Abstract
A 4,7-phenanthroline polycyclic 1A designed for probing the limits of the Menschutkin reaction was synthesized in a six-step sequence. The rotational barrier of the phenyl ring nearby the N-methyl group in rac-2A was estimated to be ≫ 18.1 kcal/mol from VT-NMR experiments, making them a new type of helical atropisomer. The methylation rate constants of 9 and 1A with MeI was found to be 2.22 × 10(-4) and 9.62 × 10(-6) s(-1) mol(-1) L, respectively; thus, the formation rate of (P/M)-2A is one of the slowest rates ever reported for a Menschutkin reaction. The N-methyl protons in (P/M)-2A exhibit a significant upfield shift (Δδ 1.0 ppm) in its (1)H NMR, compared to those without a nearby phenyl, indicating a strong CH-π interaction is involved. Conformational flexibility in dipyridylethene 9 is clearly shown by its complexation with BH3 to form helical atropisomers (P,P/M,M)-10. The pKa values of the conjugate acids of 1A and 9 in acetonitrile were determined to be 4.65 and 5.07, respectively, which are much smaller compared to that of pyridine 14a (pKa = 12.33), implying that the basicity, nucleophilicity, and amine alkylation rates of 1A and 9 are markedly decreased by the severe steric hindrance of the flanking phenyl rings in the polyheterocycles.

Abstract
New silver(I) acylpyrazolonato derivatives displaying a mononuclear, polynuclear, or ionic nature, as a function of the ancillary azole ligands used in the synthesis, have been fully characterized by thermal analysis, solution NMR spectroscopy, solid-state IR and NMR spectroscopies, and X-ray diffraction techniques. These derivatives have been embedded in polyethylene (PE) matrix, and the antimicrobial activity of the composite materials has been tested against three bacterial strains (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus): Most of the composites show antimicrobial action comparable to PE embedded with AgNO3 . Tests by contact and release tests for specific migration of silver from PE composites clearly indicate that, at least in the case of the PE, for composites containing polynuclear silver(I) additives, the antimicrobial action is exerted by contact, without release of silver ions. Moreover, PE composites can be re-used several times, displaying the same antimicrobial activity. Membrane permeabilization studies and induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation tests confirm the disorganization of bacterial cell membranes. The cytotoxic effect, evaluated in CD34(+) cells by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide) and CFU (colony forming units) assays, indicates that the PE composites do not induce cytotoxicity in human cells. Studies of ecotoxicity, based on the test of Daphnia magna, confirm tolerability of the PE composites by higher organisms and exclude the release of Ag(+) ions in sufficient amounts to affect water environment.

Abstract
Aromatic rings exhibit defined interactions via the unique aromatic π face. Aromatic amino acids interact favorably with proline residues via both the hydrophobic effect and aromatic-proline interactions, C-H/π interactions between the aromatic π face and proline ring C-H bonds. The canonical aromatic amino acids Trp, Tyr, and Phe strongly disfavor a polyproline helix (PPII) when they are present in proline-rich sequences because of the large populations of cis amide bonds induced by favorable aromatic-proline interactions (aromatic-cis-proline and proline-cis-proline-aromatic interactions). We demonstrate the ability to tune polyproline helix conformation and cis-trans isomerism in proline-rich sequences using aromatic electronic effects. Electron-rich aromatic residues strongly disfavor polyproline helix and exhibit large populations of cis amide bonds, while electron-poor aromatic residues exhibit small populations of cis amide bonds and favor polyproline helix. 4-Aminophenylalanine is a pH-dependent electronic switch of polyproline helix, with cis amide bonds favored as the electron-donating amine, but trans amide bonds and polyproline helix preferred as the electron-withdrawing ammonium. Peptides with block proline-aromatic PPXPPXPPXPP sequences exhibited electronically switchable pH-dependent structures. Electron-poor aromatic amino acids provide special capabilities to integrate aromatic residues into polyproline helices and to serve as the basis of aromatic electronic switches to change structure.

Abstract
Prediction of the properties and behavior of antibiotics is important for their risk assessment and pollution control. Theoretical calculation was incorporated in our experimental study to investigate the sorption of ofloxacin (OFL) and norfloxacin (NOR) on carbon nanotubes and their solubilities in water, methanol, and their mixture. Sorption for OFL and NOR decreased as methanol volume fractions (fc) increased. But the log-linear cosolvency model could not be applied as a general model to describe the cosolvent effect on OFL and NOR sorption. We computed the bond lengths of possible hydrogen bonds between solute and solvent and the corresponding interaction energies using Density Functional Theory. The decreased OFL solubility with increased fc could be attributed to the generally stronger hydrogen bond between OFL and H2O than that between OFL and CH3OH. Solubility of NOR varied nonmonotonically with increasing fc, which may be understood from the stronger hydrogen bond of NOR-CH3OH than NOR-H2O at two important sites (-O18 and -O21). The interaction energies were also calculated for the solute surrounded by solvent molecules at all the possible hydrogen bond sites, but it did not match the solubility variations with fc for both chemicals. The difference between the simulated and real systems was discussed. Similar sorption but different solubility of NOR and OFL from water-methanol cosolvent suggested that sorbate-solvent interaction seems not control their sorption.

Abstract
In the title compound, C36H24Br3N3O6·C7H8, the toluene solvent molecule is associated with the receptor molecule via C—H⋯π bonding. The planes of the phthalimido groups are inclined at 77.0 (1), 63.0 (1) and 77.8 (1)° with respect to the benzene ring. The molecular conformation is stabilized by C—H⋯O and C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds. The crystal structure features non-classical hydrogen bonds of the C—H⋯N, C—H⋯O and C—H⋯Br type, leading to a three-dimensional cross-linking of molecules. The pattern of non-covalent intermolecular bonding is completed by O⋯Br halogen bonds [3.306 (3) Å], which link the receptor molecules into infinite strands extending along the a-axis direction.

Abstract
A selection of imines derived from phenyl t-butyl ketones and substituted 2-phenylethylamines or phenylalanine exhibit slow rotation around the aryl–imino bond at ambient temperature, resulting in a large non-equivalence of the ortho hydrogens in the 1H NMR spectra. This facilitates assessment of aryl substituent effects on the face tilted-T CH–π interaction between a phenyl ring (A) on the imino carbon proximate to the terminal phenyl ring (B). Analysis of the marked temperature dependence of the chemical shift of the interacting ortho hydrogen affords estimates of the opposing enthalpic and entropic factors involved in the rapid equilibrium between the closed edge-to-face conformation and alternative open conformations devoid of a CH–π interaction while in solution. Above ca. 80 °C the entropy term (TΔS) cancels out the enthalpy (ΔH) favouring the closed conformation and open conformations are preferred. Accordingly, commonly reported binding free energies may not be a good measure of the energetic strength of intramolecular aromatic interactions. Investigation of an ortho fluoro substituted compound indicates that a CF–π interaction is at least 1.0 kcal mol−1 weaker in enthalpy than the CH–π interaction. Several X-ray crystal structures depicting an intramolecular edge-to-face interaction are presented.

Abstract
New Tb(iii) and Eu(iii) complexes have been synthesized as potential pH probes using a tripodal substituted-salicylic ligand (H3). Among them, this carboxylate ligand is found to be a good sensitizer for Tb(iii) emission owing to the superior match of the triplet energy level of the ligand with the (5)D4 emitting level of Tb(iii). The resulting · complex exhibited high sensitivity in the physiological pH range with significant "off-on-off" fluorescence changes in aqueous solution. Furthermore, this unique rare-earth complex has been successfully used to monitor pH variations within HeLa cells and with filter papers.

Abstract
The syntheses and properties of corannulenes carrying electron-withdrawing groups (F, CF3 , C6 F5 ) are reported. Direct fluorination of corannulene (C20 H10 ) was carried out with xenon difluoride, and the crystal structure of the product was confirmed by the X-ray analysis. Novel trifluoromethylated corannulenes, including the versatile 4,9-dibromo-1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)corannulene, were obtained by various established ring-closing reactions. Besides the use of hexafluorobutyne for the construction of fluoranthenes by Diels-Alder reaction as precursor molecules to form 1,2-disubstituted corannulenes, bis(pentafluorophenyl)acetylene was employed as dienophile. The molecular structure and crystal packing of a trifluoromethylated corannulene was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis and compared with those known brominated and trifluoromethylated corannulenes. The general electron-acceptor properties of corannulenes bearing substituents introduced in particular positions by liquid-phase synthesis are discussed together with published computational results.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the biocompatibility of Au nanoparticles (NPs) capped with peptide-biphenyl hybrid (PBH) ligands containing glycine (Gly), cysteine (Cys), tyrosine (Tyr), tryptophan (Trp) and methionine (Met) amino acids in the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line Hep G2. Five AuNPs, Au[(Gly-Tyr-Met)2B], Au[(Gly-Trp-Met)2B], Au[(Met)2B], Au[(Gly-Tyr-TrCys)2B] and Au[(TrCys)2B], were synthesised. Physico-chemical and cytotoxic properties were thoroughly studied. Transmission electron micrographs showed isolated near-spherical nanoparticles with diameters of 1.5, 1.6, 2.3, 1.8 and 2.3 nm, respectively. Dynamic light scattering evidenced the high stability of suspensions in Milli-Q water and culture medium, particularly when supplemented with serum, showing in all cases a tendency to form agglomerates with diameters approximately 200 nm. In the cytotoxicity studies, interference caused by AuNPs with some typical cytotoxicity assays was demonstrated; thus, only data obtained from the resazurin based assay were used. After 48-h incubation, only concentrations ≥50 μg/ml exhibited cytotoxicity. Such doses were also responsible for an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Some differences were observed among the studied NPs. Of particular importance is the AuNPs capped with the PBH ligand (Gly-Tyr-TrCys)2B showing remarkable stability in culture medium, even in the absence of serum. Moreover, these AuNPs have unique biological effects on Hep G2 cells while showing low toxicity. The production of ROS along with supporting optical microscopy images suggests cellular interaction/uptake of these particular AuNPs. Future research efforts should further test this hypothesis, as such interaction/uptake is highly relevant in drug delivery systems.

Abstract
In the title compound, C15H11N, the mean planes of the aromatic moieties are inclined to one another by 72.9 (1)°. The crystal is stabilized by π–π stacking interactions between the pyridine rings of inversion-related molecules, with a centroid–centroid distance of 3.772 (2) Å. In addition, C—H⋯π contacts involving an α-C—H group of the pyridine ring and the nonsubstituted ring of the naphthalene unit are observed, giving rise to a herringbone-type supramolecular architecture of the naphthalene moiety being contained in the molecule.
