imaging nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity in the lightly doped Mott insulator Ca(2-x)NaxCuO2Cl2

The spatial variation of electronic states was imaged in the lightly doped Mott insulator Ca(2-x)NaxCuO2Cl2 using scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy. We observed nanoscale domains with a high local density of states within an insulating background. The observed domains have a characteristic length scale of 2 nm (approximately 4-5a, a: lattice constant) with preferred orientations along the tetragonal [100] direction. We argue that such spatially inhomogeneous electronic states are inherent to slightly doped Mott insulators and play an important role for the insulator to metal transition.

Melting of bosonic stripes

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to determine the finite temperature phase diagram and to investigate the thermal and quantum melting of stripe phases in a two-dimensional hard-core boson model. At half filling and low temperatures the stripes melt at a first order transition. In the doped system, the melting transitions of the smectic phase at high temperatures and the superfluid smectic (supersolid) phase at low temperatures are either very weakly first order, or of second order with no clear indications for an intermediate nematic phase.

Two-dimensional geometry of spin excitations in the high-transition-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x

The fundamental building block of the copper oxide superconductors is a Cu4O4 square plaquette. The plaquettes in most of these materials are slightly distorted to form a rectangular lattice, for which an influential theory predicts that high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) superconductivity is nucleated in 'stripes' aligned along one of the axes. This theory received strong support from experiments that indicated a one-dimensional character for the magnetic excitations in the high-T(c) material YBa2Cu3O6.6 (ref. 4). Here we report neutron scattering data on 'untwinned' YBa2Cu3O6+x crystals, in which the orientation of the rectangular lattice is maintained throughout the entire volume. Contrary to the earlier claim, we demonstrate that the geometry of the magnetic fluctuations is two-dimensional. Rigid stripe arrays therefore appear to be ruled out over a wide range of doping levels in YBa2Cu3O6+x, but the data may be consistent with liquid-crystalline stripe order. The debate about stripes has therefore been reopened.

A ‘checkerboard’ electronic crystal state in lightly hole-doped Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2

The phase diagram of hole-doped copper oxides shows four different electronic phases existing at zero temperature. Familiar among these are the Mott insulator, high-transition-temperature superconductor and metallic phases. A fourth phase, of unknown identity, occurs at light doping along the zero-temperature bound of the 'pseudogap' regime. This regime is rich in peculiar electronic phenomena, prompting numerous proposals that it contains some form of hidden electronic order. Here we present low-temperature electronic structure imaging studies of a lightly hole-doped copper oxide: Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2. Tunnelling spectroscopy (at energies |E| > 100 meV) reveals electron extraction probabilities greatly exceeding those for injection, as anticipated for a doped Mott insulator. However, for |E| < 100 meV, the spectrum exhibits a V-shaped energy gap centred on E = 0. States within this gap undergo intense spatial modulations, with the spatial correlations of a four CuO2-unit-cell square 'checkerboard', independent of energy. Intricate atomic-scale electronic structure variations also exist within the checkerboard. These data are consistent with an unanticipated crystalline electronic state, possibly the hidden electronic order, existing in the zero-temperature pseudogap regime of Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2.

Magnon-hole scattering and charge order in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41

The magnon thermal conductivity kappa(mag) of the hole-doped spin ladders in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 has been investigated at low doping levels x. The analysis of kappa(mag) reveals a strong doping and temperature dependence of the magnon mean free path l(mag), which is a local probe for the interaction of magnons with the doped holes in the ladders. In particular, this novel approach to studying charge degrees of freedom via spin excitations shows that charge ordering of the holes in the ladders leads to a freezing out of magnon-hole scattering processes.

Quantum phase transitions in the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta

To elucidate a quantum phase transition (QPT) in Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6+delta), we measure charge and heat transport properties at very low temperatures and examine the following characteristics for a wide range of doping: normal-state resistivity anisotropy under 58 T, temperature dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity kappa(ab), and the magnetic-field dependence of kappa(ab). It turns out that all of them show signatures of a QPT at the 1/8 hole doping. Together with the recent normal-state Hall measurements under 58 T that signified the existence of a QPT at optimum doping, the present results indicate that there are two QPTs in the superconducting doping regime of this material.

An explanation for a universality of transition temperatures in families of copper oxide superconductors

A remarkable mystery of the copper oxide high-transition-temperature (T(c)) superconductors is the dependence of T(c) on the number of CuO2 layers, n, in the unit cell of a crystal. In a given family of these superconductors, T(c) rises with the number of layers, reaching a peak at n = 3, and then declines: the result is a bell-shaped curve. Despite the ubiquity of this phenomenon, it is still poorly understood and attention has instead been mainly focused on the properties of a single CuO2 plane. Here we show that the quantum tunnelling of Cooper pairs between the layers simply and naturally explains the experimental results, when combined with the recently quantified charge imbalance of the layers and the latest notion of a competing order nucleated by this charge imbalance that suppresses superconductivity. We calculate the bell-shaped curve and show that, if materials can be engineered so as to minimize the charge imbalance as n increases, T(c) can be raised further.

Incipient order in the t-J model at high temperatures

We analyze the high-temperature behavior of the susceptibilities towards a number of possible ordered states in the t-J-V model using the high-temperature series expansion. From all diagrams with up to ten edges, reliable results are obtained down to temperatures of order J, or (with some optimism) to J/2. In the unphysical regime, t<J, large superconducting susceptibilities are found which, moreover, increase with decreasing temperatures, but for t>J, these susceptibilities are small and decreasing with decreasing temperature; this suggests that the t-J model does not support high-temperature superconductivity. We also find modest evidence of a tendency toward nematic and d-density wave orders.

Inhomogeneous electronic structure probed by spin-echo experiments in the electron doped high-Tc superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y

63Cu nuclear magnetic resonance spin-echo decay rate (T-12) measurements are reported for the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of Pr(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-y) in a magnetic field B(0)=9 T over the temperature range 2<T<200 K. The spin-echo decay rate is temperature dependent for T<55 K and has a substantial dependence on the radio frequency (rf) pulse parameters below T approximately 25 K. This dependence indicates that T-12 is strongly effected by a local magnetic field distribution that can be modified by the rf pulses, including ones that are not at the nuclear Larmor frequency. The low-temperature results are consistent with the formation of a static inhomogeneous electronic structure that couples to the rf fields of the pulses.

Production of ultracold, polar RbCs* molecules via photoassociation

We have produced ultracold, polar RbCs* molecules via photoassociation in a laser-cooled mixture of Rb and Cs atoms. Using a model of the RbCs* molecular interaction which reproduces the observed rovibrational structure, we infer decay rates in our experiments into deeply bound X(1)Sigma(+) ground-state RbCs vibrational levels as high as 5 x 10(5) s(-1) per level. Population in such deeply bound levels could be efficiently transferred to the vibrational ground state using a single stimulated Raman transition, opening the possibility to create large samples of stable, ultracold polar molecules.

Quantum melting of the charge-density-wave state in 1T-TiSe2

We report a Raman scattering study of low-temperature, pressure-induced melting of the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of 1T-TiSe2. Our measurements reveal that the collapse of the CDW state occurs in three stages: (i) For P<5 kbar, the pressure dependence of the CDW amplitude mode energies and intensities are indicative of a "crystalline" CDW regime; (ii) for 5<P<25 kbar, there is a decrease in the CDW amplitude mode energies and intensities with increasing pressure that suggests a regime in which the CDW softens, and exhibits enhanced fluctuations; and (iii) for P>25 kbar, the absence of amplitude modes reveals a metallic regime in which the CDW has melted.

Signature of optimal doping in Hall-effect measurements on a high-temperature superconductor

High-temperature superconductivity is achieved by doping copper oxide insulators with charge carriers. The density of carriers in conducting materials can be determined from measurements of the Hall voltage--the voltage transverse to the flow of the electrical current that is proportional to an applied magnetic field. In common metals, this proportionality (the Hall coefficient) is robustly temperature independent. This is in marked contrast to the behaviour seen in high-temperature superconductors when in the 'normal' (resistive) state; the departure from expected behaviour is a key signature of the unconventional nature of the normal state, the origin of which remains a central controversy in condensed matter physics. Here we report the evolution of the low-temperature Hall coefficient in the normal state as the carrier density is increased, from the onset of superconductivity and beyond (where superconductivity has been suppressed by a magnetic field). Surprisingly, the Hall coefficient does not vary monotonically with doping but rather exhibits a sharp change at the optimal doping level for superconductivity. This observation supports the idea that two competing ground states underlie the high-temperature superconducting phase.

Coexistence of periodic modulation of quasiparticle states and superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

In this article we show, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, the existence of static striped density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta in zero field. This modulation is aligned with the Cu-O bonds, with a periodicity of four lattice constants, and exhibits features characteristic of a two-dimensional system of line objects. We further show that the density of states modulation manifests itself as a shift of states from above to below the superconducting gap. The fact that a single energy scale (i.e., the gap) appears for both superconductivity and stripes suggests that these two effects have the same origin.

Anisotropic electromagnetic response of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 within the CuO2 planes

Using infrared spectroscopy, we show that spin self-organization in untwinned La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) crystals has profound consequences for the dynamical conductivity sigma(omega). The electronic response of CuO2 planes acquires significant anisotropy in the spin ordered state with enhancement of the conductivity along the direction of the diagonal spin stripes by up to a factor of 2. An examination of the anisotropic response indicates that the diagonal spin texture in weakly doped LSCO is also accompanied by the modulation of charge density. The electronic response of the charge stripes is found to be gapless consistent with the hypothesis of the metallic ground state. Our experiments directly show that the striped ordered systems reveal new degrees of freedom not present in ordinary one-dimensional conductors.

Novel in-gap spin state in Zn-doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4

Low-energy spin excitations of La(1.85)Sr(0.15)Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 were studied by neutron scattering. In y=0.004, the incommensurate magnetic peaks show a well-defined "spin gap" below T(c). The magnetic signals at omega=3 meV decrease below T(c)=27 K for y=0.008, also suggesting the gap opening. At lower temperatures, however, the signal increases again, implying a novel in-gap spin state. In y=0.017, the spin gap vanishes and elastic magnetic peaks appear. These results clarify that doped Zn impurities induce the novel in-gap state, which becomes larger and more static with increasing Zn.

Soft fermi surfaces and breakdown of Fermi-liquid behavior

Electron-electron interactions can induce Fermi surface deformations which break the point-group symmetry of the lattice structure of the system. In the vicinity of such a "Pomeranchuk instability" the Fermi surface is easily deformed by anisotropic perturbations, and exhibits enhanced collective fluctuations. We show that critical Fermi surface fluctuations near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions lead to large anisotropic decay rates for single-particle excitations, which destroy Fermi-liquid behavior over the whole surface except at the Brillouin zone diagonal.

An inverse transition of magnetic domain patterns in ultrathin films

Inverse freezing and inverse melting are processes where a more symmetric phase is found at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures. Such inverse transitions are very rare. Here we report the existence of an inverse transition effect in ultrathin Fe films that are magnetized perpendicular to the film plane. The magnetization of these films is not uniform, but instead manifests itself as stripe domains with opposite perpendicular magnetization. Predictions relating to the disordering of this striped ground state in the limit of monolayer film thicknesses are controversial. Mean-field arguments predict a continuous reduction of the stripe width when the temperature is increased; other studies suggest that topological defects, such as dislocations and disclinations, might penetrate the system and induce geometrical phase transitions. We find, from scanning electron microscopy imaging, that when the temperature is increased, the low-temperature stripe domain structure transforms into a more symmetric, labyrinthine structure. However, at even higher temperatures and before the loss of magnetic order, a re-occurrence of the less symmetric stripe phase is found. Despite the widespread theoretical and experimental work on striped systems, this phase sequence and the microscopic instabilities driving it have not been observed before.

Vortex liquid crystals in anisotropic type II superconductors

In an isotropic type II superconductor in a moderate magnetic field, the transition to the normal state occurs by vortex lattice melting. In certain anisotropic cases, the vortices acquire elongated cross sections and interactions. Systems of anisotropic, interacting constituents generally exhibit liquid crystalline phases. We examine the possibility of a two step melting in homogeneous type II superconductors with anisotropic superfluid stiffness from a vortex lattice into first a vortex smectic and then a vortex nematic at high temperature and magnetic field. We find that fluctuations of the ordered phase favor an instability to an intermediate smectic-A in the absence of intrinsic pinning.

Artificial charge-modulationin atomic-scale perovskite titanate superlattices

The nature and length scales of charge screening in complex oxides are fundamental to a wide range of systems, spanning ceramic voltage-dependent resistors (varistors), oxide tunnel junctions and charge ordering in mixed-valence compounds. There are wide variations in the degree of charge disproportionation, length scale, and orientation in the mixed-valence compounds: these have been the subject of intense theoretical study, but little is known about the microscopic electronic structure. Here we have fabricated an idealized structure to examine these issues by growing atomically abrupt layers of LaTi(3+)O(3) embedded in SrTi(4+)O(3). Using an atomic-scale electron beam, we have observed the spatial distribution of the extra electron on the titanium sites. This distribution results in metallic conductivity, even though the superlattice structure is based on two insulators. Despite the chemical abruptness of the interfaces, we find that a minimum thickness of five LaTiO(3) layers is required for the centre titanium site to recover bulk-like electronic properties. This represents a framework within which the short-length-scale electronic response can be probed and incorporated in thin-film oxide heterostructures.

Metallic mean-field stripes, incommensurability, and chemical potential in cuprates

We perform a systematic slave-boson mean-field analysis of the three-band model for cuprates with first-principle parameters. Contrary to widespread belief based on earlier mean-field computations low doping stripes have a linear density close to 1/2 added hole per lattice constant. We find a dimensional crossover from 1D to 2D at doping approximately 0.1 followed by a breaking of particle-hole symmetry around doping 1/8 as doping increases. Our results explain in a simple way the behavior of the chemical potential, the magnetic incommensurability, and transport experiments as a function of doping. Bond centered and site-centered stripes become degenerate for small overdoping.

Liquid antiferromagnets in two dimensions

It is shown that, for proper symmetry of the parent lattice, antiferromagnetic order can survive in two-dimensional liquid crystals and even isotropic liquids of pointlike particles, in contradiction to what common sense might suggest. We discuss the requirements for antiferromagnetic order in the absence of translational and/or orientational lattice order. One example is the honeycomb lattice, which upon melting can form a liquid crystal with quasi-long-range orientational and antiferromagnetic order but short-range translational order. The critical properties of such systems are discussed. Finally, we draw conjectures for the three-dimensional case.

Nonuniversal ordering of spin and charge in stripe phases

We study the interplay of topological excitations in stripe phases: charge dislocations, charge loops, and spin vortices. In two dimensions these defects interact logarithmically on large distances. Using a renormalization-group analysis in the Coulomb-gas representation of these defects, we calculate the phase diagram and the critical properties of the transitions. Depending on the interaction parameters, spin and charge order can disappear at a single transition or in a sequence of two transitions (spin-charge separation). These transitions are nonuniversal with continuously varying critical exponents. We also determine the nature of the points where three phases coexist.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in beta- Na (0.33) V(2)O(5) beyond charge ordering

We report the discovery of a new superconducting phase in highly correlated 3d electron systems. The compound is beta-vanadium bronze, beta- Na0.33V 2O5, in which the charge-ordered phase collapses under hydrostatic high pressure and a pressure-induced superconducting phase appears around T(S C)=8 K, P=8 GPa. This report presents the first observation not only of superconductivity in vanadium oxides but also of a phase transition from charge ordered to superconducting on a pressure-temperature (P- T) plane. The phase diagrams seem to have universal aspects across the classes of materials. This indicates a profound physics of superconductivity in highly correlated electron systems.

Competition of static stripe and superconducting phases in La(1.48)Nd(0.4)Sr(0.12)CuO(4) controlled by pressure

We have investigated the pressure effect on T(c) and the Hall coefficient in the static stripe-ordered phase of La(1.48)Nd(0.4)Sr(0.12)CuO(4) crystal under hydrostatic pressure. We found a dramatic change of the Hall coefficient and an abrupt increase of T(c) at low pressure of about 0.1 GPa. The results are indicative of a transition from one- to two-dimensional charge transport, associated with the suppression of low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase. From the uniaxial pressure measurements it turns out that the observed critical change is induced primarily due to the in-plane compression of the CuO(2) planes which would make the pinning potential of the LTT lattice distortions weaker.

Duality between unidirectional harge-density-wave order and superconductivity

The existence of a duality between a unidirectional charge-density-wave order and a superconducting order is shown. This duality predicts the existence of a charge-density wave near a superconducting vortex, and the existence of superconductivity near a charge-density-wave dislocation.

Direct evidence for an intrinsic square vortex lattice in the overdoped high- T(c) superconductor La(1.83)Sr(0.17)CuO(4+delta)

We report here the first direct observations of a well ordered vortex lattice in the bulk of a La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+delta) single crystal (slightly overdoped, x = 0.17). Our small angle neutron scattering investigation of the mixed phase reveals a crossover from triangular to square coordination with increasing magnetic field. The existence of an intrinsic square vortex lattice has never been observed in high-temperature superconductors and is indicative of the coupling of the vortex lattice to a source of anisotropy, such as those provided by a d-wave order parameter or the presence of stripes.

Spinons in a crossed-chains model of a 2D spin liquid

Using the random phase approximation, we show that a crossed-chains model of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with frustrated interchain couplings has a nondimerized spin-liquid ground state in 2D, with deconfined spinons as the elementary excitations. The results are confirmed by a bosonization study, which shows that the system is an example of a "sliding Luttinger liquid." In an external field, the system develops an incommensurate field-induced long-range order with a finite transition temperature.

Novel anisotropy in the superconducting gap structure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) probed by quasiparticle heat transport

Since the nature of pairing interactions is manifested in the superconducting gap symmetry, the exact gap structure, particularly any deviation from the simple d(x(2)-y(2)) symmetry, would help in elucidating the pairing mechanism in high- T(c) cuprates. Anisotropic heat transport measurement in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) reveals that the quasiparticle populations are different for the two nodal directions and thus the gap structure must be uniquely anisotropic, suggesting that pairing is governed by interactions with a rather complicated anisotropy. Intriguingly, it is found that the "plateau" in the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity is observed only in the b-axis transport.

Electromagnetic response of static and fluctuating stripes in cuprate superconductors

Using infrared spectroscopy, we found that changes in the in-plane charge dynamics attributable to static stripe order in La(1.275)Nd(0.6)Sr(0.125)CuO(4) or superconductivity in La(1.875)Sr(0.125)CuO(4) are confined to energies smaller than 100 cm(-1). An absorption peak in the low- omega conductivity of the Nd-doped compound is suggestive of localization effects due to the reduced dimensionality of static charge stripes. Neither superconductivity nor static stripe ordering has a noticeable effect on the depression of the scattering rate at omega<1000 cm(-1) characteristic of the pseudogap state in other classes of moderately doped cuprates.

Electrical resistivity anisotropy from self-organized one dimensionality in high-temperature superconductors

We investigate the manifestation of stripes in the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in untwinned single crystals of La2-xSrxCuO4 ( x = 0.02-0.04) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(y) ( y = 6.35-7.0). It is found that both systems show strongly temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy in the lightly hole-doped region and that the anisotropy in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(y) grows with decreasing y below approximately 6.60 despite the decreasing orthorhombicity, which gives most direct evidence that electrons self-organize into a macroscopically anisotropic state. The transport is found to be easier along the direction of the spin stripes already reported, demonstrating that the stripes are intrinsically conducting in cuprates.

Freezing of a stripe liquid

The existence of a stripe-liquid phase in a layered nickelate, La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4), is demonstrated through neutron scattering measurements. We show that incommensurate magnetic fluctuations evolve continuously through the charge-ordering temperature, although an abrupt decrease in the effective damping energy is observed on cooling through the transition. The energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic scattering are parametrized with a damped-harmonic-oscillator model describing overdamped spin waves in the antiferromagnetic domains defined instantaneously by charge stripes.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in an array of quantum wires

We demonstrate the emergence of the quantum Hall (QH) hierarchy in a 2D model of coupled quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. At commensurate values of the magnetic field, the system can develop instabilities to appropriate interwire electron hopping processes that drive the system into a variety of QH states. Some of the QH states are not included in the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. In addition, we find operators allowed at any field that lead to novel crystals of Laughlin quasiparticles. We demonstrate that any QH state is the ground state of a Hamiltonian that we explicitly construct.

A four unit cell periodic pattern of quasi-particle states surrounding vortex cores in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the additional quasi-particle states generated by quantized vortices in the high critical temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. They exhibit a copper-oxygen bond-oriented "checkerboard" pattern, with four unit cell (4a0) periodicity and a approximately 30 angstrom decay length. These electronic modulations may be related to the magnetic field-induced, 8a0 periodic, spin density modulations with decay length of approximately 70 angstroms recently discovered in La1.84Sr0.16CuO4. The proposed explanation is a spin density wave localized surrounding each vortex core. General theoretical principles predict that, in the cuprates, a localized spin modulation of wavelength lambda should be associated with a corresponding electronic modulation of wavelength lambda/2, in good agreement with our observations.

Antiferromagnetic order induced by an applied magnetic field in a high-temperature superconductor

One view of the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) copper oxide superconductors is that they are conventional superconductors where the pairing occurs between weakly interacting quasiparticles (corresponding to the electrons in ordinary metals), although the theory has to be pushed to its limit. An alternative view is that the electrons organize into collective textures (for example, charge and spin stripes) which cannot be 'mapped' onto the electrons in ordinary metals. Understanding the properties of the material would then need quantum field theories of objects such as textures and strings, rather than point-like electrons. In an external magnetic field, magnetic flux penetrates type II superconductors via vortices, each carrying one flux quantum. The vortices form lattices of resistive material embedded in the non-resistive superconductor, and can reveal the nature of the ground state-for example, a conventional metal or an ordered, striped phase-which would have appeared had superconductivity not intervened, and which provides the best starting point for a pairing theory. Here we report that for one high-Tc superconductor, the applied field that imposes the vortex lattice also induces 'striped' antiferromagnetic order. Ordinary quasiparticle models can account for neither the strength of the order nor the nearly field-independent antiferromagnetic transition temperature observed in our measurements.

Superconductivity mediated by charge fluctuations in layered molecular crystals

We consider the competition between superconducting, charge ordered, and metallic phases in layered molecular crystals with the theta and beta(") structures. Applying slave-boson theory to the relevant extended Hubbard model, we show that the superconductivity is mediated by charge fluctuations and the Cooper pairs have d(xy) symmetry. This is in contrast to the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)X family, for which theoretical calculations give superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations and with d(x(2)-y(2)) symmetry. We predict several materials that should become superconducting under pressure.

Nodal quasiparticles in stripe ordered superconductors

We study the properties of a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor which consists of an alternating array of two inequivalent chains. This model is a simple caricature of a striped high temperature superconductor, and is more generally a theoretically controllable system in which the superconducting state emerges from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Even in this limit, " d-wave-like" order parameter symmetry is natural, but the superconducting state can either have a complete gap in the quasiparticle spectrum, or gapless "nodal" quasiparticles. We also find circumstances in which antiferromagnetic order (typically incommensurate) coexists with superconductivity.

Thermodynamics of the interplay between magnetism and high-temperature superconductivity

Copper-oxide-based high-temperature superconductors have complex phase diagrams with multiple ordered phases. It even appears that the highest superconducting transition temperatures for certain cuprates are found in samples that display simultaneous onset of magnetism and superconductivity. We show here how the thermodynamics of fluid mixtures-a touchstone for chemistry as well as hard and soft condensed matter physics-accounts for this startling observation, as well as many other properties of the cuprates in the vicinity of the instability toward "striped" magnetism.

Mobility of the doped holes and the antiferromagnetic correlations in underdoped high- Tc cuprates

The emergence and the evolution of the metallic charge transport in the La2-xSrxCuO4 system from lightly to optimally doped samples (x = 0.01-0.17) are studied. We demonstrate that in high-quality single crystals the in-plane resistivity shows a metallic behavior for all values of x at moderate temperatures and that the hole mobility at 300 K changes only by a factor of 3 from x = 0.01 to 0.17, where its x dependence is found to be intriguingly similar to that of the inverse antiferromagnetic correlation length. We discuss an incoherent-metal picture and a charged-stripe scenario as candidates to account for these peculiar features.

Dual nature of the electronic structure of (La(2--x--y)Nd(y)Sr(x))CuO(4) and La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO(4)

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (La(1.4--x)-Nd(0.6)Sr(x))CuO(4), a model system with static one-dimensional (1D) charge ordering (stripe), and (La(1.85)-Sr(0.15))CuO(4), a high temperature superconductor (T(c) = 40 K) with possible dynamic stripes. In addition to the straight segments near ( pi,0) and ( 0,pi) antinodal regions, we have identified the existence of spectral weight along the [1,1] nodal direction in the electronic structure of both systems. This observation of nodal state, together with the straight segments near antinodal regions, reveals the dual nature of the electronic structure of stripes due to the competition of order and disorder.

Antiferromagnetic spin ladders effectively coupled by one-dimensional electron liquids

We study a model of the stripe state in strongly correlated systems consisting of an array of antiferromagnetic spin ladders, each with n(leg) legs, coupled to each other through the spin-exchange interaction to charged stripes in between each pair of ladders. The charged stripes are assumed to be Luttinger liquids in a spin-gap regime. An effective interaction for a pair of neighboring ladders is calculated by integrating out the gapped spin degrees of freedom in the charged stripes. The low energy effective theory of each ladder is a nonlinear sigma model with additional cross couplings of neighboring ladders, which favor either in-phase or antiphase short-range spin orderings depending on the physical parameters of the charged stripe.

Two-dimensional anisotropic non-Fermi-liquid phase of coupled Luttinger liquids

Using bosonization techniques, we show that strong forward scattering interactions between one-dimensional spinless Luttinger liquids (LL) can stabilize a phase where charge-density wave, superconducting, and transverse single particle hopping perturbations are irrelevant. This new phase retains its LL-like properties in the directions of the chains, but with relations between exponents modified by the transverse interactions, whereas it is a perfect insulator in the transverse direction. The mechanism that stabilizes this phase is strong transverse charge-density wave fluctuations at incommensurate wave vector, which frustrates crystal formation by preventing lock-in of the in-chain density waves.
