Effect of elevated carbon dioxide concentration on carbon assimilation under fluctuating light

Natural fluctuations in light intensity may significantly affect the amount of CO assimilated by plants and ecosystems. Little is known, however, about the interactive effect of dynamic light conditions and atmospheric CO concentrations. The hypothesis that elevated CO concentration (EC; 700 μmol CO mol) increases photosynthetic efficiency in dynamic light environments as compared to ambient CO concentration (AC; 385 μmol CO mol) was tested. Sun leaves of European beech ( L.) and current-year shoots of Norway spruce [ (L). Karst.] were exposed to five dynamic light regimes (LRs) occurring within forest canopies due to variable cloud cover or self-shading of leaves and to a steady-state LR. The LRs differed in the time course of incident irradiance, whereas the overall duration (600 s) and total amount of radiation (35.88 mmol photons m) were the same in all LRs. The EC treatment enhanced the amount of CO assimilated under all LRs tested. While the stimulation was only 37 to 50% in beech, it was 52 to 85% in spruce. The hypothesis that photosynthetic efficiency is stimulated by EC was confirmed in LRs when the leaves were pre-exposed to low light intensity and photosynthetic induction was required. By contrast, only a minor effect of EC treatment was found on the rate of induction loss and postillumination CO fixation in both species studied.

Stoichiometric flexibility as a regulator of carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems under change

Ecosystems across the biosphere are subject to rapid changes in elemental balance and climatic regimes. A major force structuring ecological responses to these perturbations lies in the stoichiometric flexibility of systems - the ability to adjust their elemental balance whilst maintaining function. The potential for stoichiometric flexibility underscores the utility of the application of a framework highlighting the constraints and consequences of elemental mass balance and energy cycling in biological systems to address global change phenomena. Improvement in the modeling of ecological responses to disturbance requires the consideration of the stoichiometric flexibility of systems within and across relevant scales. Although a multitude of global change studies over various spatial and temporal scales exist, the explicit consideration of the role played by stoichiometric flexibility in linking micro-scale to macro-scale biogeochemical processes in terrestrial ecosystems remains relatively unexplored. Focusing on terrestrial systems under change, we discuss the mechanisms by which stoichiometric flexibility might be expressed and connected from organisms to ecosystems. We suggest that the transition from the expression of stoichiometric flexibility within individuals to the community and ecosystem scales is a key mechanism regulating the extent to which environmental perturbation may alter ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling dynamics.

Roots and fungi accelerate carbon and nitrogen cycling in forests exposed to elevated CO2

A common finding in multiple CO(2) enrichment experiments in forests is the lack of soil carbon (C) accumulation owing to microbial priming of 'old' soil organic matter (SOM). However, soil C losses may also result from the accelerated turnover of 'young' microbial tissues that are rich in nitrogen (N) relative to bulk SOM. We measured root-induced changes in soil C dynamics in a pine forest exposed to elevated CO(2) and N enrichment by combining stable isotope analyses, molecular characterisations of SOM and microbial assays. We find strong evidence that the accelerated turnover of root-derived C under elevated CO(2) is sufficient in magnitude to offset increased belowground inputs. In addition, the C losses were associated with accelerated N cycling, suggesting that trees exposed to elevated CO(2) not only enhance N availability by stimulating microbial decomposition of SOM via priming but also increase the rate at which N cycles through microbial pools.

A multi-biome gap in understanding of crop and ecosystem responses to elevated CO2

A key finding from elevated [CO(2)] field experiments is that the impact of elevated [CO(2)] on plant and ecosystem function is highly dependent upon other environmental conditions, namely temperature and the availability of nutrients and soil moisture. In addition, there is significant variation in the response to elevated [CO(2)] among plant functional types, species and crop varieties. However, experimental data on plant and ecosystem responses to elevated [CO(2)] are strongly biased to economically and ecologically important systems in the temperate zone. There is a multi-biome gap in experimental data that is most severe in the tropics and subtropics, but also includes high latitudes. Physiological understanding of the environmental conditions and species found at high and low latitudes suggest they may respond differently to elevated [CO(2)] than well-studied temperate systems. Addressing this knowledge gap should be a high priority as it is vital to understanding 21st century food supply and ecosystem feedbacks on climate change.

From systems biology to photosynthesis and whole-plant physiology: a conceptual model for integrating multi-scale networks

Network analysis is now a common statistical tool for molecular biologists. Network algorithms are readily used to model gene, protein and metabolic correlations providing insight into pathways driving biological phenomenon. One output from such an analysis is a candidate gene list that can be responsible, in part, for the biological process of interest. The question remains, however, as to whether molecular network analysis can be used to inform process models at higher levels of biological organization. In our previous work, transcriptional networks derived from three plant species were constructed, interrogated for orthology and then correlated with photosynthetic inhibition at elevated temperature. One unique aspect of that study was the link from co-expression networks to net photosynthesis. In this addendum, we propose a conceptual model where traditional network analysis can be linked to whole-plant models thereby informing predictions on key processes such as photosynthesis, nutrient uptake and assimilation, and C partitioning.

Growth and photosynthetic traits of hybrid larch F1 (Larix gmelinii var. japonica x L. kaempferi) under elevated CO2 concentration with low nutrient availability

The hybrid larch F(1) (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi) is considered one of the most important tree species not only for timber production but also as an afforestation material for severe conditions such as infertile soil. To predict the ability of hybrid larch F(1) as an afforestation material under potential climates in the future, it is important to understand the response of hybrid larch F(1) to elevated CO(2) concentration ([CO(2)]) under low nutrient availability. Three-year-old seedlings of hybrid larch F(1) were grown under two different levels of [CO(2)], 360 (ambient) and 720 µmol mol(-1) (elevated), in combination with two different levels of nitrogen (N) supply (0 and 30 kg ha(-1)) for one growing season. Elevated [CO(2)] reduced the maximum rates of carboxylation and electron transport in the needles. Net photosynthetic rates at growth [CO(2)] (i.e., 360 and 720 µmol mol(-1) for ambient and elevated treatment, respectively) did not differ between the two CO(2) treatments. Reductions in N content and N use efficiency to perform photosynthetic functions owing to the deficiency of nutrients other than N, such as P and K, and/or increase in cell wall mass were considered factors of photosynthetic down-regulation under elevated [CO(2)], whereas stomatal closure little affected the photosynthetic down-regulation. Although we observed strong down-regulation of photosynthesis, the dry matter increase of hybrid larch F(1) seedlings was enhanced under elevated [CO(2)]. This is mainly attributable to the increase in the amount of needles on increasing the number of sylleptic branches. These results suggest that elevated CO(2) may increase the growth of hybrid larch F(1) even under low nutrient availability, and that this increase may be regulated by changes in both crown architecture and needle photosynthesis, which is mainly affected not by stomatal limitation but by biochemical limitation.
