Human Health Risk Assessment Related to Cyanotoxins Exposure

Immediate and long-term impacts of UV-C irradiation on photosynthetic capacity, survival and microcystin-LR release risk of Microcystis aeruginosa

In this study, the immediate and long-term impacts of shortwave ultraviolet (UV-C) irradiation on photosynthetic capacity, survival, and recovery of Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated. The risk of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) release during irradiation was also estimated. The cell density was determined by a flow cytometry, and typical chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, including the effective quantum yield, photosynthetic efficiency and maximal electron transport rate, were measured by a pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. Under various UV-C dosages (140-4200 mJ cm(-2)), photosynthetic capacities were reduced, to different degrees, accompanied by slight cytoclasis and complete degradation of extracellular MC-LR immediately after irradiation. In a 6-d cultivation following UV-C irradiation, cell density and extracellular MC-LR in the samples treated by 140 mJ cm(-2) UV-C irradiation increased from 4.0×10(6) cells mL(-1) and 8 μg L(-1) to 5.1×10(6) cells mL(-1) and 20 μg L(-1), respectively. Significant M. aeruginosa cytoclasis (cell density from 4.0×10(6) to 1.0×10(6) cells mL(-1)) and MC-LR release (2-25 μg L(-1)) occurred when the UV-C dosage reached 350 mJ cm(-2). Cell cytoclasis and MC-LR release were enhanced in the cultivated samples under higher UV-C dosages. Results revealed that photosynthetic parameters were useful tools to predict the recovery profiles of M. aeruginosa cells, and the MC-LR release risk should be considered after UV-C inactivation.

Biochemical response of diverse organs in adult Danio rerio (zebrafish) exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of microcystin-LR and microcystin-RR: a balneation study

The present study was carried out to examine the dose-response of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and microcystin-RR (MC-RR) toxicity in adult Danio rerio (zebrafish) under balneation conditions at various time points. The differential responses of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) as biomarkers were assessed for oxygen mediated toxicity in liver, gills, intestine and brain tissues of zebrafish exposed to dissolved MC-LR and MC-RR (0.1-10.0 μgl(-1)). To investigate the time related response of biomarkers, fish were sampled after 4, 7 and 15 days of exposure. Responses varied (i) between MC-LR and MC-RR (for certain groups), (ii) for different enzymes at all time points, and (iii) for different tissues. In general, most of the enzymes followed a bell shaped curve, with an abrupt increase in activity at a particular concentration. It was observed that upon exposure to MC-LR and MC-RR, some enzymes showed an adaptive response after the first time point wherein the enzyme activity increased in some tissues. The increase in enzyme activity is suggestive of their cellular and metabolic adaptations to the continued stress and toxin exposure. Enzyme activities in general increased at lower concentrations (≤ 5.0 μgl(-1)) and decreased at higher concentrations (≥ 5.0 μgl(-1)). An abrupt change in enzyme activities was observed at a particular concentration in all the tissue enzymes. For GPx and GR, there was a differential response in the case of fish exposed to MC-LR and MC-RR, which could be due to the difference in toxicity potentials of these cyanotoxins. In general, initial stress conditions were observed in most of the tissue enzymes following the exposure to microcystins (MCs). This observation suggests that MCs found in trace levels are likely to have deleterious effects on aquatic organisms and can trigger a variety of biochemical responses depending on their specific toxicity.

Microcystin-LR causes cytotoxicity effects in rat testicular Sertoli cells

Microcystins (MCs) are produced by cyanobacteria. The most toxic and widely distributed MC is microcystin-LR (MC-LR). The aim of this study was to investigate whether exposure to MC-LR could induce oxidative stress, leading the further toxicity effects on Sertoli cells in vitro. Sertoli cells obtained from rats were cultured with a medium containing 0, 0.5, 5, 50 or 500 nM/l MC-LR. We examined the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), the increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, the increase of lipid peroxidation and decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in Sertoli cells after treatment with MC-LR in vitro, and higher expression of caspase-9 and caspase-3, the increase of apoptosis rate. Therefore, we deduced that direct exposure to microcystin-LR could induce oxidative stress generation in Sertoli cells, and subsequently depressed cellular viability and caused cells to undergo apoptosis, resulting in the reproductive toxicity in male rats.

Multimodal action and selective toxicity of zerovalent iron nanoparticles against cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria pose a serious threat to water resources around the world. This is compounded by the fact that they are extremely resilient, having evolved numerous protective mechanisms to ensure their dominant position in their ecosystem. We show that treatment with nanoparticles of zerovalent iron (nZVI) is an effective and environmentally benign method for destroying and preventing the formation of cyanobacterial water blooms. The nanoparticles have multiple modes of action, including the removal of bioavailable phosphorus, the destruction of cyanobacterial cells, and the immobilization of microcystins, preventing their release into the water column. Ecotoxicological experiments showed that nZVI is a highly selective agent, having an EC(50) of 50 mg/L against cyanobacteria; this is 20-100 times lower than its EC(50) for algae, daphnids, water plants, and fishes. The primary product of nZVI treatment is nontoxic and highly aggregated Fe(OH)(3), which promotes flocculation and gradual settling of the decomposed cyanobacterial biomass.

Accumulation and phytotoxicity of microcystin-LR in rice (Oryza sativa)

Irrigation with eutrophic water containing microcystins-LR (MC-LR) poses a potential risk to crops. However, the accumulation of MC-LR in rice grains and the mechanism of MC-LR-induced inhibition in rice roots are not understood. In this study, we detected the accumulation of MC-LR in rice grains collected from Taihu Lake region. MC-LR could accumulate in rice grains, but the risk evaluation suggested that MC-LR levels in rice grains from Taihu Lake region may not pose a threat to human health currently. In addition, MC-LR with low concentrations did not affect the growth of rice roots. However, MC-LR with high concentrations impeded the rice root morphogenesis by inhibiting root elongation, crown root formation, and lateral root development from primordia. Treatment with high concentrations of MC-LR stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) in rice roots. Exogenous NO treatment reversed the inhibition of rice root growth under MC-LR stress. These results indicated that ROS and NO played important roles in the development of rice roots in responding to MC-LR stress.

Time-dependent histopathological changes induced in Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after acute exposure to pure cylindrospermopsin by oral and intraperitoneal route

Although fish and aquatic organisms can be in contact with the cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN), toxicological studies are practically nonexistent. CYN has a late and progressive acute toxicity in rodents, but no data have been reported in fish. In this work, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were exposed for the first time to an acute dose of CYN (200 μg/kg fish) by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, and the effects were compared with the oral route (gavage). In both cases, fish were sacrificed after 24 h or 5 days of the toxin administration. CYN induced multiorganic damage, being the liver and kidney the main targets of toxicity. The histological findings were more pronounced after i.p. administration (in the liver, kidney, heart, gills) with the exception of the gastrointestinal tract. The time of sacrifice influenced the degree of histological damage in all organs studied, and was more severe after 5 d in comparison to 24 h. Moreover, CYN induced an increase in the average nuclear diameter of hepatocytes in the liver, and decreased cross sections of proximal and distal convoluted tubules in the kidney. The changes in these parameters were also more severe by i.p. route, and with the time of sacrifice, supporting the histopathological results obtained in these organs. Thus, both parameters could be useful for quantifying the extent of the damage in fish after CYN exposure.

Microcystin-LR induced DNA damage in human peripheral blood lymphocytes

Human exposure to microcystins, which are produced by freshwater cyanobacterial species, is of growing concern due to increasing appearance of cyanobacterial blooms as a consequence of global warming and increasing water eutrophication. Although microcystins are considered to be liver-specific, there is evidence that they may also affect other tissues. These substances have been shown to induce DNA damage in vitro and in vivo, but the mechanisms of their genotoxic activity remain unclear. In human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HPBLs) exposure to non-cytotoxic concentrations (0, 0.1, 1 and 10μg/ml) of microcystin-LR (MCLR) induced a dose- and time-dependent increase in DNA damage, as measured with the comet assay. Digestion of DNA from MCLR-treated HPBLs with purified formamidopyrimidine-DNA glycosylase (Fpg) displayed a greater number of DNA strand-breaks than non-digested DNA, confirming the evidence that MCLR induces oxidative DNA damage. With the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay no statistically significant induction of micronuclei, nucleoplasmic bridges and nuclear buds was observed after a 24-h exposure to MCLR. At the molecular level, no changes in the expression of selected genes involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and oxidative stress were observed after a 4-h exposure to MCLR (1μg/ml). After 24h, DNA damage-responsive genes (p53, mdm2, gadd45a, cdkn1a), a gene involved in apoptosis (bax) and oxidative stress-responsive genes (cat, gpx1, sod1, gsr, gclc) were up-regulated. These results provide strong support that MCLR is an indirectly genotoxic agent, acting via induction of oxidative stress, and that lymphocytes are also the target of microcystin-induced toxicity.

Effects on growth and oxidative stress status of rice plants (Oryza sativa) exposed to two extracts of toxin-producing cyanobacteria (Aphanizomenon ovalisporum and Microcystis aeruginosa)

Toxic cyanobacteria are considered emerging world threats, being responsible for the degradation of the aquatic ecosystems. Aphanizomenon ovalisporum produces the toxin Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) being a concern in fresh water habitats. This work aims to increase our knowledge on the effects of this toxic cyanobacterium in plants by studying the alterations in growth parameters and oxidative stress status of rice (Oriza sativa) exposed to the cyanobacteria cell extracts containing CYN. Significant increases in glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were detected in the different experiments performed. The roots showed to be more sensitive than leaves regarding the enzyme activities. A reduction in the leaf tissue fresh weight was observed after 9 days of plant treatment suggesting a major physiological stress. The exposure of rice plants to a mixture of A. ovalisporum and Microcystis aeruginosa cell extracts containing CYN and microcystins including microcystin-LR, resulted in a significant increase in the GST and GPx activities, suggesting a synergistic effect of both extracts. Together these results point out the negative effects of cyanotoxins on plant growth and oxidative status, induced by A. ovalisporum cell extracts, raising also concerns in the accumulation of CYN.

Oxidative stress responses in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to a single dose of pure cylindrospermopsin under laboratory conditions: influence of exposure route and time of sacrifice

Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a toxin produced by various cyanobacterial species that are increasingly being found in freshwater systems. Although CYN can have toxic effects in humans, domestic animals and wildlife, it has been subject to very little investigation (particularly in fish). It has been reported to deplete the cellular glutathione content but the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenicity of CYN in fish is unknown. For this reason tilapia fish were exposed to 200 μg/kg pure CYN through two different exposure routes-gavage and intraperitoneal injection-and sacrificed after 24 h and 5 days. The results showed an increase in NADPH oxidase activity (a biomarker of reactive oxygen species formation), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and protein oxidation; no changes in DNA oxidation; and a reduction in glutathione levels (GSH) and γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCS) activity, the limiting enzyme in glutathione synthesis. The time of sacrifice had a bigger influence on the results than the exposure route because after 5 days some of the biomarkers assayed had recovered their pre-intoxication levels, which was not the case after 24 h.

Bioaccumulation of microcystins by fish associated with a persistent cyanobacterial bloom in Lago de Patzcuaro (Michoacan, Mexico)

Lago de Patzcuaro is a historically important freshwater fishery in Mexico. The lake is presently characterized by a persistent bloom of cyanobacteria, specifically dominated by recognized producers of toxic microcystins (MCYSTs). We evaluated MCYSTs in sestonic and dissolved fractions of the water column, as well as representative fish species (silversides, Chirostoma spp.; Goodea sp.; and carp, Cyprinus carpio) obtained from local markets and small commercial catches during the bloom. Samples were evaluated primarily by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and secondarily by protein phosphatase (PPase) inhibition assay and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Sestonic MCYST concentration (0.02-0.36 µg/L) generally correlated inversely with distance from the bloom, supporting the bloom as the source of the toxin. Several MCYST variants, including MC-LR, -LA and -LY, as well as didemethyl variants, were identified by LC-MS/MS analysis. All three species of fish bioaccumulated MCYSTs in relevant tissues, and toxin content correlated with trophic level, with highest and lowest levels measured in phytoplanktivorous and zooplanktivorous representatives, respectively. Detection of MCYST in silversides and Goodea sp. is particularly relevant because both are consumed in their entirety, including viscera (e.g., liver) known to primarily accumulate MCYST. These results indicate that Lago de Patzcuaro is indeed characterized by a toxigenic bloom, and that commercially important fish species from the lake accumulate toxic MCYST in tissues relevant to human consumption. As such, this system may represent an ideal model of the trophic transfer of MCYSTs and its relevance to human and environmental health.

Human glutathione transferases catalyzing the conjugation of the hepatoxin microcystin-LR

Many cyanobacterial species are able to produce cyanotoxins as secondary metabolites. Among them, microcystins (MC) are a group of around 80 congeners of toxic cyclic heptapeptides. MC-LR is the most studied MC congener, in view of its high acute hepatotoxicity and tumor promoting activity. Humans may be exposed to cyanotoxins through several routes, the oral one being the most important. The accepted pathway for MC-LR detoxication and excretion in the urine is GSH conjugation. The GSH adduct (GS-MCLR) formation has been shown to occur spontaneously and enzymatically, catalyzed by glutathione transferases (GSTs). The enzymatic reaction has been reported but not characterized both in vitro and in vivo in animal and plant species. No data are available on humans. In the present work, the MC-LR conjugation with GSH catalyzed by five recombinant human GSTs (A1-1, A3-3, M1-1, P1-1, and T1-1) has been characterized for the first time. All GSTs are able to catalyze the reaction; kinetic parameters K(m), k(cat), and their relative specific activities to form GS-MCLR were derived (T1-1 > A1-1 > M1-1 > A3-3 ≫ P1-1). In the range of MC tested concentrations used (0.25-50 μM) GSTT1-1 and A1-1 showed a typical saturation curve with similar affinity for MC-LR (≈80 μM; k(cat) values 0.18 and 0.10 min(-1), respectively), A3-3 and M1-1 were linear, whereas GSTP1-1 showed a temperature-dependent sigmoidal allosteric curve with a k(cat) = 0.11 min(-1). The enzymes mainly expressed in the liver and gastrointestinal tract, GSTA1-1, T1-1, and M1-1, seemed to be mainly involved in the MC-LR detoxification after oral exposure, whereas P1-1 kinetics and location in the skin suggest a role related to dermal exposure. Considering the high frequency of some GST polymorphism, especially M1 and T1 gene deletion, with complete loss in activity, this information could be the first step to identify groups of individual at higher risk associated with MC exposure.

Decline of sperm quality and testicular function in male mice during chronic low-dose exposure to microcystin-LR

The effects of chronic low-dose exposure to microcystins were preliminarily studied on sperm quality and testicular function in male mice. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) was orally administered to male mice at 0, 1, 3.2, and 10 μg/L for 3 and 6 months. Our preliminary study found in three-month group, sperm quality declined at 3.2 and 10 μg/L doses, testosterone dropped at 10 μg/L, levels of LH and FSH increased, and Leydig cells exhibited apoptosis. Similar, but more pronounced, effects were observed in groups treated with MC-LR for 6 months. Compared to control (0 μg/L), the rate of sperm abnormality was higher and testosterone levels were lower following administration of 3.2 and 10 μg/L MC-LR and structural damage to the testis was observed with 10 μg/L dose. Thus, chronic low-dose treatment with MC-LR results in substantial toxicity to male reproduction, causing declines in sperm quality, decreased levels of serum testosterone, and injury to the testis.

Experimental studies on removal of microcystin-LR by peat

Cyanotoxins have caused worldwide concerns for their eclectic occurrence and toxic effects, which led to an intensive search of cost-effective techniques for their removal from contaminated waters. A range of biomaterials was tested for their efficacy to adsorb a potent cyanotoxin, microcystin-LR (MCLR). Among these sorbents, peat showed the maximum efficacy to sequester MCLR. The BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area of peat was found to be 12.134 m(2)/g. The pH of the reaction media played a significant role in removal of MCLR; maximum adsorption occurred at pH 3. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption of MCLR onto peat was a rapid process. The adsorption capacity (Q(max)) from the Langmuir model was found to be 255.7 μg/g at pH 3. Among various desorption media studied, strong alkali (2N NaOH) showed highest desorption (94%).

Cyanotoxin mixtures and taste-and-odor compounds in cyanobacterial blooms from the Midwestern United States

The mixtures of toxins and taste-and-odor compounds present during cyanobacterial blooms are not well characterized and of particular concern when evaluating potential human health risks. Cyanobacterial blooms were sampled in twenty-three Midwestern United States lakes and analyzed for community composition, thirteen cyanotoxins by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and immunoassay, and two taste-and-odor compounds by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Aphanizomenon, Cylindrospermopsis and/or Microcystis were dominant in most (96%) blooms, but community composition was not strongly correlated with toxin and taste-and-odor occurrence. Microcystins occurred in all blooms. Total microcystin concentrations measured by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and immunoassay were linearly related (r(s) = 0.76, p < 0.01) and LC/MS/MS concentrations were lower than or similar to ELISA in most (85%) samples. Geosmin (87%), 2-methylisoborneol (39%), anatoxin-a (30%), saxitoxins (17%), cylindrospermopsins (9%), and nodularin-R (9%) also were present in these blooms. Multiple classes of cyanotoxins occurred in 48% of blooms and 95% had multiple microcystin variants. Toxins and taste-and-odor compounds frequently co-occurred (91% of blooms), indicating odor may serve as a warning that cyanotoxins likely are present. However, toxins occurred more frequently than taste-and-odor compounds, so odor alone does not provide sufficient warning to ensure human-health protection.

Cyanobacterial Blooms and the Occurrence of the neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in South Florida Aquatic Food Webs

Recent studies demonstrate that most cyanobacteria produce the neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and that it can biomagnify in at least one terrestrial food chain. BMAA has been implicated as a significant environmental risk in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). We examined several blooms of cyanobacteria in South Florida, and the BMAA content of resident animals, including species used as human food. A wide range of BMAA concentrations were found, ranging from below assay detection limits to approximately 7000 μg/g, a concentration associated with a potential long-term human health hazard.

Can LASSBio 596 and dexamethasone treat acute lung and liver inflammation induced by microcystin-LR?

The treatment of microcystin-LR (MCYST-LR)-induced lung inflammation has never been reported. Hence, LASSBio 596, an anti-inflammatory drug candidate, designed as symbiotic agent that modulates TNF-alpha levels and inhibits phosphodiesterase types 4 and 5, or dexamethasone were tested in this condition. Swiss mice were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 60 microl of saline (CTRL) or a sub-lethal dose of MCYST-LR (40 micrg/kg). 6 h later they were treated (i.p.) with saline (TOX), LASSBio 596 (10 mg/kg, L596), or dexamethasone (1 mg/kg, 0.1 mL, DEXA). 8 h after MCYST-LR injection, pulmonary mechanics were determined, and lungs and livers prepared for histopathology, biochemical analysis and quantification of MCYST-LR. TOX showed significantly higher lung impedance than CTRL and L596, which were similar. DEXA could only partially block the mechanical alterations. In both TOX and DEXA alveolar collapse and inflammatory cell influx were higher than in CTRL and L596, being LASSBio 596 more effective than dexamethasone. TOX showed oxidative stress that was not present in CTRL and L596, while DEXA was partially efficient. MCYST-LR was detected in the livers of all mice receiving MCYST-LR and no recovery was apparent. In conclusion, LASSBio 596 was more efficient than dexamethasone in reducing the pulmonary functional impairment induced by MCYST-LR.

Phytoplankton community of the drinking water supply reservoir Borovitsa (South Bulgaria) with an emphasis on cyanotoxins and water quality

The phytoplankton diversity, algal biomass, and selected physicochemical parameters were investigated in the drinking water reservoir (Borovitsa) located in the Kardzhali region, Bulgaria. Particular attention was given to Cyanoprokaryota and presence of cyanotoxins in the water samples. Twenty-nine species belonging to six divisions (Cyanoprokaryota, Chlorophyta, Zygnemophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta and Bacillariophyta) were identified. The microscopic examination of the phytoplankton samples showed the dominance of Ankyra judayi, Oocystis lacustris (Chlorophyta) and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (Cyanoprokaryota) in July 2006, and Microcystis pulverea, Synechococcus elongatus (Cyanoprokaryota), Radiococcus planktonicus (Chlorophyta) and Melosira varians (Bacillariophyta) in September 2006. A blooming event due to Aphanizomenon flos-aquae was observed in July 2006. The reservoir exhibits a tendency to shift from an oligotrophic environment to a state of mesotrophy. Presence of cyanotoxins such as anatoxin-a, microcystins and saxitoxins were analyzed by HPLC and ELISA methods. Our results demonstrated the presence of anatoxin-a and microcystins (0.09 µg/L) in the raw water samples from July 2006, and saxitoxins (2.5 µg/L) and microcystins (0.18 µg/L) in the raw water samples from September 2006. The study underlines that permanent monitoring programs of Cyanoprokaryota in the reservoirs used as sources of drinking water and toxicity assessments should be implemented. Indirect exposure and transfer of cyanotoxins through food chains must also be considered.

Human exposure to cyanobacteria and BMAA

Cyanobacteria are found worldwide, primarily in aquatic habitats. They are increasing in abundance as a result of increasing nutrient inputs from various human activities. Recent data indicate that most cyanobacteria produce the neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), and this toxin can biomagnify UP some food chains to rather high concentrations in animals used as food by humans. BMAA may pose an increasing human health risk.

First evidence of estrogenic potential of the cyanobacterial heptotoxins the nodularin-R and the microcystin-LR in cultured mammalian cells

The estrogenic activity of cyanobacterial hepatotoxins microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and nodularin-R (NOD-R) was for the first time investigated invitro in a stably transfect cell line with an estrogen-regulated luciferase gene. Treatment of cells with NOD-R caused a dose-dependent increase in the luciferase activity. NOD-R gave rise to an induction of luciferase activity with an EC(50) value of 66.4 nM, whereas the positive control, 17beta-estradiol (E2) had an EC(50) of 9.6 pM. This indicates that NOD-R is a 6900-fold weaker inducer of luciferase than E2. In contrast, only a slight but significant activation of the luciferase gene was observed with MC-LR between 2.01 and 60.1 nM, and a maximal-induced response was observed with 10.1 nM, approximately 25% of the maximal effect obtained with 1 nM E2. The decrease in the luciferase activity at high MC-LR concentrations can be explained by a cytotoxic effect. No synergistic estrogenic effect was observed when each toxin was co-administrated with E2. However, the induction of the luciferase activity by NOD-R and MC-LR was inhibited by co-treatment with 1 microM of the pure estrogenic receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 182,780, thus proving the ER-dependency of the estrogenic effect.

The molecular genetics of cyanobacterial toxicity as a basis for monitoring water quality and public health risk

Toxic cyanobacteria pose a significant hazard to human health and the environment. The recent characterisation of cyanotoxin synthetase gene clusters has resulted in an explosion of molecular detection methods for these organisms and their toxins. Conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests targeting cyanotoxin biosynthesis genes provide a rapid and sensitive means for detecting potentially toxic populations of cyanobacteria in water supplies. The adaptation of these simple PCR tests into quantitative methods has additionally enabled the monitoring of dynamic bloom populations and the identification of particularly problematic species. More recently, DNA microarray technology has been applied to cyanobacterial diagnostics offering a high-throughput option for detecting and differentiating toxic genotypes in complex samples. Together, these molecular methods are proving increasingly important for monitoring water quality.
