Abstract
The two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cd(TPTZ)(H2O)2(HCOOH)(IPA)2]n (1; TPTZ = {4-[4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)phenyl]phenyl}-1H-1,2,4-triazole, IPA = isophthalic acid) has been constructed with the π-electron-rich aromatic ligand TPTZ, auxiliary ligand IPA, and the metal Cd(2+) ion with a d(10) configuration under solvothermal conditions. Complex 1 exhibits a strong ligand-originated photoluminescence emission, which is selectively sensitive toward electron-deficient nitroaromatic compounds, such as nitrobenzene (NB), 1,3-dinitrobenzene (m-DNB), and 1,4-dinitrobenzene (p-DNB), and nitro-aliphatic compounds, such as nitromethane (NM) and tris(hydroxymethyl)nitromethane. This property makes complex 1 a potential fluorescence sensor for these chemicals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that dinuclear cadmium building units were further bridged by TPTZ ligands to give a four-connected uninodal net with the Schläfli symbol of [4.6(3).4.6(3).6(2).6(4)].

Abstract
The supramolecular order of a 2,5-bis(dodecanoxy)phenyleneethynylene-butadiyne series of rod-like oligomers with 2, 4, 6, and 8 phenyleneethynylene moieties was studied in the solid state by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature-dependent small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), polarized optical microscopy (POM), high-resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It was found that all of the oligomers self-assemble in blocks of molecules that resemble bricks that are randomly oriented. These oligomers are described as sanidic liquid crystals as a term to classify their mesomorphic behavior because of their brick or board-like structure. The strong π-π interaction that governs the package of conjugated backbones was evidenced by the reiterative distances of 0.36 ± 0.017 nm found by SWAXS and 0.32 ± 0.017 nm found by HRTEM. A STM study of a cast film of the tetramer deposited on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) allowed for the visualization and determination of the conjugated backbone length of 2.48 nm and a phenyl-phenyl distance of 0.34 nm, suggesting that the molecules are stacked in lamellae perpendicularly aligned to the substrate.

Role of redox centre in charge transport investigated by novel self-assembled conjugated polymer molecular junctions. Nat Commun 2015; 6:7478. Abstract
Molecular electronics describes a field that seeks to implement electronic components made of molecular building blocks. To date, few studies have used conjugated polymers in molecular junctions despite the fact that they potentially transport charge more efficiently than the extensively investigated small-molecular systems. Here we report a novel type of molecular tunnelling junction exploring the use of conjugated polymers, which are self-assembled into ultrathin films in a distinguishable ‘planar' manner from the traditional vertically oriented small-molecule monolayers. Electrical measurements on the junctions reveal molecular-specific characteristics of the polymeric molecules in comparison with less conjugated small molecules. More significantly, we decorate redox-active functionality into polymeric backbones, demonstrating a key role of redox centre in the modulation of charge transport behaviour via energy level engineering and external stimuli, and implying the potential of employing tailor-made polymeric components as alternatives to small molecules for future molecular-scale electronics. To date, conjugated polymers have not yet been used in molecular junctions despite the fact that they transport charge more efficiently than small-molecular systems. Here, Wang et al. showcase the self-assembly of conjugated polymers into ultrathin films in a planar manner for device construction.

Abstract
A series of linear covalent assemblies of dendrimers with conjugated backbones were synthesized by means of an iterative divergent and convergent method in which copper-catalyzed acetylene-azide cycloaddition reactions were used to form flexible linkages. UV-vis and fluorescence spectra indicate that dendrimeric assemblies have a strong propensity to adopt folded conformations in which conjugated backbones adopt planar conformations. The folded conformation is stabilized by strong attractive van der Waals and dipole-dipole interactions between the dendrimers.

Abstract
Polyphilic compound B12 is an X-shaped molecule with a stiff aromatic core, flexible aliphatic side chains, and hydrophilic end groups. Forming a thermotropic triangular honeycomb phase in the bulk between 177 and 182 °C but no lyotropic phases, it is designed to fit into DPPC or DMPC lipid bilayers, in which it phase separates at room temperature, as observed in giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) by fluorescence microscopy. TEM investigations of bilayer aggregates support the incorporation of B12 into intact membranes. The temperature-dependent behavior of the mixed samples was followed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FT-IR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray scattering. DSC results support in-membrane phase separation, where a reduced main transition and new B12-related transitions indicate the incorporation of lipids into the B12-rich phase. The phase separation was confirmed by X-ray scattering, where two different lamellar repeat distances are visible over a wide temperature range. Polarized ATR-FTIR and fluorescence anisotropy experiments support the transmembrane orientation of B12, and FT-IR spectra further prove a stepwise "melting" of the lipid chains. The data suggest that in the B12-rich domains the DPPC chains are still rigid and the B12 molecules interact with each other via π-π interactions. All results obtained at temperatures above 75 °C confirm the formation of a single, homogeneously mixed phase with freely mobile B12 molecules.

Abstract
A rare family of six discrete binuclear [PdCl(PEt3)2] phenylene ethynylene rods with alkoxy side chains (methoxy, ethoxy and heptoxy) have been developed, and their solid-state photoluminescence results have been presented and discussed. The shorter bridging ligands are of the general formula H-C≡C-C6H2(R)2-C≡C-H, where R = H, OCH3, OC2H5, and OC7H15, whereas the longer ones are based on H-C≡C-C6H4-C≡C-C6H2(R)2-C≡C-C6H4-C≡C-H, where R = OCH3, OC2H5. These ligands display increasing length in both the main dimension (backbone length) as well as the number of carbons in the side chains (R, alkoxide side chain) that stem from the central phenylene moiety. The X-ray crystal structures of two of the prepared complexes are reported: one corresponds to a shorter rod, 1,4-bis[trans-(PEt3)2ClPd-C≡C]-2,5-diethoxybenzene (6c), while the second one is associated with a longer rod, the binuclear complex 1,4-bis[trans-(PEt3)2ClPd-4-(-C≡C-C6H4-C≡C)]-2,5-diethoxybenzene (7c). All new compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C{(1)H} and (31)P{(1)H}) as well as ESI-MS(TOF), EA, FTIR, UV-Vis, cyclic voltammetry and solid-state photoluminescence. Our work shows the influence of the alkoxy side chains on the electronic structure of the family of binuclear Pd rods by lowering its oxidation potential. In addition to this, the increase of the length of the bridge results in a higher oxidation potential. Solid state photoluminescence results indicate that Pd complexes are characterized by a marked decrease in both the emission intensity and the fluorescence lifetime values as compared to their ligands. This behaviour could be due to some degree of ligand-to-metal charge transfer.

Abstract
Reductive dimerization of acetylenic anthraquinones provides synthetic access to flexible nonplanar polyaromatics with a tetracenedione core. In solution, these nonplanar, contorted polycycles exist as equilibrating mixtures of two symmetric conformers. The fused tetracenediones are easily reduced and exhibit rich electrochemical behavior.
